Aceh Province has the largest habitat for Sumatran elephant. However, the elephant population in the province keeps decreasing due to frequent conflict with humans. This study aimed to observe the trend and pattern of Human-elephant Conflict (HEC) in Aceh, as well as the main causes driving the conflict. To collect information, we carried out desk study, secondary data collection, and interviews with relevant actors in Aceh Jaya, Pidie, and Aceh Timur District. We collected data of HEC during the 2012-2017 period in 16 districts across Aceh. The result shows that during the six years, there were 262 HEC cases occurred in Aceh, where Aceh Timur and Aceh Jaya contributed the highest number of HEC incidence, with 47 and 44 cases respectively. Maximum Entropy analysis shows that the main factor causing the conflict is “Distance from the human settlement” with 84.7% contribution, followed by “Primary forest loss” (14.1% contribution). From the findings, we suggest reforestation in areas that becomes elephant home range and creation of barriers within the conservation forest boundaries. Moreover, HEC mitigation action should also be incorporated in provincial spatial planning (Rencana Tata Ruang Wilayah - Provinsi) to minimize further economic loss and wildlife extinction.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the habitat characteristics of the Sumatran Elephant in the Serbajadi District Forest. Data collection by looking at the use of habitat which is characterized by the distribution of faeces found in various habitat units in the home range of the Sumatran Elephant. The method used is observation with a track with a size of 3,600 m which is divided into 20 observation plots with a distance between plots of 100 m. The data obtained in the field were analyzed descriptively and presented in tabular form. The results of this study indicate that the Habitat Characteristics of the Sumatran Elephant in the Serbajadi District Forest chose habitat units with very dense canopy cover (>75%), moderate feed availability (26-50%), rare mineral source trees availability (< 3 trees/plot). availability of sparse scrubbing trees (<3 trees/plot), close to primary forest (0-500 m), low land elevation (0- 400 masl), gentle slope (0-20°), close to water sources (0-250m). Secondary forest/vegetation type and frequency of habitat use based on the findings of faeces that the Sumatran elephant most frequently visited was secondary forest than primary forest because the secondary forest was for feeding activities while the primary forest was used for resting and reproduction.

We have studied human-elephant interactions in the northern transboundary of Bangladesh and estimated the scale of associated damage due to the negative interaction by visiting conflict area, performing focus group discussions key informant interviews and using secondary data sources. Around 70-80 non-resident elephants regularly intruded to the study area through the international border fence using several trespassing points and engaged in conflicts with frontier villagers. We discussed the nature and scale of conflict and the financial losses due to the conflict. Besides severe casualties in both ends, the enumerated economic loss was USD 1,171, 665 in 2013 and 2014 due to the damage to cropland, houses and properties, trees and orchards. We have identified major human-elephant conflict (HEC) zones adjacent to the border fence through spatial analysis with different level of intensity. Appropriate human-elephant conflict mitigation measures such as habitat improvement and management, monitoring of elephant population, alternative income generation, awareness programs for the local people and working together with India regarding this issue is a timely and urgent need for Bangladesh

Meureudu Riparian in the past was a place of a collective settlements; it was then developed  to become a Meureudu City in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Initially, it was formed as traditional fishermen settlements but now has shifted into semi-modern settlements. However, the settlements developed sporadically to form an unplanned pattern of settlements. This condition resulted in low maintaining river and non-adaptive existence of the dwellings with the environment. Floods occur repeatedly in the river that affected great lost to the community. This study aimed to propose residential pattern design and adaptive settlements with Meureudu River riparian. Easy access roads to markets will facilitate economy growth to the people. This will also cause large numbers of unbridled migrants to enter and build settlements. In this study the a combination of quantitative methods based on interview data and questionnaires and qualitative exploratory methods based on field observation were used. The data were collected through observation, field measurement and secondary data sources. The results show that the condition of settlements along the river basin do not reflect the culture of the river. In order not to further aggravate the condition of the settlement and its impact on the occupants, we recommended two types of houses, namely in the form of stage and non-stage. The stage houses are located on the riverfront with an orientation overlooking the river. Additionally, undersea area can be used as security from the puddle of river water runoff during the flood and as a garden area and public while dry­­, while at a distance of 100 meters from the river non-stage houses form would be built because the runoff of flood water no longer affects the occupancy.

Abstract The Asian elephant Elephas maximus is at risk of extinction as a result of anthropogenic pressures, and remaining populations are often small and fragmented remnants, occupying a fraction of the species' former range. Once widely distributed across China, only a maximum of 245 elephants are estimated to survive across seven small populations. We assessed the Asian elephant population in Nangunhe National Nature Reserve in Lincang Prefecture, China, using camera traps during May–July 2017, to estimate the population size and structure of this genetically important population. Although detection probability was low (0.31), we estimated a total population size of c. 20 individuals, and an effective density of 0.39 elephants per km2. Social structure indicated a strong sex ratio bias towards females, with only one adult male detected within the population. Most of the elephants associated as one herd but three adult females remained separate from the herd throughout the trapping period. These results highlight the fragility of remnant elephant populations such as Nangunhe and we suggest options such as a managed metapopulation approach for their continued survival in China and more widely.

