Prevalence of malnutrition in Indonesia is still high although it has some potential source of nutrients. Seluang fish (Rasbora spp.) is a river fish consumed by the people of South Kalimantan, Indonesia. This study analyzed the improvement of nutritional status in the malnourished rats after treatment with Seluang Fish. The study used malnourished white rats (Rattus norvegicus) using a low protein and fat diet for 8 weeks. The rats were divided into three groups; malnourished group (M) without other dietary treatment, standard diet (P1) and seluang diet (P2) for a period of four weeks. The malnourished group was sacrificed first, and after four weeks treatment, other groups were sacrificed; blood and bones were taken for weight, protein levels, hemoglobin levels, bone length, bone calcium levels and IGF-1 levels. The results showed that the average of body weight for all the studied groups ranged between 190 to 220g. Seluang diet had the highest serum protein levels (4.388 mg/dL), hemoglobin (19.7 mg/dL) and IGF levels (388.7 ng/mL). Standard diet had the longest bone length (3.547 cm) and the highest Calcium levels of 1.68 mg/g. Based on these results, it was concluded that Seluang fish may have the potential to improve the nutritional status of malnourished rats.

Introduction: Dyslipidemia is a major health problem in Indonesia which leads to other diseases. Triglycerides (TG) is one of the increased lipid fractions which is related to dyslipidemia. Simvastatin is the main therapy in Indonesia to lower TG levels. The use of virgin coconut oil (VCO) becomes popular as a blood cholesterol-lowering agent even though the effects on TG level remains elusive. Since there is no empirical evidence VCO as a complementary therapy of simvastatin on TG levels, this experimental trial is conducted to determine the effect of simvastatin and VCO combination therapy on blood TG levels in dyslipidemic male white rats. Methods: 42 white rats (Rattus norvegicus) divided into 5 treatment groups and preliminary test of dyslipidemia. The blood was collected intracardially and TG level was measured by using spectrophotometric methods. Independent variables are simvastatin and VCO and combination therapy while the dependent variable is TG levels of white rats. The data was afterwards analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The control group’s triglyceride plasma level, receiving standard diet, is 59±13,4 mg/dl. The VCO-only group shows 72±35,4 mg/dl while simvastatin-only group shows 61,9±22,6 mg/dl triglyceride level. Combination therapy of simvastatin and VCO shows 62,3±31,3 mg/dl (p>0,05).Conclusion: There were no significant differences between groups with control. However, the use of VCO with particular dose and duration of therapy, will significantly decrease triglyceride level in the blood as effective as simvastatin. VCO has no efficacy while used as combination therapy of simvastatin.

Obesity and metabolic syndrom are characterized by dislipidemia. One of methods that is performed to increase body fat contents is by intaking of high-fat diet. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effect of a dietary intake of high-fat on the lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triacylglycerol) in white rat (Rattus norvegicus). This research was tested on 30 white rats that were divided into 2 randomized groups, and were treated for 4 weeks. Group 1 (K1) : was treated with standard diet, (K2) : with standard and high-fat diet. The results showed that intaking high-fat diet increases the total cholesterol content, triacylglycerol, LDL cholesterol, and decreases HDL cholesterol content.

We aimed to determine whether serum leptin levels are predictive of the occurrence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in hospitalized older patients. In a prospective cohort, 232 patients had available data for leptin and were monitored for HAIs for 3 months. Admission data included comorbidities, invasive procedures, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), BMI, leptin, albumin and C-reactive protein levels, and CD4 and CD8 T-cell counts. Multivariate logistic regression modelling was used to identify predictors of HAIs. Of the 232 patients (median age: 84.8; females: 72.4%), 89 (38.4%) experienced HAIs. The leptin level was associated with the BMI (p < 0.0001) and MNA (p < 0.0001) categories. Women who experienced HAIs had significantly lower leptin levels than those who did not (5.9 μg/L (2.6–17.7) and 11.8 (4.6–26.3), respectively; p = 0.01; odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval): 0.67 (0.49–0.90)); no such association was observed for men. In a multivariate analysis of the women, a lower leptin level was significantly associated with HAIs (OR = 0.70 (0.49–0.97)), independently of comorbidities, invasive medical procedures, and immune status. However, leptin was not significantly associated with HAIs after adjustments for malnutrition (p = 0.26) or albuminemia (p = 0.15)—suggesting that in older women, the association between serum leptin levels and subsequent HAIs is mediated by nutritional status.

Dyslipidemia is an abnormal lipid metabolism which may cause fat degeneration on hepatocytes cells and elevated triglyceride serum level. Dyslipidemia can be prevented by the consumption of high antioxidant food. Noni(Morinda citrifolia) contains many antioxidant such as flavanoid, kuersetin, tannin, and saponin, which are able to prohibit the elevation of ROS.This research is aimed to find out the effect of noni(Morinda citrifolia) extract in reducing the number of hepatocyte’s cells with fat degeneration and decreasing the triglyceride level which is elevated due to high cholesterol diet induction. In this study white rats divided randomly into 4 groups, control group (K-), high cholesterol diet induced group (K+), high cholesterol diet induced with 100 mg/Kg BW noni extract group (P1), high cholesterol diet induced with 200 mg/Kg BW noni extract group (P2). The result shows that noni  extract with dose 100 mg/Kg BW and  200 mg/Kg BWcan reduce the number of hepatocytes cells with fat degeneration (p= 0,026 and p=0,027) and decrease the level of triglyceride serum (p=0,036 and p=0,010).The conclusion is noni extract with dose 100 mg/KgBW reduces effectively  the number of hepatocyte’s cells with fat degeneration and decreases the level of triglyceride serum which increase because of high cholesterol diet.

Consumption of liquor such as Ciu in excessive doses can cause a decrease in hematological status. Balimo stem is an alternative treatment to improve hematological status due to excessive alcohol consumption because it contains alkaloids, flavonoids, and other secondary metabolic compounds, that have functions as antioxidant effects. This study aims to examine and analyze the effect of Balimo immersion water on the hematological status of mice with the observed variables, namely the erythrocytes count, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit value, and total count of leukocytes in rats that had been given Ciu. The study used 20 Rattus norvegicus male rats which were divided into 4 groups. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The results showed no significant differences (p <0.05) on the Balimo immersion water treatment, but if it was seen from the difference in the mean data of each variable, it could still be seen the difference from each treatment. In this study, it can be concluded that Balimo immersion water was able to improve the hematological status of rats that had been given Ciu liquor with a 0,2 mL dose.
