Sports play a functional role in human development. Regular sport participation has beneficial effects on physical, psychological and social wellbeing. It has positive effects on prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases, physical appearance, enhance self-concept and external prestige, lower rates of suicidal ideation, reduce use of fossil fuels, and substantially increase life expectancy. The advent and excessive use of technology, academic workload coupled with the incidence of COVID-19, students become content with engaging more in sedentary activities. This chapter examined the psychological factors predicting sport participation among Japanese and foreign students in Sendai, Japan. The common choice of recreational sports are sedentary activities with a high level of performance in terms of frequency, intensity, duration and long period of participation. Psychological factors of self-confidence, value, task familiarity, perceived success significantly predicts sport participation among university students. Therefore, there is need for increased awareness on benefit of sport participation within the university. Improved reconciliation between academic and physical education programs, and development of attractive recreational sports considering the psychological process that leads to participation. To allay concerns during pandemic, self-organized, non-contact and outdoor sports should be encouraged with adequate preventive measures in place.

The purpose of the paper is to summarize and present teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language in higher educational institutions of Ukraine. The main focus lies in the most modern methods of teaching Ukrainian for foreign students of different nationalities who attain higher education in Ukraine. The author reviewed the development of the concepts of emotional intelligence and modern approaches to the determination of the nature and forms of manifestation of empathy in individuals. Empathy is a principal social emotion; in its most general form it is defined as the individual's ability to react emotionally and to respond to other people's experiences. The author emphasizes the feasibility of accounting empathy as part of emotional intelligence, which is key to successful study of the Ukrainian language for foreigners. The value of socio-psychological training as a means to enhance students’ empathy is proven. Emotional intelligence techniques for the formation and development of empathy culture are presented. The formation of students’ emphatically culture promotes social and psychological training, thus enhancing competence in the field of communication and interpersonal skills to acquire. Socio-psychological training covers various methods, such as business and role-playing, discussions and more. It involves the acquisition of psychological and pedagogical knowledge in communication, effective communication skills, for example, to get in touch, listen, persuade others and to form attitudes necessary for successful communication, such as readiness to consider the problem from another point of view; development of abilities of self-examination, to understand other students, and correction system of relations with the outside world. Other techniques appropriate to apply during the stimulation of student culture are widely known such as self-disclosure, emotional response, personal contact (physical, visual, verbal, plastic, object-efficient) jokes, humor and others. The latter are very effective in removing emotional stress, eliminating aggressive or sad states of stress in relationships, and help enhance mental activity. Jokes activate distraction and relax empathy. The development of emotional intelligence in the student regulates that individual’s abilities and traits that are responsible whether the impact of emotional phenomena will be constructive or destructive behavior for the student. Developing emotional intelligence is inextricably linked to the communicative approach to language learning. The teacher should provide comfortable and effective communication between students in class, using the methods above, techniques and creating a positive atmosphere that promotes cooperation and helps develop confidence in students. Holistic education must involve the unity of intellectual and emotional areas. Also, this work is devoted to the analysis of existing classifications of dialogues, consideration of advantages and disadvantages of some of their types, to the coverage of methods of extracurricular work with students, their detailed analysis, and identification of their pluses and minuses. The model of the use of more appropriate combinations of types of dialogues is presented in order to achieve the most productive result in language learning. A model of formation of foreign communicative competence is offered. The practice of the proposed methods should allow students to unleash their potential, break language barriers, expand vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and most importantly – increase self-confidence.

