Although direct engineering of animal and plant genomes only became possible from the 1970s onwards, people have been indirectly changing other species’ genetic make-up for thousands of years. This is because with the agricultural revolution that began 12,000 years ago, human beings began selecting particular variants of a species, and cultivating them as crops or breeding them as farm animals, and in the process altered a species’ genome over time. In fact this process began even earlier, with the domestication of the wolf, which eventually became our most faithful companion, the dog. And now modern genome analysis techniques are making it possible to understand how at the genetic level a dog or cat differs from their wild ancestors, or how wild boars became pigs, or wild grass could over time give rise to wheat, barley, or rice. In medical research, scientists realised that understanding how genes work could be helped by studying naturally occurring mutants. By studying how mutations affected an organism such as a fruit fly,genes involved in particular functions could be identified. A breakthrough was made when it was realised that treatment of fruit flies with X-rays dramatically increased the numbers of mutants. Today, X-rays and chemical treatments can be used to create mutant mice, and studies of such mice has identified genetic links with conditions such as congenital deafness.

Abstract Joint action among human beings is characterized by using elaborate cognitive feats, such as representing the mental states of others about a certain state of affairs. It is still debated how these capacities evolved in the hominid lineage. I suggest that the consolidation of a shared practice over time can foster the predictability of other’s behavior. This might facilitate the evolutionary passage from inferring what others might know by simply seeing them and what they are viewing towards a mutual awareness of each other’s beliefs. I will examine the case for cooperative hunting in one chimpanzee community and argue that it is evidence that they have the potential to achieve common ground, suggesting that the consolidation of a practice might have supported the evolution of higher social cognition in the hominid lineage.

While producing malformations in the mouse foetus with X-rays, the authors recognized an abnormal shortening of the extremities in a group treated on the 11th day of pregnancy. Such shortenings were caused by the absence, shortening, curvature, flexure or synostosis of the long bones of the extremities. Furthermore, in foetuses treated on the 12th day of pregnancy, numerous cases of ectrodactylism were found. Recently it has been noted that thalidomide taken during the early stages of pregnancy is liable to produce congenital malformations of the extremities such as phocomelia, defects of radii and thumbs, ectrodactylism, etc. in human beings. Lenz & Knapp (1962) pointed out that there is a critical stage when such serious malformations of the extremities caused by the use of the drug become manifest. The critical stage for the onset of serious malformation of extremities in the mouse foetus resulting from X-radiation corresponded well with the critical stage of the reduction malformations of the extremity caused by thalidomide.

The need for cover is a requirement in all parts of the world. More or less this need has been realized in almost every society. In addition, clothing is one of the basic needs of human beings. This basic need has become a pleasure over time, and the temporary innovation that has entered the life of society with the desire to dress completely or the need for change has turned into an excessive, common indulgence shown by the society for a certain period of time. When we evaluate clothing in terms of nations, it has gained very different meanings with the effect of the cultural structure of the society. Considering this situation in the context of civilizations, of course, we can say that it has presented a similar privilege. In short, every society has made its dress code suitable for its culture and civilization. As in the rest of the world, the robes, dresses, turbans and fabrics of the Ottoman sultans showed themselves clearly as an indicator of the position, wealth and status. Especially caftans, fabrics and patterns, each one is a masterpiece of art. Despite having a simple form according to researches, Ottoman caftans have a very magnificent appearance and beauty. The decorations made for these caftans, lining and moldings, fur ornaments, ornaments made with buttons are very perfect. These caftans have aroused the admiration of the whole world with their fabric, motif and splendor, and many researches have been done on these caftans, which have been exhibited and preserved in various local and foreign museums. The sultan's clothes in the Topkapı Palace Museum Sultan's Clothes Archive consist of approximately 2500 pieces. Most of these are hilat, robes and shalwars. In addition, although it is less, there are also children's (prince's) clothes, so there are no women's clothes. This paper describes human application of their knowledge and technological ability to fly and continue to enhance that power. Through application of their knowledge and technological ability, human beings have evolved the ability to fly and continue to enhance that power. Aircraft technology evolution is about the evolving design of the human movement on the Earth’s surface: people, goods, materials, and everything else. As the whole vehicle or animal evolves toward becoming better at moving mass on the landscape, the organs remain imperfect, because each represents a compromise. The whole vehicle or animal is a construct of organs that are ‘imperfect’ only when examined in isolation. The vehicle design evolves over time and becomes a better construct for moving the vehicle mass on the world map. Flow architectures are evolving right now, throughout nature and in technologies. The legacy of all flow systems (animate and inanimate) is: they have moved weight horizontally and improved the efficiency of that movement because of design evolution.

