CAE Correlation of Sealing Pressure of a Press-in-Place Gasket

2021 ◽

The Press-in-Place (PIP) gasket is a static face seal with self-retaining feature, which is used for the mating surfaces of engine components to maintain the reliability of the closed system under various operating conditions. Its design allows it to provide enough contact pressure to seal the internal fluid as well as prevent mechanical failures. Insufficient sealing pressure will lead to fluid leakage, consequently resulting in engine failures. A test fixture was designed to simulate the clamp load and internal pressure condition on a gasket bolted joint. A Sensor pad using TEKSCAN equipment was used to capture the overall and local pressure distribution of the PIP gasket under various engine loading conditions. Then, the Sensor pad test results were compared with simulated CAE results from computer models. Through the comparisons, it is found that the gasket sealing pressure of test data and CAE data show good correlation for bolt load condition 500N when compared to internal pressure side load condition of 0.138 MPa & 0.276 MPa. Moreover, the gasket cross-sectional pressure distribution obtained by experimental tests and CAE models correlated very well with R2 ranging from 90 to 99% for all load cases. Both CAE and Sensor pad test results shows increase in sealing pressure when internal side pressure is applied to the gasket seal.

A simulation model and the results of experimental tests of a vibration generator in applications for the hot-dip galvanizing process are presented. The parameters of the work of the asynchronous motor forcing the system vibrations were determined, as well as the degree of unbalance enabling the vibrations of galvanized elements weighing up to 500 kg to be forced. Simulation and experimental tests of the designed and then constructed vibration generator were carried out at different intensities of the unbalanced rotating mass of the motor. Based on the obtained test results, the generator operating conditions were determined at which the highest values of the amplitude of vibrations transmitted through the suspension system to the galvanized elements were obtained.

The article discusses the possibility of using blended biofuels from rapeseed oil (RO) as fuel for a diesel engine. RO blended diesel fuel (DF) and emulsified multicomponent biofuels have been investigated. Fuel physicochemical properties have been analyzed. Experimental tests of a diesel engine D-245 in the operating conditions of the external characteristic curve and the 13-mode test cycle have been conducted to investigate the effect of these fuels on engine performances. CFD simulations of the nozzle inner flow were performed for DF and ethanol-emulsified RO. The possibility of a significant improvement in brake thermal efficiency of the engine has been noted. The efficiency of using blended biofuels from RO as a motor fuel for diesel engines has been evaluated based on the experimental test results. It was shown that in comparison with the presence of RO in emulsified multicomponent biofuel, the presence of water has a more significant effect on NOx emission reduction. The content of RO and the content of water in the investigated emulsified fuels have a comparable influence on exhaust smoke reduction. Nozzle inner flow simulations show that the emulsification of RO changes its flow behaviors and cavitation regime.

With the major aim of gathering information on the machine lateral stability in high pressure-high density conditions, and of assessing the prediction capabilities of the in-house design tools and overall process, a back-to-back centrifugal compressor has been instrumented and tested in several operating conditions. The present paper focuses on the secondary flows across the interphase balance drum of the back-to-back compressor, where the sealing is accomplished with a honeycomb seal. The compressor interphase section has been instrumented with dedicated special probes for the clearance measurement associated to pressure and flow angle probes in order to characterize pressure distributions and swirl variations depending on the specific operating range. The experimental data acquired over the machine operation have been compared with a three-dimensional steady-state numerical analysis results obtained from the simulation, carried out with a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach, of the flowfield in the complex interphase secondary system composed by the impeller cavities and the honeycomb seal. This paper addresses the comparison between numerical results and experimental data, which allowed the matching of models with experiments in terms of pressure distribution and the complex flowfield. Finally, all the data have been used to validate an in-house one-dimensional flow network solver for pressure distribution and leakage flow calculations along cavities and seals. Results have shown a general good agreement between measured data and calculation output. In particular, computational fluid dynamic analysis provided detailed pressure and velocity distributions that allowed gaining insight in the physics of such a complex region. The one-dimensional model has been demonstrated to be a fast and reliable tool to well predict local pressure variations inside cavities and seals and, consequently, the residual axial thrust.

The effects of surface forces (SF) and coated layers (CL) on pure squeeze elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) motion of circular contacts are explored under constant load condition by using the finite difference method (FDM) and the Gauss–Seidel iteration method. The transient pressure profiles, surface force, film shapes, and elastic deformation during the pure squeeze process under various operating conditions in the TFEHL regime are discussed. The simulation results reveal that the difference between SFEHL model and EHL model is apparent as the film thickness is thinner than 5 nm. The oscillation phenomena in pressure and film thickness come mainly from the action of solvation forces. At contact region, the greater elastic modulus and smaller coating thicknesses, the greater pressure distribution, and the smaller film thickness. The film thicknesses are found reverse at outside the contact zone. At the exit region, i.e. the minimum film thickness region, it is valid that the greater the elastic modulus and the smaller the coating thicknesses, the greater the solvation pressure distribution. The effects of surface forces become significant as the film thickness becomes thinner.

