This study makes an original contribution to the literature on social media usage for learning purposes through the phenomenological approach of enquiry. It examined the general motivations for social media usage; how social media is used to meet academic needs; perceived academic benefits; and how social media usage disrupts studies. A total of 24 undergraduate students were engaged in rigorous focus group discussions. Results showed that social media has been adapted to suit the academic needs of users through the process of appropriation. It was found that although social media could be a viable platform for inter-university-collaborative-learning, respondents hardly engaged in that. It was suggested that students create inter-university social media groups for collaborative learning. There were accounts of negative implications of using social media, like addiction and distractions. Students must adopt tactics to handle distractions which could prove helpful in out-of-school settings like the workplace.

The chapter examined the impact of social media on information retrieval among undergraduate students in Faculty of Management Science, University of Ilorin. It determined the social media network that undergraduate students are more exposed to for retrieving information, identifying the differences in undergraduate students' usage of social media network for information retrieval based on gender and age brackets, exploring preference for social media compared to other sources of information retrieval system available for students, exploring the types of information retrieved from social media network, and identifying the challenges faced by undergraduates in the use of social media networks. The population of the study was comprised of 3,634 students out of which a sample of 360 was chosen through stratified random technique. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect data. Five research questions were developed and answered by the study. The findings revealed that undergraduate students' exposure to social media is very high.

This exploratory study surveyed 379 undergraduate students at a southeastern university to investigate the factors that contribute to the consumer ownership of tablets, iPads, and dual adoption of both a tablet and smartphone. It also examines the factors that may predict a consumer’s likelihood to own a tablet in the future, given their current status as a non-owner. The findings consistently demonstrate the importance of perceived tablet usefulness, microblogging social media usage, and computer commerce in affecting tablet, iPad, and dual mobile device ownership.

ABSTRACT: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INTENSITY OF INSTAGRAM SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE WITH SELF ESTEEM  Self-esteem is formed by interactions with other people. At present, social interaction can not only be done in the real world but can also be done in the virtual world, through social media such as Instagram. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the intensity of Instagram social media usage and self-esteem. This research is a quantitative study with a correlational design. The sample in this study were 205 undergraduate students of Malahayati University, aged between 17 to 25 years. The data in this study were obtained using an Instagram social media intensity usage questionnaire and a self-esteem scale. The results of data analysis using Spearman's rho show that there is a significant positive relationship between intensity of Instagram social media usage and self-esteem. Keywords: Intensity of Social Media Usage, Instagram, Self Esteem Harga diri terbentuk dari interaksi dengan orang lain. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara intensitas penggunaan media sosial instagram dengan harga diri. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 205 mahasiswa S1 Universitas Malahayati, berusia antara 17 sampai 25 tahun. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh menggunakan kuesioner intensitas penggunaan media sosial instagram dan skala harga diri. Hasil analisis data menggunakan Spearman’s rho menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan positif yang signifikan antara intensitas penggunaan media sosial instagram dengan harga diri. Kata Kunci: Intensitas Penggunaan Media Sosial, Instagram, Harga Diri

Abstract Introduction A delay in endogenous biological rhythms is assumed to cause undergraduate students to be “night owls,” but neurodevelopmental effects may only partially explain chronotype (circadian preference). Instead, perceived chronotype in students may result from poor sleep hygiene practices including bedtime social media use, afternoon caffeine consumption, and daytime napping. If so, then chronotype should be malleable in students to the extent that behavioral choices change. Methods We surveyed 1,120 undergraduate students who were enrolled in STEM courses across up to 3 time points during the semester. The survey assessed perceived chronotype (morning/evening type), global sleep quality, and daily habits that impact alertness and sleep hygiene (e.g., social media usage and timing, caffeine consumption and timing, and napping behavior). Results Relative to Morning Types, students who perceived themselves as being Evening Types showed 23.1% greater bedtime social media usage (t=3.14, p=.002), 35.1% greater daytime napping duration (t=4.44, p<.001), and a 44 minute later average time of caffeine consumption (even though total caffeine consumption was reduced; t=2.30, p=.022). Evening Types also reported lower subjective health (t=3.55, p<.001), with 14.2% of the association between chronotype and subjective health being mediated by bedtime social media use (direct effect: b=0.050, p=.002; indirect effect: b=0.009, p<.05). Ninety-one students reported switching from being Evening Types at baseline to Morning Types at a later survey; those who switched to Morning Types used less social media and consumed less caffeine after 5pm and they showed significant improvements across the semester in sleep duration, sleep quality, and exam scores (ps<.05). Conclusion Perceived chronotype is related to social media and caffeine consumption behaviors and is modifiable. Students who perceive themselves as night owls may find better health and academic success if they behave like morning larks. Support National Science Foundation (DRL 1920730)

Social media use among students has infiltrated into dental education and offers benefits but may also cause problems. The aim of this study was to explore and compare current social media usage among dental undergraduate students from two countries—Malaysia and Finland. A self-administered structured online questionnaire was used. WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat were the services that were most familiar to the respondents from both countries. There were differences between the students from the two countries among the most preferred platforms. The most frequently used applications were WhatsApp (91.1% of students in Malaysia and 96.1% in Finland used it very frequently) and Instagram (74.3% of students in Malaysia and 70.0% in Finland used it very frequently). Students in Malaysia spent significantly more hours per week using the platforms as study tools than students in Finland. Over 80% of the Finnish dental students reported that lack of knowledge was not an issue in social media usage, while 85% of Malaysian students felt that lack of knowledge prevented them from using social media platforms frequently. The findings offer evidence that dental students used social media extensively.

