A study on the crystallography of the lime that comes from mussel shell has been conducted to determine the packing density of the material. The experimental analysis encompasses of concrete samples preparation with lime replacement at 5%, 7.5% and 10% by cement weight. The samples were carbonised naturally over a period of six months and subjected to the phenolphthalein test at 60, 90, 120 and 180 days. It has been found that lime originating from the mussel shell is of both the aragonitic and calcitic crystal types. Both crystal polymorphs of aragonite and calcite are denser than the typical normal concrete by 27.8% and 18.3% respectively. This suggest a volumizing effect that is beneficial to reduce carbonation penetration into the capillarity of the concrete. Results from the carbonation test indicate that concrete containing mussel shell lime ash showed up to 51% lower carbonation coefficient and significantly lower intensity of capillarity as shown via FESEM. ABSTRAK: Kajian mengenai kristalografi kapur yang didapati daripada kulit kupang telah dijalankan bagi menentukan kepadatan bahan tersebut. Analisis eksperimen merangkumi penyediaan sampel-sampel konkrit yang mengandungi gantian kapur pada 5%, 7.5% dan 10% daripada berat simen. Sampel-sampel telah dikarbonatkan secara alami selama enam bulan dan menjalani ujian fenolftalin pada usia 60, 90, 120 dan 180 hari. Kajian telah mendapati bahawa kulit kupang terdiri daripada kapur-kapur berjenis aragonit dan kalsit. Kedua-dua polimorf kapur aragonit dan kalsit adalah 27.8% dan 18.3% lebih tumpat berbanding konkrit biasa. Hal ini berpotensi menjadi bahan penumpat yang bagus untuk mengurangkan serapan pengkarbonatan ke dalam kapilari konkrit. Keputusan ujian pengkarbonatan menunjukkan konkrit yang mengandungi abu kapur kulit kupang mempunyai pekali pengkarbonatan sehingga 51% lebih rendah dan mempunyai kerendahan kapilariti yang signifikan seperti yang ditunjukkan melalui FESEM.

Anemonia viridis is an abundant and widely distributed temperate sea anemone that can form dense congregations of individuals. Despite the potential severity of its sting, few detailed cases have been reported. We report a case of a severe toxic reaction following an A. viridis sting in a 35-year-old oceanographer. She developed severe pain, itching, redness, and burning sensation, which worsened one week after treatment with anti-inflammatories, antihistamines and corticosteroids. Prompted by this event, and due to the insufficient risk prevention, lack of training for marine-environment users, and lack of research into sting-specific first-aid protocols, we evaluated the cnidocyst response to five different compounds commonly recommended as rinse solutions in first-aid protocols (seawater, vinegar, ammonia, baking soda, and freshwater) by means of the Tentacle Solution Assay. Vinegar and ammonia triggered an immediate and massive cnidocyst discharge after their application and were classified as activator solutions. Baking soda and freshwater were also classified as activator solutions, although with a lower intensity of discharge. Only seawater was classified as a neutral solution and therefore recommended as a rinse solution after A. viridis sting, at least until an inhibitory solution is discovered.

Introduction: The aim of the research presented was to determine whether the temporal perspective of socially maladjusted adolescents, held against their will in conditions of institutional isolation, can be linked to the level of their mental functioning. Method: The researchers applied standardized psychological tests in a survey of a group of 311 adolescents (38 females, 273 males), aged 13–18, who were held in a youth education center (YEC) following family court rulings. Results: After a psychological characterization of three groups of adolescents with different temporal perspectives, distinguished on the basis of cluster analysis, it was proven that the temporal perspective of adolescents held in institutional isolation is crucial to the quality of their mental functioning. The participants who scored significantly lower in all dimensions of temporal perspective seemed to be experiencing lower-intensity loneliness, depression and stress. Those, on the other hand, whose perspective was of the present-hedonistic or past-negative types felt lonelier, lived under more stress and suffered from more severe forms of depression. The teenagers whose temporal perspective was past-positive and future-oriented turned out to be most balanced in terms of the investigated psychological variables, which may confirm the importance of a balanced temporal perspective for good quality of life. Conclusions: The strongest effect was found in relation to peer and family loneliness, which indicates the importance of family and peers in the teenagers’ psychosocial development. These findings promote further reflection on the legitimacy of institutional measures used in the rehabilitation of socially maladjusted youth to date, and the search for new, effective kinds of social rehabilitation intervention.

Introduction. Cramps are sudden, involuntary, painful tonic muscle spasms of individual muscles or muscle groups lasting from several seconds to several minutes. It occurs in patients of different age categories with a frequency of up to 37 %. Tissue flossing (flossing, voodoo flossing) is an effect on the musculature, tendons, fascia (myofascial structures) of the extremities with the help of a special elastic band circularly wound on the limb, and subsequent physical exercises in this condition in order to improve blood circulation in the limb segment, increase tissue mobility, elasticity and extensibility of muscle-fascial structures. Tissue flossing can help to increase the volume of movements in the joints, reduce pain and increase flexibility.The aim to study the effects of tissue flossing on the frequency and intensity of manifestations of cramps. Materials and methods. The publication was based on the materials obtained during the observation of 7 patients with cramps. The aggressive nature of the muscle spasms forced them to seek medical help. In order to assess the effect on the frequency and intensity of cramps, patients underwent circular winding of an elastic band on a limb segment (tissue flossing) in which cramps occurred, followed by physical exercises (mainly flexion and extension at a pace of one movement per second) without additional load (with their weight) for 1 minute. Then the elastic band was removed and the patient continued to perform the same movements also for a minute with a frequency of one movement per second. Patients performed exercises 1-2 times a day for 5-14 days.Results. In five out of seven patients, cramps did not resume after the first use of tissue flossing. In two of the seven patients, cramps stopped after 7 days of exercise use. At follow-up in one (out of seven) patients, cramps resumed 2 months after the use of tissue flossing, but with a lower intensity. In the other six (out of seven) patients in the subsequent follow-up period (from 14 days to 6 months), cramps did not resume.Conclusion. According to the preliminary results of observations, it can be assumed that the tissue flossing method is effective for preventing cramps of various genesis as an independent and additional method of treatment.

