In order to obtain better productivity and a good level of secondary metabolites for cultivating plants with organic residues, it is necessary to define the method of application and the best combination considering plant density. Our objective was to study the influence of the plant arrangement and methods of application of poultry manure in the soil over agroeconomic performance and the antioxidant activity of the hibiscus. Treatments in the field consisted of two plant arrangements (single or double rows, both with 0.50 meters between plants) and four methods of application of poultry manure to the soil [incorporating (10 t ha-1), mulching (10 t ha-1), mulching (5 t ha-1) + incorporating (5 t ha-1) and a control—no poultry manure] and, in the laboratory, antioxidant activity in relation to the treatments in the field and preparation methods (maceration or infusion). Treatments were arranged in randomized blocks of 2 × 4 with four replicates. The greatest production of dried calyx (0.68 t ha-1) and of capsules (1.32 t ha-1), the greatest number of fruits (2.10 million ha-1) and the greatest net income (R$ 36,115.42) resulted of plants cultivated in single rows with the poultry manure covering the crops. The antioxidant activity of the hibiscus calyces showed no variation in relation with field treatments or with the method of preparation. Cultivation in single rows covered with poultry manure is adequate for the hibiscus plant.

Diseases mediated by the immune system are difficult problems to treat such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other lethal viruses. Infections that occur in normal people are generally brief and rarely leave permanent damage. Treatment of this disease requires an aggressive and innovative approach to the development of new treatments so that it requires the role of immunomodulators to improve the immune system. A substance that acts as an enhancer or immune enhancer can be obtained by using herbs that are efficacious as immunostimulants. One of the herbs used is herbal binara (Artemisia vulgaris L) which has been studied as a potential immunomodulator with high antioxidant activity. Previous research also stated that red shoots (Syzygium oleana) were studied as potential immunomodulators with high antioxidant activity. Several other species such as Syzygium samarangense have 16 flavonoida compounds which show pharmacological immunological activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the content of secondary metabolites of ethanol extract of herbal binara (Artemisia vulgaris L.) with red shoots (Syzygium oleana) and to determine the best dose of extract from the ethanol extract of herbal binara (Artemisia vulgaris L.) with red shoots (Syzygium oleana) can reduce the volume of swelling of mouse feet. Examination of the chemical content of secondary metabolites from the ethanol extract of herbal binara (Artemisia vulgaris L.) with red shoots (Syzygium oleana) is carried out by chemical screening and characterization of simplicia and extract. The method used is the slow type hypersensitivity method. In this test the independent variable is the secondary metabolite of ethanol extract of herb binara (Artemisia vulgaris L.) with red shoots (Syzygium oleana) with four concentrations (50, 100, 200 and 400 mg / kgBB). The positive control used by Stimuno dose is 32.5 mg / kgBB

<p><strong>Objective: </strong>The current study was to deal the isolation and identification of secondary metabolites from <em>Polygonum equisetiforme</em> and evaluation of antioxidant activity of its extract.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>The methanol-water extract (7:3) of the air-dried aerial parts of <em>Polygonum equisetiforme</em> was fractionated and separated to obtain the isolated compounds by different chromatographic techniques. Structures of these compounds were elucidated by UV and 1D⁄2D H⁄ C NMR spectroscopy and compared with the literature data. The crude extract was evaluated for <em>in vitro</em> antioxidant activity using the 2,2 diphenyl dipicryl hydrazine (DPPH) method.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Ten secondary metabolites were isolated from <em>Polygonum equisetiforme</em> in this study. Of which three new flavonoids named as 3,5,7,2’,5’ pentahydroxyflavone 3-<em>O</em>-b-D-glucopyranoside (1), 3,5,7,2’,5’ pentahydroxyflavone 3-<em>O</em>-b-D-glucopyranoside 8 C-sulphated (2) and quercetin 3-<em>O-β</em>-D-glucucorinde 6''-methyl ester 8-sulphated (3) as well as quercetin 3-<em>O-β</em>-D-glucucorinde methyl ester (4), quercetin 3-<em>O-</em>β-D-glucopyranoside (5), quercetin 7-<em>O-β-</em>D-glucopyranoside (6),<em> </em>quercetin(7)<sub>, </sub>myricetin (8), <em>P</em><sub>-</sub>methoxy gallic acid methyl ester (9) and gallic acid (10). The antioxidant potential of <em>P. equisetiforme</em> extract was evaluated by investigating it's total phenolic and flavonoid content and DPPH radical scavenging activity whereby the extract showed significant antioxidant activity (IC<sub>50 </sub>= 37.45 μg/ml). The total phenolic and flavonoid content was found to be 130.79±5.502 and 45.8±1.63 μg/ml, respectively.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong><em>Polygonum equisetiforme</em> is a promising medicinal plant, and our study tends to support the therapeutic value of this plant as an antioxidant drug.</p>

