Case study of a small company founded in 1987 by «amateur" entrepreneurs who entrusted their management to operational executives used to «command done» without considering the importance of a plan and without basic technical information. The objective is to apply operational research to a production process of a company seeking to establish a level of input-process-product combination that maximizes the company's income or profit and /or minimizes its operating costs. Simple and easily interpreted mathematical models are used. The case claims the importance of guiding the production manager towards basic analytical information that allows him to identify the current state of the company and its resources in order to make technically feasible and economically profitable decisions. It shows that the application of the operational investigation does not imply the modification of the installed capacity of the company; on the contrary, their solutions correct the greater or lesser use of that capacity, bringing the input-output relationship closer to the maximum usable, which implies greater profits.

The upcoming trends related to climate change are increasing the level of interest of social groups in solutions for the implementation and the realization of activities that will ensure the change of these trends and can reduce the impact on the environment, including the health of the community exposed to these impacts. The implementation of solutions aimed at improving the quality of the environment requires taking into account not only the environmental aspects but also the economic aspect. Taking into account the analysis of solutions changing the current state of climate change, the article focuses on the analysis of the potential economic effect caused by the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBSs) in terms of reducing the operating costs related to water retention for local social groups. The analysis is based on a case study, one of the research projects studying nature-based solutions, created as part of the Grow Green project (H2020) in Wrocław in 2017–2022. The results of the analysis are an observed potential positive change in economic effects, i.e., approximately 85.90% of the operating costs related to water retention have been reduced for local social groups by NBSs.

The paper analyzes the current state of the Chinese cruise market and presents the idea of building a business model of coastal cruising. The cruise demand of middle-income families, which includes the desired travel days, ports of call, is surveyed. The data of the previous non-cruise travels and the data of future cruises of middle-income families are used to develop a model designed to identify the maximum passenger volume with minimum operating costs while taking cruise itineraries and schedules into account. A matrix coding genetic algorithm was designed to solve the model. The case study found that a voyage of 4.79 days results in equilibrium, that the annual demand is 200,840 passengers, and that the daily voyage cost is 0.843 million Yuan.

Information systems provide an attractive opportunity for dishonest employees in sensitive job positions to develop and implement a fraudulent scheme. Many different types of technical information systems controls help prevent these situations from occurring and can also detect occurrences after they have happened. However, in some cases, employees are able to circumvent critical segregation of duties. In addition, management of a company may override traditional internal controls in order to achieve business objectives. Overriding internal controls can produce an environment that is conducive to fraud.Internal auditors with an information systems specialty can often identify red flags prior to fraudulent acts taking place in the organization. This allows an organization to utilize preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of a fraud occurring. In a specific situation where an information system fraud is suspected, internal auditors are often charged with leading the investigation. This case analyzes an employee fraud involving a breakdown of internal information technology and management controls, falsification of business records, and a lack of segregation of duties. This case is designed for use in either an undergraduate auditing, information systems security, accounting ethics, internal auditing, computer ethics or other related class. Its primary purpose is to introduce students to a very common type of employee fraud and to illustrate how professional guidance can be applied in such a situation. While the case is based on a true situation, all identities have been modified to protect each individuals right to privacy.
