Piper guineense commonly called Usira in Edo, Uziza in Igbo and IgherelIyere in Yoruba belongs to the family piperaceae. The efficiency of its seed powder in the control of callosobruschus maculatus (beans weevil) was investigated in the Science Laboratory Department of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State Nigeria. The seed powder was applied at the rate of O control, 15, 25, 50 and 100 (gkg-1). The result obtained shows that piper guineense seed powder at 25gkg-1 to 100gkg-1 were effective in the control of callosobrusus maculatus at 0.01% level of significance. It was revealed that a very strong insecticidal action of I. piper guineense on beans weevil. However, the efficiency of this insecticidal action on callosobruschus maculatus with increasing concentration of the plant material seed powder with 100gkg-1 giving the highest mortality rate, residual action and egg plugs of the weevils. This finding is critical to resource poor farmers in developing countries who will find this trial practicable and affordable. colourkasi hustlers.

The problem of drug resistance to orthodox antimicrobial agents has remained a setback in the treatment of bacterial infections in the modern society. Adverse effects, coupled with scarcity and high cost of orthodox drugs have necessitated interest in the search, development and use of antibacterial agents from plant origin. Piper guineense is claimed in traditional medicine as a remedy for gram negative organism-transmitted infections. The leaves of Piper guineense plant was collected, washed, dried at room temperature and pulverized. The plant material was extracted with 80% ethanol. The ethanol-extracted residue was subjected to fractionation. Seventeen fractions were obtained, and were pooled together based on their Rf values into five pooled-fractions labeled: PF-1, PF-2, PF-3, PF-4, PF-5. Both the ethanol and fraction extracts were subjected to phytochemical analysis, preliminary antibacterial screening, minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations determination using both clinical isolates and type culture organisms. The yield of ethanol-extracted residue was low (21.08g) when compared to the amount of pulverized plant material (500g). Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids and terpenoids in all the extracts. The extracts produced statistically significant lower zone of inhibition (p<0.05) when compared with the standard drug (amoxicillin), it also demonstrated activity against test organisms used in the study. The findings of this study demonstrated that ethanol leaf extract of Piper guineense possess antibacterial activities, therefore justifies the traditional claim of the plant.

In Bulgaria, the patient is entitled to palliative care in case of incurable disease with an unfavourable prognosis. Palliative care is provided by the family doctor/GP and institutions. Literature on palliative care providing is scarce. The objective of the study was to investigate the opinion of general practitioners, medical students, and other medical specialists working in institutions on palliative care. Method. We have developed a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics have been calculated for all items. Differences between groups have been compared using u-criterion. Level of significance was P<0.05. Data has been analyzed using SPSS v. 16. Results. A total of 518 respondents completed the survey. Lack of appropriate organisation and financing has been pointed out by all participants. The GP’s role in palliative care providing has been described as a contradictory one. The criteria on the basis of which the patients are eligible for palliative care have been arranged in the same way by all respondents, but GPs chose the longest temporal indicator. Quality assessment has not been applied. 2/3 of respondents demanded palliative care training. Conclusion. On the whole, the investigated groups differed to some extent in their opinion on palliative care both on conceptual and practical levels.

Insecticides resistance can significantly compromise the control programs of Rhyzopertha dominica (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), one of the main wheat pests in warehouses. The objectives of this work were to study the occurrence of resistance to fenitrothion and esfenvalerate in two Brazilian populations of R. dominica from Santa Rosa (SR lineage) and Campo Grande (CG lineage), as well as the insecticidal effect and residual action of these insecticides when used alone or as a mixture in stored wheat. The application system was calibrated to provide grain treatment at theoretical concentrations of 10 and/or 0.5 mg kg-1 fenitrothion and esfenvalerate, respectively. By comparing the fitted mortality curves for lineages within insecticides, as well as insecticides within lineages significant differences were observed in all cases. Esfenvalerate was ineffective in controlling R. dominica. The SR lineage of R. dominica was more resistant to the insecticides tested than the CG lineage. The number of individuals in the F1 offspring of R. dominica was dependent on the lineage, insecticide, and on the time after the application of insecticide. In the untreated grains (control), the CG lineage had a greater number of progeny than the SR lineage, while the opposite was verified in the grains treated. Fenitrothion and esfenvalerate are not useful for the control of R. dominica. Factors influencing control of R. dominica are discussed in this work.

