Study on the Reinforcement of ZDMA in EPDM

We researched the reinforcement effect of commercial Zinc methacrylate (ZDMA) on ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), ZDMA was added to EPDM directly with hakke internal mixer. The mechanical properties, SEM, RPA and FTIR were synthetically used to study the reinforcement effect, compared with the reinforcement of CB N330. The results showed that the reinforcement effect of ZDMA on EPDM was better than that of CB N330. The tensile strength of vulcanizate with ZDMA was up to 17MPa, and the elongation at break was 493%. It could possess great resilience under the condition of high hardness. After adding ZDMA, the processing fluidity and crosslink density of EPDM were improved.

In this article, we report three nanofillers filled polymer composite systems. Nanofillers composed of alumina, titania and organoclay were embedded separately in 50% polypropylene (PP) and 50% ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) blends. The nanocomposites were prepared using an internal mixer and were molded using a compression mold to form test samples. Effect of filler loading (2, 4, 6, and 8 vol.%) on the tensile properties and melt flow index (MFI) were determined. The mechanical properties of alumina are the highest compared to titania and organoclay. Alumina and organoclay shows an ascending trend in tensile strength with the increase of nanofiller loading. In contrast, the increment of titania filler loading reduces the tensile strength of the nanocomposites. The Young's modulus of the nanocomposites increases with the addition of filler loading. Elongation at break of the nanocomposites shows a descending trend with the addition of filler loading. The addition of 8 vol. % titania and organoclay slightly changes the MFI of the PP/EPDM nanocomposites whereas the addition of 8 vol. % alumina drastically decreased the MFI values. Further addition of nanofillers up to 8 vol. % decreases the MFI values of the PP/EPDM nanocomposites.

This study was carried out to discuss the influence of curing temperature on the performance of conductive composites filled with nickel-coated graphite (NCG). The electrical conductivity, crosslink density, mechanical properties and tensile fracture morphology have been investigated. The results indicated that curing temperature had great impact on the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties. Voluem resistivity decreased from 43.1 to 0.08 ohm-cm at 125°C-205°C, and the reason was discussed in light of formation and break of the conductive network in the composites. The stability of SR-NCG cured at 165°C-205°C were also better than those cured at other curing temperature. Besides, tensile strength increased from 2.41 to 7.19Mpa at 125°C-225°C, elongation at break have a 56% increase, and Shore A hardness also incresed from 74 to 82.

In this paper, the influence of paraffinic oil on the physical mechanical and thermal properties of three EPDM rubbers types Buna EP T.6465, Keltan 5260Q and Keltan 6160 D have been investigated. The results showed that the tensile strength and the elongation at break of Keltan 5260Q and Keltan 6160 D with 10 phr paraffinic oil represent the improvement of 57.8% to 57.6% and 71% to 81% respectively, compared to EPDM rubbers without paraffinic oil. The mean peel force of EPDM keltan 6260D with 10 phr paraffinic oil loaded is about 36% and 32.5% higher than that of keltan 5260Q and EP.T 6465 respectively. Beside that at the suitable paraffinic oil contents, the thermal resistance of Keltan 5260 Q and 6160D seems to be a little higher than that of without processing oil and these EPDM rubbers are suitable for application to high thermal resistance rubber products.

Composites based on polyethylene grafted acrylic acid (PE-g-AAc)/ethylene-co-vinylacetate copolymer (EVA)/calcium carbonate (CaCO3) were prepared by melt mixing. Relative melt viscosity, morphology, mechanical properties and thermostability of the composites were studied. The experimental results show that the presence of (CaCO3) activated by stearic acid (10-20 wt.%) changes lightly stable torque of polymer blend of PE-g-AAc/EVA. Use of modified PE improves compatibility of PE and EVA as well as makes the components disperse into each other better than in blends using unmodified PE. Tensile strength and elongation at break of both polymer blends decrease with presence of CaCO3. However, tensile strength of the composites of PE-g-AAc/EVA/CaCO3 is higher than that of composites of PE/EVA/CaCO3. Beside that, the composites of PE-g-AAc/EVA/CaCO3 have thermostability higher than the composites of PE/EVA/CaCO3.

