Six species of Magnolia L., growing in the Botanical Garden of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin which is located on the north-western outskirts of the city of Lublin, were studied during the period 2006-2008. The aim of this study was to determine the dynamics of leaf and flower development in these Magnolia species under the climatic and soil conditions of Lublin as well as to evaluate the size of their leaves and long shoots. The present study included the following species: M. acuminata L., M. kobus DC, M. liliiflora Desr., M. salicifolia Siebold et Zuch, M. x soulangiana Soul.- -Bod., and M. tripetala L. The magnolia trees were planted in 1968-1989 on grey-brown podzolic soil derived from loess. The study area is affected by the continental climate which is characterized by large annual amplitude of temperatures, long summers as well as long and cold winters. The long-term average annual air temperature for this region is 8.1oC, while the long-term average annual rainfall reaches 541.6 mm. The obtained results showed that, among the Magnolia species studied, M. salicifolia flowered earliest under the climatic and soil conditions of Lublin, while M. tripetala was the last to bloom. Full leaf development, on average for the study period, was recorded earliest in M. salicifolia and M. liliiflora, whereas it occurred latest in M. tripetala. The leaves of M. tripetala were characterized by the greatest length and width, while the smallest leaves were recorded in M. kobus. M. liliiflora was found to show the smallest annual shoot increments and the lowest number of leaves.

The article deals with one of the most relevant topics of the modern city and ecology - the problem of landscaping in Volgograd. The city is characterized by an industrial urbanism, with a high concentration of population, saturation of production facilities and vehicles, which contributes to a high level of negative impact on the environment. The pace of greening of the city lags behind the pace of construction of the residential sector, and the existing green spaces do not meet the sanitary and hygienic, aesthetic requirements. The prospects of this problem are determined, the existing green spaces are considered, data on the climatic conditions of the city and the ecological situation are given. Improvement in the field of landscaping is associated with the scientifically sound placement of green spaces, taking into account all the factors that affect the growth and development of plants in the urban environment. Unfortunately, due to the uneven distribution of the assortment of trees and shrubs, the species composition of the central streets and squares of the city is extremely poor. The study focuses on the role of the botanical garden in urban landscaping and aims to create recommendations for the sorting of tree and shrub plants for urban landscaping. As a result of the analysis of the assortment of ornamental plants of the open ground of the botanical garden, the article proposed species and varieties of woody and shrubby plants that have passed the introduction tests for more than 5-10 years. Recommendations for sorting are aimed at improving the ecological situation of the city and greening the recreation areas of citizens. The proposed list of tree and shrub species cannot fully solve the problem of greening the city, but it will help to significantly enrich the composition of tree and shrub plants.

The design of coatings must be adequate to protect pipelines under long-term, severe environmental conditions, including the extreme climatic conditions that will apply in the North before the pipe is installed and operation begins. Practices and standardised methodologies for evaluating and qualifying pipeline coatings for application in northern pipelines are discussed. Results from laboratory and field experiments, carried out under the conditions to which coatings will be exposed during construction, are presented. Based on 1-year laboratory experiments in which samples were exposed to temperatures as low as −45°C and limited data from the field experiments, it is concluded that Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards CSA Z662, CSA Z245.20 and CSA Z245.21 adequately cover evaluation of coatings for northern pipelines. However, in order to evaluate the effects of low-temperatures, the specimens should be exposed for at least 4 months. Coatings qualified by CSA Z245.21 (System B1 and B2) are less affected from exposure to low-temperatures than those qualified by CSA Z245.21 (System A1) and CSA Z245.20.

Lack of documentation on past harvest fluctuations limits the exploration of long-term trends in crop production and agricultural adaptation strategies. A long-term perspective is needed, however, to understand the wide spectrum of potential human responses to environment and climate change. Therefore, we used tree-ring density series as proxy data to reconstruct climate-mediated yield ratio (harvested grain in relation to sown) in central and northern Finland over the period ad 760–2000. The reconstruction explains 50% of the variance in recorded yield ratio variability over the calibration period (ad 1866–1921). The reconstruction illustrated several intervals of increased and reduced yield ratio over the past 13 centuries. The long-term development of the agricultural prerequisites is characterized by distinct intervals defined statistically as ad 760–1106 (highest yield ratios), 1107–1451, 1452–1694, 1695–1911 (lowest yield ratios) and 1912 onwards. The results provide insight into the establishment and development of crop cultivation in the agricultural margin. The reconstruction suggests that continuous crop cultivation was established in the study region during a favourable period of climatic conditions supporting high yields. Thereafter, the climate-mediated yield ratio declined in the long run until the turn of the 20th century. Periods of agricultural transformations, those previously demonstrated in pollen data and historical documents, followed the onsets of the low yield ratio phases indicated by our reconstruction. Thus, we suggest that ever since the establishment of crop cultivation, climate can be considered as an important factor contributing to the development of the agricultural history in the north.

Waste tire crumb rubber materials (CRM) were used to modify paving asphalts. The mixing time, hot-storage stability, Superpave grades, pumping and handling properties, phase separation tests, and repeated creep properties of the modified asphalts were studied using base asphalts of different hardness. Applying the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program and the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) model, optimal levels of CRM and suitable base asphalts were selected for the climatic conditions of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. High-temperature grade bumping protocol, regarding traffic volume and speed, was also considered. With joint efforts from the Tire Recycling Management Association of Alberta (TRMA), Husky Energy, and the City of Lethbridge, three test sections in different Lethbridge locations with various traffic volumes were paved from the years 2003 to 2005. So far, the City of Lethbridge is pleased with the initial performance of the test sections.Key words: waste tire, crumb rubber materials (CRM), paving asphalt, recycled, modification, Superpave, repeated creep, field test.

