Relationship between vitamin C and nitrate content in potato tubers depending on the maturity groups of cultivars

To achieve clean and high-quality spinach production, the effects of daily light integral (DLI) and light spectrum on growth, nutritional quality, and energy yield of hydroponic spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) were investigated in a closed plant factory under light-emitting diode (LED) lighting. The hydroponic spinach plants were grown under 16 combinations of four levels of DLI (11.5, 14.4, 17.3, and 20.2 mol m−2 day−1) with four light spectra: LED lamps with ratio of red light to blue light (R:B ratio) of 0.9, 1.2, and 2.2 and fluorescent lamps with R:B ratio of 1.8 as control. The results show that total fresh and dry weights, energy yield, and light energy use efficiency (LUE) of harvested spinach were higher under D17.3-L1.2 treatment compared to other treatments. The higher net photosynthetic rates were shown at DLI of 17.3 mol m−2 day−1 regardless of light quality. Higher vitamin C contents of spinach in all LED treatments were obtained compared with the control. L1.2 treatments with higher fraction of blue light led to more vitamin C content, lower nitrate content, and higher LUE independent of DLI. L2.2 treatment with more fraction of red light was beneficial to reduce oxalate accumulation. Power consumption based on increased total fresh weight under LED lamps with R:B ratio of 1.2 in different DLIs was over 38% lower than that under the fluorescent lamps and 1.73 kWh per 100 g FW at DLI of 17.3 mol m−2 day−1. In conclusion, lighting environment in DLI of 17.3 mol m−2 day−1 using LED lamps with R:B ratio of 1.2 is suggested for the design of a LED plant factory for hydroponic spinach production.

An organic agricultural system based on natural methods and means of production is an alternative to intensive agriculture. The available research suggests that organic crops, in comparison to the conventional ones, are richer in phenolics and other antioxidants while containing less undesirable pesticide residues and nitrates. The aim of this study was to determine concentrations of polyphenols, lutein, vitamin C, and nitrates in eight potato cultivars (Mazur, Justa, Lawenda, Lech, Tacja, Laskana, Otolia, Magnolia) grown organically and conventionally in a controlled field experiment in Poland. Significant differences between potato tubers of the tested cultivars coming from organic and conventional production were identified for the majority of parameters. Higher concentrations of nitrates and lutein were found in conventional compared to the organic tubers, while organic potatoes were, on average, richer in phenolic compounds. Among the tested cultivars, Magnolia, Otolia, and Laskara were richest in vitamin C and phenolics. Otolia and Laskara also accumulated the highest levels of nitrates. If further confirmed, these observations might be of importance for the producers and consumers, who increasingly search for foods from sustainable and well-controlled agricultural systems.

