Abstract: This article analyzes the historical constitution of the sports subfield of parkour under the theoretical perspective of Pierre Bourdieu. This article outlines the chief challenges concerning the philosophical theories of emancipation and clarifies the solutions provided by a so-called negative theory of justice. Besides highlighting the classic questions that every philosophical theory of emancipation is expected to answer, the article aims to highlight the link between this theoretical framework and an immanent critique of conditions of domination. Moreover, it sheds light on the main differences between this theoretical perspective and Honneth’s theory of recognition, Fraser’s three-dimensional conception of justice, and the critique of power relations recently advanced by Rainer Forst. The comparative analysis of these theoretical approaches will make it possible to highlight and appreciate the main merits of a so-called negative theory of justice that combines a multidimensional diagnosis of existing asymmetries of power with an immanent critique of their justifications.

Having proposed a 10-point summary of her book Des valeurs. Une approche sociologique ( Values: A Sociological Approach), Nathalie Heinich responds to the comments of Laurence Kaufmann and Philippe Gonzalez, Danilo Martuccelli, and Louis Quéré, as well as to Hervé Glevarec’s review published in the same issue of Questions de communication. Nine themes are successively addressed: issues of vocabulary, the relevance or irrelevance of certain problems (nature, religion), the issue of emotions, the ontological status of valuation, the epistemological status of an ‘axiological grammar’ and its explanatory or comprehensive purpose, the historicity and contextuality of values, the place of the sociology of power relations, the issue of behaviour and empirical observability, and, finally, the controversy about ‘axiological neutrality’.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explain the issues and variables that influence the bureaucracy’s role and work in the transitional period, which is known with its complexity, uncertainty, instability, ambiguity and asymmetry. This paper highlights the transition from theoretical perspective, giving examples from the Polish experience in transition. Design/methodology/approach This paper describes the changing roles of public bureaucracies in transitional periods by highlighting their ecology with the transitional period and analyzing the determinants of bureaucracy’s role and functions in terms of participation in policy-making policies, providing consultations to executives and elected officials, working as a mediator in communication and acting as an active participant in the development process giving examples from Poland. Finally, it highlights the way the bureaucracy manages its functions and the internal and external variables that constitute various levels affecting this role in the transition. Findings Bureaucracy is supposed to function naturally and stably in an unstable environment (transition) as its success in doing these functions and helping the new regime to exceed the transition and achieve its goals depends on many variables (bureaucracy capabilities and skills, history, power, experience, the nature of politics and bureaucratic functions, political support, policy environment, knowledge, cohesion, etc.). Most of these variables were demonstrative in the case of Poland. Originality/value This paper will be useful for scholars and policymakers interested in public administration role in the time of transition, especially countries that recently have been experiencing the transition.

This paper presents an investigation of the linguistic choices employed in harassment complaints submitted to the Punjab Commission on the Status of Women and four police stations located in Lahore during 2017-2018. In a patriarchal society such as Pakistan’s, where a woman’s honour epitomizes the whole family’s honour (Atakav 2015, 52; Sharlach 2008, 96), sexual harassment, a stigmatizing issue is hardly ever reported (Ali and Kramar 2015, 241). This paper, using Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis’s (Lazar, 2005, 2007) theoretical perspective of asymmetrical gendered power relations mirrored in harassment complaints, explores the form and severity of harassing practices which had prompted women in Lahore to report them. In order to unwrap the complex interplay of gender and power, linguistic features of the complaints are examined through Fairclough’s text analysis (1989, 1992), the first dimension of the 3D model which explores lexical choices such as adjectives, adverbs, culturally informed metaphors and metaphorical extensions, which are embedded in grammatical structure exemplified through transitivity analysis. In this paper, harassment complaints are analysed as important documents invested with socio-cultural gender ideologies that underline the need for dismantling gender oppression to achieve social transformation.

