AbstractIncreasing evidence indicates that voluntary actions can modulate the subjective time experience of its outcomes to optimize dynamic interaction with the external environment. In the present study, using a temporal reproduction task where participants reproduced the duration of an auditory stimulus to which they were previously exposed by performing different types of voluntary action, we examined how the subjective time experience of action outcomes changed with voluntary action types. Two experiments revealed that the subjective time experience of action outcomes was compressed, compared with physical time, if the action was performed continuously (Experiment 1), possibly enhancing the experience of controlling the action outcome, or if the action was added an extra task-unrelated continuous action (Experiment 2), possibly reflecting different underlying mechanisms from subjective time compression induced by the task-related continuous action. The majority of prior studies have focused on the subjective time experience of action outcomes when actions were performed voluntarily or not, and no previous study has examined the effects of differences in voluntary action types on the subjective time experience of action outcomes. These findings may be useful in situations in which people wish to intentionally compress their own time experience of daily events through their voluntary actions.

Timing is an integral part of physical activities. Walking as a routine form of physical activity might affect interval timing primarily in two different ways within the pacemaker–accumulator timing-theoretic framework: (1) by increasing the speed of the pacemaker due to its physiological effects; (2) by decreasing attention to time and consequently slowing the rate of temporal integration by serving as a secondary task. In order to elucidate the effect of movement on subjective time, in two different experiments we employed a temporal reproduction task conducted on the treadmill under four different encoding–decoding conditions: (1) encoding and reproducing (decoding) the duration while standing (rest); (2) encoding the duration at rest and reproducing it while moving: (3) both encoding and reproducing the duration while moving; and (4) encoding the duration while moving and reproducing it at rest. In the first experiment, participants were tested either in the 4 or the 8 km/h movement condition, whereas in the second experiment a larger sample was tested only in the 4 km/h movement condition. Data were de-trended to control for long-term performance drifts. In Experiment 1, overall durations encoded at rest and reproduced during motion were under-reproduced whereas durations encoded during motion and reproduced at rest were over-reproduced only in the 8 km/h condition. In Experiment 2, the same results were observed in the 4 km/h condition with a larger sample size. These effects on timing behavior provide support for the clock speed-driven effect of movement and contradicts the predictions of attention-based mediation.

Understanding the structure and dynamics of the various hydrogen forms has been a subject of numerous studies. Protons (H+) and molecular hydrogen (H2) in the cell are critical in a wide variety of processes. A new cancer treatment uses H2, a biologically inactive gas. Due to its small molecular weight, H2 can rapidly penetrate cell membranes and reach subcellular components to protect nuclear DNA and mitochondria. H2 reduces oxidative stress, exerts anti-inflammatory effects, and acts as a modulator of apoptosis. Exogenous H2, administered by inhalation, drinking H2-rich water, or injecting H2-rich saline solution, is a protective therapy that can be used in multiple diseases, including cancer. In particle therapy, cyclotrons and synchrotrons are the accelerators currently used to produce protons. Proton beam radiotherapy (PBT) offers great promise for the treatment of a wide variety of cancers due to the sharp decrease in the dose of radiation at a defined point. In these conditions, H2 and different types of H2 donors may represent a novel therapeutic strategy in cancer treatment.

PurposeThis study develops a framework to examine how, why and when different traits of employee curiosity affect service creativity by considering the roles of knowledge sharing and task autonomy.Design/methodology/approachTo reduce common method bias, this work separated the variables investigated into three parts, each of which was randomly used to collect data at three different periods. A total of 822 matched questionnaires obtained from frontline employees of service firms provided useable data for hypothesis tests. A moderated mediation approach was employed to analyse the data.FindingsResults are as follows: (1) Deprivation sensitivity, joyous exploration and social curiosity have positive effects on knowledge collecting (KC) and knowledge donating (KD). (2) KD mediates the relationships between the three curiosity traits and service creativity. (3) Task autonomy enhances and suppresses the mediating effects of KC and KD, respectively, on the curiosity–service creativity relationship.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has two main research implications: First, as different types (traits) of employee curiosity have different effects on service creativity, a single-dimensional view of employee curiosity may mask the differences of individual dimension and lead to a oversimplified conclusion. Second, lifting the vein from employee curiosity to service creativity has to consider the roles of knowledge sharing and task autonomy.Originality/valueThis research is the first to contribute to the service innovation literature by revealing the underlying mechanisms through which different types of employee curiosity affect service creativity and uncovering the moderating roles of task autonomy in the process mechanisms.

