This investigation aims to examine innovation in a selected successful Portuguese social venture (The Cooperative Terra Chã) and to analyse the extent to which innovative social ventures are able to contributeto local development. Specifically, the paper highlights the activities developed by the social organization in response to the needs of particular (micro) segments of society and illustrates which key factors triggered thesuccess of the examined social initiative. A case study methodology is used to describe the distinctive characteristics and strategies pursued by the managers of the social venture and to establish the links between the opportunities for social innovation and the territory. The data collected for the study were triangulated from desk research and from in-depth semi-structured interviews conducted with privileged actors.The results show that social innovation is a viable strategy to revitalize the region’s socio-economic tissue, through the creation of new economic activities and consequently local employment that are based on the village’straditional activities. This strategy seeks to achieve sustainable economic growth and well-being for the people of the region. However, to be successful, the strategy demands a deep knowledge of existing social problems as well as the availability of endogenous local resources and capabilities for use by social entrepreneurs. In this context, social innovation should be a participatory process, in which different entities and the beneficiaries of social programs were active players.

Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar as iniciativas de inovação social desenvolvidas pelo Programa de Articulação de Tecnologias Apropriadas às Comunidades (PATAC), a partir do modelo proposto por Lévesque (2002). Nesse sentido, foram observados os três níveis de análise apresentados no modelo: atores, organizacional e institucional. Realizou-se um estudo de caso descritivo e exploratório, a partir da realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas junto a gestores e técnicos do programa supracitado. Na análise dos atores, percebe-se envolvimento da comunidade pela valorização da cultura e da capacidade de aprendizado. No nível organizacional, observou-se que, nos projetos geridos, tem um caráter compartilhado, na busca do fortalecimento sociopolítico. Os resultados demonstram que, no nível institucional, o processo de inovação social tem como função coordenar os diferentes setores da sociedade, para manter redes de relacionamentos e cooperação para funcionamento dos projetos e programas sociais envolvidos. Assim, os níveis de análise da inovação social não devem ser entendidos apenas como mecanismo isolado de satisfação das necessidades sociais, mas também como um mecanismo de transformação social que busca mudanças na configuração da sociedade como meio de promover a sustentabilidade e a qualidade de vida.Palavras-chave: Inovação social. Desenvolvimento local.ABSTRACTThis paper aims to analyze the social innovation initiatives developed by the Appropriate Technology Joint Program for Communities (PATAC) from the model proposed by Lévesque (2002). In this sense, the three levels of analysis presented in the model were observed: actors, organizational and institutional. We conducted a study of descriptive and exploratory case from conducting semi-structured interviews with managers and technicians of the aforementioned program. In the analysis of the actors, the community’s involvement is appreciated by the valorization of the culture and the learning capacity. At the organizational level, it was observed that in managed projects, it has a shared character, in the search for socio-political strengthening. The results demonstrate that at the institutional level the social innovation process has the function of coordinating the different sectors of society to maintain networks of relationships and cooperation for the operation of the social projects and programs involved. Thus, analysis of levels of social innovation should not be understood only as a single mechanism of satisfaction of social needs, but also as a social transformation engine that seeks changes in society setting as a means of promoting sustainability and quality of life.Keywords: Social innovation. The family business in the field of social economy represents the actions and commitments it has with its members and the community, according to the philosophy and principles of the cooperative as a business organization; it also helps to strengthen its social capital and promote family integration.The objective of the study was to analyze the family business as a boost to the social economy from the organizational figure of the cooperative, taking as a case study a tourist cooperative in northern Sinaloa, Mexico. This business has more than 30 years’ operating as a cooperative society and is in its third generation, is made up of 15 members, members of the same family who in turn hold the main positions at the general assembly. The research was conducted as a case studywith a qualitative methodology approach, collecting data through observation, review of documents and semi-structured interviews to key family members.The results indicate that the family and cooperative business, share decision-making and collective well-being, promoting the social economy by working together and distributing goods fairly; allowing the continuity of the company for the next generation.

