Critical infrastructures often lack resilience and easily lose critical functionalities if hit by adverse events. Continuity management strategies for critical infrastructure operators and the networks that they form, rely also on the functionality of other interrelated networks. Disruptions in operations may affect society and for this reason, securing the operations of critical infrastructure operators is important. The technological impacts of CPS become evident to the resilience of all fields of critical infrastructure, but there is also human elements to take into account. The research question of this study is: How to enhance business continuity of critical infrastructure? This case study research uses qualitative methods collected by conducting interviews of resilience and continuity professionals who work with Finnish critical infrastructure. Resilience and continuity management are key for critical infrastructure operators. Important factors identified were identifying risks, critical activities, key personnel, creating guidelines and procedures, and open communication, which themes were recognised as important to improve resilience and manage continuity.

This chapter introduces the theory and model of governance as a means of implementing knowledge management strategies in large organizations. It draws on case study research into the governance of knowledge management strategy implementation in a major scientific research and development facility. It suggests that the implementation of strategy through such a framework operates to ensure the delivery of anticipated benefits in an authorized and regulated manner. Furthermore, the authors hope that an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of internal governance processes will not only inform researchers of a better design for studying knowledge management systems, but will also assist in the understanding of risks and the role of evaluation and review in the implementation of those strategies.

Few communication challenges are as difficult for healthcare providers as talking with patients about adverse events, especially when the adverse event was due to a medical error. Ethicists and professional organizations have long endorsed open communication with patients about adverse events and errors in their care. Over the past decade, however, there has been a substantial increase in attention being paid to transparent communication with patients. Many countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada have undertaken major disclosure initiatives. The Joint Commission, the body responsible for the accreditation of most US healthcare facilities, requires that patients be informed of all outcomes in their care, including ‘unanticipated outcomes’. In this chapter, we will explore the special aspects of disclosure in the oncology context, among many other important aspects. The chapter concludes by considering a disclosure case study, and discussing next steps for disclosure in oncology.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the risks associated with private sector participation (PSP) in power generation (PG) projects, how they were allocated and the strategies used to mitigate their likely adverse effects. Design/methodology/approach The paper adopts case study research method and cross-case analyses to unearth the key risks and the contractual instruments used to manage them. Findings The paper identified 30 risk factors associated with four major private sector PG projects in Ghana. The allocation and mitigation strategies of these risks are also reported. Originality/value This is the first study to create a risk register of PSP PG projects. Private investors and government have been provided with a comprehensive list of risks associated with PG infrastructure. Would-be investors have also been armed with some potential risk management strategies for proper project structuring.

Indisputably, networking offers many benefits in business. However, at the same time, it may also restrict the freedom of its actors. The aim of the paper is to complement the knowledge on the benefits and delimitations of networking by a two-step process. Firstly, the actors’ aims for independency and associability in their business relations are examined and based on these aims, different tendencies for networking are found. Furthermore, the paper discusses the resource portfolios of actors, and searches linkages between the actors’ resources and their networking tendencies. The research question of the paper is: “How the resource portfolio of an actor correlates with its tendency to form networks?” Case study research is used as the research strategy. A group of Finnish biomass heating enterprises is studied as the case, and four groups with different networking tendencies are recognized and further assessed. The results provide evidence that the actors tend to form different networks which differ from each other by the power relations and the openness of sharing social capital. In addition, it is noted that the actors differ in their resource portfolios. That creates dissimilar motives for cooperation and networking which are well-reflected with the four networking types found in the study. Resilience is the ability of an object to retain its basic functions in the case of adverse events from an external or internal environment. Adverse events can jeopardize the operation of an object or cause it to become completely inoperable. The assessment of static resilience should be dealt with mainly by objects that are included in local, regional, national, and international critical infrastructure. ritical infrastructure is the basis of today's modern functioning society. The paper is focused on design of the static resilience evaluation of objects in the rail transport. The proposed method of static resilience assessment is based on safety pillars and is applied in a case study to a specific object of the rail transport. This approach is original in the conditions of the Slovak Republic.

Strategy Management in improving the quality of staffing services in the Probolinggo District Education Office. The purpose of this article was to study the management of strategies carried out by the Education Office of Probolinggo District specifically service personnel and the quality of staffing services from the implementation of the management strategies in the Probolinggo District Education Office. This study uses qualitative methods with a type of case study research. The data analysis used is the Interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman. The results is showed that the management strategy carried out by the Probolinggo District Education Office was also applied to staffing services guided by the Provincial RPJP and Probolinggo District RPJMD using a strategic planning process, implementing strategies and evaluation strategies. And the quality of the Probolinggo District Education Office staffing services after the strategy management has been fairly good with reference to the fulfillment of five service standards.

