The aim of this study was to compare the effects of a strength training program (STP) using free weights (FW) versus elastic tubing (ET) in 62 premenopausal, sedentary women diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (MS). Participants were randomly assigned to the FW or ET experimental group (EG) or a control group whose members remained sedentary. Members of each EG followed their assigned STP for 12 weeks, and biomarkers (BMs) related to MS and motor function (MF) parameters were evaluated. Both EGs showed a significant reduction in C-reactive protein level and a positive trend in the other BMs. Almost all MF parameters increased significantly in both EGs. No positive changes were found in the CG. These results indicate that the implementation of an STP, with either FW or ET, improves both metabolic health and MF and should be considered part of the basic approach to health care in women.

Introduction. Recurrent depression is a psychiatric disorder of which etiology and pathogenesis might be related to immune response. Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and its components are also strongly associated with elevated inflammatory indicators, as so as the body mass index (BMI) and total cholesterol levels. Objective. Objective of this study was to investigate if there was any difference in C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in patients with recurrent depressive disorder, treated with antidepressants, compared to a healthy control group of subjects and if there was an association between increased CRP levels and the presence of MetS in these two groups. Methods. Sixty subjects entered the study; of these 35 patients with the diagnosis of recurrent depressive disorder, while the healthy control group included 25 subjects. MetS was defined according to the NCEP ATP III criteria. The cut-off point for CRP was set at >5 mg /L. Results. There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of MetS and CRP values between the studied groups. Waist circumference and total cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the experimental group. Patients that fulfilled the criteria for MetS showed significantly higher values of central obesity and arterial hypertension in the experimental group as well. The elevated CRP levels were associated with increased frequency of MetS in depressed patients. Conclusion. Both CRP levels and metabolic risk profile screening, according to the international criteria, may be beneficial in order to obtain better assessment for depressive long term medicated patients.

Background. Hypercoagulation is one of the cardiovascular risk factors in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). It results from various factors including hyperhomocysteinemia, endothelial dysfunction, non-enzymatic glycation of proteins etc.The aim of this study was to assess clinical correlates of thrombodynamics in insulin resistant and non insulin resistant men with metabolic syndrome.Methods. We investigated 79 patients with MS diagnosed in accordance with IDF criteria (2009). The main group consisted of 44 men with MS including insulin resistance. The control group consisted of 35 men with MS not including insulin resistance. In addition to routine clinical tests we performed thrombodynamics assay and measured serum levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and homocysteine. Mann-Whitney U-test and Spearmen’s correlation coefficient (rs) were used for statistical analysis.Results. There was no significant difference between thrombodynamics parameters, ADMA and homocysteine levels between the two groups. In both groups thrombodynamics parameters had no correlations with body mass index, hemoglobin level, platelet count and serum ADMA level. In patients with insulin resistance clot density correlated positively with serum level of C-reactive protein (rs=0.621, p=0.007); average and initial rates of clot growth correlated positively with homocysteine level (rs=0.539, p=0.017, and rs=0.554, p=0.014, respectively). In patients with insulin resistance clot density and rates of clot growth were not interrelated with the above mentioned parameters.Conclusions. The results of the study suggest that insulin resistant men with MS are characterized by clinical correlates between thrombodynamics parameters, homocysteine and C-reactive protein levels while patients without insulin resistance have other, unestablished determinants of clot density and rates of clot growth.

Automobile spray painters are often prone to chemical toxicity due to their routine work. This study was aimed at the occupational effect of spray painting fumes on some biochemical parameters in automobile spray painters. Five milliliters of blood specimen were collected into lithium heparin anti-coagulated bottles from twenty five automobile spray painters with ≤ 10 years working experience (experimental group one), ≥ 11 years working experience (experimental group two) and non-automobile spray painters which were monitored as control group respectively. After this, plasma alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, C-reactive protein, urea and creatinine were measured quantitatively using a spectrophotometer. The mean values of all the measured biochemical parameters showed no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) in the automobile spray painters with ≤ 10 years working experience as compared with that of the control group with the exception of plasma C-reactive protein, while those with ≥ 11 years working experience showed statistically significant differences (p<0.05) in plasma alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and C-reactive protein however, the plasma urea and creatinine showed no statistically significant differences (p>0.05). In conclusion, the concentration of plasma alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and C-reactive protein may be altered in automobile spray painters with ≥ 11 years working experience, thus these biochemical parameters should be monitored regularly in spray painters within this category of working experience