The effect of the magnetic field on heat transfer processes of a magnetized steel plate cooled in a magnetic fluid is experimentally studied. Thermocouples were installed at six points on the surface of the plate along its length. The plots of temperature versus time are obtained in the absence of a magnetic field and in magnetic fields of different intensity. It is found that the intensity of heat exchange depends to a large extent on the magnitude of the magnetic field and on the location of points on the surface of the plate. In a magnetic field, cooling of the central part of the plate occurs with the same intensity as in the absence of a magnetic field and with a lower intensity in comparison with other points on the surface of the plate. Near the plate ends, the cooling rate of the surface is much greater in the magnetic field than in the absence of it. With increasing magnetic field strength, the cooling rate of points in the central part of the plate decreases and is less than in the absence of a magnetic field. The dependence of heat transfer on the magnitude of the magnetic field is explained by the distribution of the magnetic forces acting on the liquid surrounding the plate and the nature of the vapor-air cavities formed near its surface. Experiments on simulation of formation and the shape of vapor-air cavities in a liquid surrounding a magnetizing plate are described.

Abstract Little is known about whether older adults meet the recommended physical activity (PA) guidelines, including aerobic, strength, and balance components. Given this gap, we examined self-report PA data from 1,352 older adult participants of the Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) study. We classified participants as meeting some components, meeting the full guidelines, or being insufficiently active. Multinomial regression was used to identify factors associated with meeting PA guidelines. Despite performing 9.5 hours of weekly PA, only 11% met the full guidelines, 13% met the aerobic, and 26% met the balance or strength recommendations. Increasing age and body mass index, needing assistance with instrumental daily activities, heart disease, and low income were associated with decreased odds of meeting PA guidelines. Older adults primarily perform aerobic PA and lower intensity PA with fewer participating in strength and balance activities. Interventions targeting strength, balance, and higher intensity PA should be developed.

Inner ear hemorrhage is an extremely rare cause of sudden sensorineural hearing loss with few cases reported in the literature. We report the case of a 30-year-old male who presented with a sudden left ear hearing loss, with no tinnitus nor vertigo. The audiogram revealed a profound left sensorineural hearing loss. An MRI of the brain and internal auditory canal was performed 3 weeks after and revealed an increased signal intensity on T1-weighted (T1W) and T2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images in the left cochlea. No other abnormalities were found, in particular no enhancement after intravenous administration of gadolinium. The CISS 3D sequence showed a signal of discreetly lower intensity in the left cochlea compared to the right one. The diagnosis of intracochlear hemorrhage was made. No improvement of the hearing loss has been noted after medical treatment and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Driving pressure (ΔP) and mechanical power (MP) are associated with outcomes in critically ill patients, irrespective of the presence of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). INTELLiVENT-ASV, a fully automated ventilatory mode, controls the settings that affect ΔP and MP. This study compared the intensity of ventilation (ΔP and MP) with INTELLiVENT-ASV versus conventional ventilation in a cohort of COVID-19 ARDS patients in two intensive care units in the Netherlands. The coprimary endpoints were ΔP and MP before and after converting from conventional ventilation to INTELLiVENT-ASV. Compared to conventional ventilation, INTELLiVENT-ASV delivered ventilation with a lower ΔP and less MP. With conventional ventilation, ΔP was 13 cmH2O, and MP was 21.5 and 24.8 J/min, whereas with INTELLiVENT-ASV, ΔP was 11 and 10 cmH2O (mean difference –2 cm H2O (95 %CI –2.5 to –1.2 cm H2O), p < 0.001) and MP was 18.8 and 17.5 J/min (mean difference –7.3 J/Min (95% CI –8.8 to –5.8 J/min), p < 0.001). Conversion from conventional ventilation to INTELLiVENT-ASV resulted in a lower intensity of ventilation. These findings may favor the use of INTELLiVENT-ASV in COVID-19 ARDS patients, but future studies remain needed to see if the reduction in the intensity of ventilation translates into clinical benefits.

Apelin (APLN) is an adipokine mainly produced by adipose tissue and related to an individual’s nutritional status as well as digestive apparatus functions. In this work, APLN and its receptor (APLNR) were investigated, by immunohistochemistry, in the abomasum and duodenum of 15 Comisana × Appenninica adult sheep reared in a semi-natural pasture. Organ samples were collected after maximum pasture flowering (M × F group) and after maximum pasture dryness (M × D group); the experimental group (E × p group) received a feed supplementation of 600 grams/day/head of barley and corn in addition to M × D group feeding. APLN and APLNR were identified in the lining epithelium and the fundic gland chief cells of the abomasum. APLNR was observed in the lining epithelium, in the crypts and the serotonin secreting cells of the duodenum. Similar reactivity was observed between the M × F and E × p groups, while the M × D group showed a lower intensity of immunostaining for both APLN and APLNR in all positive structures but the duodenal serotonin neuroendocrine cells. Hence, our findings show that the E × p group presents a picture quite overlapped with M × F and suggest that food supplementation has a maintaining effect on the apelinergic system expression in the investigated digestive tracts of the sheep.
