AbstractSelective laser melted Titanium grade 23 was characterized by low porosity, relatively large surface roughness and pronounced surface texture (i.e. surface grooves orientation). The band/layer microstructure was built of mixed α and β phases. The as printed structure exhibited very high compressive residual stresses with strong anisotropy (i.e., − 512 ± 17 MPa and − 282 ± 14 MPa along the laser scanning direction and along the transverse direction, respectively) and strong fiber crystallographic texture. The latter one is responsible for the anisotropy of hardness in the material. Annealing at 600 °C during four hours significantly removed residual stresses (i.e. to − 14 ± 2.8 MPa) and slightly weakened the texture. Yield strength, 1120 ± 50 MPa, and ultimate tensile strength, 1210 ± 50 MPa, of the annealed material are significantly higher and tensile elongation, 3.9%, lower than for commercial Titanium grade 23. Final mechanical polishing to obtain flat and relatively smooth surface induced desired compression residual stress in the subsurface (i.e., equal to about − 90 MPa). Low absorbed gas contents (oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen) and low porosity of the printed material indicates the correctness of the technology and allows the printed material to be classified as meeting the requirements of ASTM standards for Titanium grade 23. Besides traditional testing techniques, the optical profilometry, X-ray analysis (texture and residual stresses measurement) and infrared absorption method were applied for the product characterization and some potential of these testing methods and usefulness in technological practice was discussed, what can be particularly interesting both to practitioners from industry and researches from scientific laboratories.

In this study we determined average residual stresses in hard nitride PVD AlCrN, TiAlN and TiCN coatings through simultaneous measurement of length variation in thin-walled tubular substrates and of the curvature of plate substrates. A device for measurement of the length of the tube was developed. Inside the depositing chamber the tube and the plate were fixed parallel in the relation to the axis of the rotating cathode. One batch of plate samples was produced by deposition on front surface (facing the cathode) and the other batch, by deposition on back surface (with back to the cathode). The cross-sectional microstructure and thickness of the coatings were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thicknesses of the coatings deposited on front and back surfaces of the plates and on the tube were significantly different. The values of average compressive residual stresses, determined by both methods, were very high irrespective of coating thickness. It was found that the values of compressive residual stresses in the coating were dependent on the shape of the substrate and on its position in the relation to the axis of the rotating cathode.

Automotive components manufacturers use the 5160 steel in leaf and coil springs. The industrial heat treatment process consists in austenitizing followed by the oil quenching and tempering process. Typically, compressive residual stresses are induced by shot peening on the surface of automotive springs to bestow compressive residual stresses that improve the fatigue resistance and increase the service life of the parts after heat treatment. In this work, a high-speed quenching was used to achieve compressive residual stresses on the surface of AISI/SAE 5160 steel samples by producing high thermal gradients and interrupting the cooling in order to generate a case-core microstructure. A special laboratory equipment was designed and built, which uses water as the quenching media in a high-speed water chamber. The severity of the cooling was characterized with embedded thermocouples to obtain the cooling curves at different depths from the surface. Samples were cooled for various times to produce different hardened case depths. The microstructure of specimens was observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to estimate the magnitude of residual stresses on the surface of the specimens. Compressive residual stresses at the surface and sub-surface of about −700 MPa were obtained.

Knowledge of the relationships between thermomechanical process loads and the resulting modifications in the surface layer enables targeted adjustments of the required surface integrity independent of the manufacturing process. In various processes with thermomechanical impact, thermal and mechanical loads act simultaneously and affect each other. Thus, the effects on the modifications are interdependent. To gain a better understanding of the interactions of the two loads, it is necessary to vary thermal and mechanical loads independently. A new process of laser-combined deep rolling can fulfil exactly this requirement. The presented findings demonstrate that thermal loads can support the generation of residual compressive stresses to a certain extent. If the thermal loads are increased further, this has a negative effect on the surface layer and the residual stresses are shifted in the direction of tension. The results show the optimum range of thermal loads to further increase the compressive residual stresses in the surface layer and allow to gain a better understanding of the interactions between thermal and mechanical loads.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a relatively new manufacturing method that can produce complex geometries and optimized shapes with less process steps. In addition to distinct microstructural features, residual stresses and their formation are also inherent to AM components. AM components require several post-processing steps before they are ready for use. To change the traditional manufacturing method to AM, comprehensive characterization is needed to verify the suitability of AM components. On very demanding corrosion atmospheres, the question is does AM lower or eliminate the risk of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) compared to welded 316L components? This work concentrates on post-processing and its influence on the microstructure and surface and subsurface residual stresses. The shot peening (SP) post-processing levelled out the residual stress differences, producing compressive residual stresses of more than −400 MPa in the AM samples and the effect exceeded an over 100 µm layer below the surface. Post-processing caused grain refinement and low-angle boundary formation on the sample surface layer and silicon carbide (SiC) residue adhesion, which should be taken into account when using the components. Immersion tests with four-point-bending in the heated 80 °C magnesium chloride solution for SCC showed no difference between AM and reference samples even after a 674 h immersion.

