A clinical study was conducted from May to July 2017 in the outpatient department of Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute (BMARI), Navinna, Sri Lanka to test the antitumor activity of the indigenous drug modality which is used to manage the colon cancer. A forty year old colon cancer patient volunteered to the study. Ethical approval has been taken from the Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo Sri Lanka. Detailed history, clinical examinations and relevant investigations were conducted at BMARI and the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, University of Ruhuna. Three herbal formulations namely SG powder- 5g/day, KY powder -10g/day and A1 powder -10g/day were given for the patient throughout 90 days of study. Serum Interleukin-2 (IL-2), Interleukin-5 (IL-5), Interleukin 17 (IL-17), Interferon (IFN)-ɣ and p53 Upregulated Modulator of Apoptosis (PUMA) were quantified using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) before and after the treatments (after 45 and 90 days) as these cytokines play a significant role in tumor growth control. Tumor marker expression and stool samples were tested before and after treatments (after 45 and 90 days). Symptoms of colon cancer were significantly decreased during the treatment along with changes in tumor markers. According to the results of the ELISA, IL-2, IFN-ɣ and IL-17 concentrations were increased significantly after the treatment and expression level increased in all three cytokines over time indicating the possible control of colon cancer growth by the drug modality. Further investigations are required to evaluate the mechanism of effectiveness of this indigenous drug modality in controlling carcinoma of colon.

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is defined as a cessation of ovarian function before the age of 40 years. It is associated with hypoestrogenism and loss of residual follicles, both of which lead to menstrual abnormalities, pregnancy failures, and decreased health-related quality of life. The prevalence of POI is estimated at 1% in the general population. The risk of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) before the age of 40 years is 1 %. The aetiopathology of premature ovarian insufficiency in the majority of cases is unknown and is termed as spontaneous or idiopathic POI. This is a case with signs and symptoms of POI which was developed after the administration of GnRH agonist drugs as a part of treatment of endometriosis. In this single case study, a female of 33 years having complaints of absence of periods since 6 months treated with Ayurveda treatment with pre and post evaluation. The symptoms of secondary amenorrhoea, hot flashes, vaginal dryness and mood swings were relieved after Ayurveda medications and procedures.

The wounds which fail to progress through a timely sequence of repair or that proceed through the wound healing process without restoring anatomic and functional integrity are referred as chronic non-healing wounds. This study was conducted on a 50-year old male patient with a painful non-healing ulcer on the medial malleolus of the left lower limb caused by the use of hot water bag during harsh winter in Srinagar. The size of the wound was 2x2 cm on assessing the wound profile. The wound was treated with the application of an ointment made with the combination of powder of Astragalus sarcocolla and Honey in equal amounts. The ointment was applied twice a day on the wound for 20 days. After 7 days of daily application, there was a considerable reduction in the size of wound and significant improvement in other symptoms like pain and tenderness. The ulcer was completely healed in a time period of 21 days. The present case reports that, the ointment prepared with Astragalus sarcocolla and Honey is a cost effective treatment for chronic non-healing wound.

This is to report 2 cases experiencing action of indigenous medicine in controlling Covid-19 symptoms in the home setting, without any requirement of hospitalization. Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2), a viral disease by novel coronavirus, impacted 220 countries. Although, numerous attempts have been made for the management and treatment of Covid-19 with various drugs, traditional Ayurveda and Siddha has been widely reported to be effective in treating viral diseases through altering innate adaptive immune response and inhibition of virus attachment to body cells. It is found to inhibit attachment of virus to human cell, hence reducing viral load induced cytokine storm, inflammatory over reactions in the body of patients and inhibition of community spread. The experience of 2 cases reported here showed how senior citizens with various co-morbidities recovered from covid 19 and remained healthy without sequelae or side effects even after 6 months of follow-up. These observations are vital clues for a large population-based study and ongoing clinical trials. Mechanism of action of Sidha and Ayurvedic medicines like Kabasura Kudineer, Sitopladi, Triphala are well published and highly recommended for affecting viral entry and immune regulatory pathways. With no side effects, secondary infections and action, these regimens pave the ways for safe and effective cure for Covid-19.

Psoriasis is a non-contagious, inflammatory disease of the skin that results in itchy, scaly patches on different parts of the body. This disorder causes skin cells to multiply at an abnormally faster rate. The patients depict an unpredictable course of remission and relapse; winter aggravation is common. Conventional treatment involves application of topical ointments, steroids, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs. Homoeopathy is a popular alternative from of treatment in this type of skin conditions. The person is treated as a whole and a suitable constitutional remedy is prescribed, so that there is very less chance of relapse of symptoms. The patient’s general condition, mental status along with the symptoms of psoriasis is considered during finding the similimum remedy. In this case of chronic planter psoriasis an individualised homoeopathic medicine has been prescribed. A female patient suffered from painful cracks, exfoliating scales and slight itching of the soles. This condition is termed as “Planter Psoriasis”. The case came to the surgery OPD of MBHMC&H. We constructed a totality of the patient and based on that a similimum was selected after Repertorization and consultation with the Homoeopathic Materia Medica. The case was well managed with Homoeopathic medicine “Graphites”and there was no remission of symptoms in the following winter.

Infection of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV- 2) which causes novel corona virus disease (COVID-19) has put the world in a medical disaster. Scientists are taking vast efforts to contain the disease by finding a vaccine or clinically proven medicine. Despite the efforts there is no proven medication in any stream of medicine. Covid19 affects respiratory tract and causes pneumonia. Here we are presenting a case series report of patients who had developed Covid19 with subsequent pneumonia and approached for Ayurvedic treatment. All these patients were primarily diagnosed with Covid-19 by RT PCR and SAARS Covid-19 Antigen test. They had subsequently developed viral pneumonia. As per Ayurveda, patients had developed symptoms of vitiation of Vata and Kapha Doshas which affected Rasavaha Srotasa and Pranavaha Srotasa. Patients were treated uniformly with internal Ayurvedic medicines which were prescribed for median duration of 30days and had been analyzed clinically with pre and post chest X-rays. All the symptoms were relieved as well as haziness in chest was also cleared in all patients, which was confirmed with pre and post chest x-rays. This study will be an evidence-based example that Ayurveda can contribute in fight against Covid-19 successfully.