In the domain of aesthetic preference, previous studies focused primarily on exploring the factors that influence aesthetic preference while neglecting to investigate whether aesthetic preference affects other psychological activities. This study sought to expand our understanding of time perception by examining whether aesthetic preference in viewing paintings influenced its perceived duration. Participants who preferred Chinese paintings ( n = 20) and participants who preferred western paintings ( n = 21) were recruited to complete a temporal reproduction task that measured their time perception of Chinese paintings and of western paintings. The results showed that participants who preferred Chinese paintings exhibited longer time perceptions for Chinese paintings than for western paintings, while the participants who preferred western paintings exhibited longer time perceptions for western paintings than for Chinese paintings. These results suggested that aesthetic preference could modulate our perceived duration of painting presentation. Specifically, individuals perceive longer painting presentation durations when exposed to the stimuli matching their aesthetic preferences.

The goal of my keynote article, “Bilingualism and Cognition” (Valian, 2014), was to resolve the inconsistencies in effects of bilingualism on executive functions, whether the individuals were children, young adults, or old people. To summarize (and sharpen) my argument: 1.Especially in children and young adults, benefits of bilingualism for executive functions are not reliable. In old people, there are benefits for executive functions but contradictory results on delay of cognitive impairment, depending on whether studies are retrospective or prospective.2.All experiences that have benefits for executive functions and aging – and there are many – yield inconsistent effects. Bilingualism is not alone.3.Three reasons for inconsistencies in bilingualism and other experiences are: a.Executive function and cognitive reserve are broad cover terms for a variety of mechanisms, most of which are ill-understood. Because we mean different things by ‘executive function’ from one experiment to the next, we can both think we don't have an effect when we do and think we have an effect when we don’t.b.Tasks are impure: apparently similar tasks measure different aspects of executive function and measure other aspects of cognition as well. Because we lack a good analysis of tasks, we too often do not know what we are measuring. I encourage readers to examine the demos in the supplementary materials of the keynote article to see for themselves what the tasks are like.c.Individuals engage in many different activities that may be on a par with bilingualism in their benefits.4.Different types of bilingual experience are unlikely to explain the variability of findings, given the inconsistencies in extant data on varieties of bilingualism.5.There is a benefit of bilingualism, but bilingualism competes with other sources of benefits. Especially for children and young adults, whose daily lives are full of cognitively enriching and challenging experiences, we should expect variability in effects of being bilingual.6.The way forward is to focus on underlying mechanisms.

The roles chronological age and gender play in subjective time experience were explored in a sample of 294 adult men and women. Subjective time experience (STE: the difference between subjective age and chronological age) was found to vary widely among individuals, with some being “accurate” (SA = CA), and others either “retarded” (SA < CA) or “advanced” (SA > CA). Males were more retarded in STE than females at every point in the lifespan, and patterns of age differences in adulthood differed for the two sexes as well. The results suggest that chronological age may play a key role in transitions in STE, and that chronological age is more significant in the STE of women than in the STE of men.

