ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate women's oral hygiene knowledge, practice, and use of dental services during pregnancy in the north of Jordan. Materials and methods Voluntary sample of 154 pregnant women of 18 to 40 years old were invited to participate in the study. They were asked to read a self-designated questionnaire and a cover letter which explained the purpose of the study. The questionnaire addressed self-reported demographics, knowledge, practice and use of dental services during pregnancy. Data were statistically analyzed using Chi-square test to determine statistically significant differences across knowledge, practice and use of dental services during pregnancy. Results The sample included 29.3% aged 20 to 24 years old; 33.1% having bachelor degree; and 66.9% were housewives. The majority of study sample 68.2% knew they need dental consultation during pregnancy; however, 39.5% received dental consultation during pregnancy. Majority 62.4% brushed their teeth regularly; however, 73.2% does not use auxiliary dental hygiene devices. Majority 44.5% visited dentist, when they feel pain. Statistically significant association were found between educational level and knowledge about need to dental consultation during pregnancy (p = 0.012); educational level and knowledge about link between pregnancy and periodontal diseases (p = 0.01); and economic status and use of auxiliary dental hygiene devices during pregnancy (p = 0.040). Conclusion Pregnant women brushed their teeth regularly and visited dentist occasionally. Income was significantly associated with increase use of auxiliary dental hygiene devices. Educational level was significantly associated with mothers’ knowledge about the need for consultation and possible link between pregnancy and periodontal diseases. Antecendent Affecting Utilization of Dental Services in Pregnant Women (Pilot Study at Serpong District, South Tangerang). Pregnancy and oral health are an aspect that is related to each other. Pregnant women need to regularly check oral health to a dentist every trimester. The number of utilization of dental service which is indicated by pregnant women’s dental visit data in Indonesia is still very low. Antecendent factors in ABC behavior change theory (Antecendent Behavior Consequences) are very important to influence the formation of a behavior including pregnant women dental’s visit. The objective of this study is to identify and evaluate the antecendent factors affecting the utilization of dental services during pregnancy. The preliminary research was conducted at comunity health center in Serpong district, South Tangerang with a cross sectional study. Subjects are 27 pregnant women with gestational age of 4-38 weeks.Data were collected through interview and clinical examination to find out about the score of DMFT index and modified gingival index, which was then analyzed descriptively and statistically using chi-Square test. Results: most of the respondents (96%; 26 respondents) did not visit the dentist during pregnancy. Antecendent factor of pregnant women’s dental visit: not knowing the benefits of dental visit during pregnancy (33%; 9 respondents), having fear of a dentist (26%; 7 respondents), visiting a dentist is thought to be expensive (19%; 5 respondents), having no need (11%; 3 respondents), having fear of causing harm to the fetus (11%; 3 respondents). The mean of DMFT is 2.78 ± 3.23 and the mean of modified gingival index (MGI) 1.00 ± 1.07. There were no significant differences in DMFT and MGI scores of each antecendent (p> 0.05). Conclusion: two major factors predicting the utilization of dental services during pregnancy are 1) knowledge and 2) perceived need.

Abstract Background: Dental care utilization for low income pregnant women is met with challenges in the traditional dentist-centered model of care. County-level measures provide insights for policy and roles for stakeholders that extend beyond the dentist-patient relationship. We examined county-level data to generate hypotheses about factors that influence utilization of dental services in North Carolina’s Medicaid for Pregnant Women (MPW) program. Methods: County-level Medicaid utilization data for dental services for 2014-2016 were pooled to get mean county estimates of dental utilization in the MPW program. Descriptive statistics and multivariate regression models of dental utilization and county-level measures are presented. Data used were collected by NC Child and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s County Health Rankings Reports. USDA Economic Research Service data were used to categorize counties in terms of Farming, Recreation, Persistent Poverty, and metro/non-metro status using Rural Urban Continuum Codes. Results: Dental utilization ranged from 1% to 26% with a median of 8.5% across the 100 counties of North Carolina. Strong patterns linking utilization of dental services in the MPW program to contextual social measures of well-being emerged, specifically, increased reporting of child abuse and neglect, elevated infant mortality, poor quality of life, and worse ranking in years of potential life lost. Counties with persistent poverty had lower rates of dental utilization. Conclusions: Utilization of dental services in the MPW program is generally low. Patterns identify the potential for enhancing community-clinical linkages to improve birth outcomes and care coordination for pregnant women to enhance dental utilization in this population.

Patterns identify the potential for enhancing community-clinical linkages to improve birth outcomes and care coordination for pregnant women to enhance dental utilization in this population.Dental coverage in the Medicaid program in most states is administered separately from medical coverage. The separation of the funding mechanisms adds a further layer of complexity to care integration. Efforts to enhance dental care for pregnant women in the Medicaid program may benefit from policy that aligns incentives for care coordination within the community. Policy that extends the window of eligibility for dental benefits to 24 months after the birth of the child will help women complete the dental treatment that is needed. This also leverages the value of care coordination for community stakeholders from diverse child health sectors.
