On Second-Order Roll Motions of Ships

More and more vessels for offshore engineering applications have a roll period beyond 20 seconds in order to avoid the wave frequency excitations on the roll motion. That is particularly true for the latest drilling vessels. However, this will lead to an unexpected second-order roll motion of the ships. This paper will present a new methodology to evaluate the second-order roll motions of the ships in random seas. The higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM) has been utilized to generate the second order difference-frequency roll excitations on the ships and the second-order ship roll motions were predicted by a frequency-domain method. A series of model tests have been conducted and the test results have a good agreement with the numerical predictions. Therefore, this new method has been verified and validated.

Advanced structural adhesives are now an important joining technique in automobile and aerospace applications. The perceived uncertainty in the long-term structural performance of bonded members when subjected to static/fatigue loads in aggressive environments is probably restricting an even more widespread use of this joining technology. In this article, the effect of moisture on the static and fatigue resistances of adhesively bonded laminate joints was investigated. Experimental tests were performed on both aged and unaged adhesively bonded laminate joints for static and fatigue responses. Further, using a cohesive zone approach for the adhesive bondlines, a combined diffusion–stress analysis was developed to predict the progressive damage observed in the joints tested experimentally. The numerical predictions were found to be in good agreement with the experimental test results.

A theoretical solution for the response of a viscoelastic beam to off-center low speed transverse impact is presented. The flexural model adopted for investigation consists of a uniform Bernoulli-Euler beam whose behavior has been generalized to include a linear viscoelastic constitutive relation for each element of the beam. Further, the beam and rigid impactor are assumed to remain in contact during the resulting motion and a consistent set of initial displacement and velocity distributions is adopted for the beam. The solution method utilizes two Laplace transforms, i.e., one with respect to space and the other with respect to time. Comparison of the numerical predictions of the theoretical model with central impact test results on graphite-epoxy composite laminates indicates a good agreement between theory and experiment.

To enhance the ship’s seaworthiness and seakeeping capacity, a new prediction algorithm based on Gray RBF neural network is presented to forecast roll motion accurately. The second-order gray model GM(2,1) and RBF network are introduced firstly, then using AGO (accumulated generating operation) to weaken randomness and volatility of raw data, which would affect the accuracy of RBF network. On the other hand, the algorithm flow of GMRBF(2,1) is given. Further more, GMRBF(2,1) is applied in a sample of ship roll sequence and effectively improves large prediction error of second-order gray model. The simulation results prove that the new model is more accurate and stabilizer than traditional models.

Real-time cycle slip detection and repair is one of the key issues in global positioning system (GPS) high precision data processing and application. In particular, when GPS stations are in special environments, such as strong ionospheric disturbance, sea, and high-voltage transmission line interference, cycle slip detection and repair in low elevation GPS observation data are more complicated than those in normal environments. For low elevation GPS undifferenced carrier phase data in different environments, a combined cycle slip detection algorithm is proposed. This method uses the first-order Gauss–Markov stochastic process to model the pseudorange multipath in the wide-lane phase minus narrow-lane pseudorange observation equation, and establishes the state equation of the wide-lane ambiguity with the pseudorange multipath as a parameter, and it uses the Kalman filter for real-time estimation and detects cycle slips based on statistical hypothesis testing with a predicted residual sequence. Meanwhile, considering there are certain correlations among low elevation, observation epoch interval, and ionospheric delay error, a second-order difference geometry-free combination cycle slip test is constructed that takes into account the elevation. By combining the two methods, real-time cycle slip detection for GPS low elevation satellite undifferenced data is achieved. A cycle slip repair method based on spatial search and objective function minimization criterion is further proposed to determine the correct solution of the cycle slips after they are detected. The whole algorithm is experimentally verified using the static and kinematic measured data of low elevation satellites under four different environments: normal condition, high-voltage transmission lines, dynamic condition in the sea, and ionospheric disturbances. The experimental results show that the algorithm can detect and repair cycle slips accurately for low elevation GPS undifferenced data, the difference between the float solution and the true value for the cycle slip does not exceed 0.5 cycle, and the differences obey the normal distribution overall. At the same time, the wide-lane ambiguity and second-order difference GF combination sequence calculated by the algorithm is smoother, which give further evidence that the algorithm for cycle slip detection and repair is feasible and effective, and has the advantage of being immune to the special observation environments.

Abstract Introduction During the current COVID-19 pandemic video consultations are increasingly common in order to minimize the risk of infection for staff and patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a spine examination via video. Methods A total of 43 patients were recruited. Each participant underwent a video-based (VB) and a conventional face-to-face (FTF) spine examination. Pain intensity, active range of motion, inspection, a neurophysiologic basic exam and provocations tests were evaluated using video-based and face-to-face methods. Results The intra-rater reliability (IRR) was measured between both examinations. Good to very good IRR values were obtained in inspection (Kappa between 0,752 und 0,944), active range of motion and basic neurophysiological examination (Kappa between 0,659 und 0,969). Only moderate matches were found in specific provocation tests (Kappa between 0,407 und 0,938). A video-based spine examination is a reliable tool for measuring pain intensity, active range of motion and a basic neurophysiologic exam. Conclusion A basic spine examination during a video consultation is possible. A good agreement of the test results between video-based and face-to-face examination could be found.

The combined brake system (CBS) is a mechanism that links the front and rear brakes for scooters. For two-wheeled scooters, a CBS with appropriate braking force distribution can reduce the risk of crashing accidents due to insufficient driving proficiency. The design of the braking force distribution for a CBS is challenging to the designer because it has to fulfill many requirements such as braking performance, ride comfort, reliability, and low costs. This paper proposes a systematic method to optimize the parameters of CBS. The evaluation indexes for the design are first discussed. The steps to determine the critical parameter to meet the indexes and a method to predict braking performance are developed. Finally, driving tests are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results showed that the deceleration of the tested scooter equipped with the designed CBS achieves an average mean fully developed deceleration (MFDD) of 5.246 m/s2, higher than the homologation requirement. Furthermore, the proposed method’s prediction of braking performance is in good agreement with the test results, with errors <1%.

This paper presents fatigue behaviors and the stiffness degradation law of concrete continuous beams with external prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons. Three specimens were tested under fatigue loading, and the influence of different load levels on the stiffness degradation and fatigue life were studied, and it was found that the stiffness degradation of three test specimens exhibited a three-stage change rule, namely rapid decrease, stable degradation, and sharp decline, but there are obvious differences in the rate and amplitude of stiffness degradation. The load level has a significant influence on the fatigue life of the test specimens. An analytical model with load level considered was proposed to calculate the residual stiffness and predict the stiffness degradation, which is in good agreement with the test results. The model of stiffness degradation presents a possible solution for practical engineering applications of concrete continuous beams with externally prestressed CFRP tendons subjected to different fatigue loadings.

The paper presents an experimental and numerical investigation on the motions of a floating body of simple geometry subjected to harmonic and biharmonic waves. The experiments were carried out in three different water depths representing shallow and deep water. The body is axisymmetric about the vertical axis, like a vertical cylinder with a rounded bottom, and it is kept in place with a soft mooring system. The experimental results include the first order motion responses, the steady drift motion offset in regular waves and the slowly varying motions due to second order interaction in biharmonic waves. The hydrodynamic problem is solved numerically with a second order boundary element method. The results show a good agreement of the numerical calculations with the experiments.