Ecuador has a great variety of climatic regions that potentiate biodiversity. The family Orchidaceae constitutes one of the most important of the country, having identified about 4032 species with a high degree of endemism, therefore the development and research of alternative methods of storage and conservation of species is a strategy of primary interest for researchers and for society in general. In cryopreservation, temperatures reach below -190°C in order to paralyze the chemical reactions and keep the plant material viable for long periods. The present research focuses on the development of protocols for cryopreservation of seeds, aimed at the preservation of biodiversity, focusing on the family Orchidaceae, for the subsequent generation of a seed bank. The assays were performed on seeds of Epidendrum quitensium, Sobralia rosea, and Epidendrum anderssonii. Two freezing rates were tested: rapid freezing at -196°C; and step freezing at -22°C, -60°C to 196°C, further analyzed four combinations from Dimethylsulfoxide DMSO, glycerol and sucrose (DMSO 1M; DMSO 1M + glycerol 1M; DMSO 1M + sucrose 1M; DMSO 1M + glycerol 0,5M + sucrose 0,5M). The best results were obtained both in rapid and stepped freezing without the use of cryo-protective substances, by introducing the seeds directly into liquid nitrogen. Species of the genus Epidendrum presented a more efficient response in comparison to Sobralia. The viability of the seeds was evaluated by the tetrazolium test.

The use of herbs for improvement of oral hygiene is increasing in many communities in Nigeria despite the usage of other dental care products. On the basis of this the present study was conducted to assess indigenous plants used to manage dental condition and mouth odour and to evaluate nutritional, phytochemicals and antinutrient content of the plants. A survey was conducted to document plants used for treatment of toothache and mouth odour in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area. Using random sampling technique, a total of one hundred structured questionnaire was administered to Traditional Health Practitioners in three major markets of the study area. Nutritional, phytochemical and anti-nutrient contents of most used plants were evaluated. Data were analyzed using Statistical Analysis System. Means were separated using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at 5% level of significance (p < 0.05). A total of twenty-three (23) plants belonging to sixteen families were enumerated out of which Capsicum frutescens, Piper guineense fruits and Zanthoxylum zanthoxloides roots were the most exploited for management of the conditions. Crude fibre (8.86 %), fat (1.12%) and ash contents (4.73%) were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in Z. zanthoxloides roots while moisture (25.75 %) was significantly higher (p <0.05) in C. frutescens fruits. Calcium (192.10 mg/100g), phosphorus (108.50 mg/100g), sodium (51.33 mg/100g), iron (4.85 mg/100g), Zinc (3.94 mg/100g), manganese (1.15 mg/100g) and copper (2.12 mg/100g) were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in Z. zanthoxloides roots compared C. frutescens and P. guineense fruits. Vitamin A (600.00 µ/100g), vitamin B (0.07.00 mg/100g), vitamin C (94.54 mg/100g) and vitamin E (720.00) were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in C. frutescens than Z. zanthoxloides and P. guineense. Results also showed that tannin (6.40 %), oxalate (30.00%), phytate (0.40%) and trypsin inhibitor (20.00 %) were significantly higher in frutescens than Z. zanthoxloides roots. Similar significant (p<0.05) increase were observed in the quantity of flavonoid (3.25%), saponnis (1.30%), phenol (0.60%) and anthocyaninns (0.23%) in Z. zanthoxloides compared with C. frutescens and P. guineense.

Abstract Background : Adolescence is a fluctuating period wherein they love to do things as they wish and something that gives them a thrill without reasoning and hence they need to be guided. Objective : Determine the knowledge and find the effectiveness of an awareness program on substance abuse and its consequences among the PU College students.Find the association between the pretest knowledge scores and the selected variables like age, gender, monthly income of parents, and education of parents, birth order and history of substance abuse in the family. Method : A Pre-test post-test design was used. Fifty three students from Udupi district was selected by convenient sampling. The tool used was knowledge questionnaire on substance abuse and its consequences. Demographic proforma was used to collect the background information. SPSS software version 16 was used for data analysis. Results : Pretest knowledge shows that 91% of the students had average knowledge and about 2% of the students had poor knowledge whereas only 7% had good knowledge. The post-test result shows that 28(52.8%) students had good knowledge on substance abuse and its consequences. The indices show a steady increase in knowledge from 7.5 % during the pre-test to 52.8% during the posttest with a mean difference of 4.23 between pre-test and post-test at 0.05 level of significance(p>0.001) Conclusion : Awareness programme helps students to gain knowledge and helps in enlightening their future.