The investigation of information systems (IS) development usually relies on two different research approaches, namely, quantitative approach and qualitative approach. Both approaches are equally important and useful to the development of IS theories. No research approach should be considered to be superior or inferior to the other. However, the mainstream of Chinese IS research mainly follows the quantitative approach, whereas the qualitative approach is generally viewed as “too soft” or not scientific enough. As a qualitative approach, desk case-study research approach has been widely accepted and applied in a number of IS research in the West. However, in China, this approach is merely considered as an effective approach for teaching, but not valid for scientific research investigations. Thus, Chinese IS research have neglected a number of important experiences, viewpoints and lessons, which can be elicited from IS case-studies occurred in the past. This chapter generally aims at introducing and discussing the desk case-study approach in IS research. Specifically, this chapter discusses this approach through four incremental research stages, namely, defining the research question, establishing theoretical framework from literature review, case-study selection, and theory formulation through case-study analysis. Furthermore, two exemplary research projects are presented in this chapter to further clarify and substantiate the research methods, tools and processes. It is expected that by formulating a rigorous research framework and specifying incremental processes of theory development, this research approach could be accepted and used by Chinese IS scholars in the future.

AbstractProtection of vital records in an organization is a must. The position of the vital records in the organization's performance enables the organization to do some protection to its vital records. This study aims to analyze the application of disaster recovery and contingency plan in the protection of vital records in the Yogyakarta Land Regency. This research uses qualitative approach with case study research method. Data analysis is used to identify any vital rechords managed by BPN DIY, as well as possible disasters. Disaster Recovery and Contingency Plan concept is used to perform strategy mapping in disaster management for protection of vital records at  BPN DIY. The results of this study are expected to gives recommendations to government for the implementation of disaster management strategies (pre disaster, during disasters and post disaster) to vital records in government agencies.IntisariPerlindungan arsip vital dalam suatu organisasi merupakan keharusan. Posisi arsip vital dalam kinerja organisasi memungkinkan organisasi untuk melakukan perlindungan terhadap arsip vitalnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penerapan Disaster Recovery and Contingency Plan dalam perlindungan arsip vital di Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode penelitian studi kasus. Analisis data digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi setiap arsip vital yang dikelola oleh BPN DIY, serta kemungkinan terjadinya bencana. Konsep Disaster Recovery and Contingency Plan digunakan untuk melakukan pemetaan strategi dalam penanggulangan bencana untuk perlindungan arsip vital di BPN DIY. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan rekomendasi kepada pemerintah untuk pelaksanaan strategi penanggulangan bencana terhadap arsip vital di lembaga pemerintah (pra bencana, selama bencana dan pasca bencana).

With the topic of Smart Grids taking up momentum, challenges to integrate systems from various vendors’ at large scale in a critical infrastructure have arisen. This issue is usually tackled utilizing standards and, therefore, agreements between the various parties. However, the aspect of the interoperability between systems is not only defined by physical connections, but has a multi-faceted dimension which needs to be dealt with at all layers in order for a semantic and cost-efficient integration. Within this contribution, we motivate the need for a procedural way to deal with interoperability in Smart Grids, show the theoretical foundations and the approach taken and present case studies that cover the problem in scope. Based on these case studies, results are critically reflected and conclusions are drawn.

<p>The critical infrastructure resilience depends on several factors that go beyond the physical reliability and capacity to repair the system after a disruption. The overall critical infrastructure resilience includes aspects related to the social and economic backbone governing its capacity to deliver its service. This contribution presents a theoretical toolkit to calculate the overall resilience of critical infrastructures developed within the European project LIQUEFACT for earthquake- induced soil liquefaction disasters. The toolkit combine several aspects organized in three dimensions: organizational and management, the physical or technical system and operational capacity to deliver the service. The toolkit clearly defines also resilience aspects, such as preparedness, absorption, recovery and adaptation. For each dimension and aspect of the resilience several indicators are developed. A critical and technical explanation of each indicator is here proposed, as well a systematic methodology to combine them in the resilience toolkit. The novelty of this study is the systematic analysis of dimensions, aspects and indicators that made the proposed resilience toolkit original. The study is concluded with analyses of feasibility of the toolkit to natural disasters and applicability to localized disasters, such as earthquake-induced soil liquefaction events. Finally, the key factors of toolkit influencing a built asset model of critical infrastructures are identified.</p>
