The effect of human activities and oil pollution on the microbiological quality of Udu River was investigated from September 2002 to January 2003. The microbiological parameters were carried out using the standard microbiological techniques. The bacterial and fungal loads were shown to be highest in the inhabited stations (2 and 3) with downstream (station 4) suffering from dilution effects of human activities and upstream (station 1) showing lower counts. Stations 2 and 3 were shown to record the highest heterotrophic microbial load 10.7 x 108 cfuml-1 and 10.4 x 108 cfuml-1 and 8.0 x 108 cfuml-1 and 9.0 x 108 cfuml-1 for bacterial and fungal isolates respectively. Total coliform counts ranges from 1.5 – 4.3 x 106 and 1.4 – 2.8 x 106 MPN100ml-1 for stations 2 and 3. Microorganism isolated and characterized includes nine bacterial and four fungal genera. The bacterial isolates were Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Proteus, Escherichia, Clostridium, Acetobacter, Salmonella, Pseudomonas, Micrococcus, and the predominant fungal isolates includes, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Geotrichum and Helminthosporium. The concentrations of total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), conductivity, total iron, total solids, total copper and total dissolved solids were shown to be higher in stations 2 and 3 than station 1 which have no direct human activities. Similarly, the values obtained for salinity, total hardness and dissolved oxygen (DO) of the inhabited stations were shown to be lower than station 1. Correlation coefficient shows positive relationship between the different microbial populations and some physiochemical parameters studied.

The purpose of the study was to assess the water quality parameters of Ala River found in Akure, Ondo State, Southwest, Nigeria. The river is considered one of the most important irrigation and drinking water resources in Akure, Nigeria. Three locations were chosen spatially along the watercourse to reflect a consideration of all possible human activities that are capable of affecting the quality of the river water. The water samples were collected monthly for three consecutive months (February to April 2015) at the three sampling sites. The water samples collected were analyzed for physicochemical parameters which include pH, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total hardness, phosphate,  temperature,  calcium, magnesium, chlorine, nitrate, iron and zinc using standard methods and their environmental effects on the river were investigated. There were variations in the quality of the sampled water when compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) standards for domestic and commercial water for the selected parameters. The traces of some hazardous physical and chemical impurities in the river were above the acceptable limits, and thereby pose a health risk to several rural communities who rely heavily on the river primarily as their source of domestic water. Therefore, the law should be enforced to discourage unnecessary waste dumping and discharging of another form of pollutants into surface water in Nigeria.

The Bacteriological and physicochemical quality of five (5) boreholes (Ikoyi’s lodge, Newton’s Villa, Iyobosa Hostel, Embassy Hostel and Amega Villa) in Ekosodin village were investigated fortnightly, from March 2004 – July 2004. The bacteriological analysis showed low counts of total heterotrophic and potential human pathogenic bacteria that ranged from 1.0 x 101 cfu/mI – 3.1 x 101 cfu/mI, and 0.0 – 1.9 x 101 cfu/mI respectively. Total coliform counts with MPN values ranged from 0.00MPN/100mI – 9MPN/100mI. E coli occurred occasionally in stations 2, 3 and 5 with a range of 0.00MPN/100mI – 4MPN/100mI. Streptococcus faecalis was observed only in station 3, Clostridium perfringens was not detected in any of the sampled stations. Other organisms isolated and characterized during the study included Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus sp. Some of the physicochemical parameters studied included water temperature, conductivity, pH, total suspended solids, and total dissolved solids. All had low mean concentrations that ranged from 27.0ºC – 28.0ºC; 9.2 – 13.6 us/cm, 6.4 – 6.7; 0.06 – 0.08mg/l and 0.15 – 0.20mg/l respectively. The biological oxygen demand (BOD), dissolved oxygen (DO), total alkalinity and total hardness in mg/l were all low and ranged from 0.08mg/l – 0.2mg/l; 0.7mg/l – 1.0mg/l; 5.0mg/l – 6.0mg/l and 0.10mg/l – 0.13mg/l respectively. Other parameters with low concentration were nitrate (0.05 – 0.11mg/l), sulphate, (0.07mg/l – 0.13mg/l) and phosphate (0.0mg/l – 0.10mg/l). All the physicochemical parameters considered did not indicate any possible physicochemical pollution as they all fell within the (9) maximum permissible level for portable water. There were both positive and negative correlations between some of the bacteriological and physicochemical properties at a significant level of 95% probability limit. Based on the bacteriological and physicochemical parameters studied, boreholes 1 and 4 are fit for direct consumption, while bore holes 2, 3 and 5 failed to meet the bacteriological standard for portable water.

