Objectives: Nasal septal surgery is one of the most common surgical procedure performed by otolaryngologists. Nasal packs are used for bleeding control, prevention of septal hematoma, replacement of mucoperichondrial flaps, and stabilization of the septum after nasal septal surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of albumin-glutaraldehyde–based tissue adhesive (Bioglue), which can be used as an alternative to nasal pack on the nasal septum after experimental nasal septum surgery. Methods: A total of 16 female Wistar albino rats were randomly separated into the study group (n = 10) and the control group (n = 6). After raising the mucoperichondrial flap on one side of the septum, Bioglue was used to fix the mucoperichondrial flap over the septal cartilage ın the study group and nasal packs (Merocel) were used for fixation in the control group. The rats were sacrificed at 2 and 4 weeks after septoplasty. All the tissue samples were evaluated under light microscope by the same pathologist in respect of foreign-body reaction, degree of inflammation, granulation tissue, fibrosis, cartilage damage, and cilia and goblet cell damage. In the control group, the Merocel packs were removed after 2 days and the groups were compared in terms of hematoma. Results: No hematoma was observed in any group. Septal perforation was determined in all the study group participants and loss of cilia and goblet cells and foreign-body reaction were found in 8 samples of the study group participants and in none of the control group. Conclusions: The results of this study show that Bioglue caused segmental cartilage injury; therefore, it may not suitable for use following septal surgery.

AbstractObjectives:This study was designed to investigate the effects of the tissue adhesive N-butyl cyanoacrylate on nasal septal tissues after septal surgery in a rabbit model.Methods:Forty-two adult New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into three groups (14 in each group): septoplasty alone, septoplasty plus N-butyl cyanoacrylate, and controls. The open approach was used to explore the nasal septum. After raising mucoperichondrial and mucoperiosteal flaps on both sides of the septum, the septum was detached from the nasal floor in the septoplasty alone and septoplasty plus N-butyl cyanoacrylate groups. In the septoplasty plus N-butyl cyanoacrylate group, the mucoperichondrial and mucoperiosteal flaps were fixed to the septum and the septum was fixed lateral to the nasal spine using N-butyl cyanoacrylate; in the septoplasty alone group, the septum was packed with Merocel. In the control group, no further septal surgery was performed after flap elevation. Animals were observed for bleeding and haematoma formation over the first 24 hours. Seven animals in each group were used to evaluate early histopathological effects on the septal tissues, at four weeks post-operatively; the other seven in each group were used to evaluate late effects, at 12 weeks. Results:Haematoma formation was observed in 10 animals in the septoplasty alone group, in four animals in the control group, and in only one animal in the septoplasty plus N-butyl cyanoacrylate group. The difference in haematoma incidence between the septoplasty alone and the septoplasty plus N-butyl cyanoacrylate groups was significant (p = 0.000). Histopathological evaluation revealed no significant difference between the groups as regards granulation tissue formation at week four versus week 12; however, there was a significant difference between the septoplasty plus N-butyl cyanoacrylate group and the control groups as regards inflammation at week 12 (p = 0.038). There was a significant difference between the septoplasty plus N-butyl cyanoacrylate group and the septoplasty alone group as regards the composition of the bone–cartilage junction zone at week four (p = 0.001). There was also a significant difference between the septoplasty plus N-butyl cyanoacrylate group and the control group as regards the cellular structure of new cartilage formation at week 12 (p = 0.004).Conclusions:In this rabbit septoplasty model, N-butyl cyanoacrylate appeared to be an effective nasal tissue adhesive, with a low complication rate.

