Background: The most common factor that could lead to dryness is the accelerated tear evaporation rate. Controlling the tear evaporation rate is increasingly used as a method to control dry eye complications. The present study explores the effects of different tear supplements formulations on tear film evaporation rate. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of Systane ULTRA and Artelac Advanced eye drops on the tear film evaporation rate. Methods: Fifteen male dry eye subjects were enrolled in the current study. Tear film parameters were observed at several time points post installation (10, 20, 30, and 60 min). The tear film parameters observed in the current study were tear evaporation rate, noninvasive breakup time (NITBUT) and tear meniscus height (TMH). Two visits were required to conduct this study. One visit was conducted to assess the physiological tear film parameters with the use of Systane® ULTRA eye drop. The other visit was conducted to assess tear film parameters with the use of Artelac Advanced eye drop. Results: The mean tear evaporation rate at baseline was 52.58 ± 23.24 g/m2 h. A box plot of tear evaporation showed a reduction in tear film evaporation rate after instillation of Systane eye drop. A drop in tear film evaporation rate of 14% was observed at 20 and 60 min time point after instillation of Systane ULTRA eye drop. A significant increase in NITBUT was found after instillation of Systane ULTRA (P = 0.01) and Artelac Advanced (P = 0.02). Conclusion: The current study indicates a significant improvement in the tear film parameters using both HP-Guar and hyaluronic acid formulations. However, it was apparent that the use of HP-Guar was superior to hyaluronic acid in controlling the tear evaporation rate in dry eye subjects.

A numerical simulation of the intake and compression stroke and fuel spray and combustion in a direct injection compression ignition engine was performed using the Converge CFD software. For this purpose, the Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) k-e RNG model and an n-dodecane kinetic mechanism were used in order to obtain the flow fields in the cylinder and to perform the breakup time analysis of the Kelvin-Helmholtz model in the variables related to the spray and combustion. The turbulent flow inside the cylinder was analysed, obtaining consistent results with experimental pressure data and other research authors. The droplet breakup time is evaluated as a function of the breakup time constant (B1), the initial droplet radius (ro), the wavelength  and the maximum growth rate ( . The results indicate that the numerical method and the models used in this work are adequate to perform subsequent representative combustion analyses with values of B1=7.  It was possible to show that the formation of the species OH is greater for low values of B1. Also, higher values of the breakup time, variables such as temperature, pressure, fuel evaporation, ignition delay, and species formation are affected.

An attempt is made to develop a method for long-term forecasting of the ice breakup time for the Vyatka River basin, to identify the impact of the distribution of sea surface temperature and geopotential height in the informative regions at the levels H100 and H500 over the Northern Hemisphere on the river ice breakup. The location and boundaries of the informative regions in the fields of H100 and H500 were revealed by the discriminant analysis, the EOF expansion coefficients of the fields of anomalies of monthly mean values of H100 and H500 for January and February and the anomalies of monthly mean sea surface temperature in the North Atlantic and Northwest Pacific were used as potential predictors. The stepwise regression analysis allowed deriving good and satisfactory (S/σ = 0.45–0.73) complex prognostic equations for forecasting the ice breakup time for the Vyatka River basin. The essential influence of H100 and H500 geopotential height fields and the spatial distribution of sea surface temperature anomalies in the North Atlantic and Northwest Pacific in January and February on the river ice breakup time is revealed. It is proposed to improve the method by considering the impact of air temperature, maximum ice thickness per winter, and other indirect characteristics on the processes of river ice breakup in the Vyatka River basin. Keywords: ice regime, long-range forecast, river ice breakup, expansion coefficients, geopotential height fields, spring ice phenomena, energy-active zones of the oceans, complex prognostic equation

