In the first part of this joint paper on book divisions and their ideologies in the Gesta Danorum of Saxo Grammaticus (ca. 1200), Ivan Boserup points out that the edition of Saxo published by Karsten Friis-Jensen in 2005 is the first since the discovery of the Angers fragment in 1879, which is not in any way dominated by the endeavor to use the Angers fragment as a stepping stone for radical textual criticism of the Paris 1514 edition, i.e. the Editio princeps which is our main textual source to Saxo’s work. In contrast to the 1931 edition of Jørgen Olrik and Hans Ræder, and to scholars that have postulated that the Paris edition of 1514 was more or less rewritten throughout by a medieval or renaissance editor, Friis-Jensen has defended the text of the Paris edition by showing that it coincides basically with all medieval fragments (except the Angers fragment) and with medieval quotations and paraphrases. Although agreeing with Friis-Jensen’s approach, Boserup argues that Friis-Jensen has been misled to believe that the Compendium Saxonis stems from this ‘medieval Saxo-vulgate’ rather than from the manuscript of which the Angers fragment is a part, as argued in 1920 by Emil Rathsack.According to Boserup, the recognition of the Paris 1514 edition as Saxo’s last and final version of his work invites to a reconsideration of the alternative book division found in the Compendium Saxonis and, supposedly, in its archetype, the ‘Angers manuscript’.In the second part of the paper, Thomas Riis re-visits the book divisions which he previously treated in his dissertation in 1977. Combining a close textual analysis with evidence from seals, coins, imagery, and the arengae of charters, Riis suggests that the ‘original’ book division found in the Compendium Saxonis manuscripts reflects an “aggressive” royal ideology orchestrated by archbishop Absalon in the second half of the twelfth century. In contrast, the book division of the ‘medieval Saxo-vulgate’ represented mainly by the Paris 1514 edition can be interpreted as the result of the impact on Saxo of the ecclesiastically focused ideology of Absalon’s successor as Archbishop of Lund, the renowned theologian Anders Sunesen (Andreas Sunonis).

This article examines the interpretive techniques of the twelfth-century homilist and theologian, Kirill of Turov, in the context of the medieval exegetic tradition. I trace the development of an important theme, the revelation and transmission of the divine Logos to humanity, largely neglected by previous scholarship, in several of Kirill’s texts and pinpoint the seminal connection between this underlying theme and the author’s peculiar “desymbolizing” style, characterized by consistent use of disclosed metaphors and motivated, I argue, by Kirill’s intention to create the mode of narration most adequate to the central theme of revelation. On the basis of close textual analysis of Kirill’s Palm Sunday Sermon (“Slovo na Verbnitsu”), I challenge the traditional assessment of the author’s work as non-exegetic in function.

This chapter considers to what extent Henry Wheaton’s Elements of International Law was accurately translated into Chinese by WAP Martin in the 1860s. By conducting close textual analysis of selected translated words or phrases and exploring the impact of traditional Chinese culture and Chinese ways of thinking on the first ever attempt of translating a complete piece of Western international law literature into the Chinese language, we uncover the incommensurability of the Western and Chinese ideas of international order and a potential alternative or challenge to the traditional Western perception of international law. Our analysis may also shed some light on the Chinese understanding of international order in the twenty-first century.

Abstract: The drafts of the novel The year of the death of Ricardo Reis (1984), by the Portuguese writer José Saramago (1922-2010), offer a good opportunity to study the author’s creative method in the light of Textual and Genetic Criticism. By gathering, organizing and interpreting the editing marks left on the paper by the writer – additions, suppressions, substitutions, inversions of words and statements, and others, – it is possible to approach the editorial process that gave rise to the work. From a critical and genetic perspective, the comparison between the original texts and the final version in the first edition (editio princeps) helps to define the criteria that guided the interventions of the author, showing that not all changes in the original document were accepted in the printed version. Keywords: genetic criticism; philology; textual criticism; Portuguese literature; José Saramago.

(1) Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) penetrates respiratory epithelium through angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 binding, raising concerns about the potentially harmful effects of renin–angiotensin system inhibitors (RASi) on Human Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) evolution. This study aimed to provide insight into the impact of RASi on SARS-CoV-2 outcomes in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. (2) Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of hospitalized adult patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to a university hospital in France. The observation period ended at hospital discharge. (3) Results: During the study period, 943 COVID-19 patients were admitted to our institution, of whom 772 were included in this analysis. Among them, 431 (55.8%) had previously known hypertension. The median age was 68 (56–79) years. Overall, 220 (28.5%) patients were placed under mechanical ventilation and 173 (22.4%) died. According to previous exposure to RASi, we defined two groups, namely, “RASi” (n = 282) and “RASi-free” (n = 490). Severe pneumonia (defined as leading to death and/or requiring intubation, high-flow nasal oxygen, noninvasive ventilation, and/or oxygen flow at a rate of ≥5 L/min) and death occurred more frequently in RASi-treated patients (64% versus 53% and 29% versus 19%, respectively). However, in a propensity score-matched cohort derived from the overall population, neither death (hazard ratio (HR) 0.93 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.57–1.50), p = 0.76) nor severe pneumonia (HR 1.03 (95%CI 0.73–1.44), p = 0.85) were associated with RASi therapy. (4) Conclusion: Our study showed no correlation between previous RASi treatment and death or severe COVID-19 pneumonia after adjustment for confounders.