Abstract Background After renal trauma, surgical treatment is vital, but sometimes there may be loss of function due to fibrosis. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of autologous omentum flaps on injured renal tissues in a rat model. Methods A total of 30 Wistar albino rats were included and randomly divided equally into a control group and four intervention groups. Iatrogenic renal injuries were repaired using a surgical technique (primary repair 1 group and primary repair 2 group) or transposition of the autologous omentum (omentum repair 1 group and omentum repair 2 group). Blood samples were taken preoperatively and on the 1st and 7th postoperative days in all groups and on the 18th postoperative day in the control and two intervention groups. All rats were sacrificed on the 7th or 18th day postoperatively, and their right kidneys were taken for histopathological evaluation. Results The mean urea level significantly decreased from day 1 to day 7 and from day 1 to day 18 in the omentum repair 2 group (P = 0.005 and P = 0.004, respectively). There were no other significant changes in urea or creatinine levels within the intervention groups (P > 0.05). There was no significant correlation between the urea and creatinine levels and the histological scores (P > 0.05). The primary repair 1 and 2 groups had significantly higher median granulation and inflammation scores in the kidney specimen than the control and omentum repair groups (P < 0.05). The omentum repair 2 group had significantly lower median granulation and inflammation scores in the surrounding tissues than the primary repair 2 group (P < 0.05). The completion score for the healing process in the kidney specimen was significantly higher in the omentum repair groups than in the primary repair groups (P < 0.05). The omentum repair 2 group had significantly lower median granulation and inflammation scores in the surrounding tissues than the primary repair 2 group (P < 0.05). Granulation degree in the kidney specimen was strongly and positively correlated with the inflammation degree (r = 0.824, P < 0.001) and foreign body reaction in the kidney specimen (r = 0.872, P < 0.001) and a strong and negative correlation with the healing process completion score in the kidney (r = − 0.627, P = 0.001). Inflammation degree in the kidney specimen was strongly and positively correlated with the foreign body reaction in the kidney specimen (r = 0.731, P = 0.001) and strongly and negatively correlated with the healing process completion score in the kidney specimen (r = − 0.608, P = 0.002). Conclusion Autologous omentum tissue for kidney injury repair attenuated inflammation and granulation. Additionally, the use of omental tissue to facilitate healing of kidney injury may theoretically lead to a more effective healing process and reduced fibrosis and tissue and function loss.

Abstract Aim We aimed to evaluate the repair effect of transpositioned autologous omentum on the injured renal tissues in the rat model. Methods A total of 30 female Wistar Albino rats were included and they were randomly separated into control and four groups. In all groups, blood samples were taken at preoperatively and at the 7th day postoperatively, additionally they were taken at 18th day postoperatively for creatinine and urea analysis. All rats of control group were sacrificed at 18th day postoperatively and right kidneys were taken for histopathological evaluation. After the created renal injuries were repaired primarily kidney surgery or omentum added kidney surgery. Results According to the our results, granulation and inflammation in kidney specimens were moderately and highly positive correlated with granulation, inflammation, fibrosis and foreign body reaction in surrounding tissue ((r:0.478, p = 0.008), (r:0.591, p = 0.001), (r:0.394, p = 0.031), (r:0.635, p < 0.001)). Granulation in kidney specimen was highly possitive correlated with inflammation and foreign body reaction in kidney specimens ((r:0.824, p < 0.001), (r:0.872, p < 0.001)). We could not show any significant correlation between biochemical values (U, Cr) and histopathological findings. Conclusion According to our results, our biochemical results were not correlated with histopathological analysis. But we detected histopathogical significant differences between primary kidney repair and omentum added kidney repair groups. And we recommend that kidney injuries should be surgical repaired by stem cell sources as like omentum tissue.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways observed exclusively in humans and sometimes animals. In this study, 40 Albino rats of the same age were used. After 6 weeks of ovalbumin-induced asthma in all animals, 40 rats were randomly divided into two groups as control and study groups for a 21-day treatment period. At the treatment stage, the control group animals were treated with normal tap water, while the study group animals were treated with hot spring water. Clinical, hematological, blood biochemical and histopathological examinations were performed before starting the study, after asthma formation, and on days of 1st, 7th, 14th and 21st after treatment. Total leukocyte, neutrophil, monocyte, AST, ALT, GGT, total cholesterol, triglyceride levels were significantly decreased (p <0.05) in the study group animals which treated with hot spring water. These normalization changes were confirmed by histopathological findings. Consequently, it was concluded that hot spring water of Afyonkarahisar Region provide a very successful treatment in asthma, and it should be considered as a supportive option for the treatment of asthma.

