Decision-making is a complex and important task in software engineering. The current state-of-the-practice is rather non-systematic as it typically relies upon personal judgment and experience without using explicit models. Empirical studies can help but they are costly to conduct and, to some extent, context dependent. Typically it is not efficient or even possible to conduct empirical studies for a large number of context parameter variations. Process simulation offers decision support as well, but currently suffers from a lack of empirical knowledge on the determinants of underlying system dynamics. In this paper we present an assessment of empirical knowledge and simulation techniques for the area of quality assurance planning. There is a strong interdependency between process simulation and empirical models for decision-making in this area: (a) profound empirical knowledge enables process simulation to support decision-making, and (b) the analysis of simulation results can point out situations and factors for which conducting empirical studies would be most worthwhile. This paper discusses critically some of the most important challenges for decision-making in the area of quality assurance planning.

Summary Objectives: The educational activities initiated by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) have had global impacts and influenced national societies and local academic programs in the field of Biomedical and Health Informatics (BMHI). After the successful publication and dissemination of its educational recommendations, IMIA launched an accreditation procedure for educational programs in BMHI. The accreditation procedure was pilot tested by several BMHI academic programs in different countries and continents to obtain a global perspective. Methods: This paper presents an overview of IMIA quality assurance and accreditation procedures along with feedback on issues and problems which emerged during the pilot. Results: It appears that IMIA quality assurance and procedures worked quite well in different countries of Europe, the Middle East, South America, and Asia. These first experiences provided adequate information for adapting, modifying, and optimizing the procedures and finally for the planning of future activities. Conclusions: IMIA accreditation framework comprises a single set of standards that apply at various levels to both academic and professional BMHI programs. The pilot phase confirmed the robustness and generalizability of quality assurance standards and associated procedures on which IMIA accreditation is based at an international level.

In the past few years, Siemens has gained considerable experience using agile processes with several projects of varying size, duration, and complexity. We have observed an emerging pattern of quality assurance goals and practices across these experiences. We will provide background information on the various projects upon which our experiences are based, as well as on the agile processes used for them. Following the brief discussion of goals and practices, this chapter will present the lessons learned from the successes and failures in practicing quality assurance in agile projects. We aim at informing fellow agile developers and researchers about our methods for achieving quality goals, as well as providing an understanding of the current state of quality assurance in agile practices.

The experiences of women in sport continue to necessitate deliberation, reflection, new ways of thinking, and further discourse in the continued pursuit of opportunity and equality. The subsequent and parallel impact on the roles that women play in sport as athletes and leaders are revealed by identifying the complexities and social realities that are vying and contending for relevance. The notion of complexity offers a novel conceptualization revealing contexts and competing points of view that challenge progress and equality for women in sport. Complexity refers to the state of the world assailed by increased amounts of data, facts, tasks, evidence, and arguments that yield uncertainty in the current age and unpredictability for the future. Universal challenges characteristic of complexity include globalization; digital technology; interpenetration of the wider society; participation, access, and equal opportunity; marketization; competition; and quality assurance and assessment. As a result, these old and new realities raise questions related to what we know about the current state of sport, sport experiences of women, and the properties of sport that seem difficult to manage. The purpose of this paper is to offer complexity as a theoretical lens by which to examine sport, discuss the universal and formidable challenges that face sport, and, more specifically, discuss the impact they have on women in sport.

One of the key issues of the EU educational policy is quality assurance. The presented research represents a contribution to solving the issue of quality assurance of informatics education on the tertiary level of education in economy and managerial study fields. Within the research current state of informatics education in selected economy and managerial study programmes was analysed based on students` views and opinions. Necessary research data were collected through questionnaire survey respondents, who were students of the relevant study programmes in the Slovak and Czech Republics. The paper presents in more detail results of the questionnaire part which was focused on finding out how the students evaluate informatics education incorporated in their pre-graduate education considering its relevance to their study and career profiles. Another task of the research was to find out whether the students` evaluations depend on their gender and study specializations, and also whether there are some differences in the evaluations done by the students of the same or at least similar study programmes studying either in Slovakia or in the Czech Republic. As the results showed, students of the economy and managerial study programmes do not connect their future career with the information technologies and they do not have ambitions to be employed in the IT area. But at the same time, they are aware of the fact that the knowledge and skills obtained within their informatics preparation are important for their everyday life and future career. On the other hand, they are not satisfied with the quality of the informatics subjects they are taught. So, to assure the quality of their pre-gradual preparation does not mean only to innovate curricula of the informatics preparation but also to deal with the issues of an efficient transfer of these curricula content to students. Keywords: tertiary education, informatics education, curricula innovation, evaluation of the education, quality assurance, career profiles.

Internationalization of higher education pushes for more intensive regional collaborations as well as student mobility. There are a plethora of studies exploring student mobility patterns, but research on the transformative potential of regional mobility networks is limited. As the most predominant regional network of universities in Southeast Asia, ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) University Network (AUN) commits to boosting student mobility in the region, and thus, can be conceived to be a deliberative space capable of expanding student mobility. This chapter examines the role of AUN in promoting student mobility within the ASEAN region. Indonesia’s engagement is used as a point of entry to assess the extent of policies and programs in encouraging student mobility in the ASEAN region. It shows that AUN has established regional quality assurance and credit transfer systems to promote credit student mobility across AUN member universities. In this regard, the implementation of Indonesian qualification framework has reinforced AUN in the operationalization of credit transfer system across the member universities. Similarly, the existing Indonesian quality assurance body has strengthened AUN in bridging collaborations for student mobility. Thus, the current state of credit student mobility across AUN member universities is shaped by not only by AUN but also Indonesian and higher education institutional policies and systems related to student mobility reflecting the various levels of players in the ASEAN region.