AbstractBackgroundSocial anxiety is one of the most prevalent and disabling anxiety disorders with lifetime prevalence rates ranging from 2 to 16% s in different populations. Considering the rising use of social media among university students, it is necessary to assess their social anxiety as a result of the use of social media platforms since social anxiety can affect social interaction in social mediaMethodsThe current study employed a cross-sectional descriptive approach and was carried out among undergraduate students of University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Users (SAS-SMU) which is a data collection tool to assess levels of social anxiety experienced by university students while using social media platforms was used in the current study. Data were analyzed with IBM Statistical Products and Service Solutions (SPSS) for Windows, Version 20.0.ResultsA total of 228 out of the 380 questionnaires distributed were filled and returned (60% response rate). Social media usage was highest for WhatsApp (4.4±0.902) and Facebook (3.3±1.055). Social media anxiety was higher in females (69.00±12.59) than males (68.42±12.06) although this difference did not reach statistical significance (t = −0.356, p = 0.864). Social media usage was higher in females (35.02±5.04) than males (34.58±6.01) but the difference did not reach statistical significance (t = −0.603, p = 0.314). There was a non-significant negative association between Social media usage and social media anxiety (r = –0.051, p = 0.4450). More than half of the students (55.7%, n = 127) had social media anxiety.ConclusionIn conclusion, there was a negative non-significant correlation between social media usage and social anxiety. Investigations regarding social anxiety in social media are scarce from low and middle income countries and this is the first from an African country.

Background: The use of social media by students helps to have access to basic information as quick as possible but numerous universities and schools around the world restrict the access to social networks within its buildings to help students to concentrate on their studies. Aim: The aim of this article is to assess the impact of social media on academic performance of pharmacy students. Methodology: The present study includes gathering data from students through a survey research design to determine the effect of social media usage on their academic performance. The survey was adapted from a previous study and after that it is converted to online Google Form. Results: Most of the participants in the present study said that their academic achievement is excellent (41.67%) or very good (41.67%). The majority of the students agree that the use of social media is useful in educational institutions, social media can be used to arrange group discussions with the experts and that it can be used to fix an appointment with other subject experts. The majority of the students also agree that they can receive announcements from lecturers and faculty using social media. Conclusion: The majority of the students feel that social media affect their academic performance positively and about half of them feel that social media affect their performance negatively. It is important to increase their awareness about the importance of regulating social media usage.

The adoption of new media technologies is rapidly becoming a trend in educational environment. Given the growing popularity of social media, it has become pertinent to understand and adopt social media networks in developing future educational blue prints. This study investigates the extent to which WhatsApp platform could engender collaborative learning among undergraduate students in the University of Abuja, Gwagwalada, Nigeria. To achieve this aim, a dual research methodology was employed to drive the study. Both survey and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) were employed respectively. Surveying 400 undergraduates, data from the survey were analysed using Simple Percentage Table (SPT) and Microsoft Office tools, while data that emanated from the focus group were analysed thematically. The study incorporated ‘Technology Acceptance Model’ (TAM) to direct and guide it. Discoveries from the study found that “perceived usefulness” and “perceived ease of use” engender the use of WhatsApp among students. Also, it was discovered that students incorporated and domesticated class WhatsApp group for various purposes, particularly for learning. Overall, the study found that class WhatsApp group engenders collaborative learning to a large extent. However, it was discovered that the major challenge in class WhatsApp groups is the posting of irrelevant contents on the platforms. The study concluded that it is paramount to fully harness the potentials of WhatsApp in order to enhance learning in higher institutions.

This study aimed to assess the impacts of social media gadgets on academic performance of the students. The study was conducted in two randomly selected universities in Punjab, i.e., University of Agriculture Faisalabad and University of Sargodha. The sample size for the study was 200 (100 from each university) purposively selected undergraduate students enrolled in B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture. Data was collected through the valid, pre-tested and structured questionnaire and analyzed through SPSS. Descriptive statistics was applied for the meaningful interpretation of the results. The results of the study showed that average age of the respondents was 21.09 years. Of the total respondents, 59.8% belonged to rural areas and 40.5% belonged to urban areas. Less than half (46%) of respondents were small farmers and 13.5% had no land. Most of the respondents (76.3%) were owners of their lands. Farming was the key income source for 58% respondents. Average area under cultivation was perceived 10.61 acres. Regarding use of social media gadgets, 87.5% of respondents had an account on WhatsApp for contacts and information sharing thus WhatsApp was the widely used gadget (x̄=3.42±1.30). Pertaining to use of social media gadgets, improved students’ confidence (x̄=3.28), developing high quality multimedia products such as presentations (x̄=3.27), enhanced opportunity of discussion (x̄=3.26), enforcement and encouragement to independent learning (x̄=3.19) were the leading impacts as perceived by the respondents on their academic performance. This study affirms the overwhelmed effectiveness of social media and urged universities to develop a framework to integrate social media in educational system.