ANNA LEANDER

AbstractOn 30 September 2011, the US citizen Anwar al-Awlaki was killed in Yemen in what has become the most controversial incident of US ‘targeted killing’, or, as its critics would prefer, of the US practice of ‘extrajudicial executions’. This controversy over wording expresses a profound disagreement over the legal status of the US drone program. Target killing suggests that the drone program may be legally regulated. Extrajudicial execution suggests that it falls outside the realm of legality. This article does not seek to settle which terminology is the most appropriate. Instead it analyses the legal expertise struggling to do so and its implications. More specifically, it focuses on the processes through which drones constitute the legal expertise that constitutes the drone program as one of targeted killings and of extrajudicial executions; that is, on a process of co-constitution. Drawing theoretical inspiration from and combining new materialist approaches (especially as articulated by Bruno Latour) with the sociological approach of Pierre Bourdieu, the article shows that drones have ‘agency’ in the ‘field’ of legal expertise pertaining to the drone program. Drones are redrawing the boundaries of legal expertise both by making associations to new forms of expertise and by generating technological expert roles. They are also renegotiating what is valuable to expertise. Drones are making both transparency and secrecy core to expertise. However, and contrary to what is often claimed, this agency does not inescapably lead to the normalization of targeted killings. The article therefore concludes that acknowledging the agency of drones is important for understanding how legal expertise is formed but especially for underscoring the continued potential for controversy and politics.

A participatory and sustainable village development process should actively involve women so that their essential interests can be realized in gender responsive village planning and budgeting and gender budgeting. Consciously, women and girls in supporting village development are quite high. However, qualitatively, village women are less capable and brave enough to convey ideas and criticism in village deliberation forums. The power relations and women's access to village resources are still limited due to the strong authoritarian-faced village oligarchy regime. The presence of authoritarian power relations is also perpetuated by the culture and low levels of education and the experiences of village women. Thus strengthening the capacity of individuals or groups to improve education and skills in various fields is a necessity.

Abstract. Until now, the development process in most Third World countries including Indonesia still places women as second-class citizens; while leaving a latent environmental crisis problem. This paper examines the influence of development practices through the face of mining corporations, and examines the experiences of the struggles of the people who are in the circle of power relations. The global ecofeminism approach of Vandana Shiva and Maria Mies is used as a linguistic nomenclature that helps explain each of the key words in concepts that have previously been tendered by the patriarchal power system. In the end, the value of ecofeminism as the ethics of life becomes a solutive choice to restore traditional and relational awareness that transcends the binary barriers of the human genitals, and transcends the boundaries of human egoism towards non-humans.

This text introduces article “Setting the Record Straighter” (1951) by Brazilian photographer and artist José Oiticica Filho (1906–1964). The core of Oiticica Filho's article is a discussion of the significance of photo-club exhibitions, based on the example of an ongoing rivalry between the members of São Paulo-based photo club Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante (FCCB) and Rio de Janeiro-based club Sociedade Fluminense de Fotografia. Oiticica Filho, as a member of the São Paulo-based club who resided in Rio, emerged as a mediator between the two groups—an impartial scientist who sought a solution in data, not in the clashes between egos. The article, partially translated here for the first time, illuminates the inner workings of photo-club culture, the motivation for photographers to participate, and their major concerns about the club exhibitions. Oiticica Filho's method, based on statistics and data analysis, anticipate the sociological approach to photography developed by Pierre Bourdieu in Photography: A Middle-Brow Art (1965). Understanding Oiticica Filho's statistical work is key to establishing a broader perspective on postwar photo-club culture as an international phenomenon that contributed to the recognition of photography as an autonomous art form during the 1950s.

The article deals with the problems of modern Azerbaijani culture, its philosophical component and significance in understanding the development process. At the same time, this approach to the analysis of culture not only contributes to the clarification of the methodological aspects, the definition of the desired concept, but also allows us to understand the reasons for variability, comprehending the experience of interaction between different cultures. The specific approaches to these issues of the philosophers of Azerbaijan and some other countries are an example that allows one to identify some important methodological (cultural and historical) generalizations in the formation of Azerbaijani culture. It also reveals the process of changes in culture, its enrichment and the ability to respond to the challenges of the new. The author explains the cultural dependence of community on how the historical identity of this community and power relations change. Philosophy allows us to identify the reasons for change, dynamics in what is now perceived as a holistic culture. It is productive, as it turns out to be the key to understanding the processes of gradual development of cultures, knowledge and information about others. There are many philosophical studies about culture, but philosophy not only studies culture as a historical object, it is itself a part of it, and therefore it has the ability to influence it, being a set of educational attitudes on tolerance and morality. The author draws attention to the fact that today the importance of connections between Azerbaijani culture and ethics, education and upbringing is often underestimated.
