The aim of this paper is to examine the determinants of capital structure (profitability, size, risk and growth). The sample is composed of 39 Bahraini firms listed in Bahrain Stock Market. The study covered the period 2011-2015. Correlation and regression analysis have been used to identify the relationship between the capital structure determinants and debt leverages (book leverage and market leverage). Correlation analysis aims to identify this relationship at market level and at sectorial level. Regression analysis objective is to anticipate the models characterizing the relationships between determinants and capital leverages. Results of the analysis shows negative significant relationship between profitability and dependent variables, with more significance relationship with market leverage. This relationship is demonstrated in market level and in insurance and services sectors between profitability and book leverage. When the market leverage is the dependent variable this relationship is valid in market level and in banking, hotels, insurance and services sectors. Positive significant relationship has been found between size and both leverages in market level. Similar result is detected on sectorial level in banking, industrial, investment and services when the dependent variable is book leverage. Size-market leverage relationship is positive and significant also in insurance, investment and services sectors. The relationship risk—book leverage is significant only on sectorial level in Industrial, insurance and investment sectors. In term of market leverage—risk relationship, significant relationship is detected in market level and in investment and services sectors. Regression analysis results present a significant linear model reflecting the relationship between determinants of capital structure and leverages.

Subject. The article addresses building the optimal capital structure in the face of financial globalization, taking into account the ever-changing factors of external economic and geopolitical environment, including the financial crisis. Objectives. The purpose is to perform empirical tests of hypotheses about the nature of corporate financial leverage dependence on traditional determinants during and after the financial crisis in Russia's emerging market. I used a large data set on 49 public companies in seven leading sectors of the Russian economy from 2011 to 2017. Methods. The study employs the correlation and regression analysis. Results. The results of correlation and regression analysis show that the application of traditional theories of capital structure in the current conditions of financial globalization in a developing country is ineffective for forming an optimal capital structure; macroeconomic factors have a significant impact on the formation of corporate capital structures, which is particularly reflected during and after the crisis; the financial crisis has a considerable impact on the capital structure of companies; the determinant of stock market development has a real impact on leverage and plays an important role in financial decision-making after the financial crisis. Conclusions. I revealed inverse relationship between the leverage and variable size of companies after financial crisis, which contradicts to the trade-off theory and corresponds to the pecking order theory. This supports the hypothesis that macroeconomic factors are crucial, but the variable of stock market development has increased essentially as compared to the pre-crisis period.

This study investigated the effect of audit committee effectiveness on the timeliness of financial reporting in Nigeria using listed companies in the food and beverages industrial sector of Nigeria economy. The period under review spans from 2011-2015. Data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential methods of statistical analysis. Descriptive statistical analyses employed include mean and standard deviation while inferential statistical analyses employed in the study include correlation and regression analysis. The study revealed that there is no significant relationship between audit committee size and timeliness of financial reporting among listed food and beverages companies in Nigeria. The study further revealed that the relationship between frequency of meetings and timeliness of financial reporting among listed food and beverages companies in Nigerian is not significant. The study concluded that a proportional increase in frequency of meetings will increase timeliness of financial reporting and vice versa and this is not statistically significant meaning that frequency of meetings have no significant relationship with timeliness of financial reporting. The study recommended that audit committee size should not be increased beyond the regulatory specification of six.

Students without prior research experience may not know how to conceptualize and design a study. This article explains how an understanding of the classification and operationalization of variables is the key to the process. Variables describe aspects of the sample that is under study; they are so called because they vary in value from subject to subject in the sample. Variables may be independent or dependent. Independent variables influence the value of other variables; dependent variables are influenced in value by other variables. A hypothesis states an expected relationship between variables. A significant relationship between an independent and dependent variable does not prove cause and effect; the relationship may partly or wholly be explained by one or more confounding variables. Variables need to be operationalized; that is, defined in a way that permits their accurate measurement. These and other concepts are explained with the help of clinically relevant examples.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate outdoor PM2.5 infiltration into multifamily homes according to the building characteristics using regression models. Field test results from 23 multifamily homes were analyzed to investigate the infiltration factor and building characteristics including floor area, volume, outer surface area, building age, and airtightness. Correlation and regression analysis were then conducted to identify the building factor that is most strongly associated with the infiltration of outdoor PM2.5. The field tests revealed that the average PM2.5 infiltration factor was 0.71 (±0.19). The correlation analysis of the building characteristics and PM2.5 infiltration factor revealed that building airtightness metrics (ACH50, ELA/FA, and NL) had a statistically significant (p < 0.05) positive correlation (r = 0.70, 0.69, and 0.68, respectively) with the infiltration factor. Following the correlation analysis, a regression model for predicting PM2.5 infiltration based on the ACH50 airtightness index was proposed. The study confirmed that the outdoor-origin PM2.5 concentration in highly leaky units could be up to 1.59 times higher than that in airtight units.
