The article considers the features of modern Western literature in postcolonial discourse. Emphasis is placed on researches that have formed the basis for understanding the phenomenon of multiculturalism in modern humanities. In this context, the concept of transculturation as a new worldview and a way of polemics with multiculturalism has been analyzed and the leading ideas have been singled out: „borderline identity”, hybridity, ambivalence, etc. The modern European literature is characterized as an artistic representation of the mentioned concepts, the so-called „borderline consciousness”, which underlies the hybrid worldview. The authors consider the phenomenon of cross-cultural (multicultural, transcultural) or postcolonial novel as one of the brightest phenomena of modern literary discourse. The dominant of creative work of cross-cultural authors is the identity crisis inherent in both the author and his or her character. In the proposed dimension, the work of immigrant authors in general and S. Rushdie’s novels in particular are considered as an artistic actualization of the theory of cultural hybridity, and the narrative of life „on the border” is defined as the most notable artistic strategy of modern literature.

It is a study of literary interaction questions and the identification of mutual enrichment patterns that currently acquire particular significance. The concept of foreign literary experience becomes ever more profound and diverse and is realized by a creative rethinking (not imitation or adoption) of another literature’s achievements. This paper aims to identify the profound influence of world literature on Tolstoy and vice-versa: the influence his creative works had on European literature. The paper shows the need to study the originality of Tolstoy’s artistic legacy’s foreign reception and, therefore, complement the overall picture of perception and functioning of the writer’s creation in the foreign literary context and cultural environment. The study of this theme is very significant from the standpoint of modern globalization, dialogue between cultures. The novelty here lies in the fact that the question of how Tolstoy’s works have been received within the context of creative cross-cultural dialogue has not been given sufficient attention within international comparative studies. There is no systematizing and summarizing research in the national science about a writer’s perception and peculiarities of appraisal of writer’s works involving the Azerbaijani studies material, drawing parallels with the national literature. For this consideration of Tolstoy’s work, the conception of Azerbaijani prose writing is taken to represent a World literary context. The outstanding playwright Elchin Efendiyev had due regard for Tolstoy’s creative work and his particular creative perception of the world. This work’s theoretical purpose is to develop a scientific paper that will expand understanding of the reception of an outstanding writer’s creative work by a western creative consciousness and will present a picture of international cultural ties.

This chapter proposes that a proper telos for the study of religion is Critical Humanism. Drawing on Aristotle and Charles Taylor, it explains how Critical Humanism provides a theoretical framework for studying religion and describes its mobile, liberal, dialogical, and inclusive aspects. Building on the ideas of Felski, Walzer, Rorty, and the environmental humanities, it notes how Critical Humanism places a premium on expanding the moral imagination and examines the connections between that idea and humanistic scholarship. That discussion leads into an account of four values to which the study of religion can be connected: post-critical reasoning, social criticism, cross-cultural fluency, and environmental responsibility. The chapter then describes four works in the study of religion that exemplify these values. Lastly, it summarizes the chapter’s arguments in response to the challenges posed by Weber’s view of science and Welch’s reckoning with the field’s “identity crisis” as described in chapters 1 and 2.

The authors set objectives to identify the typological features of national literature in the work of Muliat Emizh of the late 20 - early 21 centuries, which determine the study of the problem-thematic content, the evolution of the conflict and genre forms of artistic phenomena. The authors establish the strengthening of the problematic nature and attempts to deepen the concept of personality in the collections "Returned Songs", "The Mysterious Sign", "Mountain Lake", etc. The movement towards artistic volume and concentration of poetic means is noted. The influence of folklore and literary traditions on the formation of genre forms of poetry is determined. The reliance on historical-literary and comparative-typological methods makes it possible to draw a conclusion about the reflection in the work of M. Emizh of such features of contemporary literature as liberation from declarativity, journalistic pleonasm and solemnity. This work may be in demand in the study of theoretical problems of the formation of Russian literature of the twentieth century.

