Every year, approximately 5 million new HIV and AIDS cases are diagnosed worldwide. With advances in treatment, the lifespan of patients with HIV/AIDS has been extended, with the disease becoming a chronic condition, meaning that long-term care is necessary and complicated. Through effective treatment compliance with high-potency antiviral medication, in viva viral replication can be suppressed; thus, the life expectancy of individual patients can be extended. Therefore, taking medication regularly is crucial for patients. This study employed the grounded theory approach, using a semi structured method to conduct in-depth interviews with 10 participants with HIV/AIDS in Taiwan. Open, axial, and selective coding were used for data analysis. Results: The five categories comprised symptoms resulting from HIV/AIDS, the initial reaction to HIV/AIDS diagnosis, preventative strategies for self-protection, management of interpersonal relationships, and strategies for taking medication regularly. The core category was accepting reality and living with HIV/AIDS. This paper suggests that public education should be used to remove the stigma of HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, combining prevention, education, consultation, counseling, testing, and treatment for effective management can increase medication compliance.

The number of People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) is steadily increasing. HIV/AIDS is caused by a virus that infects the body and weakens the immune system, making it difficult to fight germs, viruses, fungi, and other pathogens. HIV and AIDS are still considered taboo diseases that should not be openly discussed. People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are discouraged from seeking treatment due to stigma and discrimination. Eliminating stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS will improve the process of preventing and overcoming HIV/AIDS cases. In addition, therapeutic communication also affects interpersonal relationships. This research aims to figure out how the therapeutic communication efforts of People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) become survivors. The method used in this research is phenomenology, where the informants in this study are people with HIV/AIDS who live in Surabaya. This study concludes that therapeutic communication efforts to People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are by presenting volunteers who help people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) based on the same fate as People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The presence of volunteers (PLWHA) assists and bridges the gap between patients and therapy, fostering a sense of comfort for PLWHA. They also make other patients feel more at ease while they are receiving treatment in the hospital.


Subject The implications of advances on HIV therapies. Significance A first-stage clinical trial on treating HIV and AIDS published its results in April. It showed that the use of a therapeutic antibody -- 3BNC117 -- against HIV/AIDS may be effective, safe and well-tolerated in humans. This demonstrates the potential of neutralising antibodies against HIV/AIDS and proves for the first time the feasibility of an antibody-based HIV/AIDS therapy. Impacts The less frequent dosage schedule of 3BNC117 might increase treatment compliance, reducing overall HIV transmission. The successful design of protective antibodies may have the capacity to confer protection against HIV in healthy individuals for life. This would effectively create an HIV vaccine, transforming HIV care worldwide.

Current adolescent HIV infection rates support the need for early HIV/AIDS prevention education. This article describes a successful service-learning project in which undergraduate health education students developed and taught an elementaryschool HIV/AIDS prevention education curriculum that included a compassion component involving donation of teddy bears to community members affected with HIV/AIDS.

Background and purpose: The incidence of first line ART failure is increasing in the South East Asia region. The main referral hospital in Bali has recorded an increased use of second line ART due to the first line ART failure. This study aims to explore risk factors associated to first line ART failure.Methods: A case control study was conducted among people living with HIV and AIDS at Sanglah Hospital Denpasar who started first line ART between 2004 and 2013. Cases were those who diagnosed as having clinical treatment failure and still on treatment in 2015. Controls were those with no treatment failure. Sex and year of ART initiation were matched between case and control. Data were obtained from medical records that include initial regiments, HIV mode of transmission, the WHO HIV clinical stage, CD4 count, opportunistic infections, body mass index, hemoglobin level, and drug substitution at the beginning and during treatment. Risk factors were analysed using logistic regression.Results: Out of 68 HIV/AIDS patients with clinical ART failure, 72.1% were confirmed with immunological and 36.8% were confirmed with virological failure. Median time before treatment failure was 3.5 years. Factors associated to ART failure were HIV clinical stage IV with (AOR=3.43; 95%CI=1.65-7.13) and being widow/widower (AOR=4.85; 95%CI=1.52-15.53). Patients with TB co-infection have a lower risk for treatment failure due to early diagnosis and treatment through TB-HIV program with (AOR=0.32; 95%CI=0.14-0.70).Conclusions: Higher HIV clinical stage at ART initiation increases the risk of treatment failure. HIV-TB co-infection indirectly reduces the risk of treatment failure.

Aim The present study aimed to explore the impact that changes in behavioural symptoms of people living with dementia have on professional caregiver and resident relationships. Method A total of 21 interviews were carried out with professional caregivers of people living with dementia. A grounded theory approach was used to investigate everyday experiences of provision of professional care in dementia settings, focussing specifically on the effect of behavioural change on such relationships. Results A core category emerged from this analysis: ‘Developing behaviour in dementia impacts relationships on a personal and professional level’. Discussion Professionals have recognized as part of their everyday practice an eventual deterioration in relationships between themselves as professional caregivers and the residents, but also between the residents and their family members and among residents themselves. Importantly, understanding patients’ behaviour and behavioural change was identified as a crucial factor to achieve and sustain good relationships between professionals and residents suffering with dementia.

