In this paper, a proposal for a criterion for designing and implementing MCQ exams in engineering mechanics course is introduced. The special case of a very large number of engineering students in Alexandria University is considered as a case study. In this case, a quick, though accurate and fair, method of evaluating students’ performance is a must especially when using the credit hour system. Full Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) and computer based exams become so common. However, hybrid/subjective or total subjective exams are still in use in some institutions. Even though the process of implementing MCQ exams is well known and mature in humanity courses, in technical courses, sometimes, this process is not straightforward. It may depend on experience as it becomes well established and of minimum time after being applied for many years. In addition, the technical ability of the used software gives instructors more capabilities in analyzing results and establishing a basis for learning statistics. The case of coordinated engineering mechanics course with large number of students is emphasized. A hierarchy of procedures starting from ideas of questions till finishing grading and inputting grades in bulk into online system is formulated. The proposed methodology is of low cost and not so sensitive to technical abilities of software. Also, it doesn’t require instructors with detailed computer knowledge. Finally, it can be used by instructors in other universities as it formulated to be of generic nature.

Abstract The paper is to present a case study where different methods of programming are utilized by Mechanical Engineering Students to design a device. The objective is to provoke discussion and explore best practices on teaching Mechanical Engineering students the programming aspects. The task is to design a low-cost device that can accurately measure the period of a simple pendulum. Same raw materials, infrared break beam sensor and Arduino microcontroller, are given. But different programming approaches can be undertaken. Option 1 is to use C language and Arduino’s free Integrated Development Environment. Option 2 is to use Simulink with Arduino Support. Student survey is designed based on whether it is intuitive, whether it is easier to debug, etc. Further studies can be conducted to understand the effectiveness of a mixture of these different methods and sequence of exposure to these different methods.

AbstractNonwovens are one of the most versatile textile materials and have become increasingly popular in almost all sectors of the economy due to their low manufacturing costs and unique properties. In the next few years, the world market of nonwovens is predicted to grow by 7%–8% annually (International Nonwovens & Disposables Association [INDA], European Disposables and Nonwovens Association [EDANA], and Markets and Markets). This article aims to analyze the most recent trends in the global export and import of nonwovens, to present two case studies of Polish companies that produce them, and to present one special case study of the market of nonwoven geotextiles in China and India, which are the Asian transition economies among the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).

AbstractProblem-based learning as a teaching tool is now used globally in many areas of higher education. It provides an opportunity for students to explore technical problems from a system-level perspective and to be self-directed life-long learner which is mandatory for equipping engineering students with the skill and knowledge. This paper presents a case study illustrating the effectiveness of implemented Problem-based learning (PBL) during five semesters in the undergraduate programs of Textile Engineering in Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST). An assessment has been done on the basis of feedback from the students as well as their employers by conducting an empirical survey for the evaluation of PBL impact to enhance the student's competencies. The Evaluations indicate that students have achieved remarkable competencies through PBL practices which helped them to be competent in their professional life.

Abstract Cold temperature failures are often difficult to resolve, especially those at extreme low levels (< -40°C). Momentary application of chill spray can confirm the failure mode, but is impractical during photoemission microscopy (PEM), laser scanning microscopy (LSM), and multiple point microprobing. This paper will examine relatively low-cost cold temperature systems that can hold samples at steady state extreme low temperatures and describe a case study where a cold temperature stage was combined with LSM soft defect localization (SDL) to rapidly identify the cause of a complex cold temperature failure mechanism.

The optic nerve carries visual information from your eye to your brain. Optic neuritis is when your optic nerve becomes inflamed. Optic neuritis can flare up suddenly from an infection or nerve disease. The inflammation usually causes temporary vision loss that typically happens in only one eye. Those with Optic neuritis sometimes experience pain. As you recover and the inflammation goes away, your vision will likely return. There are no direct references in our classics regarding optic neuritis but can be contemplated as a condition by name Parimlayi Timira. The specific management as such is not cited but a transcendence approach can be done with adopting the treatment which has the ability to pacify the already occurred pathology and prevent the further development of the disease. One such interesting case study on Optic neuritis is elaborated here where in specific treatment modalities (Shodana, Shamana and Kriyakalpas) played role in pacifying the condition.

With stringent environmental regulations and a new drive for sustainable manufacturing, there is an unprecedented opportunity to incorporate novel manufacturing techniques. Recent political and pandemic events have shown the vulnerability to supply chains, highlighting the need for localised manufacturing capabilities to better respond flexibly to national demand. In this paper, we have used the spinning mesh disc reactor (SMDR) as a case study to demonstrate the path forward for manufacturing in the post-Covid world. The SMDR uses centrifugal force to allow the spread of thin film across the spinning disc which has a cloth with immobilised catalyst. The modularity of the design combined with the flexibility to perform a range of chemical reactions in a single equipment is an opportunity towards sustainable manufacturing. A global approach to market research allowed us to identify sectors within the chemical industry interested in novel reactor designs. The drivers for implementing change were identified as low capital cost, flexible operation and consistent product quality. Barriers include cost of change (regulatory and capital costs), limited technical awareness, safety concerns and lack of motivation towards change. Finally, applying the key features of a Sustainable Business Model (SBM) to SMDR, we show the strengths and opportunities for SMDR to align with an SBM allowing for a low-cost, sustainable and regenerative system of chemical manufacturing.
