INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to assess the attitude and the preferences of patients towards the use of a chaper one during breast examination. PATIENTS AND METHODS A two-part questionnaire was circulated among 204 consecutive new patients, attending both symptomatic breast and screened assessment clinics. RESULTS A total of 200 questionnaires were fully completed and returned. Although 104 (52%) patients felt that they did not need a chaperone during breast examination, 65 (33%) preferred to have one. Amongst these 65 patients, the majority (52%) wanted a chaperone in the presence of both a male and female doctor whereas 19 (29%) wanted a chaperone in the presence of a male doctor. When patients were asked which person would be the best chaperone for them, 63 patients (32%) preferred their spouse to act as a chaperone, whereas 57 (29%) preferred a clinic nurse. However, the majority of teenagers and young adults (10–30 years) preferred their parents to act as a chaperone. On asking the reason for preferring a chaperone during breast examination, 69% felt a chaperone helped them to feel more at ease, 28% felt they get more support, 23% get less embarrassed and 10% felt safer. The majority (54%) preferred the nurse to offer a chaperone instead of the doctor (22%). Patients generally said they were comfortable in asking for a chaperone (68%). Overall, 68% of patients considered the offer of a chaperone as a sign of respect and the majority felt the attitude (32%) and gender (20%) of the clinician are the two most important factors influencing the chaperone use. Most patients were of the opinion that the presence of a chaperone does not have a negative effect on the doctor-patient relationship (75%), patient confidentiality (74%) and do not cause embarrassment (68%). Following their assessment in clinic, the patients' views on the use of a chaperone were not significantly changed. CONCLUSIONS There is a wide variety of opinion among patients about the desirability of a chaperone during breast examination. However, the majority consider the offer of a chaperone as a sign of respect and many patients commented that the presence of a chaperone is important for medicolegal protection of both patient and clinician. In recent years, there has been an increasing call from medicolegal societies and medical insurance companies for greater use of chaperones during intimate examinations. We feel that recommendations regarding the use of a chaperone should now be incorporated into the British Association of Surgical Oncology guidelines.

Parent–adolescent communication is assumed to be an important factor affecting adolescent smoking behavior. However, the inner mechanism accounting for this association has still not been clarified in research. Our purpose in this study was to examine the relationships between parent–adolescent communication, adolescent smoking behavior, and depression, as well as gender differences in the relationship between depression and adolescent smoking behavior. Participants were 1,134 students at 6 junior high schools in China who completed the Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale, the Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, and the Smoking Behavior Test. Results showed that parent-adolescent communication had a significant negative effect on adolescent smoking behavior and depression partially mediated the relationship between parent–adolescent communication and adolescent smoking behavior. In addition, gender moderated the relationship between depression and adolescent smoking behavior. Overall, these findings may help to promote better understanding of the relationship between parent–adolescent communication and adolescent smoking behavior.

Although spirituality has been considered a protective factor against shopping addiction, the mechanisms involved in this relationship are still poorly recognized. The present study aims to test the association of daily spiritual experiences, self-efficacy, and gender with shopping addiction. The sample consisted of 430 young adults (275 women and 155 men), with a mean age of 20.44 (SD = 1.70). The Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Bergen Shopping Addiction Scale were used to measure the study variables. The results showed that: (1) Daily spiritual experiences had a direct negative effect on shopping addiction; (2) daily spiritual experiences were positively related to self-efficacy, thought the effect was moderated by gender; (3) self-efficacy negatively correlated with a shopping addiction; and (4) the indirect effect of daily spiritual experiences on shopping addiction through self-efficacy was significant for women but insignificant for men. The findings confirm that spirituality protects young adults against developing a shopping addiction. They also suggest that when introducing spiritual issues into shopping addiction prevention or treatment programs, the gender-specific effects of spirituality on shopping addiction via self-efficacy should be considered to adequately utilize young women’s and men’s spiritual resources.

Dividend policy remains an important topic in modern corporate finance. Researchers, managers, and business owners seek to understand the optimal dividend policy. This study examined dividend policy as a driver of corporate growth in sub-Saharan Africa: evidence in Nigeria. The ex-post facto research design was adopted to analyse how dividend policy spur the growth of active insurance companies in the Nigerian Stock Exchange using secondary data of the sampled firms for 2007 – 2018 while utilising descriptive and inferential (regression) statistics in data analysis. The findings reveal that dividend policy in terms of dividend payout has an insignificant negative effect on corporate growth of insurance companies in Nigeria (?= -8.09E-05, p=0.77; Adjusted R2=0.4093; F(4,139)=3.29; p=0.00 with the controlling effect of efficiency, firm age and leverage which have a significant effect on corporate growth of insurance companies in Nigeria. Specifically, the study reveals that efficiency has a significant negative effect on corporate growth (?=-5.29, p<0.05); while firm age discloses a significant positive influence on corporate growth (?=0.417, p<0.05); as leverage exerts a significant negative effect on corporate growth (?=0.052, p<0.05). Therefore, the study concludes that dividend policy does not significantly drive insurance companies' dividend payout growth. The study recommends that insurance companies' management retain more of their profits, improve their efficiency, and control their leverage to further growth.

