N-Hexane, Methyl Ethyl Ketone and Chloroform Solvents for Oil Recovery from Refinery Waste

Considerable amount of oily waste is generated from petroleum refinery in Malaysia. A typical refinery produces about 40 tons of sludge per month. Disposing via land filling (common method) is becoming less accepted and more expensive. As a result, refineries and other facilities have accumulated large volumes of this waste in makeshift landfills or other storage areas. For this reason solvent extraction method has been selected for oil recovery and to minimize the solid waste. Three solvents (chloroform, MEK, and n-hexane) and two extraction methods (sludge–solvent mixing method , and Soxhlet apparatus) were applied to recover the oil from the refinery sludge. Soxhlet extraction method has shown higher efficiency in extraction than sludge-solvent mixing method. Soxhlet extraction method using MEK solvent can recover about 48.3 % of oil, as compared to mixing method which accounts to only about 32.5 % of recovered oil. It has an added recovery of about 7.1 %, 15.8 % and 5.7 % for n-hexane, MEK and chloroform solvents respectively. FTIR results confirmed that MEK has the highest capability to extract hydrocarbon from refinery waste.

The aim of this research is to know the extraction method of caterpillar pupa without detrimental to chemical composition to know the amount of pupa production of German caterpillar with two extraction methods per 100 grams of pupa To know the content of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber and amino acid lysin, methionine, and vitamin E pupa oil of German caterpillar. The study was conducted from February to April 2017, at the Lab. Central University Tribhuwana Tunggadewi. Oil extraction analysis was conducted in the chemistry laboratory of Tribhuwana Tunggadewi University and chemistry laboratory of Poltek Malang. German caterpillar research material, German caterpillar pupa, pupa caterpillar germany extracted by maceration and sokletasi. German caterpillar pupa is obtained from German caterpillar breeders in Amadanom, Dampit, Malang Regency. This research uses two different extraction methods, namely cold extraction method (maseration method) and using heat method (soxhlet method). The conclusions of both research methods are known that the quantity of German caterpillar yield using soxhlet extraction method is more than the maceration extraction method. However, for the quality of the two methods it is still necessary to do further analysis to know the exact comparison of the two methods.

This work aimed to extract perfume from the leaves of Cymbopogon citratus using three extraction methods viz: distillation, solvent extraction and expression or effleurage. About 150 g of dried lemons grass were extracted using ethanol as the solvent to obtain essential oils required for the formulation of perfumes. The result of the hydrodistillation process showed that 1.23 g of essential oil per 130g of dry lemongrass produce 0.95% oil at 78 °C, while the effleurage method was 2.55 g of essential oil per 130 g of dry lemongrass sample thereby producing 1.96% oil yield. The solvent extraction method gave 2.7 g of essential oil per 130 g of dry lemongrass sample. This gives about 2.08 % yield of essential oil at a temperature of 78°C i.e. the boiling point of ethanol. The solvent extraction method yielded 2.08%, the effleuragemethod yielded 1.96% and the hydrodistillation method yielded 0.95% essential oil respectively. In conclusion, solvent extraction gave the highest yield because of less exposure to air and heat, which is highly recommended as the most suitable method for the extraction of essential oil.

The effects of different types of solvents and extraction method were investigated to determine the presence of antioxidant contents and activity from the P. niruri plant. The aim of this study is to determine which extraction method will give higher natural antioxidant contents and antioxidant activity. The content of natural antioxidant and antioxidant activity were analysed by total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay. The results showed that extracts from a supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method without the addition of modifier showed the highest content of total phenolic (187.66 mg GAE/ g) and flavonoid (1100.93 mg QE/g) in P. niruri compared to the other methods of extraction with different type of solvents. The extract of P. niruri from different extraction methods showed antioxidant activity on DPPH radical scavenging assay. The soxhlet extraction method by methanol showed the lowest IC50 compared to the other methods of extraction. The results revealed that P. niruri extracts had different content of antioxidant and antioxidant activity. The solvent polarity and different methods of extraction play significant roles in determining the most suitable method for production of antioxidant contents and antioxidant activity from P. niruri extracts.

Introduction. Plants are a valuable source of biologically active compounds, including antioxidants, which could prevent the development of oxidative stress. The members of Rosaceae family such as Sorbus aucuparia L. and Cydonia oblonga Mill. are the examples of plants contained antioxidants. Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of leaves and fruits extracts of rowan and quince, taking into account influence of the extrahent as well as extraction method on this activity. Material and methods. The extracts were obtained by classic extraction methods – shaking and extraction in Soxhlet apparatus. Methanol, acetone as well as 70 and 96% (v/v) ethanol were used as solvents. Antioxidant activity was estimated by DPPH, FRAP, Folin-Ciocalteu (F-C) and ABTS methods. Results. The highest antioxidant activity was found in leaf extracts of both plants. In most cases, rowan extracts showed higher potential than appropriate extracts of quince. The most effective extraction method was extraction in Soxhlet apparatus using methanol (in case of rowan and quince) as well as 96% (v/v) ethanol (quince) and 70% (v/v) ethanol (rowan). The highest results were obtained with FRAP method, whereas the lowest – with DPPH. Conclusions. The presented in vitro results confirmed, that the leaves and fruits extracts of selected plants belonging to the Rosaceae family showed antioxidant activity and could be applied in various industry branches.

