Abstract Smoking epidemics have increased the number of smokers around the globe. Moreover, the world urbanization steadily increases. As a result, environmental problems are exacerbated by the proliferation of combustible and electronic cigarettes and the cement invasion of permeable spaces. Therefore, sustainable construction/building materials that use recycled ingredients like cigarette filters are worth considering. This paper assesses and compares, for the first time in the literature, the chemical and mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete substituted by 0, 10, 15, and 20% by weight of cigarette filters. Results have shown that the higher the amount of cigarette filters, the lower the mechanical strength. However, the results also indicate that the geopolymerization reaction is still in progress as the compressive strength of all aged samples is still increasing.

The purpose of this research is to study the effects of quarry rock dust (QRD) and steel fibers (SF) inclusion on the fresh, mechanical, and microstructural properties of fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (SG)-based geopolymer concrete (GPC) exposed to elevated temperatures. Such types of ternary mixes were prepared by blending waste materials from different industries, including QRD, SG, and FA, with alkaline activator solutions. The multiphysical models show that the inclusion of steel fibers and binders can enhance the mechanical properties of GPC. In this study, a total of 18 different mix proportions were designed with different proportions of QRD (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) and steel fibers (0.75% and 1.5%). The slag was replaced by different proportions of QRD in fly ash, and SG-based GPC mixes to study the effect of QRD incorporation. The mechanical properties of specimens, i.e., compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength, were determined by testing cubes, cylinders, and prisms, respectively, at different ages (7, 28, and 56 days). The specimens were also heated up to 800 °C to evaluate the resistance of specimens to elevated temperature in terms of residual compressive strength and weight loss. The test results showed that the mechanical strength of GPC mixes (without steel fibers) increased by 6–11%, with an increase in QRD content up to 15% at the age of 28 days. In contrast, more than 15% of QRD contents resulted in decreasing the mechanical strength properties. Incorporating steel fibers in a fraction of 0.75% by volume increased the compressive, tensile, and flexural strength of GPC mixes by 15%, 23%, and 34%, respectively. However, further addition of steel fibers at 1.5% by volume lowered the mechanical strength properties. The optimal mixture of QRD incorporated FA-SG-based GPC (QFS-GPC) was observed with 15% QRD and 0.75% steel fibers contents considering the performance in workability and mechanical properties. The results also showed that under elevated temperatures up to 800 °C, the weight loss of QFS-GPC specimens persistently increased with a consistent decrease in the residual compressive strength for increasing QRD content and temperature. Furthermore, the microstructure characterization of QRD blended GPC mixes were also carried out by performing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).

This paper presents the result of study on using volcanic ash which obtained from Mount Kelud as fly ash replacement material to produce geopolymer concrete. Test was conducted on geopolymer concrete mixture with 0%, 25%, 50% and 100% fly ash replacement with Kelud volcanic ash. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and Sodium Silicate (Na2SiO3) were applied as alkaline activator. The mechanical properties was assessed by compressive strength while workability of fresh concrete by slump test. Producing geopolymer concrete with volcanic ash is possible with maximum replacement of up to 50%. Research and development on eco-friendly material such as volcanic ash is very useful to help reconstruction process of volcanic disaster around the world.

Abstract Geopolymer concrete (GPC) is a Sustainable construction material, in which cement is completely replaced by Fly ash as binder. To control emission of CO2 during the production of cement, it is advisable to use alternate sustainable Cementitious material. The development of GPC become a major interest to use for in-situ and precast applications. The present study aims to develop High calcium fly ash based GPC with aid of alkaline liquids such as sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3). Different molarities i.e 4M, 6M, 8M and 10M are used to develop the GPC under ambient and oven curing process. In the present investigation the Fresh properties of GPC and Mechanical properties such as compressive strength, Tensile strength, Flexural strength and Elastic modulus of GPC are investigated. An increase of alkaline activator in in the mix decreased the workability of GPC. The developed GPC mix of 8M is found to be the optimum for gain in compressive strength. A polynomial relationship is obtained for the mechanical properties of GPC developed under ambient and oven curing. The development cost of GPC can be reduced up to 11.25 to 16.5% as compared with conventional concrete grade of M25.

