Background. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a clinical joint degenerative disease, the pathogenic factors of which include age, obesity, and mechanical injury. Its main pathological features include cartilage loss, narrowing of joint space, and osteophyte formation. At present, there are a variety of treatment methods for OA. Natural products, which are gradually being applied in the treatment of OA, are advantageous as they present with low toxicity and low costs and act on multiple targets. Methods. The terms “natural products,” “osteoarthritis,” and “chondrocytes” were searched in PubMed to screen the related literature in the recent 10 years. Results. We comprehensively introduced 62 published papers on 48 natural products involving 6, 3, 5, 12, 4, and 5 kinds of terpenoids, polysaccharides, polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins, respectively (and others). Conclusion. The mechanisms of their anti-OA action mainly involve reducing the production of inflammatory factors, reducing oxidative stress, regulating the metabolism of chondrocytes, promoting the proliferation of chondrocytes, or inhibiting chondrocyte apoptosis. This article summarizes the anti-OA activity of natural products in the last 10 years and provides candidate monomers for further study for use in OA treatment.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease in middle-aged and older adults. Abnormal proteins such as α-synuclein are essential factors in PD’s pathogenesis. Autophagy is the main participant in the clearance of abnormal proteins. The overactive or low function of autophagy leads to autophagy stress. Not only is it difficult to clear abnormal proteins but also it can cause damage to neurons. In this article, the effects of natural products ingredients, such as salidroside, paeoniflorin, curcumin, resveratrol, corynoxine, and baicalein, on regulating autophagy and protecting neurons were discussed in detail to provide a reference for the research and development of drugs for the treatment of PD.

In recent years, the frequency of clinical occurrence of abnormal uterine bleeding in adolescence has gradually increased. In order to fully understand the research progress in the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding in adolescence, various studies and clinical experience have been reviewed by consulting related literature reports. The results found that currently Western medicine mainly uses hormone drugs in clinical treatment, but there are risks such as more clinical adverse reactions and higher recurrence rate; traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment has achieved satisfactory results, but the advantages of sudden collapse and hemostasis are not obvious. Combined TCM and Western medicine treatment, it can learn from each other and has become a research hotspot in recent years, which is worthy of an in-depth discussion.

Amine compounds are widely found in natural products, pharmaceuticals and fine chemical products. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop methods for synthesizing amine compounds. Therefore, in recent years, a new method of synthesizing amines has been developed, namely "hydrogen borrowing reaction". This article reviews the alkylation of primary alcohols and amines, the cyclization of amino alcohols to form N-heterocyclic compounds, the reaction of diols and amines to form N-heterocyclic compounds, the reaction of alcohols and sulfonamides, and the reaction of alcohols and amines containing N heteroatoms , Alcohol and ammonia gas and ammonia to produce amine by hydrogen reaction research progress.

In recent years, almost all extraction processes in the perfume, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food ingredients, nutraceuticals, biofuel and fine chemical industries rely massively on solvents, the majority of which have petroleum origins. The intricate processing steps involved in the industrial extraction cycle makes it increasingly difficult to predict the overall environmental impact; despite the tremendous energy consumption and the substantial usage of solvents, often the yields are indicated in decimals. The ideal alternative solvents suitable for green extraction should have high solvency, high flash points with low toxicity and low environmental impacts, be easily biodegradable, obtained from renewable (non-petrochemical) resources at a reasonable price and should be easy to recycle without any deleterious effect to the environment. Finding the perfect solvent that meets all the aforementioned requirements is a challenging task, thus the decision for the optimum solvent will always be a compromise depending on the process, the plant and the target molecules. The objective of this comprehensive review is to furnish a vivid picture of current knowledge on alternative, green solvents used in laboratories and industries alike for the extraction of natural products focusing on original methods, innovation, protocols, and development of safe products.

Chitosan is a cationic natural polysaccharide, which has emerged as an increasingly interesting biomaterialover the past few years. It constitutes a novel perspective in drug delivery systems and nanocarriers’ formulations due to its beneficial properties, including biocompatibility, biodegradability and low toxicity. The potentiality of chemical or enzymatic modifications of the biopolymer, as well as its complementary use with other polymers, further attract the scientific community, offering improved and combined properties in the final materials. As a result, chitosan has been extensively used as a matrix for the encapsulation of several valuable compounds. In this review article, the advantageous character of chitosan as a matrix for nanosystemsis presented, focusing on the encapsulation of natural products. A five-year literature review is attempted covering the use of chitosan and modified chitosan as matrices and coatings for the encapsulation of natural extracts, essential oils or pure naturally occurring bioactive compounds are discussed.

Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the repairing effects of glucosamine sulfate combined with etoricoxib on articular cartilages of patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods: A total of 106 KOA patients were randomly divided into control (n=40) and experimental groups (n=66), and treated with etoricoxib alone and glucosamine sulfate plus etoricoxib respectively. Changes in WOMAC score and clinical efficacy were observed. The synovial fluid was extracted. Bone metabolism indices, growth factors, inflammatory factors, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and NO-induced apoptosis-related factors were measured by ELISA. JNK and Wnt5a mRNA levels were determined using RT-PCR. Results: After treatment, the total WOMAC scores of both groups significantly declined (P<0.05), being lower in experimental group. The total effective rate of experimental group was higher (P<0.05). BGP and OPG levels rose, especially in experimental group (P<0.05). CTX-II, COMP and RANKL levels decreased, particularly in experimental group (P<0.05). TGF-β, IGF-1 and FGF-2 levels increased, especially in experimental group (P<0.05). Both groups, particularly experimental group, had decreased levels of IL-1β, IL-17, IL-18, TNF-α, MMP-3, MMP-9 and MMP-13 (P<0.05). JNK and Wnt5a mRNA levels of both groups dropped, which were lower in experimental group (P<0.05). NO and LPO levels reduced, being lower in experimental group. SOD level rose, especially in experimental group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Glucosamine sulfate plus etoricoxib can repair the articular cartilages of KOA patients. Probably, JNK and Wnt5a are down-regulated to inhibit the secretion of MMPs through lowering the levels of inflammatory factors, thereby delaying cartilage matrix degradation. NO-induced chondrocyte apoptosis may be suppressed via the SOD pathway.