Efforts to stem the tide of the Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic in Africa emphasise the necessity that learners should be able to make informed decisions. Although learners in Zimbabwe’s schools are taught about HIV and AIDS, the extent of their knowledge needed to be determined. The major objective was to assess the knowledge of secondary school learners in Harare, Zimbabwe, about HIV and AIDS. Structured interviews were conducted with 75 Grade 8 (Form 1) secondary school learners from four schools in Harare.Most learners had obtained their HIV and AIDS knowledge from schools, but some did so from their parents, community activities, the radio or television. No learner had commenced with sexual activities and all had heard about HIV, but not all knew what HIV was, and even fewer could define AIDS. Less than one-third of the learners could mention the three most important HIV preventive measures. Most learners were willing to undergo voluntary counselling and testing (VCT), but few had done so. As no learner had commenced sexual activities, opportunities existed to empower Grade 8 (Form 1) learners with adequate HIV and AIDS knowledge. Generally the learners’ HIV and AIDS knowledge levels were high but some misconceptions existed. Schools should engage with radio and television programmes to address misconceptions about HIV and AIDS. Learners should be enabled to access VCT services. More effective HIV prevention education in Zimbabwe’s schools, could enable more youth to remain HIV negative.OpsommingPogings om die Menslike Immuniteitsgebrekvirus (MIV) en Verworwe immuniteits-gebreksindroom (VIGS) pandemiese golf in Afrika te stuit, beklemtoon die noodsaaklikheid dat leerders ingeligte besluite moet kan neem. Die hoofdoelwit was om sekondêre skool leerders van Harare, Zimbabwe, se MIV en VIGS kennis te bepaal. Gestruktureerde onderhoude is gevoer met 75 Graad 8 (Vorm 1) sekondêre skool leerders van vier skole in Harare.Die meeste leerders het hulle MIV and VIGS kennis by skole opgedoen terwyl ‘n paar dit van hulle ouers, gemeenskapsaktiwiteite, die radio en televisie gekry het. Geen leerders het met seksuele aktiwiteite begin nie, almal het van MIV gehoor, maar nie almal het geweet wat MIV is nie, en nog minder kon VIGS definieer. Minder as een-derde kon die drie belangrikste MIV voorkomende maatreëls noem. Die meeste leerders was gewillig om vrywillige berading en toetsing (VBT) te ondergaan, maar min het dit reeds gedoen.Aangesien geen leerder seksueel aktief was nie, bestaan geleenthede om Graad 8 (Vorm 1)leerders te bemagtig om ingeligte besluite te neem. Oor die algemeen was die leerders se MIV en VIGS kennisvlakke hoog, maar wanopvattings het bestaan Skole behoort saam te werk met radio en televisie programme ten einde wanopvattings aan te spreek. Leerders moet in staat gestel word om VBT dienste te benut. Doeltreffender MIV en VIGS voorligting in Zimbabwe se skole, kan meer jong mense in staat stel of HIV negatief te bly.

Background: Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is one of the deadliest diseases that modern medicine has ever had to tackle. Understanding the knowledge about HIV/AIDS in general populations will help in formulating strategy for prevention and treatment. With this background, this study was conducted to assess the knowledge and awareness about HIV/AIDS among general population.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted at C.C.M. Medical College and Hospital, Durg during December 2018 to January 2019. The data was collected from 450 patients attending the medicine outpatient department. Study subjects were selected using convenient sampling technique. Patients giving consent and willing to participate were included in the study. The data was collected in predesigned and pretested questionnaire.Results: 77.11% study participants were aware that unprotected sex can lead to transmission of HIV, 73.78% knew that shaking hands will not transmit the disease. 79.8% knew that use of condom can prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS. Overall males had better knowledge than females. 76.85% said they would behave friendly with people having HIV/AIDS and 69.78% were willing to take care of relatives with HIV.Conclusions: This study indicates that majority participants have good knowledge about difference between HIV and AIDS, modes of transmission and prevention though they were not completely aware of it. The proportion of those with lack of correct knowledge though comparatively less, needs to be taken as a challenge and addressed through well planned health educational activities at various platforms including teaching hospital premises.

Background: AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is a collection of symptoms or diseases caused by a decrease in the immune system from the body due to infection from the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) which belongs to the retroviridae family. Teenagers themselves are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. The right and precise knowledge of HIV and AIDS is important in HIV prevention efforts in adolescents. Method: This research is a descriptive research with cross-sectional design. The sample population of this study was grade XII senior high school students of the 2020/2021 at Methodist – 2 Medan by sampling total sampling. This study was analyzed univariately to look at the descriptive images. Result: From the results of this study, it has obtained that the knowledge level of students grade XII Methodist - 2 Medan had good knowledge about HIV / AIDS with the number of 144 people (70.6%). Conclusion: From this study, it was found that the level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS was mostly in a good category.

HIV / AIDS cases in Indonesia continue to increase and have spread to all provinces in Indonesia. As the province with the highest number of HIV cases, DKI Jakarta through the Provincial AIDS Commission (KPAP) seeks to prevent the increase of HIV / AIDS cases through collaborative governance between the Government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and the public. This collaborative governance is reinforced through Governor Regulation No. 231 of 2015 concerning the Organization and Work Procedure of the Jakarta Capital City Provincial AIDS Commission and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Regulation Number 5 of 2008 concerning HIV and AIDS Prevention. This research was conducted to analyze the process of collaboration between the Government, NGOs and Communities in the DKI Jakarta Province. In addition, this study aimed to provide strategic recommendations for effective collaborative governance in the context of HIV / AIDS prevention in DKI Jakarta Province. This study used descriptive qualitative research methods that described the collaborative process of preventing HIV / AIDS in DKI Jakarta Province. Therefore, this study used a collaborative governance theory that focused on the collaborative process. Based on the research, it was known that collaborative governance has been established between KPAP, Health Office, NGOs, Working Groups (Pokja), and the Community. However, it was still not effective because of the lack of roles of working groups and NGOs that were still dependent on donor agencies in carrying out their activities.
