Nitrogen doped TiO2/sepiolite composite materials (N-TiO2/sep) with different nitrogen contents were prepared by a sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. XRD and SEM results showed that anatase-TiO2nanoparticles were distributed homogenously on the surface of sepiolite. XPS revealed that N atoms could incorporate into the lattice of anatase TiO2substituting the oxygen atoms sites of oxygen atoms.

Four kinds of TiO2/CNT (or carbon fiber) composites were successfully prepared by the sol-gel method using Ti(OBu)4 as precursor of TiO2, and untreated CNT, carboxylic CNT, hydroxylated CNT and carbon fiber were used as carriers, respectively. After heat treatment at 400 and 800°C, TiO2/CNT nanocomposites and purified TiO2 were obtained. Their structure and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicate that different carbon nanotubes and nanofiber have notable influences on the morphology and structure of TiO2 nanocrystals.

Abstract We prepared a series of ZnO and ZnO/PVA catalysts by sol-gel method. The wurtzite ZnO phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Forming spherical shaped ZnO and ZnO/PVA nanoparticles was proved by Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Decomposition of Methylene Blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) by synthesized pure ZnO and ZnO/PVA nanoparticles were studied in the UV–Vis region. ZnO/5PVA was the most active in decomposition of MB, while ZnO/7PVA was the most active in decomposition of MO. By studying biological activity of pure ZnO and ZnO/PVA in diabetic rats shows that ZnO/5PVA was the most active in lowering glucose level by different percentages.

With the development of the science and technology, environmental pollution becomes one of the most serious problems all over the world. TiO2 has gained intense research in the past decades due to its applications in environmental purification and solar energy conversion. In this paper, we discuss the influence of nonmetal (N, P, S) doped TiO2 were prepared by hydrothermal method, the samples are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activity of them was evaluated for the degradation of methylene blue under xenon lamp which has similar spectra to solar light. The results domenstrated that the N, P-codoped TiO2 powders exhibited a better photocatalytic activity, and the optimum molar ratio is also investigated.

Photothermal materials are attracting more and more attention. In this research, we synthesized a ferrocene-containing polymer with magnetism and photothermal properties. The resulting polymer was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Its photo-thermocatalytic activity was investigated by choosing methylene blue (MB) as a model compound. The degradation percent of MB under an irradiated 808 nm laser reaches 99.5% within 15 min, and the degradation rate is 0.5517 min−1, which is 145 times more than that of room temperature degradation. Under irradiation with simulated sunlight, the degradation rate is 0.0092 min−1, which is approximately 2.5 times more than that of room temperature degradation. The present study may open up a feasible route to degrade organic pollutants.

Intense photoluminescence (PL) has been observed at room temperature from the polycrystalline SiC samples prepared from carbon-saturated Si melt at a temperature ranging from 1500 to 1650°C. Composition and structure of the samples have been confirmed by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. PL measurements with 325 nm UV light excitation revealed that the room temperature PL spectrum of the samples consists of 3 luminescent bands, the peak energies of which are 2.38 eV, 2.77 eV and 3.06 eV, respectively. The 2.38 eV band is much stronger than the others. It is suggested that some extrinsic PL mechanisms associated with defect or interface states would be responsible to the intensive PL observed at room temperature.

SrSn(OH)6 precursors synthesized by a cyclic microwave radiation (CMR) process were calcined at 900°C for 3 h to form rod-like SrSnO3. Further, the rod-like SrSnO3 and AgNO3 in ethylene glycol (EG) were ultrasonically vibrated to form rod-like Ag/SrSnO3 composites, characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron microscopy (EM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and UV-visible analysis. The photocatalyses of rod-like SrSnO3, 1 wt%, 5 wt%, and 10 wt% Ag/SrSnO3 composites were studied for degradation of methylene blue (MB, C16H18N3SCl) dye under ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In this research, the 5 wt% Ag/SrSnO3 composites showed the highest activity, enhanced by the electron-hole separation process. The photoactivity became lower by the excessive Ag nanoparticles due to the negative effect caused by reduction in the absorption of UV radiation.

Mn, Fe doped ZnO powders (Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O2, x≤0.05) were synthesized by an ameliorated sol-gel method, using Zn(CH3COO)2, Mn(CH3COO)2and FeCl2as the raw materials, with the addition of vitamin C as a kind of chemical reducer. The resulting powder was subsequently compacted under pressure of 10 MPa at the temperature of 873K in vacuum. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O2powder and bulk samples have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to study chemical valence of manganese, iron and zinc in the samples. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O (x≤0.05) samples were single phase with the ZnO-like wurtzite structure. No secondary phase was found in the XRD spectrum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that Fe and Mn existed in Zn0.95-xMnxFe0.05O2samples in Fe2+and Mn2+states. The results of VSM experiment proved the room temperature ferromagnetic properties (RTFP) of Mn, Fe co-doped ZnO samples.