PurposeConsumers' attitude toward luxury brands remains a crucial area for many researchers and marketers. But, attitude toward domestically-produced luxury fashion brands in developing countries have not been sufficiently examined. Drawing on the social identity theory (SIT), this study proposes that consumer ethnocentrism (CE) and cultural sensitivity (CS) will significantly influence attitudes toward luxury fashion brands produced in Trinidad and Tobago. Furthermore, the study suggests that consumer demographical characteristics of age, gender and income will moderate the influence.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 160 fashion consumers and analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis.FindingsThe findings confirm the positive impact of CE on consumers' attitude toward domestically produced luxury products, while CS has a significant but negative effect. Also, the results show that these effects are consistent across different levels of income, but vary by age and gender.Practical implicationsThese findings provide a deeper understanding of consumers' perceptions and inherent biases toward luxury brands. It further explains how brands with ostentatious value, in particular fashion brands, produced in Trinidad and Tobago, can compete against larger international brands.Originality/valueThe study is one of the few that examines the effects of personal values on attitudes toward luxurious fashion brands produced in a developing country. It uniquely extends the SIT model by examining the influence of CE, CS and demographical characteristics on preferential attitudes toward locally produced luxury fashion brands.

The purpose of this research are to analyst the negative effect of institutional ownership, audit committee and gender to audit report lag of mining company in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore for 2012-2016. Gender is proxied by gender of CEO and gender of Committee Audit’s Head. Not only that, the research also analyst the difference mean value of audit report lag in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. This research use random purposive sampling technique because the amount company gap after purposive sampling between three counties are high. Total of population of three countries are 67 companies and mining company which fulfill the criteria of purposive sampling is 43 companies. That are consist of 34 Indonesia’s mining companies, 3 Malaysia’s mining companies and 6 Singapore’s mining companies. The final sample is 13 companies consist of 5 Indonesia’s company, 5 Singapore’s company and 3 Malaysia’s Company. Multiple Linear Regression is used to examine the effect of independent variable to dependent variable, while One Way-Anova is used to examine the difference mean value of audit report lag. The result of this research are institutional ownership have negative effect to audit report lag, while audit committee and gender don’t have effect to audit report lag. Beside that, there is no difference mean value of audit report lag in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore because they have same regulation about maximal day of company to publish their financial report.

The study was conducted to investigate the relationship between diversification on Board and firm performance. The investigation has been performed using panel data procedure for a sample of 204 Vietnamese listed companies in two different groups: Large cap and Mid cap, listed in HOSE and HNX during the period of five years from 2015 to 2019. The study uses three performance measures (including return on equity, return on asset, Tobin’s Q) as dependent variable. The independent variables for measurement of diversification on Board are the number of females and the diversification for Supervisory Board are the number of females only. Other independent variables are average age of Board member, CEO duality and the number of independent directors. The results indicated that firm performance have positive relationship with nationality diversity on Board and gender diversity on Supervisory Board. CEO duality shows a significant result of negative effect on firm performance.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of firm age, leverage, profitability, liquidity, and gender on corporate social disclosure. Corporate social disclosure is measured using content analysis methods based on GRI Standards 2016. This research is based on a quantitative method using multiple linier regression analysis. The population of this study is manufacturing companies listed on London Stock Exchange in 2015-2017. The data analysis tool used is the IBM SPSS 21 program. The conclusion of this study is that leverage variable has a significant negative effect on corporate social disclosure, while firm age, profitability, liquidity, and gender variables have no significant effect on corporate social disclosure. The results showed that leverage has a negative and significant effect on corporate social disclosure. Firm age, profitability, liquidity, and gender have not a significant effect on corporate social disclosure.

The study aimed to investigate the factors that affect the solvency of the insurance companies in Palestine and to highlight the nature and strength of the relationship between liquidity, investment, leverage, claims and the solvency of the insurance companies in Palestine.To achieve the objectives of the study, the descriptive and quantitative analysis methods were used in the study. Based on the data of the financial statements of seven insurance companies (out of 9 companies) and by using regression of fixed effects of panel data for 2010-2017, the study found that the claims have a positive effect on the financial solvency and leverage has a negative effect on the solvency of insurance companies in Palestine, while investment and liquidity have an insignificant effect on financial solvency.

The study assessed how organizational culture affects employee work engagement in the insurance industries in Ghana. A cross sectional survey design was used to purposively sample one hundred and sixty-one (161) employees from two leading insurance companies ambidextrously. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Independent t-test were the statistical tools used to test the three hypotheses of the study. The results of the study revealed that, there is a positive significant relationship between organizational culture and employee work engagement. Again it was established that managers are more likely to be engaged on their job than non-managers and gender has no significant influence on engagement levels. The study therefore concluded that, to increase employee work engagement, organizations must adopt a favorable culture. Therefore we recommend that organizations should maintain and sustain favorable culture in order to increase the level of employees work engagement.

Research examining attitudes toward the death penalty has led to a variety of theoretical and practical implications that continue to inform both research and policy. While many studies have examined how race, class, and gender are related to attitudes toward the death penalty, there is a complete lack of literature regarding sexual orientation and attitudes toward the death penalty. This is quite surprising since demographic research suggests that gay and lesbian individuals (compared to heterosexual individuals) have significantly higher levels of education and may be much more likely to align with liberal politics (two things that have been found to be correlated with a lack of support for the death penalty). Furthermore, studies suggest that gender differences in attitudes toward capital punishment can be related to the fact that women are socialized to be more empathic than men; however, it is unclear how these gender differences in empathic concern may be related to death penalty attitudes among gay and lesbian individuals. In this exploratory analysis using the General Social Survey (years 2002 and 2004), the authors investigate gay and lesbian individuals’ attitudes toward the use of the death penalty. Preliminary findings indicate that similar to heterosexuals, the majority of gay and lesbian individuals support the death penalty; however, being a gay man exerts a significant negative effect on death penalty support. Furthermore, both empathic concern and political beliefs entirely mediate the effects of gender and sexual orientation on attitudes toward the death penalty.
