The British Council has elaborated certain materials aimed at developing the writing skills, especially report writing, of the students who have already reached upper-intermediate level of English competence. The article presents the process of the use of the abovementioned materials among Armenian junior diplomats and other people working in other fields. It further analyzes the methods that will help overcome linguistic difficulties that might arise while writing a report.

Public diplomacy of Great Britain is one of the most developed in the EU and in the world. The United Kingdom has developed an extremely efficient public diplomacy mechanism which includes BBC World Service (which due to its popularity boosts the reputation and the image of Great Britain), Chevening Scholarships (provides outstanding foreign students with opportunity to study in Great Britain and thus establishes long-lasting relations with public opinion leaders and foreign countries elite) and the British Council, which deals with international diplomatic ties in the field of culture. The British Council is a unique organization. Being technically independent, it actively and efficiently works on consolidating Great Britain’s interests in the world and contributes to the development of public diplomacy in Great Britain.   The author studies the efforts of the British Council as a unique public diplomacy tool of the United Kingdom. Special attention is paid to the role of British Council, which is independent of the governing board and at the same time finds itself under the influence of the latter due to the peculiarities of the appointment of Board’s officials, financing etc. The author concludes that the British Council is a unique organization established in 1934, which is a non-departmental state body, charitable organization and public corporation, technically independent of the government. The British Council, thanks to its commercial activities covers the lack of public funding caused by the policy of economy conducted by the government. It has good practices in this field worth paying attention by other countries. It is also worth mentioning that the increment in profit was getting higher last year, however the issue of increasing the influence of the government on the activities of British Council is still disputable. Although the Foreign Minister officially reports to the parliament on the activities of the British Council, approves the appointment of the leaders of organizations, the British Council preserves its independence of the government, which makes it more popular abroad, and makes positive influence on the world image of Great Britain. The efficiency of the British Council efforts on fulfillment of targets of the United Kingdom public diplomacy is unquestionable, no matter how it calls its activities: whether it is a cultural relations establishment or a cultural diplomacy implementation. It is obvious that English has become a popular language in many countries in the world. As a means of communication, English guarantees better mutual understanding and has become indispensable for most of people around the world. Thus, it is necessary to find out an appropriate and effective methods of giving feedback to help university students improve their English writing skills. The result of this study indicates that using indirect coded feedback in error correction help students make noticeable progress. The students’ positive attitude towards teacher’s feedback (indirect coded feedback) means that they enjoyed using error codes to find and correct their errors. Moreover, their confidence was boosted because error codes motivated them.

This study aimed to improve the experimental report writing skills through the discovery learning method of the fifth graders of  Muhammadiyah Sapen Elementary School Yogyakarta. This study was classroom action research. The subjects were 26 students of the fifth grade. The techniques for collecting data were observation, task, and documentation. The instruments of the data collection were observation sheets and writing performance. The result of this study showed that the process approach with the discovery learning method could improve the experimental report writing skills of the fifth-grade students of Muhammadiyah Sapen Elementary School Yogyakarta. It could be seen from the result of students’ observation sheet and writing performance. The observation result indicated the increase of the process and result of experimental report writing skills with the average score of 74.88 in Cycle I to 89.38 in Cycle II. The percentage of the Minimum Criteria for Mastery Learning in Cycle I was 60% and increased to 96% in Cycle II, with 24 the students achieved the mastery level and one failed. This showed that the students’ classical mastery was achieved.