This study was carried out to investigate the physicochemical and bacteriological quality of well water samples in Ido community. Thirty water samples were collected from five different wells ( six samples from each well) and subjected to standard microbiological and physicochemical analysis. All physicochemical properties showed difference (p<0.05) in all the wells analyzed except temperature and turbidity. Temperature ranged between 25.3±3.50C and 26±2.350C; pH, 6.3±0.7 and 6.9±0.3; electrical conductivity, 127.6±1.9 and 157.8±7.7μs/cm; total suspended solids, 25.2±8.9 and 53.2±1.8mg/l; turbidity, 0.15±0.7 and 1.20±1.4NTU; dissolved oxygen, 4.40±2.8 and 5.35±2.1 mg/l; Biological Oxygen Demand, 9.40±2.8 and15.4±2.8mg/l; Chemical Oxygen Demand, 177.2±1.6 and 260.3±1.6mg/l; chloride, 59.8±8.5 and 101.2±2.6mg/l and total hardness, 246.6±1.9 and 395.6±2.7mg/l. All values fell within WHO standards except Chemical Oxygen Demand (WHO Standard 40mg/l) and total hardness (WHO Standard 100mg/l). Results of microbial population did not show any difference (p>0.05) across the wells. However, Total Heterotrophic Bacteria ranged from  2.15±0.91×104 to 5.3±0.86×104cfu/ml; total coliform, 3.00±0.77×104 to 6.18±0.73×104 cfu/ml; Total feacal coliform, 2.61±0.71×104 to 4.39±0.76×104 cfu/ml; Total vibrio count, 2.68±0.81× 103  to 4.4±0.86×103 cfu/ml; Total salmonella shigella count. 2.02±0.84×103 to 4.8±0.95×103 cfu/ml. Total coliform bacteria ranged from 220 to > 1600 coliform MPN index /100ml-1, while thermo tolerant coliform bacteria ranged from 220 to  1600 coliform MPN index /100ml-1.  A total of forty bacterial isolates belonging to ten genera were identified. They include species of Bacillus 22 (26.4%), Staphylococcus 14(16.8%), Vibrio 13(15.7%), Serratia 6(7.3%), Enterobacter 6(7.3%), Chromobacterium 4(4.8%), Salmonella 4 (4.9%), Shigella 4(4.8%) and E. coli 4(4.8%).  This  result highlights the fact that  well water in Ido community are not safe microbiologically for drinking without additional treatment such as boiling or disinfection and this could lead to outbreak of water borne diseases. Good and proper environmental and personal hygiene is advocate especially by the users of those wells to prevent their contamination with bacterial pathogens.

The hydro geochemical features of Neyyar River for a period of one year from May 2015 to April 2016 were analyzed. Six sampling sites were fixed considering physiography and present landuse pattern of the river basin. The residents in the drainage basin are primarily responsible for framing a better landuse and thereby maintain a good water and sediment regime. Geospatial pattern of the present landuse of the study area indicated that the sustainability of this river ecosystem is in danger due to unscientific landuse practices, which is reflected in the river quality as well. The parameters such as hydrogen ion concentration, electrical conductivity, chloride, Biological Oxygen Demand, total hardness and sulphate of river water and Organic Carbon of river bed sediments were analyzed in this study. The overall analysis shows that the highland areas are characterized by better quality of water together with low organic carbon, which is mainly due to better landuse and minimal reclamation. The midland and lowland areas are characterized by poor quality of water with high organic carbon, which is due to high anthropogenic activities and maximum pollutants associated with the region together with the alteration in landuse from a traditional eco-friendly pattern to a severely polluted current pattern.

“Soumbara” is a fermented product sold in the markets of several West African countries. In the markets, it is sold in several formats (granulated, powder, and paste). The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of these three types of “Soumbara” sold in the Korhogo markets. For this purpose, a preliminary survey followed by a sampling of 54 samples of “Soumbara” was carried out. The microorganism load count was carried out according to microbiological standards. The pH, titratable acidity, and moisture content were measured, respectively, with a pH meter, by dosing with sodium hydroxide solution and by differential weighing after passing the sample through the oven. The pH of the different samples is around 6. The moisture content is higher in “Soumbara” paste (20-24.7%) than in powdered (7.3-9.3%) and granulated (8.6-10.7%) “Soumbara.” The acidity rates are between 0.07 and 0.13%, 0.2 and 0.3%, and 0.08 and 0.1%, respectively, for the granulated, powder, and paste types. Mesophilic aerobic germ loads (6.17-8.38 log10 cfu/g) for all three types of “Soumbara” are above the standard. Total coliform (1.13-2.96 log10 cfu/g), mould (0.86-2.52 log10 cfu/g), and yeast (0.33-1.53 log10 cfu/g) loads are below standard. The microbiological quality of the three types of “Soumbara” is unsatisfactory. Overall, “Soumbara” powder is the most contaminated, followed by granulated and paste “Soumbara.” “Soumbara” must be added during culinary preparations in order to avoid possible public health problems.