The use of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) by-products as aluminosilicate precursors in geopolymer binders has attracted significant interest from researchers in recent years owing to their high alumina and silica contents. Introduced in this study is the use of geopolymer concrete comprising FCC residue combined with fly ash as the requisite source of aluminosilicate. Fly ash was replaced with various FCC residue contents ranging from 0–100% by mass of binder. Results from standard testing methods showed that geopolymer concrete rheological properties such as yield stress and plastic viscosity as well as mechanical properties including compressive strength, flexural strength, and elastic modulus were affected significantly by the FCC residue content. With alkali liquid to geopolymer solid ratios (AL:GS) of 0.4 and 0.5, a reduction in compressive and flexural strength was observed in the case of geopolymer concrete with increasing FCC residue content. On the contrary, geopolymer concrete with increasing FCC residue content exhibited improved strength with an AL:GS ratio of 0.65. Relationships enabling estimation of geopolymer elastic modulus based on compressive strength were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that the final product from the geopolymerization process consisting of FCC residue was similar to fly ash-based geopolymer concrete. These observations highlight the potential of FCC residue as an aluminosilicate source for geopolymer products.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the behavior of fly ash-, bottom ash-, and blended fly and bottom ash-based geopolymer concrete (GPC) cured at ambient temperature. Four bathes of GPC were manufactured to investigate the influence of the fly ash-to-bottom ash mass ratio on the microstructure, compressive strength and elastic modulus of GPC. All the results indicate that the mass ratio of fly ash-to-bottom ash significantly affects the microstructure and mechanical properties of GPCs

Concrete building safety of fire is better than other building materials such as wood, plastic, and steel,because it is incombustible and emitting no toxic fumes during high temperature exposure. However,the deterioration of concrete because of high temperature exposure will reduce the concrete strength.Mechanical properties such as compressive strength and modulus of elasticity are absolutely corruptedduring and after the heating process. This paper aims to investigate mechanical properties of concrete(especially compressive strength and modulus of elasticity) with various water-cement ratio afterconcrete suffered by high temperature exposure of 500oC.This research conducted experimental method and analytical method. The experimental methodproduced concrete specimens with specifications: (1) specimen’s dimension is 150 mm x 300 mmconcrete cylinder; (2) compressive strength design, f’c = 22.5 MPa; (3) water-cement ratio variation =0.4, 0.5, and 0.6. All specimens are cured in water for 28 days. Some specimens were heated for 1hour with high temperature of 500oC in huge furnace, and the others that become specimen-controlwere unheated. All specimens, heated and unheated, were evaluated by compressive test.Experimental data was analyzed to get compressive strength and modulus of elasticity values. Theanalytical method aims to calculate modulus of elasticity of concrete from some codes and to verifythe experimental results. The modulus elasticity of concrete is calculated by 3 expressions: (1) SNI03-2847-1992 (which is the same as ACI 318-99 section 8.5.1), (2) ACI 318-95 section 8.5.1, and (3)CEB-FIP Model Code 1990 Section 2.1.4.2.The experimental and analytical results found that: (1) The unheated specimens with water-cementratio of 0.4 have the greatest value of compressive strength, while the unheated specimens with watercementratio of 0.5 gets the greatest value of modulus of elasticity. The greatest value of compressivestrength of heated specimens provided by specimens with water-cement ratio of 0.5, while the heatedspecimens with water-cement ratio of 0.4 gets the greatest value of modulus of elasticity, (2) Allheated specimens lose their strength at high temperature of 500oC, (3) The analytical result shows thatmodulus of elasticity calculated by expression III has greater values compares to expression I and II,but there is only little difference value among those expressions, and (4)The variation of water-cementratio of 0.5 becomes the optimum value.

Pumice, cements (CEM I- and CEM II-type), waste fly and bottom ashes (IFA, GBA, and BBA) supplied from international companies were used to produce lightweight building materials, and physical-mechanical properties of these materials were determined. Axial compressive strength (ACS) values were found above the standards of 4 and 8 MPa (Bims Concrete (BC) 40 and 80 kgf/cm2 class) for cemented (CEM I) pumice-based samples. On the contrary, the ACS values of the pumice-based cemented (CEM II) samples could not be reached to these standards. Best ACS results (compatible with BC80) from these cemented lightweight material samples produced with the ashes were found in 50% mixing ratio as 10.6, 13.2, and 20.5 MPa for BBA + CEM I, GBA + CEM II, and IFA + CEM I, respectively, and produced with pumice were found as 8.4 MPa (same value) for GBA + pumice + CEM II (in 25% mixing ratio), BBA + pumice + CEM I (in 100% mixing ratio), and pumice + IFA + CEM I (in 100% mixing ratio), respectively. According to the results, cemented ash-based lightweight building material produced with and without pumice could widely be used for constructive purposes. As a result of this study, an important input to the ecosystem has been provided using waste ashes, whose storage constitutes a problem.

