Education is the key to raising generations that are modern, democratic, productive, diligent, understanding, perceptive, critical and inquisitive. Teacher education is more important today than it has been in half a century. Thus, teachers are so significant to education and scholars argue that teacher quality is the most important within-school factor affecting student performance because great teachers help create great students. In fact, research shows that an inspiring and informed teacher is the most important school-related factor influencing student achievement, so it is critical to pay close attention to how we train and support both new and experienced educators (Edutopia, 2008). The Republic of Turkey has made great efforts to train teachers and meet the demand for teachers. Pedagogical teacher training is a part of this effort. This study will help determine the attitudes of teacher candidates towards the Pedagogical teacher training they receive, and in this regard the purpose of this study is to develop a measurement tool that can be utilized in future studies. The study showed that “The Attitude Scale towards Pedagogical Teacher Training (PFETO)” is a valid and reliable tool. PFETO is a valid and reliable data collection tool for future studies on attitudes towards Pedagogical Teacher Training.

Summary John Dewey has had significant influence on the education system of the Republic of Turkey, especially during the early periods of the Republic. He provided his recommendations, among others, on the training of teachers in Turkey in his Report and Recommendation upon Turkish Education and contributed to the development of teacher education system in Turkey. Although Turkey has a relatively long history of teacher education, the system has suffered from some fundamental issues for decades. In this regard, by focusing on the concepts of quality and diversity, this work examines the relevance of Dewey’s ideas as provided in his report and presented in his seminal book Democracy and Education to some historical problems of the system. It ultimately aims at providing a wider perspective on some contemporary problems of the teacher training system by framing an understanding of a competent teacher while focusing on the concepts of pluralistic democracy, multiculturalism, and multilingualism.

In this study, it was tried to determine the attitudes of teacher candidates towards the profession and to determine whether different variables were effective. 397 pre-service teachers selected through appropriate sampling were used in the study. In the study, Erkuş et al. (2000) developed and “Attitude Scale on Teaching” which is a one-dimensional measurement tool that is quadruple likert type scale was used. Analysis of the data; Descriptive methods, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests were used. Findings of the study: according to “Age”, “Status of doing sports”, “Class” and “Job Satisfaction Levels” showed a significant difference in total scores of “AST” (p <0.05). The average scores of the participants in AST show a generally positive attitude. Consequently, can be concluded that the attitudes of PE teacher candidates towards the profession differ according to some variables.Extended English summary is in the end of Full Text PDF (TURKISH) file.

The raising of the life standards of individuals living within a society is only possible through the provision of quality education. Quality education can be realized only through the training of teachers with the necessary skills and positive attitudes towards the training provided at faculties of education and through teacher training programs. The purpose of this study is to compare the attitudes of teacher candidates enrolled on teacher training programs towards this type of education with their views concerning this model of education within the context of numerous variables factors. The participants in this study, that was designed according to a descriptive model, consisted of an appropriate sample of 202 teacher candidates from the teacher training program program at a state university situated in Istanbul. The data of the research were collected using “an attitude scale with regard to teacher training” and “an identification scale of the level of support provided to become a teacher”. The data were analyzed using a Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, a Spearman Brown Rank Correlation Coefficient (test) and Binary Logistic Regression (method). A positive development was seen to have taken place in the attitudes of teacher trainees from the point prior to embarking on Teacher Training to completion of the training. Teacher candidates were of the view that teacher training contributed only slightly to the acquisition of skills relating to the learning and teaching process, however contributed greatly to development of the skills of being able to recognize diversity (among students) and in those related to class management. In accordance with the logistic regression model, it was realized that the above may represent predictor variables outside the model adopted.

Purpose:To examine the relationship between the South Carolina middle school physical education assessment results and the school characteristics. In addition, the relationship between teacher training attendance and student achievement were determined.Method:Student performance on four physical education indicators in 63 middle schools (and 116 teachers) were reported to the South Carolina Physical Education Assessment Program. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to determine the relationships between school characteristics as predictors of the performance indicator. ANOVAs were conducted to determine the relationship to teacher training and the performance indicators. Results:Statewide averages of student performance indicated that slightly over 50% of middle school students were rated as competent in all physical education indicators except health-related fitness (31.2%). The variability was high among all indicators. The correlations between the poverty index and the physical education indicators were significant and low. Teachers who attended data collection training sessions scored higher on all performance indicators, particularly health-related fitness knowledge. Teachers who attended professional development had significantly higher scores on motor skills, health-related fitness knowledge, and the overall weighted scores and approached significance on the health-related fitness performance.Discussion/Conclusion:This study suggests that teachers and the programs they deliver have a greater impact on student learning than do school characteristics. Teacher training and professional development is warranted. Most compelling is that the results of this study provide a strong argument against the practice of using student scores from other academic content areas to evaluate teacher effectiveness in physical education.

The Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923. In the first 20 years of its existence, the political leadership of the republic embarked on a process of nation building in Anatolia and at the same time changed the face of Turkish society, stamping on it a particular brand of secular modernity. This article tries to find out what were the common characteristics of the small band of men who made up the leadership of the republic and to what extent their shared background and experience can help explain the course they charted for Turkey after its creation. One of the conclusions is that Turkey, although located geographically for more than 90% in Asia, is in fact a creation of Europeans, who shaped the country after their own image.