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and polypropylene (PP) were prepared in an internal mixer at 180°C. The effects of curing systems (i.e., sulfur and peroxide) on morphological, rheological, thermal and mechanical properties were studied. It is found that the sulfur cured TPVs show higher tensile strength, tear strength and elongation at break than those cured with the DCP systems. The rheological analysis indicates that TPVs cured with DCP system show lower apparent shear viscosity than those with sulfur system. SEM studies show that TPVs vulcanized with DCP system exhibit smaller and finely dispersed rubber domains, which provides it higher thermal stability than sulfur cured TPVs.

Abstract This paper describes the results of an extensive study involving the continuous ultrasonic devulcanization of unfilled EPDM rubber. Die pressure and ultrasound power consumption were measured as a function of processing conditions. The mechanical properties of aged and fresh revulcanized EPDM rubber were measured. Gel fraction, crosslink density, and dynamic properties were also determined for the virgin vulcanizate, the ultrasonically devulcanized rubber, and the revulcanized rubber. Additionally, the cure behavior of virgin and devulcanized EPDM rubber was investigated. The tensile strength of revulcanized EPDM rubber was found to be much higher than that of the virgin vulcanizate with the elongation at break being practically intact. A mechanism explaining the increase in mechanical properties of revulcanized rubbers was proposed.

Abstract The correlation between the mechanical properties of revulcanized SBR, total and polysulfidic crosslink density, gel fraction of original vulcanizate, ultrasonically devulcanized, and revulcanized rubber is described. Under some processing conditions the tensile strength of revulcanized SBR is found to be much higher than that of the original vulcanizate with elongation at break being practically intact. A model explaining the increase in mechanical properties of revulcanized rubber is proposed.

Abstract In this study, recycled ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM-r) were blended with polypropylene (PP) by compounding via heated two roll mills with the various ratio of EPDM-r. Certain blends were included with PP-g-MA as a compatibilizer. In tensile tests, the increasing of EPDM-r content in blends resulted in the reduction of tensile strength and Young’s Modulus but increased elongation at break. Furthermore, the presence of compatibilizer in blends enhanced the tensile properties. It was found all the samples with compatibilizer performs better results in tensile strength, Young’s Modulus, and elongation at break than samples without compatibilizer. On the other hand, the aging affected were studied on compatibilized and uncompatibilized blends. It was found that aging affects the samples by decreasing the tensile strength, Young’s Modulus, and elongation at break. The crosslink density had been found higher in the blends with high EPDM-r content as the EPDM-r had the ability to swell. The morphological study related to the structure with the tensile properties. It was confirmed that the presence of a compatibilizer increased the compatibility between EPDM-r and PP matrix.

The blend of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) and natural rubber (NR) is immiscible and incompatible which lead to poor mechanical properties. Many methods can be carried out to improve the compatibility. In this work, the potential of various reactive compatibilizers in SAN and NR blend was explored. The morphological and mechanical properties were compared. The melt blending of SAN and NR were prepared in an internal mixer with various types of reactive agent such as styrene-co-maleic anhydride (SMA), maleic anhydride (MA), peroxide and mixed reactive agents. The morphological textures of the blends were investigated by scanning electron microscope. Mechanical properties including tensile strength, impact strength and elongation at break were measured. The results of morphological observations revealed that SAN/NR blend with reactive agent, the mixture of SMA and MA show the smallest and the most uniform dispersed NR particles, where the size of NR particle is about 1 µm. The mechanical properties of the blends revealed impact strength and elongation at break were increased with addition of reactive agents. SAN/NR blend with the mixture of SMA and MA showed the highest elongation at break but it had lower impact strength than the blend with SMA.

In this study, rice husk fiber (RHF) was used as a reinforcing filler for natural rubber (NR). NR composites were prepared at various RHF contents, i.e., 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 phr. Sulfur conventional vulcanization was used. Effect of RHF content on cure characteristics, mechanical properties and morphological properties of NR composites were investigated. The results showed that scorch and cure times of RHF/NR composites were not affected by increasing RHF content. Crosslink density, tensile strength, elongation at break and tear strength of NR composites slightly decreased with increasing RHF content whereas M100 and M300 of the composites slightly increased with increasing RHF content.