Dampak praktik Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUUF) telah mengakibatkan terganggunya pengelolaan pemanfaatan perikanan yang berkelanjutan dan menimbulkan kerugian ekonomi. Praktik mark down ukuran kapal penangkapan ikan merupakan salah satu penyalahgunaan perizinan dalam konteks praktik IUUF. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji nilai kerugian sumber daya ikan (deplesi sumber daya) akibat praktik “mark down” ukuran kapal penangkap ikan yang dilakukan di Indonesia. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan Maret – April 2017 bersifat ‘desk study’ dan dilengkapi dengan kajian literature terkait. Data sekunder dan primer digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Analisis data dilakukan melalui Pendekatan Surplus Produksi Model Schaefer digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Nilai kerugian sumber daya ikan diketahui berdasarkan nilai deplesinya. Nilai deplesi sumber daya menggunakan pendekatan The Net Price Method. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adanya praktik “mark down” telah menyebabkan deplesi sumber daya ikan atau pengurangan aset sumber daya ikan di perairan Indonesia. Besarnya nilai deplesi sumber daya pada tahun 2015 mencapai 9,83 trilyun rupiah dan diprediksi pada tahun 2020 meningkat menjadi 14,55 trilyun rupiah. Kajian merekomendasikan perlunya percepatan pengukuran ulang kapal perikanan dan penerapan sangsi yang tegas terhadap pelanggar sehingga tata kelola pemanfaatan sumber daya perikanan tangkap yang baik yang mampu mewujudkan pengelolaan perikanan yang berkelanjutan di Indonesia. Tittle: Fish Resources Losses Due to Mark Down Fishing Vessel Practiced in IndonesiaThe impact of IUU fishing has resulted in management disorder of sustainable fisheries and it caused economic loss. Markdown in vessels size is one type of manipulation practices of license in IUU fishing. This study aims to analyze the loss value of fish resources (resource depletion) due to the “markdown” practices in Indonesia. The study was basically a desk study completmenting with relevant literatures review during March – April 2015. Primary and secondary data were used in this study. Data were analyzed using the Schaefer surplus production model approached. Loss value of fish resources was estimated in terms of depletion resource value using the Net Price Method. The research found that “mark down” has led to depletion or reduction of fish resources in Indonesian waters. The estimated value of resource depletion in 2015 reached 9.83 trillion rupiahs and it is predicted to rise into 14.55 trillion rupiahs in 2020. The research suggests the need to accelerate the process of re-measuring the size of fishing vessel as well as to impose sanctions for the disobedience of the rules, so that Indonesia could have a good governance in fisheries resource management with sustainable fisheries resources.

Millions of children and adolescents in Indonesia today still show a high number of premature death in children who are moderately malnourished and severely malnourished. The research objective was to calculate the estimated economic losses potential due to underweight among toddlers in Indonesia. This was a descriptive research by analyzing secondary data of nutritional status and socio-economic indicators in 2013 from the Indonesian Ministry of Health and Central Statistical Agency. The formula to calculate potential economic loss is based on Konig’s formula (1995) and the correction factor from research by Horton (1999). The results showed that the average economic loss in 32 provinces in Indonesia is approximately IDR 93 billion – IDR 417 billion, which seen from the GRDP percentage, the economic loss due to a decrease in productivity amounted to 2% and 9% or about 0.1–0.7% of the average GRDP of the provinces in Indonesia. Nationally, economic losses due to low productivity in underweight toddlers reach IDR 3,054 billion – IDR 13,746 billion (0.04–0.2%) of Indonesia’s total GDP. The results of this study are expected to show that the importance of this issue was handled and can assist the government in planning for health and nutrition programs targeted to human resources in Indonesia qualifi ed and productive.