Improving the efficiency and quality of construction mainly depends on the cost of building materials, which is about 55–65% of total capital-construction costs. The study aimed to obtain geopolymer fine-grained concrete with improved quality characteristics that meet the construction field’s sustainable development criteria and that have environmental friendliness, economic efficiency, and advantages over competing analogues. The dependences of strength characteristics on various compositions of geopolymer concrete were obtained. It was found that the most effective activator is a composition of NaOH and Na2SiO3 with a ratio of 1:2. The increase in the indicators of the obtained geopolymer concrete from the developed composition (4A) in relation to the base control (1X) was 17% in terms of compressive strength and 24% in tensile strength in bending. Polynomial equations were obtained showing the dependence of the change in the strength characteristics of geopolymer concrete on the individual influence of each of the activators. A significant effect of the composition of the alkaline activator on the strength characteristics of geopolymer fine-grained concrete was noted. The optimal temperature range of heat treatment of geopolymer concrete samples, contributing to the positive kinetics of compressive strength gain at the age of 28 days, was determined. The main technological and recipe parameters for obtaining geopolymers with the desired properties, which meet the ecology requirements and are efficient from the point of view of economics, were determined.

Nowadays, construction sector is focusing in developing sustainable, green and eco-friendly building materials. Natural fibre is growingly being used in composite materials. This paper provides utilization of cellulose fibres as reinforcing agent into cement composites/plasters. Provided cellulosic fibres coming from various sources as bleached wood pulp and recycled waste paper fibres. Differences between cellulosic fibres are given by their physical characterization, chemical composition and SEM micrographs. Physical and mechanical properties of fibre-cement composites with fibre contents 0.2; 0.3and 0.5% by weight of filler and binder were investigated. Reference sample without fibres was also produced. The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of cellulose fibres on the final properties (density, water absorbability, coefficient of thermal conductivity and compressive strength) of the fibrecement plasters after 28 days of hardening. Testing of plasters with varying amount of cellulose fibres (0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 wt. %) has shown that the resulting physical and mechanical properties depend on the amount, the nature and structure of the used fibres. Linear dependences of compressive strength and thermal conductivity on density for plasters with cellulosic fibres adding were observed.

The Earth Summit 1997 in Kyoto (Japan), industrialized countries agreed to reduce gas emissions by 21% to avoid global warming due to greenhouse effect with the release of CO2 into the air. From the research result, cement industry sector all over the world contributes about 8 - 10% of total CO2 emission. This number is quite high and if there is not a special action to reduce, CO2 emissions will continue to increase along with the rapid development of infrastructure in various parts of the world including in Indonesia. To support greenhouse effect reduction efforts due to CO2 emissions and environmental conservation, civil engineers in the world are taking steps to achieve Sustainable Concrete Technology, in order to create “Green Concrete”. For that reason in the direction of “Green Concrete”, innovation is needed to reduce or replace cement in the concrete mixing. The ash waste electrical power generating plants of fly ash is a material containing many SiO2 and Al2O3 which can be used to replace the overall of cement in concrete. Geopolymer concrete is a fly ash-based concrete that replaces the entire cement in its manufacture. Workability in mixing geopolymer concrete is very low, due to the rapid reaction of the alkaline solution when it reacts with fly ash. To improve the workability can be added water at the time of mixing. The fly ash used in the mixing from the Paiton power plant in East Java with grain size 12.06 μm with round granules and chemical composition of fly ash containing SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 with a total of 75.151%. The planned compressive strength of the concrete is 45 MPa, with a variation of 8M, 12M and 16M NaOH molarity and the ratio of NaOH and Na2SiO3 is 1. Addition of water in concrete mixing with variations of 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5 and 25 liters / m3. The results of this study indicate that the more addition of water in the manufacture of geopolymer concrete can also increase the value of slump, but the excessive addition of water will result in a decrease in the compressive strength of the concrete caused by a decrease in the concentration of the alkaline solution. High molarity values will require additional water to reach the same slump value compared to lower NaOH molarity. With the same mix design, the optimal compressive strength at 8M NaOH was 48.18 MPa with 17.5 liters/m3 of water added with a slump of 12 cm, for 12M NaOH the optimal compressive strength was 51.65 MPa with the addition of 20 liter/m3 with 10 cm slump, while for 16M NaOH the optimum compressive strength is 59.70 MPa with 22.5 liters/m3 of water added with a 5 cm slump. The higher the NaOH molarity will result in a higher compressive strength value and geopolymer concrete compressive strength at early age is higher than conventional concrete.
