Piano instruction—composition, arrangement and tutoring has been a pivotal part of music education. Several countries across the globe have encapsulated it into curriculums and syllabi. Its benefits span several genres of music. It has been part of music education at the tertiary level in Ghana but has not received enough attention and is also faced with several challenges. The study sought to examine the piano playing proficiency among tertiary students within the Ghanaian context and the various factors responsible for the challenges faced and propose contextual interventions to address the issue. The study made use of the qualitative methodology. The instruments used for data collection were semi-structured interviews and participant observations. It was evident that piano playing among tertiary students needs rapt attention in terms of tutorials, well-equipped studio space and competent personnel to handle the tutelage. It is recommended that stakeholders shift the focal lens to piano playing proficiency in music education students as one of the requirements for graduation.

For music teachers to be most effective, they must possess the dispositions that best facilitate their students’ learning. In this article, we present and discuss the findings of a study in which we sought to explore music majors’ self-appraisals in and the extent to which they value the disposition areas of reflectivity, empathic caring, musical comprehensiveness, and musical learnability orientation. Evidence from a survey of 110 music majors suggested that music education students possess and value the dispositions of reflectivity, musical comprehensiveness, and musical learnability orientation more highly after they have matured through their college careers. Additionally, based on their responses to music teaching scenarios, it appears that senior music education majors possess greater empathic caring than do their freshman counterparts.

The primary problem of this study is to determine whether there is a significant relationship between the attitudes towards harmony courses and the piano playing habits of the students. In this study, a correlational survey model was employed. The population of this study consisted of students who are studying at music departments in Turkey during the academic year of 2019–2020 and the sample included 248 students from nine different universities and four different departments related to music (Music Education, Performance, Musicology and Turkish Music). For data collection purposes, the scale of attitudes towards harmony courses developed, the scale of piano playing habits developed and a questionnaire to determine the variables affecting students’ habits and attitudes developed by the researcher were used. There is no significant difference found between the students’ departments and their piano playing habits. The study revealed that students’ piano playing habits varied according to their personal instruments. Keywords: Attitudes, harmony education, music education, music theory, piano education.

This research seeks to understand the type of influence that the hotel sector in Portugal can achieve in its consumers, being the tourism sector an area in constant growth. To that end, a qualitative methodology was adopted, using semi-structured interviews, as a data collection tool to understand the type of use that hotels attribute to social networks, as well as the results obtained from their practices. In the investigation nine hotels were analyzed, presenting a diversified sample between the participants in terms of capacity, as well as recognition, proving that, in a general way, social networks help in the divulgation of the hotel, presenting these as a direct channel for consumers, facilitating brand exposure as well as interaction with customers.

AbstractThis study is part of a more extensive evaluation of the Barbacana program for the prevention of drug use, aimed at secondary education students, the objective is two-fold: 1. To analyse the main tools employed in the program and to evaluate the implementation process, observing how the scheduled activities have been developed. 2. To evaluate the results, describing the benefits of the program for the target population and the achievement of its foreseen goals. To achieve the first objective, a qualitative methodology, based on semi-structured interviews to the professors responsible of applying the program at different centres within the Valencian Community, will be carry out. From the resulting information, we can observe that the materials and the process of the program have been qualified as positive or very positive by the prevention agents and by the target group. For the second objective, a quasi-experimental design with two groups of non-equivalent comparison have been chosen, within the same period of time, which will allow us to measure the differences and similarities between the two groups and to confirm our initial causal hypothesis: “The differences among the students from the experimental and control groups, regarding information and consumption levels of the drugs, are due, basically, to the application of the Barbacana program."

ABSTRACTThis study focuses on knowledge of the difficulties to achieve the autonomy of the schools and to advance in their capacity of management, from the perspective of school principals. The research presented has employed a qualitative methodology in which 20 directors have collaborated, 70% are men and the remaining 30% are women. The data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews, which had a flexible script of open questions written based on the development of the autonomy of the centers. The content analysis of the different interviews carried out established a system of categories, codes and frequencies that allowed us to establish the weight of each of the categories.