Epidural fibrosis is an extradural scar tissue formed after a laminectomy procedure. It is associated with persistent pain after spinal surgery and an increased risk of complications during revision surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the preventive effects of local application of an omental free graft in minimising spinal epidural fibrosis in a rabbit laminectomy model. Twenty two rabbits were randomly divided in two groups, a control group of seven and an experimental group of 15 animals. A dorsal laminectomy at levels L1 to L3 was performed on each rabbit of both groups. Prior to the laminectomy procedure, the animals from the experimental group were submitted to a laparotomy in order to obtain the free omental graft. The graft was then applied to the same animal at the dural deffect. All rabbits were euthanised six weeks after surgery and spine segments L1 to L3 were removed. Histological sections were evaluated for fibrosis intensity at the laminectomy level, the adhesion degree between dura mater and fibrous tissue and the presence of the foreign body reaction. A statistically significant correlation was established for the foreign body reaction presence and belonging to the group, which can be explained by the omental effects on inflammation reduction and healing promotion. The degree of adhesion between the dura mater and fibrous tissue and the intensity of the fibrous tissue at the laminectomy level were lower in the experimental group although the differences were not statistically significant. The use of free omental grafts is thus a promising technique in epidural fibrosis prevention.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible protective effects of adalimumab (ADA) on cell damage in rat liver tissue during ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of infrarenal abdominal aorta. Thirty male Wistar-albino rats were divided into three groups: control, I/R, and I/R+ADA, each group containing 10 animals. Laparotomy without I/R injury was performed in the control group animals. Laparotomy in the I/R group was followed by two hours of infrarenal abdominal aortic cross ligation and then two hours of reperfusion. ADA (50 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally as a single dose, to the I/R+ADA group, five days before I/R. The tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) (pg/mg protein) and nitric oxide (NO) (µmol/g protein) levels in the I/R group (430.8 ± 70.1, 8.0 ± 1.1, resp.) were significantly higher than those in the I/R+ADA group (338.0 ± 71.6,P=0.006; 6.3 ± 1.2,P=0.008) and the control group (345.5 ± 53.3,P=0.008; 6.5 ± 1.5,P=0.010, resp.). I/R causes severe histopathological injury to the liver tissue, but ADA leads to much less histopathological changes. ADA treatment significantly decreased the severity of liver I/R injury. ADA pretreatment may have protective effects on experimental liver injury.

(1) Background: Developing a high-quality, injectable biomaterial that is labor-saving, cost-efficient, and patient-ready is highly desirable. Our research group has previously developed a collagen-based injectable scaffold for the treatment of a variety of wounds including wounds with deep and irregular beds. Here, we investigated the biocompatibility of our liquid scaffold in mice and compared the results to a commercially available injectable granular collagen-based product. (2) Methods: Scaffolds were applied in sub-dermal pockets on the dorsum of mice. To examine the interaction between the scaffolds and the host tissue, samples were harvested after 1 and 2 weeks and stained for collagen content using Masson’s Trichrome staining. Immunofluorescence staining and quantification were performed to assess the type and number of cells infiltrating each scaffold. (3) Results: Histological evaluation after 1 and 2 weeks demonstrated early and efficient integration of our liquid scaffold with no evident adverse foreign body reaction. This rapid incorporation was accompanied by significant cellular infiltration of stromal and immune cells into the scaffold when compared to the commercial product (p < 0.01) and the control group (p < 0.05). Contrarily, the commercial scaffold induced a foreign body reaction as it was surrounded by a capsule-like, dense cellular layer during the 2-week period, resulting in delayed integration and hampered cellular infiltration. (4) Conclusion: Results obtained from this study demonstrate the potential use of our liquid scaffold as an advanced injectable wound matrix for the management of skin wounds with complex geometries.

