A discussion on the origin and treatment of noise in industrial environments - Noise of gears

In the past there were mainly two important factors in determining the performance of gear units: load capacity and fatigue life. In recent years, however, the noise radiation of running gears is of growing importance. It is now becoming impossible to design gears without considering the significance of this new factor. While there are many data available in the literature for calculating the permissible load, speed, and fatigue life, no methods have so far been developed for a true prediction of the radiated gear noise. A definite noise level, however, is often subject to guarantee between manufacturer and customer. To meet these requirements two fundamental factors must be resolved. First, both partners must set up the conditions for acceptance tests, and secondly, the gear manufacturer must have the know-how to meet these particular requirements. Investigations were therefore, made to find out the main factors influencing gear noise in order to be able to reduce it. In addition eighty installed gear-units were tested to set up classifications regarding generated noise and operating conditions.

Product lifecycle management is one of the main developmental aspects of advanced manufacturing technology. Anti-fatigue design is the key content in product lifecycle management. For designing the fatigue life of shaft exactly and determining the assessment method, the influencing factors must be realized roundly. The mechanical model of shaft is set up at first, and then the main factors that affect the fatigue life of shaft is discussed, the interrelations of the main factors and the framework are founded. The assessment equation of fatigue life for shaft is put forward and the influencing coefficient of multi-axial stress to fatigue life is analyzed. The results of this paper will establish the base of anti-fatigue and assessment life of shaft.


Significance As an open emerging-market economy which usually runs large external deficits, Turkey has long sought to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), with varying degrees of success. At the same time, Turkish companies have been spending significant sums to acquire or set up businesses in other countries over the past 10-15 years. Impacts Turkey’s role as a source of FDI will strengthen Ankara’s influence in the countries that benefit or stand to benefit. The presence of Turkish investors in EU countries, Russia and the Middle East may help to defuse international tensions. Outward FDI may improve the competitiveness of Turkish companies through gains in know-how and integration into international systems.

Our traditional machines are operated by commands. But Increasing diversification and frequent changes in our environments make it more and more difficult for a designer to foresee the operating conditions. Therefore, designs are shifting from designer-centric to user-centric, because it is a user who knows the situation and can make decisions what he or she should do. So now machines should be designed to help a user understand the current situation better and to help him or her make better decisions. They need more flexibility to work better together with its user. But there are many examples, where although a machine is equipped with a wide variety of functions to cope with almost all sorts of situations, accidents occur due to a human error. Such typical case is CFIT (Controlled Flight into terrain) [1] in airplanes. Norman pointed out that simple mechanical objects can be trusted because their behaviors are so simple people know how to operate them. But machines are getting more and more complicated so a user does not know what to expect from them. And if it does not react to his or her expectations, a user sometimes gets very much emotionally upset and gets panicked. How can we solve this problem? A solution may be found in software development. Software was produced in the past just in the same way as hardware, with their functions fixed. But now software changed its product development style. Software first provides a user with simple functions and once he or she becomes familiar with this basic level of functions, it evolves to a little higher level. Through experience and feedback from a user, software evolves its function gradually and continually. It must be noted that most of our machines are not hardware or software alone. They are combinations of both. So we can develop such a machine which possesses a diversity of functions but reveals at the very early stage of operation a basic level of functions to a user, until he or she gets accustomed to it and puts confidence in it. And when he or she fully experiences this level and desires higher level functions, then the machine evolves. How a user cope with situations varies from user to user, but if a machine is customized this way, a user would trust our machines and would operate with full confidence in them.

The number of emission trading and carbon taxation schemes implemented has grown rapidly over the past decade. Together, they cover approximately 16% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Although more than two-thirds of global GHG emissions are related to household consumption, approaches that directly target households, such as personal carbon trading (PCT), do not play a role in the fight against climate change. This is especially puzzling as measures taken so far are not sufficient to reach the 2 °C target. One clue to solving this puzzle comes from political science in the form of the multiple streams approach, which defines criteria that a policy proposal must meet to become part of the political agenda. Based on these criteria, this article conducts a systematic review on PCT to clarify why PCT does not play a role in the reduction of GHG emissions. The results show that there are three main problems with the PCT proposal. First, scholars often criticize the set-up costs as well as the running costs of such a system. Second, there is no clear consensus within the research community on public acceptance of PCT. Third, it is still unclear whether politicians are receptive to PCT or not.

Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IT-SOFC) technology offers interesting opportunities in the panorama of a larger penetration of renewable and distributed power generation, namely high electrical efficiency at manageable scales for both remote and industrial applications. In order to optimize the performance and the operating conditions of such a pre-commercial technology, an effective synergy between experimentation and simulation is fundamental. For this purpose, starting from the SIMFC (SIMulation of Fuel Cells) code set-up and successfully validated for Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells, a new version of the code has been developed for IT-SOFCs. The new release of the code allows the calculation of the maps of the main electrical, chemical, and physical parameters on the cell plane of planar IT-SOFCs fed in co-flow. A semi-empirical kinetic formulation has been set-up, identifying the related parameters thanks to a devoted series of experiments, and integrated in SIMFC. Thanks to a multi-sampling innovative experimental apparatus the simultaneous measurement of temperature and gas composition on the cell plane was possible, so that a preliminary validation of the model on local values was carried out. A good agreement between experimental and simulated data was achieved in terms of cell voltages and local temperatures, but also, for the first time, in terms of local concentration on the cell plane, encouraging further developments. This numerical tool is proposed for a better interpretation of the phenomena occurring in IT-SOFCs and a consequential optimization of their performance.

The wheat precision seeding technology provided an advanced agricultural protection for the high yield of wheat. But the lack of an effective agricultural machine made this technology difficult to apply widely. In this paper a quadruped wheel robot to achieve the wheat precision seeding technology was designed. And experimental study was taken under different operating conditions. Because of multiple effort factors, a quadratic orthogonal rotation combination design method was applied in the experiments, and identifying the main factors by analysis. Then the field test was carried out according to the main factors. The experiment results showed that the qualified rates of seeding exceed 93% in different sowing speed. That reached the agronomic requirements of wheat precision seeding.

Ploughing is probably the greatest agent of attrition to archaeological sites world-wide. In every country, every year, a bit more is shaved off buried strata and a bit more of the past becomes unreadable. On the other hand, people must eat and crops must be planted. How can the fields be best managed to get the best of both worlds? Perhaps the most pressing need for resource managers is to know how quickly a particular field is eroding: negotiation and protection is then possible. Up to now that has been difficult to measure.The new procedure presented here, which draws on the unexpected benefits of nuclear weapons testing, shows how variation in the concentration of the radioisotope 137Cs can be used to monitor soil movements over the last 40 years. The measurements allow a site's ‘life expectancy’ to be calculated, and there are some promising dividends for tracking site formation processes.

It is now nine years since the outbreak of the Chinese revolution. It is fifteen years since the Manchus attempted to maintain their control by introducing representative institutions into China. The development toward constitutional and representative government under the Manchus was checked in 1911 by the revolutionary movement. When the Chinese Republic was established as the successor to the alien Manchu Empire it was felt that the problem of modernizing China bade fair to be solved, and that in an orderly way her political institutions would be brought into harmony with western standards. Unfortunately that orderly progress has not come. Parliamentary government under the Nanking (provisional) Constitution was replaced by the dictatorship of Yuan Shih-kai under the arrangements of the so-called constitutional compact, which in turn was followed by the attempt to reëstablish the monarchy. The failure of the monarchy movement brought back parliamentary government, but before a permanent constitution could be adopted Parliament was again dissolved, and a government controlled by a military clique set up in its place. Since this military government was unacceptable to the southern provinces, the country became divided. So far it has not been possible for the country to reconcile its differences. Instead of an ordered constitutional progress, has come apparent failure in the effort to establish representative government. The name of a republic has been maintained, it is true, and the forms of constitutional government have been retained, but a permanent national government has not been set up, nor has popular government replaced the paternal despotism of the past.
