This study investigated the types of English teacher’s questioning strategy and Students’ perceptions towards the use of teacher questioning strategy in EFL classroom interaction. This study was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang with five students as the participants taken from the twelfthgrade nature science students by using purposeful convenience sampling. In collecting data, the researcher used one-on-one interviews through open-ended questions. The interviews conducted in the class XII IPA 1. The result of this study that those were three types of English teacher’s questioning strategy, they were (1) procedural, convergent, and (3) divergent, and the students’ perceptions toward questioning strategy, they were (1) English reading activity, (2) English speaking activity, (3) English writing activity, and (4) English listening activity. This study indicated that those were the students’ perceptions towards the types of teacher’s questioning strategy that used in EFL classroom interaction at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang.

Background: The reading interest rate of Indonesian society is relatively low (approximately 0,001). Meanwhile, during their study, medical students have to read numerous English literatures. Previous research showed that reading activity can be improved by reading motivation. However, studies about Indonesian medical students reading motivation on English literature are still limited. This study aims to assess the effect of students’ English literature reading motivation to the block exam average score.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in January 2018. We used stratified random sampling, and we found 274 samples that fit with inclusion and exclusion criterias selected. The motivation was assessed using the English literature reading motivation scale, block exam test results were obtained through the academic database. Data were analyzed with multiple linier regression test.Result: Students’ English reading motivation increased the block exam average score of Medical Students. Every increase of one score of motivation significantly increase 0,10 score block exam average (p<0,001). Furthermore, every increase of one year of study can significantly increase 3,53 of block exam average score (p<0,001); R2=18,3 %. English literature reading motivation of medical students UNS is in middle category.Conclusion: English literature reading motivation increase the block exam average score of Medical Students in UNS.

This research manages to analyze the effectiveness of  DRA in enhancing students ‘skill in reading comprehension. The researchers carried out the research at SMP N 4 Takengon, in which they found that teachers faced some problems in teaching reading comprehension to students. To figure out the answer, the research applies quantitative research with experimental approach. After statistically obtaining and interpreting the data, the study concludes that Directed Reading Activity (DRA) method is able to increase students reading comprehension skill. This is because that Directed Reading Activity (DRA) is a teacher strategy in reading comprehension that emphasizes on instructional support before, during, and aftermath the reading. Meanwhile, the research found that this strategy is also able to increase and build stronger student vocabulary and reading skill. In conclusion, the DRA strategy is effective in improving students’ ability in reading comprehension, and also building their vocabulary.

Language is the most important aspect in human interaction. People communicate and interact with other using the language. In global community, English has become an international language that is used by many people around the world. Reading is one of English language skills and it is one of the ways to learn English. Reading activity should get more attention. It is because there are many students who get some difficulties in understanding a text. In this research inform the using of talking stick in teaching reading. The objective of this research was to find out whether there was any significant difference in improvement the reading ability of recount text of the tenth grade students of SMK Rosma Karawang in academic year 2018/2019 by using talking stick method. The method used was quantitative method. In this research the writer used pre-experimental design of one group pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed by using paired sample test and processed by using SPSS 23 for windows. The results of the research showed there was significant increase of student’s reading ability.Keywords: Teaching, Reading, Talking Stick

AbstractCorpora have been suggested as valuable sources for teaching English for academic purposes (EAP). Since previous studies have mainly focused on corpus use in classroom settings, more research is needed to reveal how students react to using corpora on their own and what should be provided to help them become autonomous corpus users, considering that their ultimate goal is to be independent scholars and writers. In the present study, conducted in an engineering lab at a Korean university over 22 weeks, data on students’ experiences and evaluations of consulting general and specialized corpora for academic writing were collected and analyzed. The findings show that, while both corpora served the participants well as reference sources, the specialized corpus was particularly valued for its direct help in academic writing because, as non-native English-speaking graduate engineering students, the participants wanted to follow the writing conventions of their discourse community. The participants also showed disparate attitudes toward the time taken for corpus consultation due to differences in factors such as academic experience, search purposes, and writing tasks. The article concludes with several suggestions for better corpus use with EAP students regarding the compilation of a corpus, corpus training, corpus competence, and academic writing.

