Purpose Knowledge has been considered a crucial organizational asset for gaining competitive advantages. It is critical for a firm to maintain a knowledge composition that is productive. This study aims to examine the applicability of the diversity–stability principle in ecology to knowledge management and further investigate the impact of knowledge diversity on firm performance. Design/methodology/approach A theoretical framework for knowledge diversity and firm performance is proposed; a questionnaire survey was conducted to evaluate the research framework. Fifty-eight valid responses from experts were collected to measure knowledge strength and diversity of 20 enterprises in four industries, and financial indexes of the 20 enterprises from 2008 to 2012 were collected to analyze the research model. Findings The results show that higher information technology (IT) capabilities in a firm lead to higher levels of knowledge strength and diversity. The strength and diversity of knowledge in a company can improve average company performance and reduce performance variations. Research limitations/implications This paper presents a new perspective that applies the ecological concept of diversity to examine the value of knowledge in organizations. The findings expand our understanding of the role of IT and knowledge in organizational performance. A limitation is that the sample size is relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Practical implications CEOs and chief knowledge officers can apply the findings herein to assess their organizational knowledge profiles and maintain a healthy knowledge ecology in strategic planning. They should be aware that both knowledge strength and knowledge diversity are crucial to the stability of firm performance. Originality/value The ecological view of knowledge management stresses the importance of maintaining a healthy intensity and diversity of knowledge at the macro level and indicates a new direction for knowledge management.

It is known that "knowledge management" is associated with significant benefits which can empower organisations to get more competitive advantages in their market. Knowledge sharing and knowledge creation are the two vital aspects of knowledge management which play an important role in creating organisational value. The value-creation of knowledge depends on level of sharing knowledge and skills among people across the organisation. So, most companies are focussed on enhancing their capability of knowledge sharing to create new knowledge. The aim of this paper is to test empirically the degree of influence of different knowledge-sharing mechanisms on the knowledge creation capability of Iranian manufacturing industries. A question survey was administered to a sample of manufacturing industries operating in Iran to elicit opinions of the personnel on the relationship between knowledge sharing and knowledge creation. The questions were structured mostly based on Sa'enz et al. (2009) and Choi and Lee (2002) studies. More than 400 respondents from 16 organisations responded to the survey. A short training course was held in all sample firms separately to explain importance and applications of knowledge management for respondents. SPSS and LISREL software were utilised to analyse research data using Regression tests and structural equation modelling (SEM). Results obtained show that knowledge sharing has a positive influence on the knowledge creation in Iranian manufacturing industries. However, a meaningful relationship was observed between information technology and management processes and two constructs of knowledge creation. The main contribution of the paper is to provide empirical evidence about the impact of knowledge sharing on knowledge creation. Moreover, it reveals what the most effective knowledge-sharing mechanisms are for this purpose, and provides companies with some implications in order to shape their knowledge management strategies.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to identify key factors that facilitate knowledge sharing in collectivistic cultures and further help better understand knowledge management in the international context. Design/methodology/approach – Using a survey method, this study collected data from over 200 managerial employees in knowledge management-based project teams from China. Regression analysis was then conducted to analyze the impact of individual differences and environmental factors on the willingness to share knowledge among team members to identify key factors for successful knowledge retention in the constantly changing organizational environment in a collectivistic context. Findings – The results show that incentives are very important in individual’s decision to share knowledge in project teams even in a collectivistic culture like China and both intrinsically and extrinsically motivated individuals tend to share more knowledge with their team members. Individuals with high altruism are also found more likely to share knowledge with others. Moreover, a trusting environment and explicit knowledge will facilitate knowledge sharing for better retention. Research limitations/implications – More studies should be conducted in other collectivistic cultures to explore cultural barriers in knowledge management in the international context and comparative studies using samples from different cultural backgrounds are also encouraged to help extend the theories on knowledge management. Originality/value – While it is well-known that knowledge sharing is essential for organization to maintain competitive advantage, relatively few studies have examined knowledge sharing in collectivistic cultures, and even fewer have done so in China. This study adds values to the literature by identifying key factors for knowledge sharing in China, and thus helps refine the knowledge management theories and provides insights for multinationals on knowledge management in the Chinese market.