ENGLISHDecision of being woman migrant workers brings both positive and negative consequeces for the woman workers as well as their families live behind. This study aimed: (1) to describe the decision making of being migrant workers among the applicants of woman migrant workers from Pati District; (2) to explain the factors correlate to the migrate decision making, and (3) to explain factors correlate to destination country choosing. It used quantitave approach. The primary data were obtained by spreading questionnaires among women migrant worker applicants at four labour supply companies. Meanwhile the secondary data get through desk review. Then, the data were analysed descriptively using chi square and correspondence analysis. The study resulted: (1) economic was the main factor of decision making for being woman migrant workers; (2) the factors correlated to the decision making for being woman migrant workers were the position in household, previous income, and decision making process; (3) high salary was the main factor on choosing the destination country. The factors correlated to destination country preferences were: the reasons for choosing the destination countries, age, previous job, previous salary, and husband’s age. INDONESIAKeputusan menjadi pekerja migran perempuan dapat berkonsekuensi positif maupun negatif bagi pekerja migran maupun keluarga yang ditinggalkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan: (1) menggambarkan pengambilan keputusan menjadi pekerja migran perempuan pada calon pekerja migran di Kabupaten Pati; (2) mendeskripsikan faktor yang berhubungan dengan pengambilan keputusan; dan (3) mendeskripsikan faktor yang berhubungan dengan pemilihan negara tujuan. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Data primer didapatkan melalui pengisian kuesioner oleh para calon pekerja migran perempuan di empat PPTKIS. Sementara data sekunder didapatkan melalui review penelitian terdahulu dan dokumen yang relevan. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif menggunakan chi square dan analisis korespondensi. Hasil penelitian adalah: (1) ekonomi adalah faktor utama pengambilan keputusan menjadi pekerja migran perempuan; (2) faktor yang berhubungan dengan pengambilan keputusan menjadi pekerja migran adalah posisi dalam rumah tangga, pendapatan sebelumnya, dan proses pengambilan keputusan; (3) gaji yang tinggi merupakan alasan utama pemilihan negara tujuan migrasi. Adapun faktor yang berhubungan dengan pemilihan negara tujuan migrasi adalah alasan pemilihan negara, usia, pekerjaan sebelumnya, pendapatan sebelumnya, dan usia suami.

The research aims to analyze the influence of Capital Expenditure on the original income and its impact on Local Government Financial Performance This research refers to a previous research’s conducted by Fajar Nugroho (2012). Objects of this research are the entire district and city in Aceh province. The research was carried out by the method of documentation. The data used are secondary data, which comes from the realization of the Budget Report Revenue and Expenditure of the district and the city in Aceh province from 2009 until 2012. The results of this study indicate that the Capital Expenditures negatively affect of the region's financial performance directly, whereas indirect positive effect on Capital Spending Growth through Revenue Financial Performance as an intervening variable region. The results of this study indicate that the capital expenditureeffect on the Local original income, Local original income effect on financial performance, capital expenditures does not affect on the financial performance directly, while indirectly capital expenditureeffect on financial performance through local original income.

This study investigated the distribution and habitat selection of the globally threatened East Coast Akalat Sheppardia gunningi sokokensis in Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, the Shimba Hills (both Kenya) and the lowland East Usambara Mountains (Tanzania). The species is more abundant than originally thought. In Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, akalats occur in two of the main vegetation types, and an estimated 7,500–9,000 territories represent one of the largest populations of this species in the world. Akalats occurred at similar densities to those in Arabuko-Sokoke (c. 0.5 pairs/ha) in parts of Shimba Hills and East Usambaras, but were more patchily distributed. This akalat prefers areas where the undergrowth is partially open with large amounts of dead wood. It forages on or near the ground. In Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, areas where akalats were present had a higher abundance of ground-dwelling arthropods than areas where they were not. The akalat inhabits both primary forest and regenerated areas that have been selectively logged probably more than 20 years ago. Despite its relatively high densities where it occurs, this species (like other threatened birds in the East African coastal forests) is very patchily distributed and dependent on a habitat that is now highly fragmented and under considerable human pressure. The conservation situation in Arabuko-Sokoke gives cause for concern, and the destructive effects of a large elephant population threaten the forests of the Shimba Hills. The conservation status of the lowland Usambara Mountains is probably better and more stable.

&lt;p&gt;Mitigating hazards when lava flows threaten infrastructure is one of the most challenging fields of volcanology, and has an immediate and practical impact on society. Lava flow hazard is determined by the probability of inundation, and essentially controlled by the topography of the area of interest. The most common actions of intervention for lava flow hazard mitigation are therefore the construction of artificial barriers and ditches that can control the flow direction and advancement speed. Estimating the effect a barrier or ditch can have on lava flow paths is non-trivial, but numerical modelling can provide a powerful tool by simulating the eruptive scenario and thus assess the effectiveness of the mitigation action. We present a numerical method for the design of optimal artificial barriers, in terms of location and geometric features, aimed at minimizing the impact of lava flows based on the spatial distribution of exposed elements. First, an exposure analysis collects information about elements at risk from different datasets: population per municipality, distribution of buildings, infrastructure, routes, gas and electricity networks, and land use; numerical simulations are used to compute the probability for these elements to be inundated by lava flows from a number of possible eruptive scenarios&amp;#160; (hazard assessment) and computing the associated economic loss and potential destruction of key facilities (risk assessment). We then generate several intervention scenarios, defined by the location, orientation and geometry (width, length, thickness and even shape) of multiple barriers, and compute the corresponding variation in economic loss. Optimality of the barrier placement is thus considered as a minimization problem for the economic loss, controlled by the barrier placement and constrained by the associated costs. We demonstrate the operation of this system by using a retrospective analysis of some recent effusive eruptions at Mount Etna, Sicily.&lt;/p&gt;
