This article discusses and analyses the restoration and reorganization of traditional Vietnamese village institutions in Lý Sơn Island, Quảng Ngãi Province since Đổi mới (Reform, 1986). After understanding this topic, we conducted qualitative research on ethnographic field surveys during the intermittent period from March 2008 to August 2019. Our survey results show that the villagers’ self-government organization in Lý Sơn has been cultivated from the beginning of the establishment of the Vietnamese to today, forming a “village – hamlet – neighborhood (sub-hamlet)” hierarchy (làng – thôn – lân). Despite the severe effects of destruction and war, the system is stable and is playing an increasingly important role in maintaining the religious practices of the community. We use Eric Hobsbawm’s concept of “invented tradition” to explain the changes in rural systems, especially the interaction and mediation between tradition preservation and reconstruction to meet the needs of the community and adapt to the specific social environment of each period.

After an earthquake occurs, field surveys are conducted by relevant authorities to assess the damage suffered by buildings. The field survey is essential as it ensures the safety of residents and provides the necessary information to local authorities for post-disaster recovery. In Japan, a primary (mandatory) exterior survey is conducted first, and a secondary (voluntary) interior survey is performed subsequently if the residents request a reinvestigation. However, a major challenge associated with field surveys is the substantial time cost of determining the damage grades. Moreover, an interior survey is performed only after receiving the reinvestigation request from occupants, which further delays the decision-making process. In addition, the risk of incorrect damage estimation during the exterior survey must be considered because underestimating the damage can endanger the residents. Therefore, in this study, a three-part analysis (Parts I–III), where each part corresponds to a distinct stage of the standard damage assessment procedure, was performed to characterize the relationship between the building parameters and damage grades at different stages. To further explore the possibility of accelerating decision-making, predictive modeling was performed in each part. The Part I results indicate that estimating the final damage grade for all buildings immediately after the exterior survey is similar to treating the exterior survey results as the final ones. The Part II results show that buildings that potentially require an interior survey can be predicted with reasonable accuracy after the exterior survey. In buildings for which reinvestigations have been requested, Part III demonstrates that the risk of underestimation in the exterior survey can be predicted reliably.

The implementation of a cost control system in construction companies contributes to reducing resource losses in the production process and increasing business productivity and profitability, especially when it comes to small business, which normally do not have a planning system and efficient control. Therefore, this article aims to propose a target costing model for a small construction business, concerning the efficient evaluation of its costs for the maximization of profits in proposals to provide services to public entities. A case study is used, in which data collection occurred through a questionnaire, observations of the process of preparing financial proposals, other unstructured questions, and documentary search, whose approach includes descriptive and qualitative research. The survey results revealed that the enterprise has a cost control system, but is technologically backward. Besides, the enterprise already intuitively used the concepts of target cost in preparing budgets. After evaluating the costs, a target costing model was suggested for the enterprise to use as a parameter in the bidding processes, however, it was not implemented due to the current unfavorable conditions.

Os resultados da pesquisa apontam para alguns desafios, em especial, por se tratar de um curso novo e pouco conhecido, mas por outro lado, evidenciam por meio dos relatos dos alunos entrevistados, que o currículo e a metodologia do curso de Ciências do Trabalho, permitiram, entre outras importantes questões, desenvolver uma maior compreensão teórica a respeito da realidade.ABSTRACTThis article aims to present the research carried out on the experience of a new undergraduate program, the Bachelor of Work Sciences, offered by a newly created institution of higher education, the DIEESE School of Work Sciences, which features in its pedagogical proposal, to produce knowledge from what is known and from the experience of the student worker. Starting from studies that treat on the relationship between education and work in Brazil, which highlight the logic of the capitalist production method of denying many workers access to theoretical knowledge and its connection with practical knowledge. This research aims to analyze the extent to which the proposed Work Sciences course can submit a counter-hegemonic pedagogy. To this end, the eminently qualitative research, case study on this course, was performed using documentary research, through the analysis of the institutional school reports and documents of DIEESE and its maintaining entity, and interviews with 20 graduates from the first group, who completed the Work Sciences course in the year of 2015. The survey results point to some challenges, in particular because it is a new course and little known, but on the other hand, show, through the reports of the students interviewed, that the curriculum and methodology of the Work Sciences course allowed, among other important issues, to develop a greater theoretical understanding of the reality.
