Comparison of CFD Predictions-of Multi-Mode Vortex-Induced Vibrations of a Tension Riser With Laboratory Measurements

This paper compares previously unpublished laboratory measurements of the vortex-induced vibrations of a vertical tension riser with predictions of five CFD-based riser codes. The experiments were carried out with a 13m long, 28mm diameter model riser of which the upper 7m was in air, and the remainder in water with a uniform flow generated by carriage motion at speeds up to 1m/s. In-line and cross-flow responses were computed from measurements of the curvature of the riser at 32 stations over its length. Key results are compared with blind CFD predictions in which the flow is computed in two dimensions on each of a number of horizontal planes. The CFD codes used in this exercise represent a wide range of approaches, represented by (1) a vorticity-stream function method using a finite volume technique for integrating the vorticity transport equation, (2) finite elements with linear interpolation functions on a triangular grid, (3) a pressure-correction method in a finite-volume integration scheme on hybrid unstructured grids, (4) a discrete vortex formulation incorporating the growing core size or core spread method to model diffusion of vorticity, (5) a velocity-vorticity method using a hybrid Eulerian–Lagrangian vortex-in-cell method with LES, diffusion computed on a grid, and convection of vorticity by discrete vortices. In individual test cases, maximum computed cross-flow responses were between 23% and 160% of measured values, and there was a much wider range in ratios of predicted to measured curvatures. Overall, average ratios of predicted to measured cross-flow responses were between 59% and 106% for the 5 different codes, and those for maximum in-line deflections between 71% and 109%. Predicted curvatures in either direction were on average between 30% and 170% of the measured values.

AbstractA slender flexible body immersed in sheared cross-flow may exhibit vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) involving a wide range of excited frequencies and structural wavenumbers. The mechanisms of broadband VIVs of a cylindrical tensioned beam of length-to-diameter aspect ratio 200 placed in shear flow, with an exponentially varying profile along the span, are investigated by means of direct numerical simulation. The Reynolds number is equal to 330 based on the maximum velocity, for comparison with previous work on narrowband vibrations in linear shear flow. The flow is found to excite the structure at a number of different locations under a condition of wake–body synchronization, or lock-in. Broadband responses are associated with a distributed occurrence of the lock-in condition along the span, as opposed to the localized lock-in regions limited to the high inflow velocity zone, reported for narrowband vibrations in sheared current. Despite the instantaneously multi-frequency nature of broadband responses, the lock-in phenomenon remains a locally mono-frequency event, since the vortex formation is generally synchronized with a single vibration frequency at a given location. The spanwise distribution of the excitation zones induces travelling structural waves moving in both directions; this contrasts with the narrowband case where the direction of propagation toward decreasing inflow velocity is preferred. A generalization of the mechanism of phase-locking between the in-line and cross-flow responses is proposed for broadband VIVs under the lock-in condition. A spanwise drift of the in-line/cross-flow phase difference is identified for the high-wavenumber vibration components; this drift is related to the strong travelling wave character of the corresponding structural waves.

Abstract In this contribution, a vector-autoregressive (VAR) process with multivariate t-distributed random deviations is incorporated into the Gauss-Helmert model (GHM), resulting in an innovative adjustment model. This model is versatile since it allows for a wide range of functional models, unknown forms of auto- and cross-correlations, and outlier patterns. Subsequently, a computationally convenient iteratively reweighted least squares method based on an expectation maximization algorithm is derived in order to estimate the parameters of the functional model, the unknown coefficients of the VAR process, the cofactor matrix, and the degree of freedom of the t-distribution. The proposed method is validated in terms of its estimation bias and convergence behavior by means of a Monte Carlo simulation based on a GHM of a circle in two dimensions. The methodology is applied in two different fields of application within engineering geodesy: In the first scenario, the offset and linear drift of a noisy accelerometer are estimated based on a Gauss-Markov model with VAR and multivariate t-distributed errors, as a special case of the proposed GHM. In the second scenario real laser tracker measurements with outliers are adjusted to estimate the parameters of a sphere employing the proposed GHM with VAR and multivariate t-distributed errors. For both scenarios the estimated parameters of the fitted VAR model and multivariate t-distribution are analyzed for evidence of auto- or cross-correlations and deviation from a normal distribution regarding the measurement noise.