The aim of this study was to valorize the oil recovery from red and white grape seeds (Vitis vinifera L.) that remains as by-product after the winemaking process. Oils were extracted by modern techniques, ultrasound assisted (UAE), microwave assisted (MAE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), and compared to the Soxhlet extraction (SE). Firstly, SFE was optimized at different operating conditions: pressure (250–350 bar), temperature (40–60 °C), CO2 flow rate (0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 kg h−1), and particle size (315–800 µm and >800 µm). The highest extraction yields were achieved by SFE at the optimal conditions: 350 bar, 60 °C, 0.4 kg h−1. Afterwards, SFE was compared to SE, UAE and MAE with respect to oil extraction yields, and analyzed for fatty acid composition and antioxidant capacity. Considering the general classification of fatty acids, it was found that samples had high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, regardless of extraction technology. Tocopherol content was significantly influenced by all extraction methods, whereas UAE and MAE resulted in extracts richer with lipophilic antioxidants. In conclusion, modern extractions that are suited for industrial applications had better performance as compared to SE, as judging by the oil yield and quality.

Antioxidant activity of the flavonoids from pomelo (Citrus grandis (L.) Osbeck) peel obtained by conventional soxhlet extraction (CSE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction were investigated. For measuring antioxidant activities, different methods have been used corresponding to different levels of antioxidant action. The results indicated that the extraction yields of flavonoids by MAE and SC-CO2 extraction were higher than that by CSE method, whereas flavoniods by SC-CO2 extraction exhibited the strongest antioxidant activities. Our results indicated that SC-CO2 extraction method could effectively reserve the antioxidant ability of pomelo peel flavonoids.

The catechins composition of tea polyphenols with different extracted methods was analysed by HPLC. The aim is to compare the extraction effect of water-extracting and alcohol-extracting method, the purification effect of solvent extraction and ionic precipitation method. The results indicated that organic solvent extraction method can improve the extraction rate of catechins, especially can increase the content of estered catechins. In the technic of organic solvent extraction, the total content of catechins can effectively be increased by using alcohol extraction. Ion precipitation can enhance the content of gallocatechins,while organic solvent extraction can raise the contents of catechins,EC and estered catechins.

Olea europaea L. leaves constitute a source of bioactive compounds with recognized benefits for both human health and technological purposes. In the present work, different extracts from olive leaves were obtained by the application of two extraction methods, Soxhlet and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), and six solvents (distilled water, ethanolic and glycerol mixtures solvents). MAE was applied under 40, 60 and 80 °C for 3, 6.5 and 10 min. The effect of the extraction method, solvent and treatment factors (the latter in MAE) on the total phenol content (TPC), the antioxidant activity (AA) and the phenolic profile of the extracts were all evaluated. The extracts showed high values of TPC (up to 76.1 mg GAE/g DW) and AA (up to 78 mg TE/g DW), with oleuropein being the most predominant compound in all extracts. The Soxhlet extraction method exhibited better yields in TPC than in MAE, although both methods presented comparable AA values. The water MAE extract presented the strongest antimicrobial activity against five foodborne pathogens, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 2.5 to 60 mg/mL. MAE water extract is proposed to be exploited in the food and nutraceutical industry in the frame of a sustainable economy.

The work is devoted to a comparative analysis of the quantitative content of extractives and water-soluble polysaccharides isolated from the fruit bodies of mushrooms Grifola frondosa depending on the extraction methods. As objects of study used strain of fungi G. frondosa 2639, isolated from commercial mycelium. It was established that the yield of fungi in polypropylene bags (volume up to 4500 cm3) was 36.37%, differing little from the yield of fruit bodies in glass containers (volume 800–1000 cm3). Using the hydrolysis of extraction products it was found that the methods of extracting the fruit bodies of G. frondosa with water lead to the extraction of polysaccharides of different composition. It was established that when using extraction methods in the Soxhlet apparatus, boiling and maceration (25.0±1.0 °C), the yield of extractive substances from the fruit bodies of G. frondosa was within the literature data interval and amounted to 6.04, 5.81 and 3.45%, respectively. It was shown that the highest content of water-soluble polysaccharides in the fruit bodies of G. frondosa was found using the extraction method in the Soxhlet apparatus – 14.92 %, differing from boiling and maceration methods (25.0±1.0 °C) in 1.15 and 1.33 times. By HPLC it was found that when maceration extraction was used (25.0±1.0 °C) and boiling, the monomeric composition of the polysaccharides of the fruit bodies of G. frondosa is mainly glucose, mannose, fucose and rhamnose in a ratio of 1.0 : 0.9 : 0.4 : 1.3, respectively. During extraction in the Soxhlet apparatus, their ratio was 1.0 : 1.2 : 0.5 : 1.9.

SummaryA new, quick and efficient solvent extraction method of separating various constituents from irradiated fuel samples has been evolved. In this method, the following groups are isolated, using diethyl hexyl phosphoric acid, (HDEHP) as solvent (1) Ru, Cs, Sr, Ba. (2) Ce. (3) Y plus rare earths. (4) Zr and Nb. Further solvent extraction methods are used for separation of individual elements.A rapid method is described for the extraction and estimation of zirconium-95 from fission product solution utilizing HDEHP. The fission products are normally in nitric or hydrochloric acid solution but extractions from sulphuric acid solutions are also described. The method usually takes half an hour and an accuracy of ± 1% is obtained.