This paper illustrates a methodology that, by means of laboratory and on-track tests, allows for an appropriate design of the connection elements between the suspended equipment and the carbody in order to enhance the rail ride comfort. In particular at first the connection elements are tested in laboratory to assess their visco-elastic behaviour simulating the common operating conditions. Subsequently on-track tests and experimental modal analysis are carried out to identify the interaction between underframe equipment motions and carbody modes. In the experimental tests, starting from the laboratory test results, it is possible to define the connection elements in order to minimise the negative influence on vehicle ride comfort. Two different solutions are proposed: the “TMD solution” (the suspension is tuned on the natural frequency of the carbody mode most relevant from the comfort point of view) and the “suspended solution” (the suspension system aims to decouple the two subsystems).

Gasketed flange connections should be designed taking actual behavior of the connections under their operating conditions into consideration. However, such actual behavior as bolt load change, gasket load change and flange rotation were not clear because adequate calculation method was not developed due to difficulty and complicacy to solve statically indetermine problem among three bodies, bolt, flange and gasket. In this paper, authors develop a method to calculate load factor for gasketed flange connection. Load factor describes bolt load change when an external force is applied to the connection. Load factor represents flange rigidity including gasket stiffness that dominates not only the behavior of joint after pressurising but also its sealing performance. By using the load factor, bolt load change as well as gasket load change due to internal pressure can be obtained by simple equations. When the required gasket stress is given to achieve a prescribed sealing thightness, the required initial bolt preload can also be calculated. Authors also proposed a load equilibrium diagram for gasketed flange connection with internal pressure. The diagram helps us to understand schematically how bolt load and gasket load change under pressurized condition. In addition, experimental tests are performed using 3 inch and 20 inch flange connections with spiral wound gasket in order to demonstrate validity of the proposed calculation method based on load factor and load equilibrium diagram. In conclusion, it is found that the proposed calculation method can estimate bolt load change and gasket load change under pressurized condition.

Partographs are guidelines for childbirth observations that will facilitate labor assistants in first identifying emergency cases and complications for mothers and fetuses. Preliminary survey at the Sigi Community Health Sub-Center (Pustu) of the 8 Pustu midwives found two midwives (25%) to complete a complete partograph, six midwives (75%) incomplete. The purpose of this study was to determine the determinant factors associated with the use of partographs in labor. The design of this study used observational analytic methods with a cross-sectional approach. 24 BPM survey results were obtained with 30 samples of midwives who met the research criteria and data completeness. The sampling technique was by the total population. Data analysis used logistic regression. The multivariate analysis results showed that APN training was the most influential factor in the use of partographs in labor by midwives. Statistical test results obtained a POR value of 37.7 (95% CI 12.1 - 60.2). This study suggests that midwives must have APN certificates to be valid in providing services.

The article compares the results of calculation of the finite element simulation of current and temperature distribution in the scale model of the DC catenary with the data of laboratory tests. Researches were carried on various versions of the structural design of catenary model, reflecting the topological features of the wire connection, characteristic of the DC contact network. The proportions of the cross-sectional area of the scaled model wires are comparable to each other with the corresponding values for real DC catenary. The article deals with the operating conditions of the catenary model in the modes of transit and current collection. When studying the operation of the scale catenary model in the transit mode, the effect of the structural elements on the current distribution and heating of the wires was obtained. Within the framework of the scale model, theoretical assumptions about the current overload of the supporting cable near the middle anchoring have been confirmed. In the current collection mode, the experimental dependences of the current in the transverse wires of the scale model are obtained from the coordinate of the current collection point. Using the model it was experimentally confirmed that in the section of the contact wire with local wear, not only the temperature rise occurs but also the current redistribution due to the smaller cross section. Thus, the current share in other longitudinal wires of the scale model increases and their temperature rises. Scale and mathematical models are constructed with allowance for laboratory clamps and supporting elements that participate in the removal of heat from the investigated wires. Obtained study results of the scale model allow to draw a conclusion about the adequacy of the mathematical model and its correspondence to the real physical process. These conclusions indicate the possibility of applying mathematical model for calculating real catenary, taking into account the uneven contact wear wire and the armature of the contact network.
