Abstract Background In 2020, the Nebraska Infection Control Assessment and Promotion program began collaborating with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NE DHHS) and the CDC to distribute infection prevention and control (IPC) training to frontline healthcare professionals (HCPs), focusing on nursing assistants (NAs), dentists, and other groups not traditionally targeted by IPC training. We conducted a learning needs assessment of these workers to plan high-yield curricula for each group. Methods We distributed an online survey to Nebraska’s frontline HCPs via local professional society email lists and the NE DHHS’s weekly newsletter. The survey asked respondents to identify their professional role, practice setting (urban vs suburban vs rural), preferred sources and formats of training, and perceived need for additional training across multiple IPC topics. Results 456 HCPs completed our survey, including 177 NAs, 72 nurses, and 59 dentists; most HCPs practiced in a rural setting (62%). HCPs viewed the CDC as the most trustworthy source of IPC training (92% trusted, vs 71% for local health authorities, 64% for professional societies, and 43% for academic institutions); versus other respondents, NAs had substantially lower trust in all groups except the CDC. Respondents were more often interested in self-paced learning (63%) or interactive discussion with experts (53%) versus peer discussions (40%) or lectures (34%). Compared with other respondents, dentists were least interested in peer discussions (27%) and NAs in lectures (15%). Triage and screening was the only IPC training topic a majority of all respondents (51%) requested, though majorities of nurses (58%) and dentists (51%) also wanted training on environmental cleaning. Hand hygiene (12%) and personal protective equipment use (27%) were the least requested IPC topics, especially among NAs (5% and 18%). Conclusion Nebraska’s frontline healthcare workers express high confidence in the CDC as a source of IPC training and prefer self-paced and expert discussion learning modalities. Key between-group differences indicate that individualizing curricula for NAs, dentists, and other HCPs may improve IPC training quality. Objective: To analyze the adequacy of the training received in the fight against maternal and infant mortality with the training needs of maternal and child health service personnel in Burkina Faso. Methods: The study is of the cross-sectional type, made up of all health professionals from the 576 firstlevel health trainers and 24 Regional Hospital / Medical Center with surgical antenna in eight regions. The data were collected by a questionnaire then verified, compiled and analyzed on the SPSS 20.0 software. For the data analysis, we used two types of analysis: a simple descriptive and a bivariate. Results: The study showed that there is an inadequacy between the training received and the training needs. The main training needs are: integrated management of childhood illness 52%, malaria 46.6%, basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care 46.5% and family planning 45, 5%. Conclusion: In view of these results, it should be remembered that among the main training courses offered, only malaria is in line with the needs of the personnel. Thus, it is recommended that those responsible for the health programs and technical and financial partners to involve professionals in the choice of the training topic so that they can respond effectively to the demands of users of health services.

Research demonstrates that mentorship can significantly improve career success, career satisfaction, and persistence for underrepresented (UR) minority faculty. However, many UR faculty members do not receive the mentorship they need, nor do mentors always possess the range of skills required to guide UR mentees through the unique challenges they face. We developed a 1-year fellowship training program, PROMISED, designed to help mentors promote career self-authorship and leadership among their UR mentees. PROMISED fellows participated in a two-day in-person training to develop career coaching skills, followed by a series of one-month leadership training/mentoring modules. We assessed mentors’ skills at the start and completion of the program. We found that PROMISED fellows reported an increase in perceived skill level in nearly every training topic, with “addressing diversity” demonstrating the most significant change. These results provide evidence that career coaching and leadership training offer an effective supplement to traditional mentor training and that mentors can incorporate these skills effectively into their mentoring practice. Taken together, we believe our data suggest that a program designed to train mentors in coaching and leadership can enhance career satisfaction, persistence, and retention of their UR mentees.

Probabilistic topic modeling has been applied in a variety of industrial applications. Training a high-quality model usually requires a massive amount of data to provide comprehensive co-occurrence information for the model to learn. However, industrial data such as medical or financial records are often proprietary or sensitive, which precludes uploading to data centers. Hence, training topic models in industrial scenarios using conventional approaches faces a dilemma: A party (i.e., a company or institute) has to either tolerate data scarcity or sacrifice data privacy. In this article, we propose a framework named Industrial Federated Topic Modeling (iFTM), in which multiple parties collaboratively train a high-quality topic model by simultaneously alleviating data scarcity and maintaining immunity to privacy adversaries. iFTM is inspired by federated learning, supports two representative topic models (i.e., Latent Dirichlet Allocation and SentenceLDA) in industrial applications, and consists of novel techniques such as private Metropolis-Hastings, topic-wise normalization, and heterogeneous model integration. We conduct quantitative evaluations to verify the effectiveness of iFTM and deploy iFTM in two real-life applications to demonstrate its utility. Experimental results verify iFTM’s superiority over conventional topic modeling.

The focus of this chapter is on insights for and evaluation of if the transfer of learning by training and development professionals will sustain the training field. The chapter begins with the need for a model of learning. Then there is a section on a proposed evaluation of the trainer presentation of a model of learning or training development. The chapter then progresses to a proposed measure of the potential for the transfer of learning and the need to assess self-efficacy with gradations of attainments on the training topic. Finally, the chapter turns to trainee engagement and to having a results orientation for a training program.

Professional development has been identified as a critical component for school nutrition professionals (SNPs) to successfully implement school meal standards in the United States. However, training needs may vary based on different factors. This study examined (1) the topics of highest priority for SNPs; (2) preferred learning methods; (3) where and when trainings should be conducted; and (4) whether responses differ according to important factors including position type, school locale (urban vs. rural), or job experience. Participants completed surveys that included questions on demographics and preferences for learning methods and training topics (n = 492). Descriptive statistics characterized survey responses. Chi square tests assessed differences in learning method and training topic preferences by participant role, locale, and job experience; Cramer’s V assessed the strength of association for each chi square result. Qualitative responses to open-ended questions were analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis method. Nearly all training topic preferences were significantly different (p < 0.001 using Bonferroni method) when stratified by role. Significant differences were also observed for school locale and years of experience, but to a lesser degree. There was less variation in learning method preferences across staff role. Qualitative results (n = 93) identified three key themes related to training needs: role-specific trainings, innovative learning methods, and geographic access. The combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis indicate that professional development for SNPs should mostly be conducted in-person, be easily accessible, and include hands-on activities. Further, training should be tailored by job role and address situational barriers unique to the geographic area.

Abstract Background Tackling childhood obesity is complex and requires a community-based approach implemented in multiple environments. It is known from literature that knowledgeable and skilled professionals are essential to implement such an approach successfully. The aim of the present study was to assess the need for training and support among a global network of programme directors implementing a Community-Based Childhood Obesity Intervention (CBCOI) based on the EPODE approach, in order to assist them in optimising the implementation process. Methods An online survey was sent to 40 programme directors representing programmes implementing a CBCOI based on the EPODE approach. The survey consisted of statements on a 5-point Likert scale and multiple-choice questions about attitude towards and usefulness of training and support, and preferences for some predefined training types and training topics. In total, 22 programme directors responded to the survey (55% response rate). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics to describe the need for support in order to improve successful implementation. Results Respondents strongly agreed that continually updating skills and learning how to make their programmes more effective and sustainable at the start and during the implementation was important. On-site training was preferred most at the commencement of a programme, while a 2-day training course was most valued during implementation. Monitoring, measuring and programme evaluation was identified as the most valuable training topic. Conclusions The results indicate a continuing and significant need for support and training among programme directors implementing a CBCOI. The findings give directions regarding topics and types of training and support in order to improve the implementation process.