In this study, the microbiological quality of traditionally produced Bez Sucuk in Tokat and its vicinity was investigated. For this purpose, 30 Bez Sucuk samples obtained from butchers, producers of Bez Sucuk, were analyzed for total count of mesophilic aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, yeasts-moulds, total coliform, fecal coliform, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Cl. perfringens. Also, the presence of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. were investigated in all samples. pH and water activity of the samples were determined. As the result of the analysis, the counts of the microbiological parameters investigated were found as follows: total mesophilic aerobic bacteria 3.5×106-4.23×109 CFU/g, lactic acid bacteria 5.55×105-2.45×109 CFU/g, yeasts and moulds 2.50×103-6.90×109 CFU/g, total coliform

Assessment of the quality of tap water at Kuantan area of Pahang, Malaysia was investigated. The parameters analyzed were total coliform, Escherichia coli, pH, total hardness, sulfate, and selected heavy metal based on drinking water quality standard Malaysia and WHO. The results showed that the fungi in the tap water in Kuantan area in different concentrations were Aspergillus sp., Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, Penicillium citrinum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Cerrena sp., Aspergillus aculeatus, A. flavus, Cryptococcus sp., Cladosporium perangustum, Purpureocillium lilacinum and Candida catenulata. The residual free chlorine varied from 0.05 to 1.97 mg/l.

This study examined the effects of trisodium phosphate (TSP), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), and sodium metaphosphate (SMP) dipping solutions on the microbiological quality of catfish frames (the carcasses remaining after skinless boneless fillets are removed). Frames were dipped for 5 min in 10% phosphate solutions at 5°C, drained for 2 min, and analyzed for aerobic plate counts and total coliform counts. TSP reduced aerobic plate and total coliform counts by 1.0 and 2.5 log CFU/ml of rinse buffer, respectively. STPP reduced aerobic plate and total coliform counts by 0.3 and 1.0 logs, respectively. SMP did not reduce aerobic plate counts, but did decrease total coliform counts by 0.7 logs. The microbiological shelf life (time to reach 107 CFU/ml) of the frames treated with TSP was 3 days longer than controls. Rinsing frames in water after phosphate treatment reduced the effectiveness of the dips. The results demonstrate that TSP was more effective than either STPP or SMP in reducing microbial numbers on the surface of the frames and provided a subsequent shelf life extension.

The consumption of bottled and plastic-bagged drinking water in Tanzania has increased largely because of the deteriorating quality of tap water. It is uncertain whether these water products are safe for drinking. In this study, the microbiological quality of bottled and plastic-bagged drinking water sold in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, was investigated. One hundred and thirty samples representing 13 brands of bottled water collected from shops, supermarkets and street vendors were analysed for total coliform and faecal coliform organisms as well as heterotrophic bacteria. These were compared with 61 samples of tap water. Heterotrophic bacteria were detected in 92% of the bottled water samples analysed. Total and faecal coliform bacteria were present in 4.6% and 3.6%, respectively, of samples analysed with a tendency for higher contamination rates in plastic-bagged drinking water. Microbiological quality of tap water was found to be worse compared with bottled water, with 49.2% and 26.2% of sampling points showing the presence of total coliform and faecal coliform organisms, respectively. The results suggest caution and vigilance to avert outbreaks of waterborne diseases from these types of drinking water.

Food waste or food loss is food that is unnecessary or lost uneaten. The reasons of food waste or loss are various and take place at the stages of production, processing, transaction and utilization. The main objective of this study was to access the quality of groundwater in Faisalabad city.               From different food industries of Faisalabad water samples were collected to estimate their physicochemical parameters. The physiochemical parameters such as (pH, Electrical conductivity, Total dissolved solids, Calcium, Bi-carbonates, Total Hardness and chloride) were analyzed and their values were compared with the standard values. In the majority of the industries waste, water was not up to the mark. pH, TSS, EC and Chlorides values were out of range in most of the samples. On the completion of data physiochemical parameters of groundwater, statistical analysis was applied. Descriptive statistics were carried out to evaluate the significant differences between means of samples.