The article is devoted to the problem of nonfiction in modern Ukrainian literature. The author, based on books by domestic writers about the Revolution of Dignity and the war in the East, in particular the works of B. Humeniuk, M. Mathios, N. Rozlutsky, etc., considers the literature of fact as a separate kind of modern literature, analyzes its features in the context of similar publications. for the further consistent "fitting" of the concept into the latest literary paradigm. Such works appeared in the array of military prose for the first time, but are still one of the most popular authors and societies of publications. In terms of genre, they are eclectic - they combine diary and Facebook entries, autobiographical details, journalism, short prose and poetry; the plot is based on real events with a slight touch of art. Such texts are also characterized by heightened emotionality, as most of the authors of non-fiction texts are eyewitnesses and active participants in the Revolution of Dignity in the war in eastern Ukraine. Nonfiction texts have led to various discussions about terminological use, as well as the correspondence between the concepts of «factual literature», «documentary», «factual literature», «nonfiction» and so on. Some domestic researchers use all these terms as synonyms, considering them phenomena of the same order, meaning unimagined literature about reality. Also in the material it is convincingly proved that today's numerical advantage of documentary over fiction is not ganja, but a characteristic feature of modern literature. The work is based on scientific principles of modern history and theory of literature, it combines descriptive, historical-biographical, comparative-historical (to compare different types of characters and track the dynamics of individual images), available elements of hermeneutic method, narrative and intertextual analysis.

The article deals with the study of L. Lunts' report «Go West!» in the context of the leading ideas of the literary discussion of 1925–1928. L. Lunts was a theorist of the Russian literary collective «Brothers Serapions», his literary-critical articles represent such depth and perspectives that were ahead of his time. In the article by O. Kryzhanovska, it turns out that reflections on the ways of development of modern Russian literature turned out to be consonant with many world literatures, in particular Ukrainian. Report by L. Lunts «Go West!» (1922) fully represents his creative convictions and reveals much in common with the main vectors of the literary discussion of 1925-1928. The article proves that L. Lunts's article «Go West!» allows us to see the commonality of those artistic and aesthetic searches that existed in the 1920s in Ukrainian and Russian literature and represented the European vector of artistic landmarks. L. Lunts positioned himself as a «Western» writer. He emphasized the need to turn modern literature to the traditions of the West, in particular, to the tradition of fable prose. In the report «Go West!» the author notes that the provinciality of Russian literature is manifested in a dismissive attitude to the plot, to intrigue and an interesting plot. O. Kryzhanovska proved that under the dramatic plot L. Lunts understood the presence of such effective techniques that allow the viewer to arouse interest and emotional reaction. L. Lunts calls all modern literature boring and illiterate. The author insistently encourages writers to study Western literature and orient themselves towards Western traditions. O. Kryzhanovska proved that in two years the ideas of L. Lunts were consonant with the main dominant of the literary discussion of 1925-1928 in Ukraine. The conviction of the need to assimilate European artistic experience, get rid of the provincial and secondary, the call to learn from the world's best artists demonstrates the typological similarity of the views of such authors as Lev Lunts, Mykola Khvylovy and Mykola Zerov.

The article is focused mainly on aesthetic-philosophical constants of the work of art of Julius Zeyer. The author of the article tries to point out that Zeyer´s conception of art is tightly connected with artistic conceptions of the rising literary symbolistic generation: His aesthetic-philosophical system contains strong protest against rationalism, realism and naturalism in contemporary literature and underlines the way to subconscious roots of human existence; it turns away from rational understanding of the world and the mystical intuition of inner and organic life in modern literature. In the article the motifs of temple building and motifs of creating the organic picture of the world in Zeyer´s work of art are analysed. The article also contains main references to Zeyer´s work of art published by reputable names of the Czech and European literary criticism.

Polish musicologist and author Danuta Gwizdalanka titled her publication Mieczysław Wajnberg: kompozytor z trzech światów [Mieczysław Weinberg: Composer from Three Worlds] (Poznań, 2013). Weinberg (1919–1996) was a Polish composer with Jewish roots who spent most of his life in the USSR. Without any doubt, he can be called ‘a composer from the borderland’ due to his ‘hybrid identity’, which was one of the most important reasons that affected the appreciation of Weinberg’s output both during his lifetime and after death. The main ideas of this paper centre on the category of ‘borderland’ and its representations in Weinberg’s biography and oeuvre. According to the typology proposed by Krzysztof Zajas, Weinberg’s life and works can be considered in terms of the following types of borderland: interdisciplinary, spatial, psychological, existential, sociological, and mythological. Through the prism of the category of ‘borderland’, Weinberg’s creative work manifests itself as a highly individual and invaluable testimony of his times, Far from eclectic and epigonic in relation to the music of Dmitri Shostakovich, his oeuvre is unique in the world’s music literature.