Abstract: One of the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 crisis undisputedly is changes in the way people use public spaces including green spaces. Some people despite the social isolation rules still often visit public green spaces to maintain their well-being. This study aimed to rethink how green spaces as a sociable place can be more adaptable to fulfill the new needs of people which have arisen due to the pandemic. Direct-structured observation and semi-structured interviews with purposive sampling were conducted in the park located in Batam, Indonesia. It was revealed that the use of this park as a sociable place has prioritized most on ‘relaxation’ behaviours at one time, followed by ‘affiliation’ and ‘interaction’ behaviours after the pandemic strikes. The ‘affiliation’ activities, nevertheless, were interestingly the top reason for people visiting this park more frequently in a week. The proposed post-pandemic concept of the park as a sociable green space was subsequently conceived around the circulation, furniture, and activity settings with several design strategies as a response to the key issues concerning the social behaviours and health protocol system in this park. Abstrak: Salah satu dampak jangka panjang dari krisis COVID-19 yang tidak terbantahkan adalah perubahan cara orang menggunakan ruang publik termasuk ruang terbuka hijau. Walaupun terdapat aturan isolasi sosial, beberapa orang masih sering mengunjungi ruang terbuka hijau untuk menjaga kesehatan mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memikirkan ulang bagaimana ruang terbuka hijau sebagai ruang publik ramah atau tempat bersosialisasi dapat menjadi lebih adaptif untuk memenuhi kebutuhan baru masyarakat yang muncul akibat pandemi. Observasi langsung terstruktur dan wawancara semi terstruktur dengan purposive sampling dilakukan di taman yang terletak di Batam, Indonesia. Studi ini menemukan bahwa penggunaan taman tersebut sebagai ruang publik ramah telah memprioritaskan perilaku 'relaksasi' dalam satu waktu, diikuti oleh perilaku 'afiliasi' dan 'interaksi' setelah pandemi melanda. Namun menariknya, aktivitas yang berkaitan dengan ‘afiliasi’ menjadi alasan utama orang untuk lebih sering mengunjungi taman ini dalam satu minggu. Usulan konsep taman pasca pandemi sebagai ruang terbuka hijau ramah kemudian digagas terkait pengaturan sirkulasi, furnitur, dan aktivitas dengan beberapa strategi desain sebagai respon terhadap isu-isu utama mengenai perilaku sosial dan sistem protokol kesehatan di taman ini.

AbstractWhat happens, if a university moves to a town that never had a higher education institution previously? What is the impact of this development both on the community and the institution? The aim of this paper is to answer this question. The authors use the concept of ‘social innovation’ for understanding the developments. An institute may initiate, organise and coordinate all kinds of learning that takes place in a given community (Bradford, 2003). To do so, the institute may have to change its missions (not only its third, but also its first, second and third ones. These developments could be interpreted as a ‘social innovation’ during which the local economy and society was challenged and they looked for new responses. As suggested in the ‘social innovation’ literature the main research method was participatory research, combined with structured and semi-structured interviews, story-telling and narrative analyses. As a result, three interest groups could be described with various requirements different demands toward the university; while the university had to modify its structure, curriculum and communications. The main lesson to learn is that ’social innovation’ as a frame of interpretation can be used to understand the developmental processes that occurred between the locals and a new university.

Background and Purpose: Disturbances that hinder community development affect social capital. I refer to such disturbances as social cancer. This article aims at explaining the existence of social cancers, their typologies, and implications for Sea Indigenous People’s community development through economic activities.   Methodology: This exploratory case study involved 12 Sea Indigenous People in Johor, Malaysia. Data obtained through interviews were analysed using a thematic approach.   Findings: The findings revealed four types of social cancer in the community’s economic activities: 1) jealousy, 2) prejudice, 3) slander, and 4) defamation. Those social cancers had direct impacts on community development, specifically forming sabotage actions, negligence in using community capital, reducing community cohesiveness, causing a decline in the production of social innovation, and the existence of a hanging community and the death of the community.   Contributions: This study calls for a self-realisation mechanism to be introduced to community members so that their capacity for social capital can be developed to overcome the social cancer. Despite the myriad of possibilities and applications of additive manufacturing (AM) technology, knowledge about the social impacts of this technology is very scarce and very limited in some areas. This paper explores how factors generated by the development of AM technology may create social impacts, affecting the health and social well-being of people, quality of life, working conditions, and the creation of wealth. This paper presents the results of an exploratory multiple case study conducted among four Portuguese organizations that use AM technology, aiming to determine their perceptions regarding the social impacts of AM, its effects, and causes. The results confirm that AM technology is mainly seen to create positive impacts on health and safety (regarding physical hazards), on expectations for the future, on leisure and recreation, on low disruption with the local economy, on economic prosperity, on the professional status, and on innovative employment types. Nevertheless, a negative impact was also found on health and safety (concerning hazardous substances), as well as several mixed and null impacts. The main limitations of the research arise from the use of a case study methodology, since the results can be influenced by contextual factors, such as the size of the organizations in the sample, and/or social, cultural, technological, political, economic, and ecological factors. This study gives an up-to-date contribution to the topic of AM social impacts and social changes, an area which is still little-explored in the literature.

