AbstractFace masks are currently considered essential devices that people must wear today and in the near future, until the COVID-19 pandemic will be completely defeated through specific medicines and vaccines. Such devices are generally made of thermoplastic polymers, as polypropylene and polyethylene and are single use products. Even if in this period the sanitary emergency must have the maximum priority, the world society should not completely forget the environmental problem that are causing more and more obvious climate changes with correlated damages to ecosystems and human health. Despite the well-known correlation among anti-COVID protective equipment (or more generally medical devices) and environmental issues, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and eco-design-based studies in this field is very scarce. The present study aims to derive the most important environmental criticalities of such products, by using LCA and product circularity indicators of five different common masks. The final aim is to provide eco-design guidelines, useful to design new face masks by preventing negative impact on the environment.

In this study, the natural dye was extracted from Spartium junceum L. (SJL) flowers and applied on cellulose (cotton) and protein (wool) fabric. Fabrics were pre-mordant with alum prior to the dyeing process. Considering the global requirements on zero waste and green policy, the dyeing process was intended to be as much as possible environmentally friendly but still effective. Therefore, mordant concentration was optimized due to the reduction of the negative impact. The efficiency of the dyeing process was investigated by examination of fabrics’ color characteristics and colorfastness to washing properties. In this paper, we have proved that the extracted dye from Spartium junceum L. is an acidic dye (mordant dye) which is more applicable for the treatment of wool fabrics. In this paper, it was proved that phytochemicals responsible for coloring are part of the flavonoids group. The UV absorption spectra of extracted dye show 4 bands in the region of λmax 224, 268, 308 and 346 nm which are ascribed to bands characteristic for flavonoids. Wool fabric pre-mordant with 3% alum and dyed shows great chromatic (C*) properties where C* value is in a range from 47.76 for unwashed samples to 47.50 for samples after 5 washing cycles and color hue (h°) is in a range 82.13 for unwashed samples to 81.52 for samples after 5 washing cycles. The best result regarding the colorfastness properties is shown by the wool sample treated with 3% alum after 5 washing cycles (total difference in color (Delta E*) = 0.87). These results confirm that metal (Al) from alum mordant make strong chemical bonds with wool substrate and dye since Delta E* values decrease in comparison to Delta E* values of the cotton samples treated the same way. The results revealed it is possible to reduce the concentration of mordant up to 3% and obtain satisfactory results regarding the colorfastness. Nevertheless, future research will go in the direction of replacing synthetic mordant with a more environmentally friendly one.

Heavy metals such as lead, chromium, cadmium, copper, mercury, and arsenic which are industrial by-products can have negative impact on the environment if they not managed properly. Biosorption is environmentally-friendly waste treatment method. The advantage of biosorption compared to other waste treatment method is ecotechnology, which means effective, cheaper than chemical treatment and environmentally-friendly technology. Using the concept of bioremediation-based on microbial enhanced recovery of metals (MERM) allows the possibility of concentration process (bio-concentration) of metal content through the process of biosorption in microbial cells. The process of bio-concentration potentially to be applied on a commercial scale to increase the recovery of high-value commercial metals. This study aims to absorb Cu2 + and Hg2 + metals using Omphalina sp. cultured on empty fruit bunches (EFB) in rotary biological contactor (RBC) systems. The principle of this technique is waste containing metals was contacted with white rot fungi (WRF) Omphalina sp. which is attached to the surface of the media inside a reactor and then the final waste concentration was analyzed. This analysis was using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) device to measure the concentration of Cu2+ and Hg2+ metal ions and Freundlich isothermic equations for calculating maximum absorption power (q max). The highest absorption of Cu2+ ion is 0.3304 mg/g and Hg2+ is 0.074 mg/g for 6 hours. The adsorption capacity of Omphalina sp. for Cu2 + and Hg2 + solutions based on the Freundlich adsorption equation with maximum adsorption power for Cu2 + is 71.911 mg/g and Hg2+ is 20.216 mg/g. Biosorbent Omphalina sp. can be reused in biosorption process with percentage decrease of Cu2+ is4.30% (4.3 ppm) and Hg2 + is 27.80% (1.39 ppm) for 18 hours.[Key words : biosorption technique, empty fruit bunches, immobilization, rotary biological contactor , white rot fungi-Omphalina sp.] AbstrakLogam berat seperti timbal, krom, cadmium, tembaga, merkuri, dan arsen yang merupakan hasil samping industri dapat berdampak negatif terhadap lingkungan jika tidak dikelola dengan baik. Melalui konsep bioremediasi berbasis microbial enhanced recovery of metals (MERM) memungkinkan terjadinya proses pemekatan (bio-konsentrasi) kandungan logam melalui proses biosorpsi dalam sel mikroba.