AbstractThis paper offers a novel interpretation of the nature and role of logical (logikôs) argumentation in Aristotle’s natural philosophy. In contrast to the standard domain interpretation, which makes logikôs argumentation the contrary of phusikôs, relying on principles drawn from outside the domain of natural science, I propose that the essential or defining feature of logikôs argumentation is the use of principles that are general relative to the question under investigation. My interpretation is developed and illustrated with a close textual analysis of Aristotle’s explanation of mule sterility in Generation of Animals II 8.

Purpose In the past decade, the development of the global economy, the change in organizational structures and the maturing of new technologies have led to considerable changes in business structures. Emergency situations, such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, have led many companies to declare bankruptcy. In this context, the present study aims to analyze strategic opinions of company executives in a declaration of bankruptcy. Design/methodology/approach To this end, an innovative approach is applied to strategic management and business. First, the authors conducted 14 interviews with executives, and the interview data were transcribed. Second, using textual analysis and data mining techniques, the transcripts were analyzed to understand the importance of indicators identified as relevant in companies in a declaration of bankruptcy. Findings This resulted in identification of 10 relevant indicators perceived by executives to avoid or anticipate a state of bankruptcy, including innovation, business adaptability, room for improvement in production processes, time to react to situations of alarm, layoffs, support from public institutions, suppliers, international and national regulations, impact on the industry, credits and debts. Originality/value The paper concludes with a discussion of important theoretical and practical implications of these findings for the industry. Also, strategic management decision-making strategies are presented as a result of the innovative textual analysis approach used.

This paper is an attempt to portray the plight of Mariam that she undergoes due to her illegitimate social status. The study focuses on the critical societal attitude towards the illegitimate unfortunate women. Mariam begins her life with a “harami” status; continues her struggle for personal identity, suffer and endures as a battered woman and leave this world as a woman of consequences by digging herself out of the lower social status that society attached to her. The study analyzes Mariam’s endurance, struggles and resistance in her strenuous journey to attain legitimate ending. The researcher used feminist literary criticism to interpret the text as a research methodology and adopted close textual analysis of the text by Khaled Hosseini, A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Beginning in the twelfth century, edicts of expulsion set in motion for the first time since early antiquity forced Jewish population movement. There have arguably been two further sources of pre-modern involuntary Jewish migration—repressive governmental edicts that made Jewish life spiritually or materially impossible and popular violence so threatening as to necessitate flight. Neither of these pressures is clear-cut in its impact, as were the edicts of expulsion from European states. This chapter considers the impact of both these pressures on Jewish population movement. It describes instances of abrogation of basic Jewish religious rights, expressed as governmental demands that Jews convert to the ruling faith.

The paper attempts to project Bhim Rao Ambedkar as one of the foremost liberal feminists who advocated for Hindu women’s legal rights through the constitutional provisions listed in the Hindu Code Bill. He proposed four major stipulations, “one change is that, the widow, the daughter, the widow of predeceased-son. All are given the same rank as the son in the matter of inheritance. In addition to that, the daughter is also given a share in her father’s property: her share is prescribed as half of that of the son.”[1] To contemplate the predicament and marginalized position of Indian women, Ambedkar posited that caste and gender are intertwined. The imposition of endogamy was made compulsory by Brahaminical hierarchy which eulogized by Hindu religious scriptures to ensure sustained subjectivity of women, which eventually depreciated the egalitarian position of women. The focal point of the research paper remains a close textual analysis of Ambedkarite canon with archival study and genealogical examination contouring the discourse. The paper also encompasses potent reasons to establish the differences between the marginalization of upper-caste women and Dalit women. Difference between them is maintained by the ‘graded inequality.’ After having observed such differences, the paper intends to extend the idea that Ambedkar worked as a socio-political champion for Dalit women and Indian women concomitantly. To guarantee the freedom, equality, and individuality of Indian women, Ambedkar resorted to legalized mechanism and constitutional provisions. Key Words: Ambedkar, Hindu Code Bill, Manusmriti, Indian Women, Dalit Women, Indian Feminism, Caste, Patriarchy

This chapter illustrates how the BBC’s Children in Need telethon is informed and legitimated by different currency models as part of its aesthetic strategy. It demonstrates how these televisual currencies may be directly aligned with other kinds of medical currency models emerging within the economy of the UK’s National Health Service. Through close textual analysis of the programme and a related analysis of medical currency models proposed and piloted in relation to the NHS, it is argued that the ‘aestheticization’ of currency models provided by the programme reflects an ideological shift in the representation of medical care on public service television, in line with the ideology of neoliberalism and the incremental colonization of ‘financialization’ into all aspects of contemporary society.