Abstract Limited studies have assessed the toxic effect of sub-acute and sub-chronic exposure of leachate (mixture of metals) in mammalian kidney. The sub-acute and sub-chronic exposure of mature male Wistar-strain albino rats (200-220 g) were given by oral administration with leachate from Elewi Odo municipal battery recycling industry (EOMABRIL) for period of 7 and 60 days respectively, at different concentrations (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%). This was to evaluate its toxic effects on male renal functions using biomarkers of oxidative stress and nephro-cellular damage. Control groups were treated equally, but given distilled water instead of the leachate. All the groups were fed with the same standard food and had free access to drinking water. Following the exposure, results showed that the treatment induced systemic toxicity at the doses tested by causing a significant (p<0.05) alteration in enzymatic antioxidantscatalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the kidneys which resulted into elevated levels of malonaldehyde (MDA). Reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were found to be significantly (p<0.05) depleted relative to the control group. Considerable renal cortical congestion and numerous tubules with protein casts were observed in the lumen of EOMABRIL-treated rats. These findings conclude that possible mechanism by which EOMABRIL at the investigated concentrations elicits nephrotoxicity could be linked to the individual, additive, synergistic or antagonistic interactions of this mixture of metals with the renal bio-molecules, alteration of kidney detoxifying enzymes and necrosis of nephritic tubular epithelial cells.

Aim: Evaluate the protective effects of palm oil on renal parameters after dichlorvos toxicity in albino rats. Study Design and Methodology: The study consisted of 3 phases: The acute study which lasted for 24 hours, the sub-acute study which lasted for 14 days and the sub chronic study which lasted for 30 days. The design and treatment pattern is shown below. Phase 1: Acute Study. Group 1: No DDVP, No palm oil for 24 hours (Negative control), Group 2: 30 mg/kg of DDVP without palm oil (positive control), Group 3: 30 mg/kg of DDVP and 100 mg/kg palm oil for 24 hours (treatment group). Phase 2: Sub-Acute (14 days) Study. Group 4: No DDVP, No palm oil for 14 days (Negative control), Group 5: 10 mg/kg of DDVP without palm oil daily for 14 days (positive control), Group 6: 10 mg/kg of DDVP and 100 mg/kg of palm oil daily for 14 days (positive control). Phase 3: Sub-Chronic (30 days) Study. Group 7: No DDVP, No palm oil for 30 days (Negative control), Group 8: 10 mg/kg of DDVP without palm oil daily for 30 days (positive control), Group 9: 10 mg/kg of DDVP and 100 mg/kg palm oil daily for 30 days (treatment group). All administration was done orally. After the period of treatments, the rats were sacrificed after 18 hours of fast. Whole blood samples (5 mls) were collected into lithium heparin bottle and spun at 3500 rpm for 5 minutes to obtain plasma samples. Samples obtained were used for the determination of Na+, K+, HCO3, urea, and creatinine while renal tissues obtained were used for histopathological examinations. Results: Significantly higher values were seen in urea in the dichlorvos treated rats over a period of 24 hours, 14 days, and 30 days as compared to rats co-treated with palm oil and the control. Creatinine indicated significantly higher over a period of 24 hours while non-significant increases were observed in the dichlorvos treated rats over a period of 14 days and 30 days. More so, significantly higher values were seen in potassium in the dichlorvos treated rats over a period of 24 hours and 14 days, while significantly higher values in potassium were seen after period of 30 days as compared to rats co-treated with palm oil and the control. Sodium and chloride did not indicate significant difference over the period of 24 hours, 14 days, and 30 days. Histological examination of the renal tissue indicated structural distortions dichlorvos treated rats over a period of 24 hours, 14 days and 30 days while significant improvements in the structural integrity of the kidney were observed in rats co-treated with palm oil. Conclusion: Results obtained indicated that palm oil showed a protective effect in ameliorating the nephrotoxicity induced by dichlorvos as shown by the histological examination and decreased values of creatinine and urea as well as potassium in palm oil treated rats.