AbstractThe fundamental mechanisms responsible for the creation of electrohydrodynamically driven roll structures in free electroconvection between two plates are analysed with reference to traditional Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RBC). Previously available knowledge limited to two dimensions is extended to three-dimensions, and a wide range of electric Reynolds numbers is analysed, extending into a fully inherently three-dimensional turbulent regime. Results reveal that structures appearing in three-dimensional electrohydrodynamics (EHD) are similar to those observed for RBC, and while two-dimensional EHD results bear some similarities with the three-dimensional results there are distinct differences. Analysis of two-point correlations and integral length scales show that full three-dimensional electroconvection is more chaotic than in two dimensions and this is also noted by qualitatively observing the roll structures that arise for both low (${\mathit{Re}}_{E} = 1$) and high electric Reynolds numbers (up to ${\mathit{Re}}_{E} = 120$). Furthermore, calculations of mean profiles and second-order moments along with energy budgets and spectra have examined the validity of neglecting the fluctuating electric field ${ E}_{i}^{\ensuremath{\prime} } $ in the Reynolds-averaged EHD equations and provide insight into the generation and transport mechanisms of turbulent EHD. Spectral and spatial data clearly indicate how fluctuating energy is transferred from electrical to hydrodynamic forms, on moving through the domain away from the charging electrode. It is shown that ${ E}_{i}^{\ensuremath{\prime} } $ is not negligible close to the walls and terms acting as sources and sinks in the turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent scalar flux and turbulent scalar variance equations are examined. Profiles of hydrodynamic terms in the budgets resemble those in the literature for RBC; however there are terms specific to EHD that are significant, indicating that the transfer of energy in EHD is also attributed to further electrodynamic terms and a strong coupling exists between the charge flux and variance, due to the ionic drift term.

The most influential parameter on the behavior of two-component flow in porous media is “wettability”. When wettability is being characterized, the most frequently used parameter is the “contact angle”. When a fluid-drop is placed on a solid surface, in the presence of a second, surrounding fluid, the fluid-fluid surface contacts the solid-surface at an angle that is typically measured through the fluid-drop. If this angle is less than 90°, the fluid in the drop is said to “wet” the surface. If this angle is greater than 90°, the surrounding fluid is said to “wet” the surface. This definition is universally accepted and appears to be scientifically justifiable, at least for a static situation where the solid surface is horizontal. Recently, this concept has been extended to characterize wettability in non-static situations using high-resolution, two-dimensional digital images of multi-component systems. Using simple thought experiments and published experimental results, many of them decades old, it will be demonstrated that contact angles are not primary parameters – their values depend on many other parameters. Using these arguments, it will be demonstrated that contact angles are not the cause of wettability behavior but the effect of wettability behavior and other parameters. The result of this is that the contact angle cannot be used as a primary indicator of wettability except in very restricted situations. Furthermore, it will be demonstrated that even for the simple case of a capillary interface in a vertical tube, attempting to use simply a two-dimensional image to determine the contact angle can result in a wide range of measured values. This observation is consistent with some published experimental results. It follows that contact angles measured in two-dimensions cannot be trusted to provide accurate values and these values should not be used to characterize the wettability of the system.

The fluid-structure energy transfer of a tensioned beam of length to diameter ratio 200, subject to vortex-induced vibrations in linear shear flow, is investigated by means of direct numerical simulation at three Reynolds numbers, from 110 to 1,100. In both the in-line and cross-flow directions, the high-wavenumber structural responses are characterized by mixed standing-traveling wave patterns. The spanwise zones where the flow provides energy to excite the structural vibrations are located mainly within the region of high current where the lock-in condition is established, i.e. where vortex shedding and cross-flow vibration frequencies coincide. However, the energy input is not uniform across the entire lock-in region. This can be related to observed changes from counterclockwise to clockwise structural orbits. The energy transfer is also impacted by the possible occurrence of multi-frequency vibrations.

The present work focusses on the numerical study of Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) of an elastically mounted cylinder in a cross flow at moderate Reynolds numbers. Low mass-damping experimental studies show that the dynamic behavior of the cylinder exhibits a three-branch response model, depending on the range of the reduced velocity. However, few numerical simulations deal with accurate computations of the VIV amplitudes at the lock-in upper branch of the bifurcation diagram. In this work, the dynamic response of the cylinder is investigated by means of three-dimensional Large Eddy Simulation (LES). An Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian framework is employed to account for fluid solid interface boundary motion and grid deformation. Numerous numerical simulations are performed at a Reynolds number of 3900 for both no damping and low-mass damping ratio and various reduced velocities. A detailed physical analysis is conducted to show how the present methodology is able to capture the different VIV responses.