Shot peening is an effective method of improving fatigue performance of machine parts in the industry by producing a thin surface layer of compressive residual stresses that prevents crack initiation and retards crack growth during service. Nondestructive evaluation of the prevailing compressive residual stresses in the shallow subsurface layer is realized by the critically refracted longitudinal (Lcr) waves. This paper presents experimental data obtained on SMAT (surface mechanical attrition treatment) steel alloy S355 sample. Comparative travel-time shows that there are statistically significant differences in treated and untreated specimen. With knowledge of the acoustoelastic constants which are obtained by a test calibration, the experimental data indicates that compressive residual stresses are distributed near subsurface (hundreds of micron). These stress results show that the Lcr technique is efficient for evaluation of residual stresses after the surface treatment.

In this work, the effect of steel grade on the fatigue resistance of deep-rolled crankshafts is analysed. In the first part of this paper, the mechanisms leading to the increase of the fatigue resistance brought by the deep rolling treatment, is presented. This reinforcement is mainly linked to crack arrest due both to a decrease of the in-depth stress concentration factor and to remaining compressive residual stresses induced by the deep rolling. In a second part, an analytical model of residual stresses generation by deep-rolling and fatigue is presented. In this model the low cyclic fatigue behaviour of the steel is taken into account, and the residual stress stability with bending fatigue cycling can be predicted. After a presentation of the experimental validation on two different microstructures (baintic and ferrito- perlitic), this model is used for analysing the main parameters of the deep-rolling process and fatigue resistance.

The paper deals with the effect of different shot peening (SP) treatment conditions on the ENAW 7075-T651 aluminium alloy. Suitable residual stress profile increases the applicability and life cycle of mechanical parts, treated by shot peening. The objective of the research was to establish the optimal parameters of the shot peening treatment of the aluminium alloy in different precipitation hardened states with regard to residual stress profiles in dynamic loading. Main deformations and main residual stresses were calculated on the basis of electrical resistance. The resulting residual stress profiles reveal that stresses throughout the thin surface layer of all shot peened specimens are of compressive nature. The differences can be observed in the depth of shot peening and the profile of compressive residual stresses. Under all treatment conditions, the obtained maximum value of compressive residual stress ranges between -200 MPa and -300 MPa at a depth between 250 μm and 300 μm. Comparison of different temperature-hardened aluminium alloys shows that changes in the Almen intensity values have greater effect than coverage in the depth and profile of compressive residual stresses. Positive stress ratio of R=0.1 was selected. Wöhler curves were determined in the areas of maximum bending loads between 30 - 65 % of material's tensile strength, measured at thinner cross-sections of individual specimens. The results of material fatigue testing differ from the level of shot peening on the surface layer.

AbstractSilicon carbide is desirable for many nuclear applications, making it necessary to understand how it deforms after irradiation. Ion implantation combined with nanoindentation is commonly used to measure radiation-induced changes to mechanical properties; hardness and modulus can be calculated from load–displacement curves, and fracture toughness can be estimated from surface crack lengths. Further insight into indentation deformation and fracture is required to understand the observed changes to mechanical properties caused by irradiation. This paper investigates indentation deformation using high-resolution electron backscatter diffraction (HR-EBSD) and Raman spectroscopy. Significant differences exist after irradiation: fracture is suppressed by swelling-induced compressive residual stresses, and the plastically deformed region extends further from the indentation. During focused ion beam cross-sectioning, indentation cracks grow, and residual stresses are modified. The results clarify the mechanisms responsible for the modification of apparent hardness and apparent indentation toughness values caused by the compressive residual stresses in ion-implanted specimens.

Residual stresses generated in milling process affect the performance of machined components. Milling residual stresses correlate closely with the cutting parameters. In this paper, the generation and distribution of surface residual stresses in milling of aluminum alloy 7050-T7451 was investigated. The cutting speed changes from 300m/min to 3000m/min. In the experiments, the residual stresses on the surface of specimen are detected by X-ray diffraction technique. The result shows that compressive residual stresses are generated when cutting speed is under 500 m/min. In feed and its orthogonal direction, the effect of cutting speed and feed rate on residual stresses is similar. The formation of the residual stresses can be explained by thermo-mechanical coupling effects.

Abstract. The potential of high-resolution repeat DEMs was investigated for glaciological applications including periglacial features (e.g. rock glaciers). It was shown that glacier boundaries can be delineated using airborne LIDAR-DEMs as a primary data source and that information on debris cover extent could be extracted using multi-temporal DEMs. Problems and limitations are discussed, and accuracies quantified. Absolute deviations of airborne laser scanning (ALS) derived glacier boundaries from ground-truthed ones were below 4 m for 80% of the ground-truthed values. Overall, we estimated an accuracy of +/−1.5% of the glacier area for glaciers larger than 1 km2. The errors in the case of smaller glaciers did not exceed +/−5% of the glacier area. The use of repeat DEMs in order to obtain information on the extent, characteristics and activity of rock glaciers was investigated and discussed based on examples.