Abstract Little is known about the stressors of working in covert and undercover policing roles and the impact these can have on the health and psychological well-being of police officers. Extant literature focuses upon the social impact of undercover and covert policing in a democratic society, especially in relation to policing political groups. Presented here are the results of an exploratory study into the lives of former police officers who have engaged in various forms of covert/undercover policing. Utilising semi-structured interviews, in a five-participant case-study design, this research investigates the impact that covert and undercover policing has on the well-being of former officers who have undertaken this role, and how they utilised coping strategies. Data were thematically analysed using Braun and Clarke’s framework (Braun and Clarke 2006). Findings were consistent in that fear of violence was a large factor that impacted the well-being and personal relationships of undercover officers. The paper concludes by outlining pertinent suggestions for future research and considers the implications for covert policing.

The smart cities policy approach has been intensively implemented in European cities under the Horizon 2020 programme. However, these implementations not only reduce the interdependencies among stakeholders to technocratic Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) models, but also fail to question the identities of strategic stakeholders and how they prioritise their business/social models. These aspects are putting democracy at stake in smart cities. Therefore, this article aims to unfold and operationalise multistakeholders’ policy frameworks from the social innovation perspective by suggesting the ex-novo penta-helix framework—including public, private, academia, civic society, and social entrepreneurs/activists—to extend the triple and quadruple-helix frameworks. Based on fieldwork action research conducted from February 2017 to December 2018—triangulating desk research, 75 interviews, and three validation workshops—this article applies the penta-helix framework to map out five strategic dimensions related to (i) multistakeholder helix framework and (ii) the resulting business/social models comparatively in three follower cities of the H2020-Replicate project: Essen (Germany), Lausanne (Switzerland), and Nilüfer (Turkey). For each case study, the findings reveal: (i) a unique multistakeholder composition, (ii) diverse preferences on business/social models, (iii) a regular presence of the fifth helix as intermediaries, and (iv) the willingness to experiment with democratic arrangements beyond the hegemonic PPP.

Abstract The Indonesian state and local community have been conducting forest co-management as part of a new social forestry program initiative. This initiative is proposed to overcome environmental degradation as well as to enhance community well-being by increasing economic outcome of the forest. However, this program has the potential for conflict because of asymmetry between resources dedicated to approving social forestry permits versus capacity building, monitoring, and evaluating management outcomes. The social innovation approaches have been adopted as a potential solution to address complex social forestry program. This article aims to explore how social innovation and village governance in forest communities works. The research framework is designed by modifying the social innovation concept from the Theoretical, Empirical and Policy Foundations for Building Social Innovation in Europe (TEPSIE). Qualitative method is applied, by conducting in-depth interview and focus group discussion with forest policy experts, village authorities, and other stakeholders. Two neighbouring villages namely Sirnajaya and Tugu Utara in the Bogor District, West Java are visited. Sirnajaya represents village with strong government support by the Pilot Program for Incubation of Village Innovation in Local Economic Development (PIID-PEL), while Tugu Utara represents a strong society initiative in local development. The result reveals that social innovation has worked at different phases. However, good cooperation between formal and informal actors can have a better outcome on village development, compared to if each moves independently. The extension of social innovation and network of development can become an engine of village growth to the larger scope. The successful management for social forestry in Indonesia needs to be based on a hybrid governance model that needs to be “good” and “proper”. Therefore, the designs and practices for social forestry governance must be developed in more socially inclusive, reflected local social-economic, political, and cultural conditions.

This article analyses the relationship between migrant entrepreneurship, marginalisation and social innovation. It does so, by looking how their ‘otherness’ is used on the one hand to reproduce their marginalised situation in society and on the other to develop new living and working arrangements promoting social innovation in society. The paper is based on a qualitative study, which was carried out from March 2014- 2016. In this period, twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with migrant entrepreneurs and experts. As the results show, migrant entrepreneurs are characterised by a false dichotomy of “native weakness” in economic self-organisation against the “classical strength” of majority entrepreneurs. It is shown that new possibilities of acting in the context of migrant entrepreneurship are mostly organised in close relation to the lifeworlds and specific needs deriving from this sphere. Social innovation processes initiated by migrant entrepreneurs through their economic activities thus develop on a micro level and are hence less apparent. Supportive networks are missing on a structural level, so it becomes difficult for single innovative initiatives to be long-lasting.
