Physically and intellectually, man is not the same as a million years ago. This “improvement” in humans has occurred over a period of time and not as a result of any outside biotechnical intervention. So, the question is what is the need now? The fine line between what can be done technically and what should be done morally is the reason for biomedical ethics. What is the nature of man, and what is his relationship with his creator and his environment? Whose interest (man, God, and environment) are we as scientists and physicians to guard? What are the rights of the unborn, and who protects those rights? While seeking medical treatment for infertility and reconstructive surgery for a malformation or genetic manipulation for a genetic disease might perhaps be appropriate and recommended, is it also appropriate to create a super healthy, super human with genetic manipulation? If so, then are we embarking on the path of ethnic cleansing of humans of lesser ability, and is it appropriate to discriminate? In this paper, such questions and concerns are discussed from an Islamic perspective.

Infertility is a couple's problem. Almost 50% case males are responsible for infertility. Most common cause is oligospermia and azoospermia and approximately 5% to 15% of men with azoospermia and severe oligospermia may have a chromosomal abnormality. Men with significant spermatogenic compromise are the candidates of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Raised FSH level above 9 is an indication of spermatogenic compromise. So, medical treatment for these patients is waste of time and money. Early attempt of assisted reproduction is ideal to avoid the crisis of total spermatogenic failure in near future. But before going for ICSI genetic testing if possible and proper counseling about possibilities of transmission of genetic disease to offspring is necessary. In Indonesia, to become a leader in positive law and in the Constitution, there is no explanation which explains that the requirements to be a leader in Indonesia must be religious and prohibit non-Muslim religion. the opening of the 1945 Constitution only explained that in Indonesia there was no difference between ethnicity, religion, language, culture, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a deeper study in understanding it so that there is no misunderstanding among the people. Keywords: Leaders; Indonesia; Islam; Non-Muslims; Constitution

Contemporary Muslim scholar Said Nursi’s (1877-1960) view of animals is highly spiritual. His positive thinking philosophy extends to the natural environment and includes animals considered harmful to humans. His view of not killing harmful animals contradicts with the majority Islamic scholarly works which permit the killing of detrimental ones. His understanding of the interconnectedness of natural beings and things as well as their connection to the Divine is the major source for his works. Nursi views each created thing as a piece of the puzzle of the universe in harmony with each other. To him, animals have a deep spiritual aspect alongside their physical dimension. This article argues that throughout his works, Nursi – with his unique perspectives on spiritual approaches towards the environment and devotion to the creation – more than any other Islamic scholar, defended the Islamic view against naturalists and attempted to Islamicize natural philosophy by addressing theists. He views nature as art not the Artist. This article examines Nursi’s positive thinking and actions towards animals as he presents a renewed interpretation of Islamic sacred sources.