This study was aimed on the biochemical and histomorphological study of abuse in the consumption of alabukun powder in Rattus norvegicus rats. Five milliliter of blood specimen was collected into lithium heparin bottles from seven rats weighing 240±2g respectively with each of them administered with 0.2mg/kg alabukun powder daily for a period of two weeks (experimental group) while another seven rats weighing 240±2g each were not administered with alabukun powder (control group). Thereafter alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and C-reactive protein were measured quantitatively in both groups of rats. The mean values of all the measured biochemical parameters in Rattus norvegicus rats in the experimental group were statistically significant (p<0.05) as compared to that in the control group. This established biochemical finding was in conformity with the histomorphological examination of the kidney and liver organs. In conclusion, this study has established that administration of 0.2mg/kg of alabukun powder on daily basis for a period of two weeks on Rattus norvegicus rats may induce hepato-renal and inflammatory disorders. It is thus recommended that consumption of alabukun powder by humans should strictly be in compliance with its prescription. However, kidney, liver and inflammatory biomarkers should be quantitatively measured in humans that have abused its consumption with a view to ascertain their health status and prevent any deleterious risks.

Aim. To study clinical, medical history and paraclinical characteristics of patients with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).Material and methods. The study included 209 patients with NSTEMI who were admitted to the Demikhov City Clinical Hospital (Moscow). The patients were divided into 2 groups: the experimental one (n=104)  — those after COVID-19, the control one (n=105)  — those without history of COVID-19. All patients underwent routine diagnostic investigations in accordance with current standards and clinical guidelines.Results. The mean age of patients in the experimental group was 61,8±12,2 years, while in the control one — 69,0±13,0 years (p<0,0001). Myocardial infarction developed 49 days [34.0; 82.0] after COVID-19. Prior exertional angina was observed in 76,9% of patients in the experimental group and in 88,6% in the control one (χ2 =4,97; p=0,0258). The level of C-reactive protein in the experimental group was 19,2 mg/l [4,9; 53,0], and in the control one — 5,6 mg/l [0,4; 21,8] (p=0,0007). The average troponin I level in the experimental group was 2,7 ng/ml [1,3; 8,0], while in the control one — 1,8 ng/ml [0,8; 3,5] (p=0,0091).Conclusion. Patients with NSTEMI after COVID-19 were significantly younger compared to patients without a history of COVID-19. They had less common exertional angina prior to MI, while C-reactive protein and troponin I levels were significantly higher than in the control group. In addition, in NSTEMI patients after COVID-19, the estimated pulmonary artery systolic pressure was significantly higher compared to patients without a history of COVID-19.

This study was aimed on assessment of selected biochemical parameters among food hawkers along the streets of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Five milliliter of blood specimen was collected from fifteen food hawkers with ≤ 5 years working experience (experimental group one), ≥ 5 years working experience (experimental group two) and nonfood hawkers (control group) respectively into lithium heparin anti-coagulated bottles. Thereafter alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and C-reactive protein were measured quantitatively. The mean values of volunteers in experimental group one showed no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) in alanine aminotransferase (7.46 ± 1.02), aspartate aminotransferase (7.02 ± 0.86), urea (7.70 ± 1.29) and creatinine (70.44 ± 3.54) as compared with the control group (7.42 ± 0.98), (6.98 ± 0.82), (7.65 ± 1.28) and (70.40 ± 3.52) respectively, but there was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in C-reactive protein (17.40 ± 1.98) when compared with the control group (2.70 ± 0.70). However, the mean values of food hawkers in experimental group two showed statistically significant difference (p< 0.05) in all the measured biochemical parameters 27.70±2.98, 21.40±2.06, 15.50±2.02, 110.70±3.74, 29.42±3.20 as compared with that of the control group 7.42±0.98, 6.98±0.82, 7.65±1.28, 70.40±3.52, 2.74±0.70. The volunteers in experimental groups one and two showed 13% -27% and 53% -80% abnormal values of the measured biochemical parameters respectively as compared with that of the control group. In conclusion, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, urea, creatinine and C-reactive protein may be altered in food hawkers with ≥ 5 years working experience. It is therefore recommended that food hawkers in this category should go for hepato-renal and inflammatory biochemical parameters checkup occasionally in any registered and licensed Medical Laboratory Facility.

