AbstractThe long-term sustainability of the high-energy physics (HEP) research software ecosystem is essential to the field. With new facilities and upgrades coming online throughout the 2020s, this will only become increasingly important. Meeting the sustainability challenge requires a workforce with a combination of HEP domain knowledge and advanced software skills. The required software skills fall into three broad groups. The first is fundamental and generic software engineering (e.g., Unix, version control, C++, and continuous integration). The second is knowledge of domain-specific HEP packages and practices (e.g., the ROOT data format and analysis framework). The third is more advanced knowledge involving specialized techniques, including parallel programming, machine learning and data science tools, and techniques to maintain software projects at all scales. This paper discusses the collective software training program in HEP led by the HEP Software Foundation (HSF) and the Institute for Research and Innovation in Software in HEP (IRIS-HEP). The program equips participants with an array of software skills that serve as ingredients for the solution of HEP computing challenges. Beyond serving the community by ensuring that members are able to pursue research goals, the program serves individuals by providing intellectual capital and transferable skills important to careers in the realm of software and computing, inside or outside HEP.

Purpose Software training is a new trend in software applications. A key problem with software training is that video tutorials are developed without considering the target audience. Although video tutorials are popular, little attention is given to their design features. This study aims to investigate how two multimedia research principles, visual cueing (VC) and practice type, influence task performance, mental effort and motivation. Design/methodology/approach Three video tutorials on non-linear editing were viewed by 118 Computer Science undergraduate students with high information communication technology experience. To analyse the relationships between the research variables, a 2 (non-VC versus VC) × 2 (post-video viewing practice versus stepwise viewing-based practice (SVBP) mixed factorial design was used. Findings The results indicated that neither VC nor SVBP influenced task performance; however, both practice type conditions led to higher levels of motivation. Research limitations/implications The incorporation of VC and practice type in complex software training is less likely to be beneficial for domain experts. Future studies should record eye tracking data to capture learners’ behaviours whilst learning a software application. Moreover, practice targeted with immediate feedback should be incorporated as it enhances scaffolding. Practical implications Neither practice type was considered effective by experts. A practice strategy with user-controlled pausing (i.e. markers) could enhance retention by allowing users to practice tasks after locating the most relevant parts of the video tutorial. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature by investigating two guidelines: VC and practice type in the context of complex software training targeting domain experts.

One of the competencies mathematics teachers need is the deepening of subject matter in mathematical concepts. Among the methods that can be done is through software training to support mathematics lessons. One of the software that can be used in learning mathematics is Scilab software. The use of Scilab software in mathematics learning cannot be separated from the role of the teacher. This service activity aims to carry out online training for Scilab software for learning mathematics. The method used is an online training and evaluation of activities by a questionnaire about knowledge and skills using Scilab software. This online training was carried out synchronously two times in the September 2020 period and was accompanied asynchronously through the Edmodo software. 68 teachers actively participate in this online training who are members of the Mathematics Subject Teachers' Consultation (MGMP) for Lebak Regency High School Mathematics and Nusantara Mathematics for Banten Region. The teacher's response to learning using the Scilab software depends on the teacher's initial ability to use the software. The result of this activity is that this online training can add insight to teachers about mathematics learning software, especially Scilab. Of the 68 participants who participated in the training, only 36 participants filled out the questionnaire. There is 8 person with excellent results, 9 people satisfied, 6 people extraordinary, 10 people enough, and 3 people low.

Abstract. Research in geographic information science has not yet found clear answers to the questions of what geographic information is about or what a geographic information system (GIS) contains. This lack of consensus makes it especially challenging to teach and learn GIS. Existing pedagogical approaches either focus on the representational level of data (e.g., “raster and vector”) or are too generic (e.g., “geo-referenced information”). This characterization of GIS and its content is difficult for learners to transfer and apply broadly. As instructors, we approach the challenge of teaching GIS from a conceptual basis. We describe our process to develop a set of core concepts of spatial information, which we use to redesign an undergraduate-level introductory GIS course. Our intervention focuses instruction on the kinds of questions that geographic information enables before training students to produce workflows and answers through system commands. The course redesign complements and informs ongoing research on core concepts of spatial information. Our results demonstrate that GIS courses can deliver more than software training, indicating both theoretical gains and didactic challenges.

This article involves a study of the personnel management technologies digitalization degree based on the results of the SAP, Deloitte and Hays report, published in 2019. The analysis demonstrated HR automatization dependence on the size and specialization of organizations. The larger the company, the more complex personnel management processes are. The article defines four digitalization levels from the paper approach to the active use of artificial intelligence systems. Industries with the highest automatization percentage are identified. The article takes a closer look at personnel recruitment, selection, adaptation and training practices performed with the use of appropriate tools and programs. Among the most laborious recruitment functions stand communication with potential candidates, testing and interviewing, especially in cases of mass recruitment. Specialized programs that process CVs, build ratings, conduct video interviews and online testing to optimize recruiter’s work. The advantages of chatbots and messengers for adaptation digitalization are pointed out. Most executives have a positive attitude to the transition to new automated HR methods. The role of e-learning and software training is outlined, and the advantages of webinars, test constructors, and distance learning implementation are analyzed. It is noted that one third of Russian companies are actively automatizing employee training and development technologies. The article also highlights the most important personnel management processes that demand digital transformation in the first place. The automatization necessity of management accounting, effectiveness analysis of the current HR system, and benefits calculation is justified. Gamification advantages are outlined, as they are used in adaptation, training and personnel assessment processes.