Signal-detection procedures were used in three experiments to examine sensitivity and bias in time judgments and to evaluate individual differences in timing. The task required subjects to judge whether visual stimuli were presented for a certain target duration (the ‘signal’) or for a slightly longer duration. In experiment 1, subjects performed versions of the task involving both short (2 s) and long (12 s) target stimuli. Analyses of sensitivity and bias measures ( d' and β) provided evidence for consistency in timing performance within individuals. In experiment 2, subjects were tested on a detection task with 5, 10, or 15 s targets, followed by a temporal-reproduction task involving stimulus durations ranging from 3 to 17 s. Subjects with high temporal sensitivity showed less error in their reproductions than subjects with low temporal sensitivity. In experiment 3, subjects were pretested on a detection task with a 12 s target and then performed a temporal-production task where they attempted to generate a series of 12 s intervals under either control or informational feedback conditions. Feedback improved accuracy and reduced variability in temporal productions. However, the low-temporal-sensitivity subjects were more variable in their responses under both conditions than were the high-sensitivity subjects. The results point to the utility of a temporal-signal-detection task both as a means for studying individual differences in timing and as a pretesting technique for assigning subjects to high-sensitivity and low-sensitivity groups to reduce error in time-judgment data.

It has been claimed that when subjects observe differently-scaled model environments their experience of temporal duration is compressed relative to standard clock time in the same proportion as the scale of the model being observed. A series of experiments is reported in which subjects made judgements of duration while observing model environments of different scale. In each experiment, two similar model environments of different scale were presented. Three different kinds of model were used: scale model railways, sitting-room models, and abstract nonrepresentional models. Despite considerable individual variability, significant effects were obtained. Smaller scale was, up to a point, related to a compression of subjective time relative to clock time, although the effect was nowhere near as great as that previously reported. Also, when scale was reduced beyond a certain point the effect on judgements of duration was eliminated, or even reversed. It is suggested that the effect of time compression is related to differences in the density of the information to be processed in environments of different scale, and that there may be an optimum value for information density related both to the scale and to the type of environment.


The article concerns the explication of anthropological concept of the philosophy of dialogue. Concepts of philosophers of dialogue are explored: Martin Buber's "sphere of between", Ferdinand Ebner's "pneumatology", Franz Rosenzweig's "linguistic thinking" and Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy "grammatical method". Changes in the perception of language under the influence of a new concept of communication are shown. Language acquires an existential dimension, becomes a way of overcoming the loneliness of consciousness, the space of the emergence, existence and manifestation of new philosophical meanings. Search for ways of communication with others and the world in general leads to the construction of a new concept of man with a renewed concept of freedom and the meaning of life. The philosophy of dialogue opposes the model of monological thinking, which changes the perception of the anthropological foundations. The true depth of consciousness opens only in communication (according to Ebner), therefore, it is the language which determines the existence; Rosenzweig’s "new thinking" begins with the recognition of the primacy of communication between people, God and the world; Rosenstock-Huessy’s "grammatical method" provides an opportunity to analyze various conditions and problems of society on the basis of analysis of types of speech; Buber’s «dialogic communication» goes beyond the boundaries of language and becomes a definite state of consciousness. Thus, freedom and identity formation of an individual are related to the individual’s communication with Others. It is also shown that anthropological space transformation is also influenced by the perception of subjective time. The article features temporal accentuation of philosophy of dialogue and states that the theory of language is associated with the category of time, while they both influence the anthropological concept of dialogical philosophy. The philosophy of dialogue emphasizes present time, which is connected with communication held "here and now". The article shows that the past and future in the philosophy of dialogue are connected with different forms of language, different types of communication. The word and language in the philosophy of dialogue become not just categories of poetics, but anthropological categories which influence changes of ideas about freedom, personality formation, communication and sense of subjective time.

AbstractBiomineralization is the process by which organisms form mineralized tissues with hierarchical structures and excellent properties, including the bones and teeth in vertebrates. The underlying mechanisms and pathways of biomineralization provide inspiration for designing and constructing materials to repair hard tissues. In particular, the formation processes of minerals can be partly replicated by utilizing bioinspired artificial materials to mimic the functions of biomolecules or stabilize intermediate mineral phases involved in biomineralization. Here, we review recent advances in biomineralization-inspired materials developed for hard tissue repair. Biomineralization-inspired materials are categorized into different types based on their specific applications, which include bone repair, dentin remineralization, and enamel remineralization. Finally, the advantages and limitations of these materials are summarized, and several perspectives on future directions are discussed.
