The continuous cooling transformation behavior of high-carbon pearlitic steel was studied by employing optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and the Vickers hardness test. The results show that the microstructure of the test steel is composed of proeutectoid cementite and lamellar pearlite in the cooling rate range of 0.05–2 °C/s and lamellar pearlite in the range of 2–5 °C/s. Further, martensite appears at 10 °C/s. With the increase in the cooling rate, the Vickers hardness of the test steel first decreases and then increases. In the industrial production of high-carbon pearlite steel, the formation of proeutectoid cementite at a low cooling rate needs to be avoided, and at the same time, the formation of martensite and other brittle-phase at a high cooling rate needs to be avoided.

In this research, the effect of hydrostatic pressure on metastable and stable pitting corrosion of API X80 steel was investigated by using electrochemical method in simulated deep-sea environment. Cumulative probability distribution analysis of metastable pitting events revealed that hydrostatic pressure promoted the occurrence of metastable pitting corrosion and transformation trend of metastable pitting corrosion to stable pitting corrosion. Moreover, according to the results of scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy(SKPFM) tests, pitting corrosion of test steel can be confirmed to originate from the position of the interface between the inclusion and the substrate. Finally, combined with finite element analysis, the mechanism by which hydrostatic pressure promotes the occurrence and expansion of stable pitting corrosion of test steel in simulated deep -sea environment is explained.

Through the Gleeble3500 thermal simulation test machine, the phase transformation law of Nb microalloyed steel was studied and tested. After the compression deformation, it was cooled to room temperature at different speeds. Obtain the dynamic continuous cooling transformation diagram and the scanning structure diagram of the test steel, and then analyze the phase composition under different cooling speeds through JMatPro material performance simulation. The results show that: at a lower cooling speed (0.1°C/s), austenite decomposition is a diffusion-type phase change that takes place in a high-temperature region, and carbon atoms can diffuse sufficiently. At a moderate cooling rate (1°C/s), the bainite phase transition is a semi-diffusion phase transition in which carbon atoms are displaced in a non-cooperative thermally activated transition mode. When the cooling rate is high (15°C/s), the martensitic transformation is a non-diffusion-type transformation carried out in the low temperature region, and the atoms are directly transferred from the austenite lattice to the martensite lattice. With the increase of the cooling rate and the decrease of the transition temperature, from low-speed cooling→medium-speed cooling→high-speed cooling, respectively, the diffusion type phase transition→semi-diffusion type phase transition→the non-diffusion type phase transition. At different cooling rates, the continuous cooling transition diagram simulated by JMatPro is basically the same as the phase transition in the dynamic continuous cooling transition diagram of the test steel, which proves that the simulation prediction of the dynamic continuous cooling transition of the test steel by the JMatPro software has high accuracy and applicability.

The tests were performed on ER7 steel according to EN 13262. Based on the hardenability test (GOST 5657) by the method of end hardening (Jomen) the distance from the surface from which unilateral cooling was performed, where the hardness met the requirements of regulatory documentation for wheels of test steel, and the distance where the formation of needle structures, including bainite and otmanshtette, no longer took place. Simulation was applied in the software package QForm VX 8.2, as a result, a model was developed, for the adaptation of which the results of the experiment were used. Confirmed the high convergence of the results of the calculation and the experiment. At the same time, the model allowed to obtain an instantaneous cooling rate in a form that is more in line with the physical meaning of the process and to avoid the scatter of actual values associated with the discreteness of data capture. It is established that the instantaneous cooling rate changes in the process of continuous uniform supply of the cooler. The developed model can be used to build thermokinetic diagrams under continuous cooling and to develop recommendations for heat treatment modes to achieve the specified mechanical properties under a certain structural state.

The MMS-200 thermal simulation testing machine was used to study the static softening behavior of low carbon high niobium microalloyed steel. The effect of niobium to the static recrystallization softening behavior of the microalloy steel had been analyzed by establishing the kinetics model of static recrystallization and the micro-morphology of precipitates. The results indicated that: the static softening behavior of the tested steel significantly influenced by the deformation temperature and the interval pass time of the rolling processing. At relatively high deformation temperature and long interval pass time, the ratio of static softening was increased. Then the deformation temperature was lower to 950°C, and the static softening behavior of the test steel was ceased. But when the deformation temperature was higher than 1000°C, the static softening behavior of the test steel completely occurred. The activation energy of the test steel was 325·mol-1 by the established model calculated.