Irina Odoevtseva’s emigration began in 1922, permanently deleting the poet from Russian literature. In emigration, she stopped writing poems and turned to prose. Mainly, her memoir work brought her fame. The memoirs “Na beregakh Seny” are dedicated to the memories writers and poets of the Russian emigration, but a special place among them is occupied by I. A. Bunin. It was his criticism that Odoevtseva considered the most valuable and it was from him that she received approval as a prose writer. Thanks in large part to his comments and observations, she improved her writing skills. Moreover, the author-memoirist managed to get the location of Bunin. He repeatedly noted Odoevtseva’s ability to listen to him with genuine attention and interest. This impressed the writer and made him want to share his thoughts. Irina Odoevtseva’s femininity, diplomacy and sincerity allowed her to maintain good relations with Bunin throughout her life. So, the most significant event of emigration for Odoevtseva becomes acquaintance with Bunin. The memoirist does not tell about each meeting in chronological order: it captures the most striking key moments. The poet admired the extraordinary and rare talent of the writer. Behind the mask of arrogance and arrogance, Odoevtseva was able to discern the best human qualities in him. She saw her task as bringing her contemporaries and descendants at least a little closer to Bunin’s greatness. According to the memoirist, he was such a multiaceted personality that no one could give an exhaustive description of his image. Being a poet and prose writer, she learned Bunin mainly as an author-Creator. But the main thing in Irina Odoevtseva’s observations is that this image extended to Bunin’s life as a whole. This was expressed in the way he saw the world, how he spoke and reminisced about his childhood and youth. Even the most mundane story told by Bunin became a small work of art. The writer did not just tell, but showed what he was talking about. He, like no one else, felt and understood nature subtly and sensitively, and his presence always created a special atmosphere. This, according to Odoevtseva, made him an extraordinary and unique person, and that is why it was so important for her to get to know the real Ivan Bunin and capture his multi-faceted image.

<p>Information and Communication Technology is now becoming an essential part of everyday life of most people in the world. This paper analysed the main functionalities and tools available in the Moodle platform and their use through lecturer’s perspectives at English Department of IAIN Palangka Raya. This  study belongs to descriptive qualitative research. In the present study, teachers are expected to implement the Moodle platform of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) in EFL classes, and make the Moodle platform of ICT becoming a complement to conventional teaching in EFL classrooms, especially when developing listening, reading and writing skills in English.<strong> </strong>The results showed that the Moodle platform contains some of the main tools of the standard Moodle platform like assignments, chats, forums, news and quiz/survey. The most the students purposes of the use of the Moodle platform were ‘download materials’, ‘news’ and ‘deliver assignments’, and the most used information materials are ‘texts’ and ‘slides’.</p>

The article addresses the current trends of teaching subjects through the medium of English which has been boosting in the world and in Ukraine. Introduced due to globalization processes, teaching in English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) has become an essential part of internationalization policies of universities. The increase in numbers of international students is viewed as an indication of quality of education provided by universities; it contributes to universities’ higher ratings and competitiveness. The introduction of EMI has been sustainably promoted by the British Council. Nonetheless, EMI providers across the world keep encountering similar issues and challenges. Amongst those, the most essential is low English language proficiency of non-native English speakers – both teachers and students. The article aims to examine the training provided to Ukrainian teachers who deliver EMI courses. The authors surveyed 28 EMI teachers in two universities in the country. The results imply the necessity to reprofile linguistic and pedagogical courses for EMI teachers, including training them in implementing innovative and interactive teaching techniques. The prospects of further research arouse from the need to develop a quality system of assessing students’ learning outcomes.

The major purpose of the study was to measure the effects of the formative assessment in the improvement of English writing skills at intermediate level. This study used a quantitative research method, descriptive in nature, so the researcher used the survey method for data collection. The study was delimited to Sahiwal division of Punjab province. The population of the study comprised of all 246 male and female colleges and higher secondary schools of Sahiwal division which are affiliated with BISE Sahiwal. Sample of this study consists of intermediate part II (328) students. A 30 items questionnaire was developed, administered and managed. Data analysis was performed by using descriptive statistics. The result shows that formative assessment assists in English writing skills, and the students face difficulties in improving English writing skills. Special lectures and trainings may be managed for English writing skills and give a specific focus on writing skills during formative assessment.

The study investigates the effectiveness of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in Public sector colleges of Pakistan. The experimental study traces improvement in comprehension and writing skills of intermediate level students (studying in grades 11 and 12). An experiment group and a control group are used to study the effects of CLT on learners’ progress. A pre-test and post-test are carried out to measure any improvement in the students’ cognitive learning process. The experiment group is given treatment through vigorous intervention of CLT based activities. The control group is taught through the traditional method of GTM. The data collected from the two groups are analyzed using SPSS. The results show a significant improvement in the learning process, comprehension and writing skills of the students in the experiment group. The analysis proves the appropriateness of CLT for Pakistani ESL context.