In 2017-2019 the relative agro-biological effect of equal doses of mineral fertilizers, half rotten manure, granulated guano, organomix and that of the bacterial (Azoto + Phosphate Barvar) concentrates on the plants’ yield capacity and vegetative mass, as well as on the content of nitrates, total sugar, vitamin C and dry matters in the ripe fruits was investigated during the tomato and pepper field experiments in conditions of the Ararat valley. The highest effect has been observed in the mineral fertilizers (N150P80K150 and N150P80 kg/ha), half rotten manure (30 t/ha) and granulated guano (5 t/ha), while the lowest indicators have been recorded in the variants of organomix and bacterial concentrates after the control one. Within the three-year experiments the nitrate content in the mature fruits of the tomato variety “Lia” excessed the MPC value (150 mg/kg for the open ground), which seems to be a varietal characteristics.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is a new crop for soil and climatic conditions of Ukraine, the active implementation of which is hindered by the lack of recommendations on technological aspects of cultivation. One of the important technological measures for growing sweet potatoes is the use of soil mulching, which improves the water regime and regulates the thermal regime of the soil; prevention of weed growth and growth of sweet potato shoots to the soil. Thus, the aim of the research is to determine the efficiency of growing sweet potatoes in the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine by different methods of soil mulching. Field research was carried out on typical low-humus light loamy chernozem on loess loam. It was noted, that when growing sweet potatoes on ridges, the introduction of mulching the soil with black polyethylene film provides more active growth of the vegetative mass throughout the growing season (5.33 shoots/plant with a total length of 252.1 cm), while growing without ridges has a positive effect on plants growth due to the general absence of mulch (2.53 shoots/plant with a total length of 107.8 cm). The use of ridges and mulching the soil with black polyethylene film causes the yield of sweet potato tubers at 34.8 t/ha, while the mulching of the soil with straw, the yield was 18.3–21.9 t/ha, without mulching – 13.0–17, 1 t/ha. Mulching with black polyethylene film ensures the accumulation of vitamin C and starch in sweet potato tubers. When growing the culture on ridges by this method of mulching, the maximum level of vitamin C according to the experiment (4.78 mg/100 g) and starch (11.73 %) was noted. The introduction of mulching and ridge formation involves additional material and labor costs, but helps to reduce weed control and tuber digging costs. When growing sweet potatoes on ridges with mulching with black polyethylene film, the minimum additional labor costs for the formation of a unit of yield (1.95 man-minutes/kg of tubers) were noted, while without mulching and without ridges this figure was 6.76 man-minute/kg

This study was conducted in styrofoam trays placed on an aerated nutrient solution in vats in order to determine the effect of different nutrient solutions on rocket plant growth, yield and quality. Seeds of Bengi F1 rocket cultivar were sown into peat as inserting each seed to each hole (17 ccs) of trays with 210 cells (957 plant m-2). Following germination in the germination chamber, seedling trays were moved to a climate controlled greenhouse for adaptation. After emergence, the seedlings were transferred to water culture. The nutrient solution was applied as “full dose” (mg/L: N 150, P 50, K 150, Ca 150, Mg 50, Fe 5.0, Mn 0.50, Zn 0.05, B 0.50, Cu 0.03, Mo 0.02), “half dose” (macro elements reduced by 50%) and “without nutrients” (water). Cultivation was performed in 2 consecutive periods and in each period 3 harvests were done and quality analysis was done on the leaves from the first harvest. Results were given as the mean of two periods. Results showed that plant growth, yield and quality parameters vary depending on the concentration of the nutrient solution. It was observed that as the concentration of nutrient solution decreased, plant growth, biomass, yield values decreased, leaf color and total chlorophyll concentration did not change and while nitrate content decreased, vitamin C content increased. Leaf N, P, K and Fe element contents decreased with half dose, whereas Ca and Mg content did not change. However, there was no statistical difference between full dose and half dose treatments in many measured parameters. When all the data obtained from the study are evaluated together; it is suggested that rocket can be grown in a floating water culture and the dose of macro elements as reduced 50% can be preferred because it reduces the nitrate content, increases the vitamin C content and allows the use of less fertilizers without causing any significant reduction in yield compared with full dose.

This paper discussesthe results findings on the effect of nitrogen fertilizers as urea-ammonia liquor (KAS-32) and ammonium nitrate of various application rates (40,80 and 120 kg of primary nutrient per ha) on the quality of tomato fruits grown on the field and under cover.Various research methods were tested. They made it possible to identify biologically active substances of tomato fruits which helped to examine fruit chemical composition of experimental vari-eties with the determination of dry solids, total sugar, vita-minC, total acidity, lycopene and nitrates. It was found that under cover, the application of nitrogen-containing fertiliz-ers increased dry solids by an average of 23-25%, total sugar -by 55-61%, vitamin C -by 33-41% as compared to the control. On the field, the dry solids content increased by 35-45%, total sugar -by 74-83% and vitamin C -by 37-42%. However, the application of the maximum rates of N120fertilizer decreased dry solids content by 5-6% as compared to N80. At the same time, there was an increase of fruit total acidity as compared to the control: up to 32% under cover, and up to 16% on the field. Although as sugar content increased, the acidity had almost no effect on the eating qualities. In all variants, the nitrate content did not exceed themaximum permissible concentration. The ob-tained data confirmed the positive effect of certain rates of nitrogen-containing fertilizers on the structure, quality and safety of the obtained tomatoes. This result will make it possible to recommend the testedmethods and rates of fertilization during the growing season.

