Design-based case studies allow researchers to examine instructional innovations that are bounded by perspective, context, and time. Design-based case study is an approach that blends case study research with design-based research in order to more systematically examine the process and products of an intervention. This approach provides a framework for engaging in iterative cycles of data collection and analysis to determine if, how, and why goals of instructional innovations have been met. This chapter provides an overview of the design-based case study approach and responds to common concerns surrounding case study and design-based research and how design-based case studies address these concerns by building on the strengths of both approaches.

This study presents an attempt to contribute to the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by conceptualizing systems thinking skills of four- to six-year-old preschool children with the role of age in this particular skill. For this purpose, we developed and tested a method and instruments to assess and conceptualize systems thinking skills of 52 preschool children in early childhood education contexts from Turkey and Germany. By employing qualitative case study research, we concluded that the young children showed some signs of complex understanding regarding systems thinking in terms of detecting obvious gradual changes and two-step domino and/or multiple one-way causalities, as well as describing behavior of a balancing loop. However, their capacity was found to be limited when it comes to detecting a reinforcing loop, understanding system mechanisms by acknowledging the unintended consequences, detecting hidden components and processes, demonstrating multi-dimensional perspective, solving problems through high-leverage interventions, and predicting the future behavior of the system. Age had a notable effect on the total systems thinking mean scores of the participants.

International surveys, such as TIMSS and PISA, frequently put Indonesia in the low ranks. It is an indication that the higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) of students in Indonesia are still low. This research aims to analyze students’ difficulties in solving problems that measure HOTS. This is a case study research with a qualitative approach. Participants studied were 93 high school students in grade XI. Data were collected using test instruments that measure HOTS, which was developed based on the standard contents of high school mathematics. The difficulties were analyzed descriptively by observing students’ errors in answering HOTS test items. Students’ errors were classified based on Newman’s Error Procedure (NEP). The result shows that around 8.33% of the students had difficulties in comprehension, 15.59% in transformation, 32.53% in process skills, and 1.34 % in encoding. Keywords: HOTS problem in mathematics, students’ difficulties, case study, Newman’s error procedure.

This paper discusses the importance of the zoning system in the acceptance of SMA / SMK New Students (PPDB) towards the equal distribution of the quality of Human Resources (HR) in East Java Province. The zoning system in accepting high school / vocational students will prevent the accumulation of certain quality human resources in the region. Zoning of high school / vocational student admissions will encourage equal distribution of quality human resources in an area, making it easier to meet the needs of the workforce to support local economic activities. The author uses a descriptive qualitative approach in analyzing the application of zoning systems in PPDB SMA / SMK in East Java. A qualitative case study strategy was used to explain the impact of the policy in reducing disparity in human resource quality between regions in East Java. In this case, the authors use the assumption that providing equal opportunities to obtain quality education in an area will guarantee the availability of quality human resources equally. This paper presents an interesting analysis, that the direct or indirect PPDB zoning system policies at the SMA / SMK level will encourage even distribution of quality human resources in East Java. First, the high school / vocational PPDB zoning policy avoids the accumulation of high-quality prospective students in only one particular school in a particular region, thus raising exclusivity in the field of education. Second, the implementation of the zoning system policy guarantees the availability of quality workforce equally, because students receive teaching by teachers and educational resources with no different quality. The absence of a gap in the quality of graduates will ultimately increase the even distribution of quality human resources in all regions of East Java.

The standardization process and the success and failure of standards takes place in complex socio-technical settings that are shaped by a variety of factors and a multitude of actors (Gerst et al., 2005). The research reported in this book seeks to establish these factors in relation to the adoption and diffusion of data-exchange standards. Chapter 2 identified that there was a need to investigate the factors and barriers critical to the adoption of data-exchange standards to fill gaps within both the ISO/TC184/SC4 community and the research community for IT-standards adoption. Chapter 3 then introduced the novel approach of taking both an innovation-centric and adopter-centric view to address the research question, and chronicled the development of two conceptual models that capture the key factors to be researched. Following on from that, Chapter 4 went on to discuss the justifications for the interpretivist philosophy, qualitative approach and case study research strategy subscribed to for this phase of the research. Consequently, the aim of this chapter is to verify and examine the validity of the factors identified in the original innovation-centric model. The remainder of this introduction section gives an overview of the data collection and analysis processes that has been used in this chapter, and gives a brief overview of the ISO sub-committee responsible for the development of the two case study standards and concludes with a brief introduction to the chosen standards.

Abstract   The Bekasi City Government uses a zoning system for the registration of prospective new students, especially those applying for junior and senior high schools. For this policy, prospective students are not free to register at the desired school because they must be based on the distance from home to school. This also often triggers academic-based discrimination that often arises in the community. The purpose of this research is to make an application design in one of the schools in Bekasi regarding the design of an online registration application based on the Geographic Information System (GIS). With the application design that is following the data and facts obtained from the analysis of this system, it will be able to provide the final decision of accepting new students at the SMK TI Tunas Harapan school, as a case study.