AbstractMany animal species exhibit sex differences in the time period prior to reaching sexual maturity. However, the underlying mechanism for such biased maturation remains poorly understood. Females of the fruit flyDrosophila melanogastereclose 4 h faster on average than males, owing to differences in the pupal period between the sexes; this characteristic is referred to as the protogyny phenotype. Here, we aimed to elucidate the mechanism underlying the protogyny phenotype in the fruit fly using our newly developedDrosophilaIndividual Activity Monitoring and Detecting System (DIAMonDS), which can continuously detect the precise timing of both pupariation and eclosion of individual flies. Via this system, following the laying of eggs, we detected the precise time points of pupariation and eclosion of a large number of individual flies simultaneously and succeeded in identifying the tiny differences in pupal duration between females and males. We first explored the role of physiological sex by establishing transgender flies via knockdown of the sex-determination gene,transformer(tra) and its co-factortra2, which retained the protogyny phenotype. In addition, disruption of dosage compensation bymale-specific lethal(msl-2) knockdown did not affect the protogyny phenotype. TheDrosophilamaster sex switch gene—Sxlpromotes female differentiation viatraand turns off male dosage compensation through the repression ofmsl-2.However, we observed that stage-specific whole-body knockdown and mutation ofSxlinduced disturbance of the protogyny phenotype. These results suggest that an additional, non-canonical function ofSxlinvolves establishing the protogyny phenotype inD. melanogaster.Author summaryA wide variety of animals show differences in time points of sexual maturation between sexes. For example, in many mammals, including human beings, females mature faster than males. This maturation often takes several months or years, and precisely detecting the time point of maturation is challenging, because of the continuity of growth, especially in mammals. Moreover, the reason behind the difference in sexual maturation time points between sexes is not fully understood. The fruit flyDrosophila—a model organism—also shows biased maturation between the sexes, with females emerging 4 h faster than males (a characteristic known as the protogyny phenotype). To understand the mechanism underlying the protogyny phenotype, we used our newly developed system,DrosophilaIndividual Activity Monitoring and Detecting System (DIAMonDS), to detect the precise eclosion point in individual fruit flies. Surprisingly, our analysis of transgender flies obtained by knockdown and overexpression techniques indicated that a physiological gender might not be necessary requirement for protogyny and that a non-canonical novel function of the fruit fly master sex switch gene,Sxl, regulates protogyny in fruit flies.

ABSTRACT The effect of 5 plant species (arborvitae [Thuja occidentalis], boxwood [Buxus sp., Japanese honeysuckle [Lonicera japonica], rhododendron [Rhododendron sp.], and zebra grass [Miscanthus sinensis]) and 2 rates of lambda-cyhalothrin (3.13 ml and 6.25 ml active ingredient [AI]/liter) on knockdown (1 h) and mortality (24 h) of adult female Aedes albopictus was evaluated over an 8-wk period. A significant difference in knockdown was observed between the 2 rates of lambda-cyhalothrin on the 5 plant species, with the highest proportion of knockdown observed on zebra grass and rhododendron treated at the higher rate. Although mortality was ≥60% and 85% on the 5 plant species at the low and high rates of lambda-cyhalothrin, respectively, a significant difference between the 2 rates was only observed on boxwood and Japanese honeysuckle (P < 0.0001). We also tested the residual toxicity of 3 barrier sprays (lambda-cyhalothrin, bifenthrin, and deltamethrin) and evaluated the efficacy of a short (5-min) exposure to the insecticides on knockdown and mortality of adults over time. Significantly higher knockdown was observed with lambda-cyhalothrin compared with bifenthrin and deltamethrin (P < 0.0001). Mean knockdown was ∼98%, 92%, and 20% for lambda-cyhalothrin, bifenthrin, and deltamethrin, respectively, at week 2, and ∼98%, 0%, and 44%, respectively, 8 wk after treatments were applied. Adult mortality from the 3 chemical treatments, however, remained above 90% throughout the study. Lastly, the trends in mean proportion of knockdown were similar for mosquitoes exposed for either 5 min or 24 h to the 3 chemicals. An overall decline in mean mortality over time, however, was observed for mosquitoes exposed for 5 min to the chemicals compared with mortality from the 24-h exposure. The results suggest that lambda-cyhalothrin can be an effective barrier spray treatment against Ae. albopictus adults because its efficacy is limited little by plant species, it has long residual toxicity, and it is effective following only 5 min of exposure.