The physical metallurgical tests were performed on the test samples made of HR3C steel, taken from a section of a pipeline in the as-received condition and after approximately 26,000 h of service at 550 °C. In the as-received condition, the test material had austenitic microstructure with numerous large primary Z-phase precipitates inside the grains. The service of the test steel mainly contributed to the precipitation processes inside the grains and at the grain boundaries. After service, the following precipitates were identified in the microstructure of the test steel: Z-phase (NbCrN) and M23C6 carbides. The Z-phase precipitates were observed inside the grains, whereas M23C6 carbides - at the boundaries where they formed the so-called continuous grid. The service of the test steel contributed to the growth of the strength properties, determined both at room and elevated temperature (550, 600 °C), compared to the as-received condition. Moreover, the creep properties of HR3C steel after service were higher than those of the material in the as-received condition. The increase in the strength properties and creep resistance was connected with the growth of strengthening of the test steel by the precipitation of Z-phase and M23C6 carbides.

The work investigates the properties of lead-free free-machining steel grade A30KhMAR, containing BN inclusions, in comparison with the base Cr-Mo steel 30KhM, lead-bearing AS30KhM, lead-calcium-bearing ASTs30KhM, calcium-bearing ATs30KhM, bismuth-calcium-bearing AVTs30KhM and tin-bearing AО30KhM. Effect of bismuth, calcium, lead, tin and boron nitride inclusions on steel susceptibility to temper brittleness and cold brittleness is studied. Contamination of steels with non-metallic inclusions is estimated. End-quench hardenability curves of the test steel A30KhMAR are obtained. Free-machining Cr-Mo structural steel, containing low-melting elements, has ASTM grain size of the number of 7–8. Hardenability and austenite grain size are satisfactory compared to the base steel 30KhM. Mechanical properties of the test steel in longitudinal direction (ultimate and proof stress, specific elongation, reduction in area, impact toughness, hardness) were also determined. It was found that bismuth, calcium, lead, tin, boron and nitrogen (in the form of boron nitride inclusions) within the studied limits do not have negative effect on mechanical properties of heat-treated ASTs30KhM, ATs30KhM, AVTs30KhM, A30KhMAR and AО30KhM steels, and the values of strength, plasticity and toughness characteristics satisfy the requirements of GOST standards for the base steel 30KhM and lead-bearing steel AS30KhM.

In this paper, a new type of force sensor is presented, able to monitor localized residual stresses on steel surfaces. The principle of operation of the proposed sensor is based on the monitoring of the force exerted between a permanent magnet and the under-test steel which is dependent on the surface permeability of the steel providing a non-hysteretic response. The sensor’s response, calibration, and performance are described followed by a discussion concerning the applications for steel health monitoring.

The research is focused on a novel aluminum and copper-containing heat-resistant steel. The steel was designed by the material performance simulation software JmatPro, performed high-temperature oxidation tests at 650 °C and 700 °C atmospheric conditions, and analyzed the high-temperature oxidation processes and its mechanisms. The phase transtions and surface morphology of the oxide films were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that the equilibrium phase of the test steel is composed of γ phase and δ phase at 1050 °C and tranforms to tempered martensite and δ-Fe mixed structure after heat treatment. The preferential oxidation of Fe and Cr and the internal oxidation of Al occurred during the high temperature oxidation of the test steel. The oxide films were formed with various shape and weak bonding properties after high-temperature oxidation at 650℃. To the contrary, the oxide films more regular and evenly distributed, and has a certain protective effect after high-temperature oxidation at 700 ℃. The oxide films were divided into two layers, Fe2O3 is main element in the outer layer, the inner layer is mainly consisting the oxide of Cr. However, the addition of Cu element can promote the diffusion of Al and Si elements, which is beneficial to the formation of Al2O3 and SiO2 protective oxide films and excellent in high temperature oxidation resistance.