A retrospective analysis and assessment of long-term changes in the annual and seasonal runoff of the Oka River basin over a long 131-year observation period (1881 / 1882–2011/2012) was performed. The changes in the annual distribution of the Oka river runoff over the seasons of the year (spring flood, summer-autumn and winter low water) from its annual value for the selected time periods (before and after 1976/1977) are considered. It has been noted that over the past decades, river runoff has been formed in new climatic conditions associated with global changes and, as a result, regional climate. The assessment of possible changes in the annual and seasonal runoff of the Oka River basin (to the final alignment – the city of Kaluga, with a basin area of 54,900 km2 ) in the first half of the 21st century is carried out. In assessing changes in the river flow of the Oka basin for the future period, the method of trends (trends) is used, based on the identification of cycles in fluctuations in hydrological characteristics and unidirectional trends (trends) inherent in individual phases (ups and downs) of these cycles, as well as to the establishment of functional (correlation) relationships between environmental factors (climatic, anthropogenic) and the nature of the response (river flow). In this case, the trend model serves as an alternative to the homogeneity hypothesis of long-term fluctuations in river flow. The change in the future values of the river flow of the Oka basin was estimated using averaged data of 30-year periods of time characterized by relative stationarity of climatic and hydrological conditions. The dynamics of the average 30-year values of the annual runoff in the upper reaches of the Oka River (the closure target is the city of Kaluga for the period 1881/1882–2011/2012) is considered. Possible forecasted mean annual values of the annual flow of the Oka River for the first half of the 21st century are obtained

The main task of the expeditions was the search for the following species of natural Siberian flora and theintroduction of live plants and seeds to the Botanical Garden named after acad. A. V. Fomin: Cotoneaster mongolicus.C. neo-popvii, C. tjulinae, which are currently presented in our collection. In addition, long-term phenological observations in the conditions of the north-west of Ukraine allowed to isolate new species from the imported material: C. kyachticus.C. logginovii. They are described in the materials of the XIV and XVII conferences “Problems of botany of Southern Siberiaand Mongolia”. A trip to the lake Zun-Torei was dedicated to the search for C. mongolicus. As it turned out later, under theC. mongolicus mother’s plant, we dug up a plant different from the mother’s plant, to which we gave the name C. logginovii. This article provides materials to identify the parents pair in the formation of this hybrid pitchfork. For this purpose, materials of herbarium collections from the vicinity of the lake were used Zun-Torei experienced local botanists, as wellas personal fees. Comparison of the samples allowed to establish their identity with C. mongolicus, as well as to certify it asone of the parents of C. logginovii. Morphological descriptions of annual shoots leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds of three typesof Cotoneasters: C. megalocarpus, C. mongolicus, C. yakuticus; micrographs of endocarp of bones of the previous speciesand C. logginovii, C. melanocarpus, C. uniflorus are given. The herbarium samples of C. mongolicus collected in the areaof the lake Zun-Torey were analyzed. The material is illustrated with photographs of plants introduced in the north-westof Ukraine (Kiev). The introduction of plants by the method of genus complexes by F. N. Rusanov allowed to create theCotoneaster collection, which includes 200 taxa of the genus. In the Botanical Garden named after acad. A .V. Fomin fromthe flora of Siberia preserved 11 species of Cotoneaster: C. commixtus, C. kyachticus. C laxiflorus. C. logginovii, C. lucidus,C. neo-popovii, C. megalocarpus, C. mongolicus, C. tjulinae, C. uniflorus, C. yakuticus.

A brief description of three North-American species of rowan trees from the collection of the South-Ural Botanical Garden-Institute of Ufa Federal Research Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences (UFRC RAS): Sorbus decora, Sorbus americana and Sorbus scopulina is given. The climatic conditions of introduction area are similar in temperature to the parameters of the natural range of the North American S. decora: they are not optimal for it, but the plants bloom and give viable seeds. It can be assumed that vital signs of S. decora would be higher in milder climate and favorable water-physical soil conditions. According to the analysis of variance, it is revealed that the conditions of the year and species characteristics significantly affect all the phenological phases of development of North American rowan trees. At the same time, they are more dependent on the temperature conditions of the year (F=17.4 at p<0.001) and less on species characteristics (F=6.2, at p<0.001), although the sequence of phenophases is maintained from year to year. The average vegetation period of rowan trees is 154–163 days. S. decora growing in the Botanical Garden for a long time (planted in 1960–1974) and relatively new species for the collection – S. mericana and S. scopulina (2009–2013) can be considered promising decorative crops for growing in the climatic conditions of Ufa and the Bashkir Urals

This study used annual rainfall records from three stations within the North East Arid Zone of Nigeria for the period (1957-2017) to measure the extent of the rainfall recovery by comparing the drought decades and post drought decades rainfall patterns. Monthly rainfall records from Potiskum, Maiduguri and Nguru Stations were used. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were employed in analysing the data. The findings of the study revealed a significant year-to-year variability in rainfall characteristics around 61 years (1957-2017) averages. The variability was large in 1970s up till 1990s, and lower in 1960s and from 2000 to 2018. Decreasing trend in annual rainfall amount was observed during the study period while a stability in onset and cessation dates were observed. The differences between 1957-1986 and 1987-2017 climatic season were found to be statistically insignificant. The study concluded that the reported rainfall recovery from drought is statistically insignificant and the observed long term mean trend revealed a decreasing trend. Therefore, the theory of Sahel rainfall recovery can be better termed as a ‘’break of the series of drought or decline in frequency and magnitude of occurrence of drought’’ The research recommended the continuations with the drought adaptation and mitigation strategies adopted by local population, decisions makers and organizations following the series Sahelian droughts of 1970s and 1980s.