In healthy societies, physical education and sport activities carry important roles in raising individuals. Previous scientific researches point out that physical activity is very important in the development process of the children. Therefore, children need to be supported in joining planned and systematic physical education and sport activities in both family and school life, beginning at very young ages. Every possibility should be offered to the children for performing sport activities healthily in the habitat while also taking precautions.The purpose of the study is to identify the expectations of the middle-school students and the problems they encounter when attending sport activities in their family and school lives. The data was collected through a survey developed by the researchers. A descriptive method with the aim of revealing the current situation was used in the study. The population of this study consisted of 2500 students, studying in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades of the middle-school. Two middle schools from the schools within the Sakarya province were selected through a random selection method. The survey was applied to a total amount of 400 volunteer students that were selected as the sample group and studied in these schools. The SPSS 15.0 for Windows software was used for the data analysis. Frequency analysis was used in order to determine the quantity and percentage distributions of the demographic information of the participants. On the other hand, chi-square analysis was used for the comparison of the problems and expectations related to family and school life in regards to the demographic variables. The level of significance in the chi-square analysis was specified as p<0,05.As a result of the study, in relation to the family and school life, the male students were found to have more problems and expectations regarding the participation in physical education and sport activities, when compared to female students. In addition to this, the students who participated in physical education and sport activities regularly seemed to have bigger expectations and more problems with their families.The problems and expectations of participating students regarding the family and school life were identified and suggestions for possible solutions were presented. The study is hoped to be beneficial for the field.

In conditions of a sharp reduction in the stocks of traditional fuels, it is important to find new efficient and renewable carbon-neutral energy sources. One of the most promising sources of renewable energy is the biomass of woody plants, in particular the family Willow (Salicaceae Mirb.). Traditionally, Salicaceae plants are propagated by generative and vegetative methods. Microclonal propagation, in contrast to traditional methods of reproduction, allows to obtain genetically homogeneous healthy planting material throughout the year. A significant number of biotechnological publications focus on the development of the optimal protocol for the reproduction of plants of the family Salicaceae, the study of the morphogenetic potential of tissues and optimizing their growth. However, the authors note the individually determined regenerative ability of plant material in vitro, which depends on a number of factors. The purpose of the study is to analyze the results of biotechnological research on the effectiveness (possibility) of obtaining high-quality planting material of plants of the family Salicaceae by tissue in vitro. For this purpose, we used the results of biotechnological studies of plant tissues of the family Salicaceae in vitro by foreign and domestic authors published in professional journals during 2010−2020. Research methods − analysis, comparison, synthesis, generalization. The analysis revealed that the sterilization regime of Salicaceae plant material depends on the type of explant, phenological phase and age of the donor plant. Step-by-step sterilization using mercury chloride, sodium hypochlorite and silver nitrate effectively neutralizes the exogenous biota of woody explants. The stage of active vegetation is the optimal period of isolation of explants. To obtain virus-free regenerating plants, it is advisable to use apical meristems, callus tissue − leaf blades, active regeneration − microshoots. Stable regeneration system, its type, multiplication factor of Salicaceae plants are genetically determined. For the introduction of plants in vitro, active proliferation, rooting, microclonal propagation, it is advisable to use nutrient media according to WPM (McCown & Lloyd, 1981) and MS (Murashige & Skoog, 1962). For regeneration of plants by direct morphogenesis and activation of growth of existing meristems of an explant to apply the environment with cytokinins (BAP (6-benzylaminopurine), kinetin or 2-isopentenyladenine (2-ip), for rooting − with auxins NAA (α-naphthylacetic), IBA (3-indolylbutyric acid) and IAA (β-indolyl-3-acetic acid). Further research is aimed at optimizing the propagation protocols of Salicaceae plants in vitro.

Abstract Objectives: to describe the evolution of rates of Hospitalizations for Conditions Susceptible to Primary Care (HCSPCs) in children and adolescents in Minas Gerais, testing the correlation with population coverage of the Family Health Strategy (FHS). Methods: an ecological study analyzing the evolution over time and correlation with rates of coverage of the FHS between 1999 and 2007. Analyses were carried out for three age groups: 0 - 4 years, 5 - 9 years and 10 - 19 years. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used with a level of significance of 5%. Results: the rates of HCSPAs were found to decline during the period studied. In the population aged 0 - 4 years, a decrease of 19.1% was observed. For the 5 - 9 and 10 - 19 year age groups, the rates fell by 0.6% and 18.5% respectively. There was no significant correlation between the decline in rates and increased FHS coverage. The main causes of hospitalization for all age groups were infectious gastroenteritis, bacterial pneumonia and asthma. Conclusions: despite the decrease observed, the lack of correlation between coverage and rates of HCSPA draws attention to the need for improvement in access to and better professional qualification for child and adolescent healthcare.