AbstractObjectivePublic health messages to reduce Hg exposure for pregnant women have focused exclusively on advice on fish consumption to limit Hg exposure, with little account being taken of the positive contribution of fish to nutritional quality. The aim of the present review was to compare and contrast the content and presentation of national guidelines on fish consumption in pregnancy, and comment on their evidence base and impact on consumption.DesignWe searched for national and international guidelines on fish consumption in pregnancy using Internet search strategies. The detailed content and style of presentation of the guidelines were compared. The evidence base for the guidelines, and evidence for the impact of the guidelines on fish consumption levels, were assessed.ResultsWe identified nineteen national guidelines and three international guidelines. There was great variation in the content, complexity and presentation style. The guidelines were based largely on the Hg content of fish with far less consideration being given to the positive beneficial effects of nutrients provided by fish. The complexity of the guidelines may lead to pregnant women reducing their fish intake, or not eating fish at all.ConclusionsGuidelines on fish consumption in pregnancy should take the beneficial effects of fish into account. Guidelines need to be clear and memorable, and appropriately disseminated, to achieve impact. Guidelines could include visual rather than narrative content. Use of technology, for example apps, could enable women to record their fish consumption in real time and log compliance with guidance over a week or other time period.

In today's higher education environment, online education has become a rich and nuanced medium characterized by a dynamic and progressive use of technology. These technological advancements require research-informed guidelines and practices to facilitate understanding of how they can be used to foster positive outcomes in distance education contexts. By employing a mixed-methods multiphase design case study at Avondale College of Higher Education, the authors examine the challenges, self-confidence and threshold concepts, or transformative, conceptual understandings that academic faculty staff experience while engaging in distance education course design. The authors examine how these threshold concepts, attitudes and skills can be used to inform the design of professional development programs for academic staff who teach in online contexts. The results and associated recommendations of the six-year investigation are presented to inform professional development programs that aim to improve the quality of online teaching, course design and learning experiences of students.

This paper discusses a use of technology in which the student controls the computer (e.g., computer programming) instead of it controlling the student (e.g., drill-and-practice). A description of the nature of this mode of computer use is provided, and some examples are given. A rationale for learner control is discussed in terms of cognitive and affective outcomes of computing. The cognitive outcomes include relatively specific learning and thinking skills and more general systematic methods of problem solving. Affective outcomes include self-confidence, curiosity and exploratory behaviors, and motivation.

The problem raised in the study is also due to the lack of a common conceptual framework explaining the conditionality of foreign students’ realization by subjective characteristics. The purpose of the paper is to present and analyze the results of an empirical study of self-attitude indicators as subject predictors of students’ self-realization in a foreign cultural environment. The study was conducted in 2019-20 among students of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia getting undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Humanities. 412 respondents aged 18-25 took part in the survey. The authors used “Multidimensional questionnaire of self-identity” method by S. I. Kudinov; “Test - questionnaire of self-attitude” method by V. V. Stolin, S. R. Panteleev; the self-assessment diagnostic technique by Dembo-Rubinstein in A. M. Prikhozhan’s modification; “Individual preferences of self-expression sphere” questionnaire by S. S. Kudinov; methods of mathematical and statistical analysis (descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, K. Pearson’s correlation analysis, factor analysis, the program of standard statistical package “Statistica-7.0”. In the course of an empirical study of students in a multinational university it was found that the respondents’ self-realization is carried out mainly in the course of educational activities. As a result of cluster analysis, three groups of respondents with dominant indicators of self-attitude have been identified, which were conventionally designated as positive-stable, negative-rigid and socially dependent type of self-attitude. It is determined that respondents with a positive-stable type of self-attitude demonstrate most successful self-fulfillment due to the expression of such personal qualities as self-acceptance, self-confidence, faith in their possibilities and abilities, self-management. At the same time, the greatest difficulties in self-realization are experienced by students with a socially dependent type of self-attitude, due to low self-esteem, external self-regulation and constant expectation that others would evaluate their activities, actions and reactions.

Nowadays, our world is experiencing a technological revolution and witnessing an explosion in the field of information and communication. The use of technology in English education is one of the developments associated with this contemporary scientific and technological advance. This paper discusses some issues which Saudi English teachers encounter in using technology in teaching English subjects at intermediate schools in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Taking a qualitative approach, the researcher focuses on the status of using technology in two intermediate schools. A discrepancy is found between intention and practice. During investigations and observations throughout the district, the researcher could not find a language laboratory in government intermediate schools. In this paper, the researcher will discuss three issues respectively as follows: teacher resistance, lack of training and self-confidence, and financial obstacles.