Coffee production is one of the main agricultural activities in Brazil, and several coffee cultivars with disease resistance have already been developed. The secondary metabolites produced by plants are closely associated with defense strategies, and the resistance of coffee cultivars to bacterial halo blight (BHB) can be related to these compounds. Therefore, this study aims to compare a partially resistant coffee cultivar (Iapar-59) and a susceptible cultivar (Mundo Novo 376/4) to BHB (Pseudomonas syringae pv. garcae) in relation to the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of the leaf extracts. In addition, this study determined the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and phenolic profiles of the Iapar-59 leaf extracts of plants inoculated with P. syringae pv. garcae. The Iapar-59 extract showed a higher content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids than the Mundo Novo 376/4 extract. Both cultivars contained gallic, chlorogenic and caffeic acids; however, the highest contents were quantified in the Iapar-59 cultivar. The leaf extracts from the Iapar-59 cultivar exhibited higher antioxidant activity. Higher concentrations of gallic, caffeic and chlorogenic acids and the presence of vanillin were detected in the extract of cultivar Iapar-59 inoculated with P. syringae pv. garcae.

In Peru, Caulerpa filiformis is a marine algae listed as an invasive species. For years, its distribution has been considered to be in the north coast (Isla Lobos de Afuera and Piura) until a recent report of its distribution in the central coast (Ancash, Lima, and Ica). The present investigation aims to determine the main groups of secondary metabolites, total phenol content, and antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract of C. filiformis from Sechura Bay (Piura) and Paracas Bay (Ica). The main chemical groups were determined through phytochemical screening, the content of phenols by the Folin–Ciocalteu method, and antioxidant activity by the ABTS method (2,2-azinobis-[3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid]) and 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The phytochemical screening of the methanolic extract of C. filiformis from Sechura Bay and Paracas Bay revealed the presence of carbohydrates, polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, lipids, alkaloids, steroids, and triterpenes for both extracts. The total phenol content of the extract of C. filiformis from Sechura Bay (39.31 ± 0.39 mg of AGE/g extract) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that from Paracas Bay (18.78 ± 0.31 mg of AGE/g extract). In the ABTS and DPPH assays, the antioxidant capacity of the Sechura C. filiformis extract (IC50 = 3.49 ± 0.01 and 2.18 ± 0.02 mg/mL) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of the Paracas C. filiformis extract (IC50 = 6.41 ± 0.02 and 2.42 ± 0.04 mg /mL). These findings suggest that the methanolic extract of C. filiformis is a source of secondary metabolites with an antioxidant potential.

The Indonesian forest is one of the most species-rich ecosystems in the world. Within such forests are plant species with secondary metabolites that have novel molecular structure and diverse biological activity with excellent potential to be used medicinally in prevention and cure of various diseases afflicting humans. Plant materials often contain various forms of antioxidants. Phenolic compounds found in plants have many biological effects. Flavonoids and other phenolics play a protective role against metabolic damage caused by disease and environmental stressors. The communities of Kutai Kartanegara in East Kalimantan Indonesia are representative of many traditional peoples who have evolved ways of treating human ailment and disease by use of specific plants sourced from their forests. The purpose of the research described in this paper was to identify significant medicinal plant species used by the Kutai ethnic community and to prepare extracts from these plants, mainly from the leaves, and to evaluate the extracts for bioactivity; namely by general identification of secondary metabolites, and by estimation of their antioxidant activity, toxicity, and antibacterial activity. Samples of ten plant species, used medicinally by the Kutai community, were extracted using ethanol solvent. Assay of antioxidant activity was carried out by the spectrophotometric method using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical) as the control. The degree of toxicity of the extracts was determined by the BSLT (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test) while anti-bacterial activity was evaluated using an in vitro assay of growth inhibition of cultures of the bacterium Escherichia coli. The result showed that nine of the plant species had strong antioxidant activity (IC50); extracts of two of the species were very toxic, while one other was toxic; and at least eight of the species had extracts that exhibited anti-bacterial activity. The phytochemical compounds identified in several of the ten species included flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, triterpenoids, and alkaloids.