Objective To verify the pharyngeal width at rest as a measurement that could be used to assess changes in the degree of dysphagia over time in stroke patients.Methods In a cohort of stroke patients, we performed serial measurements of the pharyngeal width at the midpoints of the second (C2) and third (C3) cervical vertebral bodies using lateral neck X-rays while the patients were at rest. The JOSCYL width, a parameter named after the first initial of each developers’ surname and defined as the average value of the upper and lower pharyngeal widths, was used to formulate the JOSCYL scale, which was calculated as the JOSCYL width × 100/neck circumference. All patients also underwent serial videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSSs). The Spearman correlation analysis was used to detect correlations between the serial VFSS results, JOSCYL widths, and JOSCYL scale values.Results Over time, we observed significant positive and negative correlations of change in the JOSCYL width and scale with changes in the Penetration-Aspiration Scale and the Dysphagia Outcome and Severity Scale scores, respectively.Conclusion The JOSCYL width and JOSCYL scale clearly reflected changes in dysphagia in stroke patients over time. These parameters may provide an easier method for evaluating whether post-stroke dysphagia has been alleviated.

Objective To analyse location and frequency, and change over time, of radiolucent lines (RLLs) around trabecular metal tibial components in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods Osteoarthritic knees in patients who had undergone TKA were retrospectively evaluated via analysis of RLLs on anteroposterior and lateral X-rays obtained at 2 and 6 months, and 1, 2 and 3 years following TKA. Results In 125 osteoarthritic knees from 90 patients (mean age, 75.0 ± 6.2; 21 male/69 female), frequency of RLLs around trabecular metal tibial components was generally highest at 2 and 6 months, and 1 year following TKA, then gradually decreased over the 3-year follow-up. Frequency of RLLs around trabecular metal tibial components was greater at the tip of the two pegs, particularly the medial peg, and around the pegs, versus other zones. No postoperative revisions were performed for loosening. Conclusions Over 3 years following TKA, RLLs were most frequently observed up to 1 year, then gradually decreased. RLLs were significantly more frequent in the medial peg zone and zones close to the medial peg than in other zones.

The use of bio-based material is now widespread in insulation concrete, for example hemp concrete. The bio-based materials in concrete provide many advantages: lightness, sound and thermal insulation, hydrothermal regulation while contributing to a reduction in the environmental impact due to the carbon capture during the plant growth. The development of materials incorporating plant is therefore an important objective for the construction. The next step will be to introduce bio-based materials in structural mortars and concretes. The project FIBRABETON proposes to substitute synthetic or metallic fibers by natural fibers in screed and slab. After a selection of biomass on the resources availability, separation and fractionation are the key step in processing to obtain technical natural fibers. Bulk fiber shaping and packaging methods for easy handling and transportation are tested. Then, functionalization of technical natural fibers by physical & chemical treatments to improve the durability with cement paste is carried out. The second step concerns the introduction of treated or not treated fibers in mortar and concrete formulations. The variation of the nature of the biomass, fibers shape and dosage in concrete are studied. The workability, the compressive strength and withdrawal resistance are measured in order to obtain the best formulation parameters. The evolution of properties over time is also evaluated. The project FIBRABETON is carried out with ESTP, FRD and Vicat and is subsidized by ADEME, Grand Est region and FEDER.

Were we able to talk with other animals, it is extremely unlikely that we should hear them debating the problem of population control. They don't need to debate: nature solves the problem for them. And what is the problem? Simply this: to keep a successful species from being too successful. To keep it from eating itself out of house and home. And the solution? Simply predation and disease, which play the role that human beings might label "providence." As far as the written record reveals, no one recognized the self-elimination of a species as a potential problem for animals until the danger had become suspected among human beings. One of the earliest descriptions of this population problem for other animals was given by the Reverend Joseph Townsend, an English geologist. His key contribution was published in 1786, twelve years before Malthus's celebrated essay (Box 25-1). Townsend was dependent upon others for the outline of his story, and there is some question as to whether the details are historically correct. But the thrust of the story must be true: a single species (goats, in this case) exploiting a resource (plants) cannot, by itself, maintain a stable equilibrium at a comfortable level of living. The animals will either die after eating up all the food, or their numbers will fluctuate painfully. (Details differ, depending on the species and the environment.) Stability and prosperity require that the gift of exponential growth be opposed by some sort of countervailing force (predatory dogs, in Townsend's example). However deplorable predators may be for individuals who happen to be captured and eaten, for the prey population as a whole predators are (over time) a blessing. With millions of different species of animals there are many different particular explanations of how they manage to persist for thousands or millions of years. The species we are most interested in is, of course, Homo sapiens. A meditation on Townsend's account led to a challenging set of questions. "If all this great earth be no more than the Island of Juan Fernandes, and if we are the goats, how can we live "the good life" without a functional equivalent of the dogs? Must we create and sustain our own dogs? Can we do so, consciously? And if we can, what manner of beast will they be?"