Introduction. There are data on the effects of dust on the respiratory system and the cardiovascular system. The main measures for preventing diseases of the circulatory system aimed to identify and eliminate risk factors. However, the prevalence of risk factors for coronary heart disease among coal mine workers with anthracosilicosis has not been sufficiently studied, determining the study's relevance. The study aimed to learn the frequency of risk factors for coronary heart disease in coal industry workers with anthracosilicosis. Materials and methods. We examined 269 miners working in conditions of dustiness exceeding the maximum permissible concentration by ten or more times: 139 miners with a previously established diagnosis of anthracosilicosis and 130 miners of the control group without dust pathology of the lungs. All of them underwent a comprehensive clinical, instrumental, and laboratory examination of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems to detect anthracosilicosis and coronary heart disease, as well as to assess its risk factors. Results. In miners with anthracosilicosis, coronary heart disease was 3.5 times more common (30.94%) than in the control group (8.46%). We have identified a high incidence of coronary heart disease in the age group of 45 and more years and with the experience of working in dust conditions of 20 and more years. In miners with anthracosilicosis combined with coronary heart disease, arterial hypertension was 1.6 times more common (58.14%) than without concomitant coronary heart disease - 35.42%. Miners with a combination of anthracosilicosis and coronary heart disease were three times more likely (20.93%) than those without coronary heart disease (6.25%) to have a metabolic syndrome. According to the Tanner index, significant risk factors for coronary heart disease were the presence of an andromorphic constitutional-morphological type and the formation of a complication of anthracosilicosis - respiratory failure. The evaluation of biochemical blood tests showed that the most significant markers of coronary heart disease risk were hyperhomocysteinemia, increased levels of C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and soluble fibrin-monomer complexes. Conclusions. We found that the most significant risk of developing coronary heart disease in miners is 45 years and older. There are also other risk factors: work experience in harmful working conditions of 20 years or more; the presence of arterial hypertension; metabolic syndrome; andromorphic constitutional-morphological type according to the Tanner index. Risk factors are respiratory failure, hyperhomocysteinemia, hyperfibrinogenemia, increased soluble fibrin-monomer complexes, and C - reactive protein. It is necessary to consider all risks in developing programs of medical and preventive measures for employees of the coal industry.

Background: Metabolic Syndrome is a constellation of dyslipidemia (elevated triglycerides, low high-density lipoproteins (HDL)), elevation of arterial blood pressure (BP), dysregulated glucose homeostasis, and increased abdominal obesity.Methods: We studied the association of high sensitivity C-reactive protein with metabolic syndrome by case-control method in our tertiary care hospital in West U.P.Results: The mean age of cases and controls was 52.6 ± 7.7 and 51.4±7.0 years, respectively. There were 25 (50%) male and 25 (50%) female in case groups, and 27 (54%) males and 23 (46%) females in control group. Our analysis revelaed that there was a significant association between hs-CRP and the central obesity when compared in case-control group (3.57 vs 0.96 mg/L) (p value <0.001). There was no significant association between hs-CRP and high triglycerides, hypertension, diabetes, and reduced high density lipoprotein cholesterol.Conclusions: Raised hsCRP level can be considered as a surrogate marker of chronic inflammation in patients with metabolic syndrome.

Objective: To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effectiveness of celecoxib and its effect on the rehabilitation of joint function after total knee arthroplasty. Methods: 72 patients presented between 2016 and 2017 and were divided into two groups. The experimental group was given 200 mg celecoxib twice daily with tramadol hydrochloride 50 mg twice daily (as required); the control group was given tramadol hydrochloride 50 mg twice daily for 6 weeks from the first day after total knee arthroplasty. Skin temperature around the knee was measured 1 day before surgery, on postoperative days 1 and 3, and at weeks 1, 2, and 6. Inflammatory markers (white blood cell count, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and interleukin-6) were measured preoperatively, on postoperative day 3, and at weeks 1 and 6. Knee Society Score was recorded preoperatively and at postoperative weeks 1, 2, and 6. Results: Except for preoperative skin temperature, the recorded skin temperatures of the experimental group were significantly different compared to those of the control group (p = 0.001, 0.024, 0.030, 0.041, 0.047, respectively). Levels of C-reactive protein were significantly different at the 1st and the 6th week after surgery, differing by 19.3 ± 4.64 mg/L (p < 0.001) and 2.6 ± 0.92 mg/L (p = 0.006). Levels of interleukin-6 showed a significant difference of 6.61 ± 2.36 pg/mL (p = 0.007) at the 1st week after surgery. Until the 6th week after surgery, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate in the experimental group and the control group differed by 17 ± 4.6 mm/h (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Celecoxib has a significant inhibitory effect on postoperative aseptic inflammation.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive autoimmune disease with variable clinical symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral training on C-reactive protein (CRP) and depression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: This research was a semi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and a control group. The statistical population of this study involved all women suffering from rheumatoid arthritis who went to Iran Rheumatology Center. From among them, 60 individuals were randomly selected and consigned to the control and experimental groups. The control group received only medication, and an educational package about rheumatoid arthritis provided for them. Beck’s depression and biochemical evaluations questionnaires were used to measure dependent variables. To analyze the data, multivariate analysis of covariance and SPSS. 22 software were used. Results: The mean (SD) of depression in the experimental group in the pretest was 25.5 (3.8), which decreased to 18.9 (4.2) in the post-test (P<0.01), but the mean (SD) of the control group was not statistically significant. Also, the mean (SD) of the CRP in the experimental group was 27.3 (6.9) in the pretest, which increased to 22.8 (4.6) in the post-test (P<0.01), but the mean (SD) of the control group was not statistically significant. Conclusion: This research revealed that cognitive behavioral training led to a reduction of CRP and depression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