Abstract Purpose To determine if childhood obesity has an effect on the ocular surface and tear film of children who are afflicted. Methods Patients who had childhood obesity, 85 eyes, and patients who were healthy, 75 eyes, were enrolled in this prospective and comparative study. The tear film breakup time (TF-BUT), tear meniscus area and height (TMA and TMH) values, Schirmer test scores, and ocular surface disease index (OSDI) scores were obtained for all participants. Results The TMH, TMA, TF-BUT, and Schirmer test results were statistically significantly lower in the obesity group (p < 0.001 for all). The children with obesity and insulin resistance had lower TMH, TMA, TF-BUT, and Schirmer test results when compared to the children without insulin resistance (p < 0.05 for all). The body mass index was found to be correlated with the TMH, TMA, TF-BUT, and Schirmer test results (p < 0.001 for all). Conclusion Children with obesity had lower TMA, TMH, TF-BUT, and Schirmer test results than healthy subjects. When insulin resistance was added to obesity, these values were even lower.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To determine intra- and interobserver reliability of a fluorescein stain–based tear film breakup time (TFBUT) test as performed in a clinical environment with and without administration of a topical anesthetic. ANIMALS 21 privately owned dogs. PROCEDURES A randomized study design was used. Two independent observers that commonly perform the TFBUT test in clinical practice read the same description of TFBUT. Observers performed TFBUT testing for each dog before and after topical administration of 0.5% proparacaine solution in 4 testing periods with a 1-hour interval between periods. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) analysis was used to assess inter- and intraobserver test reliability. Linear mixed models were used to assess the main effects of testing period, observer, eye, and presence of ophthalmic disorders and their interactions on TFBUT. RESULTS Mean TFBUT measurements performed by observer 1 and observer 2 were 5.9 seconds and 8.6 seconds, respectively, when adjusted for other effects in the model. Intraobserver ICC was poor for one observer and moderate for the other. Interobserver ICC was poor without use of topical anesthetic and slightly lower when anesthetic was used. Observer and testing period were each significantly associated with TFBUT; the measurements decreased and were more variable after multiple applications of fluorescein stain and proparacaine. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggested tear film stability is negatively affected by topical administration of 0.5% proparacaine solution and repeated applications of fluorescein stain. The TFBUT test as performed in this study had poor to moderate reliability.

This study represents a pioneering work on the extensional magnetorheological properties of human blood analogue fluids loaded with magnetic microparticles. Dynabeads M-270 particles were dispersed in Newtonian and viscoelastic blood analogue fluids at 5% wt. Capillary breakup experiments were performed, with and without the influence of an external magnetic field aligned with the flow direction. The presence of the particles increased the viscosity of the fluid, and that increment was larger when embedded within a polymeric matrix. The application of an external magnetic field led to an even larger increment of the viscosity of the working fluids, as the formation of small aggregates induced an increment in the effective volume fraction of particles. Regarding the liquid bridge stability, the Newtonian blood analogue fluid remained as a Newtonian liquid exhibiting a pinch-off at the breakup time in any circumstance. However, in the case of the viscoelastic blood analogue fluid, the presence of the particles and the simultaneous application of the magnetic field enhanced the formation of the beads-on-a-string structure, as the Ohnesorge number remained basically unaltered, whereas the time of the experiment increased due to its larger viscosity, which resulted in a decrease in the Deborah Number. This result was confirmed with fluids containing larger concentrations of xanthan gum.

The main factor in pathogenesis of postoperative dry eye syndrome (DES) is damage to subbasal nerve plexus and stromal nerve endings. Taking into account the different principles of photorefractive effect on cornea of FemtoLASIK and ReLEx SMILE technologies, we decided on our own clinical experience to evaluate incidence of this undesirable complication. Purpose. Comparative study of frequency and timing of relief of postoperative DES after FemtoLASIK and ReLEx SMILE in patients with myopia. Material and methods. The study involved 32 patients (64 eyes) with varying degrees of myopia. The patients were divided into 2 groups: 1st group - 17 patients (34 eyes) after FemtoLASIK surgery, 2nd group - 15 people (30 eyes) after ReLEx SMILE procedure. Control group consist of 15 patients with comparable myopia who had not undergone refractive surgery was also observed. Patients underwent an assessment of the OSDI index, Norn and Schirmer tests, as well as degree of staining of anterior ocular surface 1, 6 and 12 months after refractive surgery. Results. There was statistically significant difference in total tear production, in tear breakup time (TBUT) and in the OSDI index between study groups 1 month after surgery in favor of ReLEx SMILE procedure. After 6 months, TBUT after FemtoLASIK significantly differed from control values. 12 months after surgery, studied parameters did not differ significantly from control. Conclusion. According to our datas, ReLEx SMILE procedure has lower negative effect on ocular surface compared to FemtoLASIK technique, which is manifested by less pronounced subjective symptoms of DES, as well as their faster relief. Key words: dry eye syndrome, ReLEx SMILE, FemtoLASIK.

In this study, numerical simulations are conducted to investigate droplet breakup in an asymmetric [Formula: see text]-junction microchannel with different cross-section ratios. To this approach, a two-phase model based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method is adopted to study the three-dimensional feature of droplet motion inside [Formula: see text]-junctions. The comparison reveals that the present results are in good agreement with previous studies. The effects of the capillary number (Ca), the non-dimensional droplet length ([Formula: see text]), and the non-dimensional width ratio ([Formula: see text]) on the breakup time and splitting ratio of daughter droplets are studied. Five distinct regimes are observed involving the non-breakup, breakup with tunnel, breakup without tunnel, asymmetric breakup, and sorting. Achieved results indicate that the time of breakup ([Formula: see text]) increases about 15% when the Ca is increased from 0.0134 to 0.0268 (about 100%). It is also found that the mass center of the mother droplet in the primary channel is shifted to a larger wide branch, which facilitates the asymmetric breakup of the droplet in a [Formula: see text]-junction microchannel.