Distance education is popular among the education students of the Virtual University.  This study aims to examine the current curriculum content in distance education to gauge if they are still able to keep the students engaged.  To be able to do that, a variety of ICT technologies have been set up in the university to cater to the needs of the distance education students majoring in educational management.  A qualitative methodology was used specifically using semi-structured interviews on ten randomly chosen respondents representing all the four years of college study, and a representative for each gender.  This was done to capture all the possible answers they may give in terms of their cultural backgrounds, their gender and their social status. The results showed that among their five lessons for this semester, the most popular were Conflict Resolution and Community Relations.  The least popular was school finance.  In terms of the level of engagement and interest levels, most of the respondents had high scores of 9 and above which showed their high interest in the course they are studying.  The presence of the ICT technology has definitely enhanced their experience and most respondents have said that they are very thankful for the experiences they’ve had with the learning management systems (LMS) because it allowed them to interact with their co-students and teachers from Taiwan. These interactions have served as the respondents’ bridge to learning how other cultures teach these particular topics and how they process their learnings as well.

Studying the evolution of traditional arts in the XXI century brings with it the need to take into account a series of other concepts that are somewhat new in the study of traditional cultures, namely: pseudo-traditions and traditional kitsch, and also of already existing concepts such as the process of traditionalization and the adapting process of traditional arts. To better define these new concepts and to understand the reason behind the change in the traditional arts, I have chosen to use a grounded theory approach to the research to highlight and point out the reason and process behind the adaption and evolution of traditional arts. The method I intend to use to collected data is in-depth interviewing combined with the observation of the interviewee in his environment or surrounded by his creations. But the Covid-19 pandemic has overthrown the data collection plans. In this article I want to emphasize the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has on data collection and analysis, impacting the result of the research overall. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced me to reassess the data collection method approach. The in-depth interviews have transformed into semi-structured or even structured interviews, with the interviewee being able to easily avoid sensitive or disliked questions. It also takes the possibility of the researcher to analyze the behavior or reactions of the interviewee, limiting the data analyzed. The difference between the quality of data collected from face-to-face interviews compared to telephone or on-line interviewing is emphasized by the degree of the interviewee’s openness when discussing sensitive subjects, the predominance of non-opinion answers or evasive ones. In this article I want to emphasize the effect of the pandemic on the research of traditional arts using a qualitative methodology. Although on-line video interviews offer a closer to face-to-face interview experience, the interviewee is more prone to avoiding sensitive subjects or ending the interview altogether.

This paper explores the role of higher education institutions in enhancing the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) ecosystem in Brunei Darussalam, particularly with regard to improving the spirit of entrepreneurship and the motivation to seek opportunities independently to propel the country’s transition economy forward. A qualitative methodology was adopted for data collection, using semi-structured interviews with Bruneian and German SME owner/managers and sales representatives. The economics perspective of the institutional framework was employed to identify the formal and informal constraints faced by SMEs in Brunei Darussalam. Recommendations are offered to inform the relevant stakeholders about the key issues faced by SMEs so that appropriate forms of guidance and benchmarking can be provided to facilitate the country’s economic development.

The development of musicianship is a fundamental learning outcome for music students. The purpose of this study was to examine the early socialization experiences of preservice music teachers, as well as their opinions about musicianship. A total of 138 undergraduate music education students completed a three-part online questionnaire. The large ensemble setting was the most common source of learning and participants believed this setting contributed to the development of overall musicianship more so than any other source of learning. “Learning songs from notation” and “Music analysis” were perceived as most valuable in developing musicianship. Kruskal–Wallis tests showed differences in conceptions of musicianship based on the instrument played, but not among other socialization variables. Based on the findings, I conclude that preservice music teachers are being socialized to conceive of musicianship in ways that suit an existing school model, rather than contemporary and evolving music cultures found outside of schools.

However, the vocational characteristics of students that suffer from some kind of dissability have been less studied. The qualitative apporach with it use of semi-structured interviews is the best way to find out the needs and unique characteristics of these students in order to deliver quality counseling services. Qualitative methodology shows us that vocational and career counseling should be based on three domains: the socio-personal domain, the personal autonomy domain, and the vocational domain. An example of counseling directed to the vocational domain could be the use of University-based counseling services, but should not be restricted to this educational level. This research attempts is a first step to develop specialized counseling services for students with some kind of visual impairment.