This study deals with a local incidence angle correction method, i.e., the land cover-specific local incidence angle correction (LC-SLIAC), based on the linear relationship between the backscatter values and the local incidence angle (LIA) for a given land cover type in the monitored area. Using the combination of CORINE Land Cover and Hansen et al.’s Global Forest Change databases, a wide range of different LIAs for a specific forest type can be generated for each scene. The algorithm was developed and tested in the cloud-based platform Google Earth Engine (GEE) using Sentinel-1 open access data, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model, and CORINE Land Cover and Hansen et al.’s Global Forest Change databases. The developed method was created primarily for time-series analyses of forests in mountainous areas. LC-SLIAC was tested in 16 study areas over several protected areas in Central Europe. The results after correction by LC-SLIAC showed a reduction of variance and range of backscatter values. Statistically significant reduction in variance (of more than 40%) was achieved in areas with LIA range >50° and LIA interquartile range (IQR) >12°, while in areas with low LIA range and LIA IQR, the decrease in variance was very low and statistically not significant. Six case studies with different LIA ranges were further analyzed in pre- and post-correction time series. Time-series after the correction showed a reduced fluctuation of backscatter values caused by different LIAs in each acquisition path. This reduction was statistically significant (with up to 95% reduction of variance) in areas with a difference in LIA greater than or equal to 27°. LC-SLIAC is freely available on GitHub and GEE, making the method accessible to the wide remote sensing community.

Helical strakes are known to reduce and even eliminate the oscillation amplitude of vortex induced vibrations (VIV). This reduction will increase fatigue life, and also reduce drag magnification from cross-flow vibrations. But sections with strakes will also have a larger drag coefficient than the bare riser. Hence, the extension of a section with strakes along a riser should be large enough to reduce oscillations, but not too long in order to limit drag forces from current and waves. The optimum length and position for a given riser will therefore vary with current profile. Dynamic response from waves should also be taken into account. The purpose of the present paper is to illustrate the influence from strakes on VIV, as well as on static and dynamic response for a drilling riser. Hydrodynamic coefficients for a cylinder with helical strakes are found from experiments and applied in an empirical model for the analysis of VIV. The result from the VIV analysis is used for a second calculation of drag forces that are applied in an updated static analysis. Dynamic stresses from regular waves are also presented, but VIV are not considered for these cases. A simple study of length and position of the section with strakes is carried out for some standard current profiles. Results are presented in terms of oscillation amplitudes, fatigue damage, bending stresses and riser angles at ends. The study is based on test data for one particular strake geometry, but the analysis method as such is general, and the computer programs used in the study can easily apply other test data.

In this study, the propagation of waves in a two-dimensional parallel-sided nozzle is considered allowing for the combination of: (a) distinct impedances of the upper and lower walls; (b) upper and lower boundary layers with different thicknesses with linear shear velocity profiles matched to a uniform core flow; and (c) a uniform cross-flow as a bias flow out of one and into the other porous acoustic liner. The model involves an “acoustic triple deck” consisting of third-order non-sinusoidal non-plane acoustic-shear waves in the upper and lower boundary layers coupled to convected plane sinusoidal acoustic waves in the uniform core flow. The acoustic modes are determined from a dispersion relation corresponding to the vanishing of an 8 × 8 matrix determinant, and the waveforms are combinations of two acoustic and two sets of three acoustic-shear waves. The eigenvalues are calculated and the waveforms are plotted for a wide range of values of the four parameters of the problem, namely: (i/ii) the core and bias flow Mach numbers; (iii) the impedances at the two walls; and (iv) the thicknesses of the two boundary layers relative to each other and the core flow. It is shown that all three main physical phenomena considered in this model can have a significant effect on the wave field: (c) a bias or cross-flow even with small Mach number [Formula: see text] relative to the mean flow Mach number [Formula: see text] can modify the waveforms; (b) the possibly dissimilar impedances of the lined walls can absorb (or amplify) waves more or less depending on the reactance and inductance; (a) the exchange of the wave energy with the shear flow is also important, since for the same stream velocity, a thin boundary layer has higher vorticity, and lower vorticity corresponds to a thicker boundary layer. The combination of all these three effects (a–c) leads to a large set of different waveforms in the duct that are plotted for a wide range of the parameters (i–iv) of the problem.