The changes of vitamin C content in relation to Cd, Pb and Zn accumulation in 6 potatoes varieties: very early (Junior, Impala), early (Livera), middle early (Agria), medium-late (Asterix, Desirée) were surveyed in this work. The soil used in pot trial had pseudototal (in soil extract of <I>aqua regia</i) contents of Cd 0.54–0.9, Pb 14.0–107.2, Zn 47.9–55.8 mg/kg. Experiment was conducted in 4 variants: A – control, B–D with the gradual treatment of Cd, Pb, and Zn in form on their salts solutions. The metals content in potatoes was assessed by AAS, vitamin C by HPLC method. The accumulation Cd, Pb, Zn varied in dependence on variety, the highest one was in varieties Junior, Impala; the lowest one in Asterix, Desirée. The vitamin C content (mg/kg f.m.) was highest after Cd treatment in all varieties in variant D: 491.46 (Junior) – 566.27 (Asterix); after Pb in variant B: Impala (101.51) – Desirée (157.31), after Zn in variant C: Impala (78.80) – Desirée (143.41).

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of region, variety, year and ecological and conventional way of cultivation on the content of total protein and nitrates in potato tubers in three-year field trials. The effects of selected factors on nitrate and protein contents were similar, more significant for nitrates. Growing regions, varieties and years of cultivation caused statistically significant effects whereas the effect of ecological way of cultivation was less pronounced and showed a tendency without significance. Higher region showed lesser average nitrate (113.4 mg/kg) and protein content (4.27% dry matter) in comparison with lower region (143.7 mg/kg and 4.72% dry matter). The highest nitrate content was found in Impala and Karin varieties (199.2 and 167.6 mg/kg); Karin variety was also rich in total proteins (4.86% dry matter). Ecological way of cultivation showed no significant difference on nitrate content (136.9&nbsp;mg/kg) and protein content (4.41%) as compared with conventional way of cultivation (153.9 mg/kg, 4.32%).

The efficacy of using the calculated doses of fertilizers for upcoming harvests potatoes was studied. As a result of studies of the potato leaf area formation dynamics on gray forest soils of the Middle Volga steppe, its dependence on mineral nutrition level was revealed. Their impact on productivity and quality of potato tubers was identified. The efficacy of calculated doses of fertilizers for upcoming potato harvests were studied. Fertilizing crops by scheduled doses, counted by cash- balance method for upcoming yields of 25-40 tons per hectare, provided the formation of 90,5-98,0% of the target yield. The nitrate content in all versions of the experiment was below the maximum admissible concentration. However, with increasing fertilizers amount, their content was increased in 1,24-1,73 times (without fertilizers - 41 mg / kg of wet weight). As a result of studies of the dynamics of potato leaf area formation on gray forest soils of the Middle Volga steppe, we revealed its dependence on mineral nutrition level. The photosynthetic potential (PP) during the growing season of potato Udacha, was in the first version without fertilizers 2.173, the second 2.520, in the third 2.910, fourth 3.196 and fifth 3.575 million square meter per hectare * days, i.e. with an increase in fertilization rates, the photosynthetic potential increased accordingly to 0.347-1.402 million units, for every thousand units of photosynthetic potential we obtained from 7.2 to 10.8 kg potato tubers. A starch content varied from a few of fertilizers. The maximum starch content (14 %) was obtained in the second way, calculated on the tuber yield of 25 tons per hectare. A further increase in the background was led to some of its decline.