Revolutionary Industry 4.0 demands the advanced of technology supports not only in evolutionary level of information and communication, but also in education. Seeking to promote interest of English in higher level of education, this study aims to find out students’ experiences in utilizing Blog to learn English especially writing activity. some  researchers have About 15 of Non-English first-grade undergraduate students focusing on Mathematics Education Department will participate in this study. By conducting qualitative research method, questionnaires to 15 students are given to gain the data. The data from questionnaires then be interpreted for the experiences in utilizing blog in English writing activity. The result reveals that blog gave the students a place to share their ideas, exchange ideas, and improve their English as well as their writing ability. Utilizing blog in writing activity also gave them more knowledge about ICT especially in bloging. The findings also lead to some points for the teacher to consider before they utilize blog in writing activity. First, it is about time allocation and second is about involvement of larger number of students. The finding also suggest the teacher to provide longer time in doing blog project and big class is needed to have more meaningful interaction in the blog itself.

This experimental study aims to investigate the effect of anxiety and classroom interaction on English speaking performance. This research was conducted in Perbanas Institute-Jakarta involving 32 students who were selected using simple random sampling. Using Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), 16 students were identified as students with high anxiety and 16 other students were grouped as students with low anxiety. Then, in practicing speaking skill, a combination of  students with low and high anxiety  were regrouped into  the controlled group which was dominated by lecturer-learners interaction and experimental group which was dominated by learner-learners interaction.  Using 2 X 2 two-way anova, the data was analysed. The findings revealed that: first, the anxiety influenced the English speaking performance; second, the classroom interaction affected English speaking performance; however, there was no interaction between anxiety and classroom interaction on English speaking performance.

Tourism is an important industry that has created a lot of income for many nations, including Thailand; therefore, it is essential to increase its potential as a more sustainable and successful industry, in particular to support a sustainable recovery of nations’ economies after a tough situation like Covid-19. The present study was carried out to investigate tourism staff’s problems and needs for using English at work and to explore their needs for improving English for their work. The participants were 200 hotel staff in Phang Nga Province, Thailand. Data were collected through a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed for data analysis. The findings showed that in general, the hotel staff’s problem in using English at work was at a moderate level (M=2.76, S.D.=1.11). They had English writing problems the most. They found it very difficult to write letters or e-mails in English. Regarding their needs for using English, it was found that every English skill was rated at a high level (M=3.75, S.D.=1.11), and English speaking was the most necessary. The hotel staff reported that they had to speak English to welcome, greet and say good-bye to foreign guests. Pertaining to their needs for improving English, overall, the hotel staff needed to improve their English skills at a high level (M=3.85, S.D.=0.98). They highly needed to improve their English use in every aspect, especially English listening. Based on the interview information, English courses, handbooks or applications relating to English for hotels are truly needed for their English use improvement.

<em>Classroom interaction emphasizes on the effectiveness of the students participation in the dialogue, and finally improving the ability of speaking. It involves all participants; teacher, learners and learning sources. There are some different purpose of using speaking. Each purpose implies knowledge of the rules that account for how spoken language reflects the context in which the speech occurs (Richard and Renandya, 2002:201). The study aims at finding out how classroom interaction employed in speaking class at SMA Santu Fransiskus Ruteng, Flores.  It’s used mixed method combining the use of descriptive quantitative and qualitative study design with phenomenological approach. It’s used random sampling, with 45 students taken as the samples. Meanwhile, employing a qualitative research design and phenomenological approach, the data for this study are mostly collected through interview completed by observation and documentation. For the purpose of deep interview, the participants are 1 English teacher and 4 students taken purposively. The study showed that 1) there is one aspect of classroom interaction mostly categorized as high level of implementation; Response and Asks Questions (28=62.2%). Data of interviewed confirmed that students needs appreciation for learning progress or achievement they may make. It encourages them to be more active and participative. 2) Feelings acceptance, praises or encouragement, and  ideas use or acceptance implementation (40=88.9%) and giving directions, criticisms or authority justification (38=84.4%) were mostly in the category of medium level. Meanwhile, initiation was mostly in the category of low level (24=53.3%). Data of interview confirmed that low initiation is caused by students learning habit. Most students do the activities of learning English when English teacher fosters them to learn. It’s in the form of quiz, assignment, mid test or final test. Leaning is merely conducted to improve and increase English score. Other activities such as memorizing vocabularies, writing stories, answering questions based on the passages, building up sentences and other classroom activities designed are done under teacher’s control and design. In the next phase, students find it difficult to accomplish complex tasks. They are only able to accomplish simple tasks. Learning autonomy which is oriented to build up speaking ability hardly ever done.  To this extend, English teacher pay more attention to the topic chosen in teaching learning processes. It determines whether the students initiate interaction or not.</em>