La relación entre diversos factores psicológicos y la práctica de escalada ha quedado demostrada desde hace tiempo, sin embargo, la mayoría de los trabajos realizados se limitan a situaciones muy artificiales y alejadas de la naturaleza. Muy pocos son los estudios que han llevado a cabo este tipo de investigaciones en el medio natural y han combinado la recogida de datos con una práctica real de escalada. Los instrumentos utilizados para la recogida de datos han sido dos cuestionarios: el CSAI-2 y uno específicamente diseñado para recoger la información deseada sobre características sociodemográficas y hábitos deportivos. En nuestro trabajo hemos analizado diversas características de los participantes (perfiles sociodemográfico, deportivo general y deportivo como practicante de actividades físicas en el medio natural) y hemos comprobado cómo se relacionan entre ellas y su correlación con diferentes factores psicológicos (ansiedad cognitiva, ansiedad somática y autoconfianza). A través de éste artículo se evidencia como hay un porcentaje mayor de participantes mujeres que de hombres que escalan IV y V grado, mientras que en grados superiores los porcentajes se igualan. En lo referente a aspectos psicológicos, podemos apreciar como aquellos sujetos que escalan grados de mayor dificultad y que tienen un mayor interés por la práctica de la escalada, experimentan por un lado menores niveles de ansiedad somática y cognitiva y por otro, mayores niveles de autoconfianza.Palabras clave: Escalada deportiva, ansiedad cognitiva, ansiedad somática y autoconfianza.Abstract: The relationships among several psychological factors in rock climbing was proved a long time ago, nevertheless, most researches are limited to very artificial situations, far away from nature. There are few studies which have carried out this kind of investigation in the natural environment and have combined data collection with real rock climbing practice. The instruments used for this data collection were two questionnaires: CSAI-2 and another one specifically designed to gather the necessary information about sociodemographic characteristic and sport habits. In our work we have studied various individuals’ features (sociodemographic, general sport and outdoor profiles) and we have confirmed how they are interrelated and their influence on several psychological factors (cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence). Through this article we show that there are higher percentages of women than men participants who climb IV-V grade, whereas in higher grades the percentages equalize. Regarding psychological factors, we can notice how on the one hand those participants who climb higher grades and are more interested in rock climbing, feel lower cognitive anxiety and somatic anxiety, while on the other hand they feel higher self-confidence levels.Key words: Rock climbing, cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence.

Purpose of the article is to identify the most important psychological factors influencing success among long-distance runners. Material and methods. The application of an electronic diagnostic survey (interview) was used as the research method in the study. The normalized questionnaire was applied as a research technique in the paper. Results.The analysis of the results was divided into parts, the first two of which concern the characteristics and environment of the respondents, and the remaining ones refer to the research problems formulated in the methodology section. The most numerous group of women have physical and mental trainings (32%) and the majority of men trains neither physically nor mentally (28%). Conclusions. There are many key factors in long-distance running. However, the most important ones seem to be stubbornness, motivation, self-confidence, optimism as well as support from family and peers. Runners are considered to be people who are often physically and mentally resistant. They are often able to sacrifice a lot to achieve their goals. The path taken by long-distance runners is often incomprehensible to their surroundings that is family, peers or employers.

This study examines socio-psychological factors as determinants to information-seeking behaviour of LIS undergraduates in Kwara state. A descriptive survey method was adopted. A questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The total population for the study is 2392. From which the sample size of 333 was selected using Raosoft size calculator. The study revealed that most of LIS undergraduate have fear during information searching process. The study also revealed that LIS undergraduates are of opinions that having access to the internet improves their ability to search for information. It was also found out that most of LIS undergraduates were helped with internet to have access to various sources of information simultaneously. In conclusion, there is a significant relationship between computer/internet and information-seeking behaviour of LIS undergraduates in Kwara state. This research recommends that LIS undergraduate should improve confidence in the use of internet/computer to seek information with ease and LIS undergraduate should develop a mechanism for self-confidence while seeking for information
